Title: Lions and Tigers and Bearcats, Oh My (SOC 9/18/21)
Post by: MaximumSam on September 18, 2021, 06:02:59 AM
Gonna be a warm one in Columbus today. One last gasp of summer before the weather turns. A high of 88, but later in the week the highs go to 65, and fall will be on. But still, 88 today - not exactly chili weather. I will hit up the store this morning - the wife is meeting her old roommate for dinner, and the oldest is going to homecoming. That leaves me and the two youngest. The youngest only ever wants to eat chicken nuggets, and the other one only wants hot dogs or cheese pizza. Probably going to make something hot and spicy and full of vegetables. Those tears you hear will be from my house.

Schedule

Noon
1 pm, Minnesota at Colorado, Pac12
2:30 pm, Purdue at #12 Notre Dame, NBC
3:30
4 pm, Northwestern at Duke, ACCN
7:30 pm, #22 Auburn at #10 PSU, ABC

Others
3:30, #1 Alabama at #11 Florida
10:15, ESPN, #19 Arizona State at #23 BYU

Checking in from Colorado. About to head down into Boulder to start pregame.

Gonna be sunny, hot (high 91), and dry (dew point of 33). No one here that I've talked to has a clue how this game is going to go.

CU stinks.  A&M had a backup QB pooping the bed and the Buffs' offense didn't produce squat.

I'll be watching the Florida game down in Casa Grande with my friends and their 6 kids.  Both parents are from Rockford IL, neither especially likes football, but their 2nd-youngest (4 yrs) loves football and  the Gators!  So I have to keep that going.
I randomly order Florida stuff on Amazon and have it sent to their house.
I might lose 2 friends in the near future.  :57:

Perhaps both sides were bringing their A game and left it all on the field - some time your opponent can actually make things - you know - kind of difficult

No one here in Boulder knows how to tailgate for a morning game. We beat the cashiers to the lot, and no one knows if they'll be around to scan our passes.

I recommend this: https://www.chelseasmessyapron.com/garlic-beef-and-veggie-ramen/

It's not actually all that spicy, depending how much red pepper flake you use. But it's delicious and will expand the kids' horizons...

BTW while it's called "ramen", it's a noodle dish, not a noodle soup.

I'm just waiting for soup weather to really start, so I can fill the house with the delicious smell of simmering pho broth for 12 hours on a Saturday...

Which game? ASU/BYU is on ESPN if that's the game you're referring to.

No games I'm going to this weekend (check with me next week though). Auburn's alumni chapter invited me out to watch their game Vs Penn St at one of the local Yacht bars. Will combine that with a trip to Petco to restock on cat food. Planning to finish the evening down the street from my apartment building with the Arizona State alumni chapter for their late kickoff Vs BYU.

As for me, we're headed to a brewery (https://www.greencheekbeer.com/costa-mesa) for lunch with the in-laws today. Nice because it'll be mid-high 70s and it'll be a Jeep ride. Not nice because the Purdue game starts at 11:30 AM PT, so I'll be watching it time-shifted. I'll be radio silent from 11:30 until after I've seen the whole thing, so won't be participating in the thread.

Tonight we're gonna be chill and just make a nice caprese salad with some crusty bread for dinner. Grabbing Sprinkles cupcakes on the way back from the brewery so we'll have some dessert.

You really think that's Gattis? Newsflash: it's not. It's Harbaugh. The guy is a retard who would rather run reverses with his fast WR's than actually throw them the ball.

Offense is so predictable it's not even funny. They'll beat up on teams that can't stop the run efficiently but when they get forced to pass- that offense will fall completely apart.

only thing this team is missing is a passing QB with a modern passing scheme and a couple of CB's. If JJ McCarthy was just one year older and if Will Johnson & Domani Jackson were 2021 recruits :/

Everything else I see from this team, I like. Even the WR's.

Blake Corum is so fast. Jesus. But not only is he fast, he's stupid quick. His quickness and patience is very Mike Hart-ish. Michigan hasn't had a back this good in a loooooooong time. He really is like Mike Hart but with elite speed. Haskins compliments him so well. Haskins batters the defense with his power & brute force and Corum shocks them with his electric quickness & speed.

Rocky Lombardi was screaming to his team "they can't stop us!" after he drove them down the field and they got that FG early in the 1st QTR. LOL. How's that working out Rocky?

Miami is a joke lol. They play in a half empty NFL stadium, they are located smack dab in arguably the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country, they have tons of athletes and speed on defense- but they just play stupid football.

Feels like MSU has completely dominated this game, and they are plus 4 in turnovers. I know they missed a short field goal, and Miami hit a bomb field goal, so that's a 6-point swing right there. But it actually feels like Michigan State should be up by a lot more than 14

They clearly made up their mind they’re not giving up running errands because on that first drive from Tulsa they gave up one running yard.
Also finding spots in Ohio states newly played zone but let’s see how long that lasts.

playing on the road in a Big Ten Stadium is a tough trip for a non power 5 team. Especially where the home team seems to play tougher at home.

Michigan had a final touchdown that would have given them 70 points called back due to having two players on the field wearing #1.  If it was like #15 I bet the refs never would have noticed.  Never saw that penalty before at any level.

Bad officiating lead to 10 points for ND, but it looks as though it wouldn't have mattered anyway (unless it changed momentum).

Purdue defense played well.  Except they gave up 2 critical 4th down conversions and another one on 3rd.  Those were the game changers.

Purdue offense needs some work against better defenses, the OL in particular. Surprisingly the run game was good.  The pass blocking was bad.  The play calls on 3rd down were bad.  Brohm tried to get too fancy.  The Boilers established a decent run game, but did not get their normal pass game going and instead elected to get tricky.  Should have stuck with the the normal pass plan.

Credit to the ND defense, they played an excellent game.

Well it was my first full chance to watch Ohio State end to end today. Very interesting.

Well no team as a finished product I can easily say this is not a playoff caliber team or even close to it at this juncture.  A lot of young guys flying around making good plays one minute and huge mistakes the next.

The Fanbase was raging about not being able to run the ball and not being able to stop the run. The buckeyes reversed both of those trends today allowing only 59 total rushing yards or 2 yards a carry well running for 8 yards a carry in well over 300 yards.

But they played a two safety soft zone for about 80% of the game and gave up lots of underneath throws as the Tulsa quarterback picked the underneath zones apart.

It shows you how important Rushing is in the college game. The Tulsa QB stats were almost identical to Strouds stats last week versus Oregon. Both in a losing effort as the team that could run the ball won the game.

Now that I've sufficiently recovered from being fried on the metal benches of Folsom Field, a few thoughts:

-Much remains to be seen about the quality, or lack thereof, of this Colorado team. But to go into their building and completely shut them out is something impressive.

-Holy cow, it was hot! It was okay early, but by the 4th quarter we were all severely sunburned and dehydrated. Altitude is a thing.

-Washington is still the #1 setting in college football, but Colorado and Utah are close behind. Just gorgeous.

More thoughts to come Monday.

We outgained them by 100+ yards.  We didn't get the win, but I feel like we gave Ivan Drago a cut over his eye....he's not a machine, he's a man!  I'm hoping this game gets the fan base off Emory Jones' back.
The difference in our OL from last year to now is astounding!  We couldn't run block vs a Directional School last year.  6 ypc vs Bama is man's work.

Nix does suck.
He's a guy who marched the offense down the field in high school, but you're not exactly sure how he does it.  It just works.
But against good teams, he isn't good enough to do that.  Not a good enough athlete to run.  Not a very good passer.  It's hard to metriculate like that.

Seems if the recruiting services remember your Dad’s football days you get an extra star. Same reason Huard got 5 stars committing to Washington, now waiting on the bench, picking gum behind a guy who just lost to Montana.

I think a better question is why these programs stick with QBs who show zero improvement year-in/year-out. Nix, Taylor Martinez, Daniel Jones, Kirk Cousins - zero improvement.

I am watching the late PAC 12 games and despite ASU and UCLA’s coaching staffs shifting like musical chairs, you can see linear improvement from their starting QBs - Thompson & Daniels.

UCLA up 7-6 on Fresno.
BYU up 14-7 on Arizona State.

The targetting rules need some serious adjustments.  We need something but not this.  I think it needs to be flagrant and not incidental.

That Miss State "punt" return call was horrendous, the ref threw his bag and waved to stop the clock, play was dead.

There’s sort of a irony of the pendulum swinging back.

We used to have a more limited set of later games and a ton of 11 ams, as ESPN/ABC concentrated viewership later in the day.

BTN started the proliferation of networks, which meant more evening slots, which shifted everything later.

Now multiple networks, including FOX, are zagging by trying to create a more balanced slate, and leveraging its best asset to do so.

I’m trying to think back on the best Wisconsin night games of late. Iowa and Michigan in 2018. In terms of home games, probably 2016 (I’m not counting last year)

I love the pendulum swinging back for FOX.  If they keep it like that, and ABC/ESPN sticks to the primetime, we can always get the best Big Ten game at noon, the best SEC game at 3:30, and the best Pac 12, ACC, or Big XII game at night, that's great with me.  Usually ESPN plants the 2nd best SEC game there, and/or the 2nd best Big Ten game, so the balance is just perfect.

You are assuming they actually go to bed. Not a good assumption.

ABC's national timeslot is also 11 AM.

If you don't like it, you can join the SEC where CBS slots in their national game at 2:30.

(of course the CBS contract goes away in the next couple of years as well)

ABC has the 8 pm EST timeslot?

I don't have the data, but I'd be interested to see the blend of BTN games as well as Fox evening ones. We kind of had that buildup of night games, but it still seemed like ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 often had the best of the haul (I suppose ESPN had UGA-SC last week, so maybe not always)

ABC sometimes carries a primetime game but not every week.  Lots of the time those night games are on ESPN/2.

And lots of people seem to use ABC and ESPN interchangeably but they're really not the same at all.  The OTA broadcast network ratings still dominate over the ratings you see from the cable networks.  A primetime game on ESPN is still not really a "national" game, not in the sense that it would be if it were on standard broadcast OTA ABC.

ABC has had a prime time game every week since at least 2018, and probably further back. I’ll investigate more when I’m not at work. (I use them the same because they’re the same company and draw from the same pool of games. ABC just gets some of the more choice options from ESPN)

And this is where the “national” thing gets sort of silly. They’re almost all basically national games. I’ve been out of school 10 years, and the closest I lived to Madison was 6.5 hours away for three years. I’ve never been in a really tight spot not being able to watch a badger game. One of the few good things ESPN ever did was make national access to the sport relatively easy.

I'm not sure I believe this is true-- speaking specifically of ABC OTA broadcast network television-- but if you have the proof, that's fine.  It doesn't really change the discussion.

But you CAN'T use ABC and ESPN interchangeably, because ABC OTA broadcast is available in more homes than ESPN, and therefore draws higher numbers.  The whole point we're talking about here, is maximizing eyeballs.  ABC believes they can do this best in the 11 AM timeslot, compared to 2:30 PM (or some other kickoff time later in the day but not primetime).  That's the ONLY point we're addressing here-- the complaints from fans, about that early kickoff, and ABC's belief that it maximizes eyeballs on their selected matchup.  That's the sole point of having this discussion.

Anyway, even if they do broadcast a both a primetime game and an 11 AM game every single week, that still means they only have-- at a maximum-- two national timeslots per Saturday.  And they have multiple conferences, with multiple teams playing in those multiple conferences, to fill those two slots.  That's dozens of games, to fill only two slots.

ABC wants their biggest games in those timeslots.  And now, we can add back into the discussion, the fact that Fox also wants the same thing.  So fans of teams that are popular and/or winning a lot, have a larger percentage of their games slotted in at 11 AM Central.  Which is what fans are complaining about, which is the only reason we're even having this ongoing discussion.

I'll also add that ABC and Fox don't care about you or me-- the diehard fans.  They know we'll watch our teams no matter what time, or what station, they're televised on.  They're shooting for casual fans, and they know they can get more of them at 11 AM, than at 2:30, on your average Saturday.

So, this got me curious. The last split evening ABC game was Week 10, 2014 (calling 730 or 8 games evening). Week 7 of that year is the first I found without an evening ABC game. ABC split the 3:30 time slot, had Red River at noon, and the CBS game was king. (Week 2 that year also didn't have an ABC game, and the previous year also had gaps in Weeks 2 and 7)

Anyway, my friend, I'm confused by what you're saying. You wrote "ABC believes they can do this best in the 11 AM timeslot, compared to 2:30 PM (or some other kickoff time later in the day but not primetime).  That's the ONLY point we're addressing here." I'm unclear if this is a hypothetical. ABC's noon game is Texas Tech-Texas. The primetime game isn't super, but it's No. 4 Oklahoma vs WVU. 3:30 is Rutgers-Michigan. The other options, which are on ESPN/ESPN2 are Florida-UT and SC-Kentucky, so an uninspiring batch, with the best in prime time. .

The primetime ABC game is not only a national timeslot, but it's basically one of the best ones (that and CBS at 3:30 because of the product). You wrote they only have two national timeslots a week, but they run three games (unless you're saying the CBS game blots that out). Which leaves me confused. Everyone as up four timeslots, though many opt for three (if they don't have or want late night fare) or fewer (for inventory and other reasons). Similarly, the idea that you can get more casuals at 11 am compared to 2:30 on a Saturday most of the time isn't true.

What's happening with this game and Fox is a zag of sorts. For a stretch, you didn't have much
prime time competition. Fox wasn't in the game. CBS didn't have a night game. There were not conference networks for the most part. ESPN/ABC could do what it wanted. But with conference network proliferation, you added four more primetime slots, which both thinned the morning options and made the night crowded field. So Fox is trying to put its best where there's the least competition to see if they can hog more of that pie. For the moment, it's worked. The three games have all ranked top 3 on their Saturdays, with one ranking No. 1 (though to be fair, that's been the game of the year thus far, and in the exact way that drives ratings).

OK so I've looked into it further, and it looks like ABC no longer divides any of its games regionally.  Not sure when they stopped doing that, maybe in the last 5-7 years I guess?  If you recall, they used to have the "regional coverage map" that showed you where your non-national (2:30 PM) game would be broadcast.  The nation would be split between, say, Florida State-Miami on the East Coast,  Oklahoma-West Virginia Central, and UCLA-Oregon on the West Coast.

And the times/networks were listed that way.  11:00 AM would say ABC: Texas- Texas Tech.  And then 2:30 would show "ABC: FSU-Miami/OU-WVU/UCLA-UO"

So 11 AM was the national game, and 2:30 was regional.  (As an aside, this was actually a reversal from what they'd done in the 90s, which had the national game at 2:30, and the regionally splt games at 11 AM.  Somewhere round 2003, they flipped those, after their market analysis told them they had a better chance at capturing the national audience at 11 AM rather than 2:30)

Now there's only one game listed on each network at any given time.  ABC has one at 11, one at 2:30, and so on  Same goes for ESPN and ESPN2.

I believe they still have the capability to "reverse mirror" those games, in other word they could bump up the LSU-Miss State game at 11 AM from ESPN, to ABC, for a certain region that presumably would include the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, and that would knock the Texas-Texas Tech game down to ESPN, rather than ABC, in that same region.  But, since streaming exists, I don't know how often they actually do this.

Regardless, I will abandon my antiquated use of the words "national" and "regional" as the terms no longer really seem to apply.

And yet that still doesn't change my fundamental argument about the 11 AM kickoff times for ABC and Fox, with respect to fan anger.  Whether it's due to increased exposure in primetime, or additional pressure from CBS/SEC in the 2:30 slot, or other factors-- when ABC or Fox get to pick in the pecking order, they typically choose to put the more desirable matchups at 11 AM, rather than 2:30.  Only one game per week from ALL possibilities, is going to end up on ABC primetime.  So the next-most-desirable matchup, is going to be aired at 11 AM.

And that's what fans are complaining about.  They don't like the early kicks.  But the 11 AM is a preferred timeslot in the view of Fox and ABC, compared to 2:30.  So it's going to keep happening to fans of teams that are popular and/or successful.  And beyond that, it's nothing new.  This has been going on for almost 20 years.  Before CBS carried SEC games, before Fox carried college games, before ABC established primetime games, before the conference networks existed-- ABC was STILL putting preferred matchups at 11 AM, rather than 2:30.

Which is my only point.  I just can't help but be amused by all the fans bitching about 11 AM kickoffs, when that has been the norm for two decades.

And beyond that, there are plenty of other undesirable things the networks do.  Thursday night games.  Early September 3 PM 105-degree kickoffs in Austin, Texas. Etc.

But the bottom line is that all of our schools have sold out the in-person fan experience, for the sake of the television broadcasting partners' preferences.  We have nobody to blame, but our own schools, for agreeing to all of this.

Ha!

Well I suppose that's the truth.

They need to be bitching at their school's athletic department.  They're the ones who handed those rights over to the conferences.

I think we're in agreement in the central point. The schools sold out to TV. TV fills it out as it sees fit.

I still don't buy that there's something more valuable about 11 am than 2:30, and expect the opposite is in most cases true. This might be informed by the fact that UW played a lot of not that attractive games early when I was in school.

That might just be my bias that comes with a timeframe of the past 15 years, especially the past seven or so, when primetime became kind and then oversaturated.

This is what I think is weird, that you're arguing over this point?  Outside of primetime, ABC and Fox take their next pick and put it at 11, not 2:30.  The proof is in the pudding, so to speak.

You can doubt that this is the correct course of action, but it's certainly the course of action that the network executives choose to take, for whatever reasons.

(And those reasons, are their market research...)

I also find the if not Prime Time, then Noon/11 am to be a bit of a dodge from CBS' 330/230 slot, which let's face it, wipes the floor ratings wise most weeks with whatever else Fox/ABC puts up at either Noon/11 or 330/230.

I'll also note on the production side,  Fox has a garbage production, with CBS' being the best (i'm not talking about the PBP/Color).

the shots Fox missed last week and in the Ducks/tOSU were inexcusable.   There were a few plays where I thought i was watching old wishbone games, with the camera guy buying the fakes.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT

But seriously, I don't think the bolded part is the case (on the ABC side), and think it's a relatively recent development on the Fox side. And the strategy behind it for Fox seems sound, i.e. to dodge the CBS game and the oversaturated evenings.

Just this year, ABC put a top 10 matchup (Iowa-Iowa State) in the afternoon slot with Florida USF in the early slot. Bama-Miami got the Week 1 3:30 with OU-Tulane at noon. Last week, the probably better MSU-Miami game was at noon, with the national power (Clemson) in a conference game against GT, so I guess that's a next pick situation (the only other well-rated game they had access to was SC-UGA, so a lean week). I guess when I see those games, I see very little pudding.

I guess we can just disagree on that.

I've had it.  It's okay.  Not really worth the extra calories IMO.

Mayonnaise in tuna salad, of course, is completely necessary.

I've never been much of a mayonnaise on a sandwich kinda guy.  I don't dislike mayonnaise like some people do, in fact I like to mix it with ketchup and eat it on fries.  But for sandwiches I typically use mustard.

In my neck of the woods this is the default, and they call it Fry Sauce.

If you want regular ketchup you have to request it, and then they look at you like you just ordered ketchup on a hot dog in Chicago.

I'd heard that.  Any idea how it originated?  It seems oddly, specifically Utahan, at least here in the USA.

I know you can also buy premixed versions in some South American countries, in Argentina they call it salsa golf.

I picked up the habit in France on one of my first trips over there.  I saw the locals dipping their frites in mayo, but a handful mixed mayo and ketchup together.  I tried that and was hooked.

If you lived in Hawaii you could watch Gameday at 3, and games would start at 6.
I've done it. Of course I was jet lagged on vacation, and just happened to wake up at 3:30. But it was a lot better than having the typical infomercial parade you'd have at that hour.

I spent a lot of time working in Newport Beach during my first job out of college, like, about a year.

I really liked college football starting at 9 AM on Saturdays, pro games at 10 AM on Sundays, and MNF at 5 PM.  Of course, I wasn't going to any of those games in-person...

Arctic Circle claims to be the ones that got the ball rolling on that.

It has definitely permeated the neighboring states. I've been served Fry Sauce in Idaho, Nevada and Arizona as well.

Some of those fancy burger joints will substitute the Ketchup with BBQ Sauce, and the Mayo with Ranch. Red Robin does this, for example.

It took some getting used to, as I'm one of those guys who orders everything without mayo. But once you get used to it, regular ketchup is just way too overwhelming a flavor.

Yeah I really only ever eat ketchup on French fries or tater tots or onion rings, and agree that the mayo cuts the intensity of the ketchup, in a good way.

I like the contrast of the sweet ketchup with the savory salty fried goodness of the fries.  But I probably only ever eat french fries maybe once every 6 weeks these days.

Of course in 2 weeks when I'm at the State Fair, I will almost certainly OD on fried food.

I don't see the point of mayo. It's not unpleasant to consume, but it certainly isn't "good."

Seems like a really easy way to cut a bunch of calories, without really missing much.

Mustard only on hotdogs (with diced onion).

Speaking of Elmos.   They were quite fastidious in their desire to keep from bottling their sauce for retail consumption, as the potency of horseradish in cocktail sauce begins to degrade fairly quickly after it is made.  I typically walk in there and buy a fresh pint or quart for parties.

Apparently since bottling it at Costco and now elsewhere,  it's seen significant market share.   They also have bourbon and colas now.  Pretty great brand to market of course.  I still prefer to buy it fresh for immediate consumption.   Even a good jar of horseradish sauce doesn't maintain that kick after a week or two.

Btw: yellow mustard still the best adhesive for any meat rub for smoking.

I'm talking about the generic stuff that comes out of the bright yellow plastic bottles, and often sit along side a matching red bottle of ketchup.
