Dude was the best. I didn;t have a favorite college fb team until I decided I was going to Purdue for engr.

However, as a non-cable kid, I watched the games on ABC every week, and a big draw was Mr. Jackson.

What a voice, set the table just right, and didn't overhype.
Most importantly like another long time fave that recently passed, Pat Summerall, he knew when to keep quiet and just let the moment play out. That's something missing in most broadcast teams nowadays, there's just as much of an art for when not to talk and just let the natural atmosphere marinate so the viewer can witness that.

Funny, I never thought about that until reading your post. We were a non-cable household for many years as well and Keith Jackson was the voice we listened to every Saturday. My brother and I would make a box of Mac N Cheese and make sure it was ready for kickoff every Saturday morning for years.

RIP Mr Jackson - the fatherly voice during my time discovering college football and sports as a whole.

A vast majority of announcers make a game worse, some of the better ones don't damage it.  Jackson made the game better.  Having access to many announcers/channels growing up only amplified how great he was - I got to compare him to everyone else.

And when it came to college football announcing, there was Keith Jackson...and then there was everybody else.

Sad to learn this.  Loved his voice, manner, insights and really everything about his broadcasts.

This.
As a child of the 90s, with cable, we had choices.  Not like today, but there were always 3-4 games on at a time.  If his game was the one ABC regional picked up, that was what I watched, even if the game I cared about was on a different channel.  I can't think of another case where the voice, not the game, determined what I watched.  On Sundays I generally watch the CBS NFL game over the FOX game, because I like their NFL production better, but that's about it.  There are certainly announcers where I'll turn the game off, rather than listen to them.

I've heard he's the one that got people to start calling the Rose Bowl the Granddaddy of the All, and Michigan Stadium  the Big House.  Anybody confirm?

I remember watching this game live. Of course it's one of the most memorable hail mary's ever so we've all seen the play 50+ times, but just listen to the extended piece on this. 100% pure Keith Jackson goodness.

What he says in the 3 minutes mark about remembering the play has proven to be extremely accurate.

Oh, and don't miss Bob Griese's prescient insight on the play at the beginning.

There’s a room named after legendary play-by-play announcer Keith Jackson in the Memorial Stadium press box.

Jackson, whose signature phrases like “Whoa, Nelly!” made him the down-home voice of college football during more than five decades as a sportscaster, died Friday. He was 89.

Jackson was the lead commentator for many moments in Husker history. He called Nebraska’s victory over Oklahoma in 1978 — when the Huskers forced six fumbles to snap a seven-game losing streak to the Sooners — the 1974 Sugar Bowl and the 1997 win at No. 2 Washington, among countless other classics.

He became such a regular presence in Lincoln that when Memorial Stadium underwent a renovation in the late '90s, there was a particular part of the press box dedicated to him — the bathroom in the TV broadcast booth.

Don Bryant, the longtime NU sports information director, said Jackson told him at the time he was pleasantly surprised that he would have access to a bathroom in the booth rather than have to use the facilities open to the rest of the working news media. Seeing an opportunity to have some fun with his longtime friend, Bryant had an engraved sign hung next to the door of the TV booth bathroom: “Keith Jackson Toilet Facility.”

Jackson seemed to always hold Nebraska fans in high regard. In a 2010 interview with The World-Herald, Jackson said his favorite memory from calling Nebraska games was seeing how gracious Husker fans were in defeat, like in a 1985 loss to Florida State or to Washington in 1991.

“Maybe it’s because I’m an old country boy,” Jackson said, “but I respect that from a crowd, who will say to the winner, ‘Well done.’ ”

Jackson also recorded a video tribute to Nebraska fans that was played during the celebration of Memorial Stadium’s 300th consecutive sellout in 2009.

“300 consecutive sellouts? Are you kidding? Wow!” Jackson said in the video. “And some of the guys from that first Bob Devaney team are here today to join the party as well. These are the guys that sowed the seeds. They’re the ones that set the discipline standard. They’re the ones that opened the door to this historic day. 300 consecutive sellouts. The whole nation of college football stands in admiration.”

I heard someone say they associate his voice with autumn dusks, and that seems about perfect to me.  He was always calling those big 3:30 games that started under afternoon sun, and faded into dusk.  To me, that will always trump night games for big game feel.

Another phrase of his I haven't seen brought up was the "big uglies"

Was that ever uttered by Jackson this century?  I never recall hearing it and I've listened to Keith since early 80s.
