Title: Week 3
Post by: medinabuckeye1 on September 13, 2021, 04:12:34 PM
The games involving B1G teams, ranked by roughly what I *THINK* the competitiveness should be:

Wisconsin is taking the week off, apparently to prepare for the trip to Chicago to play Notre Dame.

Purdue @ Notre Dame, 2:30 PM on NBC:  I'd love to see Purdue win but I just don't think they have enough.  Maybe . . .
Vegas opens with ND favored by 7.

I'm guessing that prior to the season, if anyone was asked what the line would be, they'd probably have said double digits.

Purdue is 2-0 but hasn't played anyone--possible that both Toledo and Jacksonville St are better than OrSU and UConn, respectively.

ND is 2-0 but looked decidedly mortal. So much so that a win over Toledo dropped them 4 spots in the AP poll and 3 in the coaches poll.

I'm not confident about this game... But I'm not terrified by it either.

a) feel bad for Tulsa, OSU is going to take it out on them.

b) calling for Purdue in the upset. ND looks very mortal.

c) Miami - MSU most toss-up game so far this season. Have no idea what to make of either team. Could see either team winning.

d) Auburn - PSU going to be an awesome game I think.

e) Nebraska is going to get beaten like a red headed step child.

I think Penn State will hold Auburn to 13 points  and score 27.

Miami is about a TD favorite.

Familiarizing myself with the Oklahoma-Nebraska game a little...

Knowing PJ's teams, the Gopher game in Boulder will end something like 42-41 in double-OT with a missed PAT to tie.

N V OU happened in that Orange Bowl due to a combination of events in 1978 season.   Nebraska upsets #1OU in Lincoln, but then the next week vs Mizzou, #2 Nebraska is upset 35-31.  Missouri would not defeat Nebraska again until the 2003 season.  Independent undefeated Penn St. Goes to Sugar to play undefeated Bama.  Notre Dame goes to Cotton.  Orange Bowl selects OU as the best match-up.   #4 v #6.  Heisman winner Billy Sims does Billy Sims things in rematch.  31-24.

I believe that is the last non championship rematch of a regular season conference game to occur in a bowl game.   I think Nevada played CSU in a Arizona bowl but it wasn't a rematch.

Quite a few good games on tap, but correction, I  checked UNI's schedule. They are not playing Michigan. These games look like games I will want to check in on. I probably won't want to check too long on Neb.-Okla.

Auburn-Penn St.
Cincy-Indiana
Purdue-ND
Neb-Okla
Minn.-Colo.

He should have typed "NIU" and not "UNI."

Michigan is playing Northern Illinois University.

Really looking forward to that Nebraska-OU game.

What time is kickoff again?

Penn State hosting Auburn with I assume a white out should be good.  Not buying Penn State favored by 6, I think it will be a close game. Penn State has had a tougher game this season than Auburn.  Don't really know much about Auburn, this is their first real test.

I don't think Auburn is "very good", the are good enough to pound weaklings, but good teams will push them around and their QB is mistake prone.  PSU appears to me to be at least "pretty good" and possibly very good.

Also keep in mind that NIU just upset GT in week 1.  Watch out for those Huskies.

I was confused. I thought UNI playing ISU and Michigan in the same year is pretty gutsy. But, Michigan now knows better than to risk another loss to FCS in 2021. Iowa keeps tempting fate, but had its loss to FCS NDSU a few years ago.

UNI and NIU played each other only once, in 1964, with NIU winning at home 14-9.

I took the multi-state professional ethics exam in 1983 at NIU. I think I drank whiskey at UNI. I cannot say for sure. It was decades ago.

Here is an interesting stat.

Kent State leads the country with 8 interceptions in 2 games.

Iowa is currently 2nd in the country with 6 interceptions in 2 games.

I think the odds of there being a few picks in the Iowa-Kent game are pretty good.

hope to see more of JJ McCarthy this week. The sooner he can get acclimated to the college game and take over the reigns at QB- the sooner Michigan might be able to make a jump as a program. Not knocking McNamara- just think the teams ceiling is much lower with him.

Usually when Pitt is on the ESPN+, the local ABC affiliate picks it up, and sticks the national ABC game on CW, or something. This week? Nope? Pitt-WMU is available on Bally Sports Detroit in Michigan, but you have to stream it, literally within the city of Pittsburgh, as ABC is showing MSU-Miami. Big yikes Pitt.

That is one of the reasons Pitt is not in the B1G.

Pittsburgh is Steelers city. They don't give two shits about Pitt football. Honestly, don't know if any cfb could work at a high level there. Kind of hard to compete with a cornerstone blue-chip NFL franchise that until Brady-Belichik transformed the Patriots- was probably THE pre-eminent franchise in NFL history.

They were very good, when Western PA was THE football hotbed in the 70s.  While it's still a solid talent pool, you certainly can't field a high end team based solely on Western PA kids.  Particularly when you have OSU and PSU a couple hours either direction.

You occasionally hear the "Pitt needs an on campus stadium" folks.  That's wrong.  Would that get a couple hundred (thousand?) more students to go?  Probably.  But that's not the big issue.  Oakland (the neighborhood where Pitt is) is a nightmare to access.  For the population at large, Heinz Field is far more accessible than an on campus stadium.  They need a smaller stadium for sure.  The only ACC schools with larger stadiums are Clemson and Florida State.  They seat 20,000 more than North Carolina, Maryland or Minnesota.

Not at all easy to get to Ryan Field, unless you're not tailgating and use the rail system to get there.

The cities with long term NFL franchises I think view CFB somewhat like places like Atlanta view the NFL.

That's cute.

YouTube keeps striking the Illinois-Maryland channel, so I'm contenting myself with streaming some High School football. Muleshoe Vs Tulia from the panhandle of Texas. McCook Vs Seward from "out there" in western Nebraska. Not much else happening on this do-nothing Friday night.

Was that the worst 3 and out in history?  Pretty close to it.   Peters takes two sacks and throws a ball to an OL and is called for Grounding.   4th and 37.   Maryland will have all day for a FGA or TD.

Yes, these stats are interesting. I would like to see 2nd string Alex Padilla get quality snaps, but Kent St. could push Iowa. It would be a good experience for Padilla against their pass defense. That said, Kent St. performs better on offense. I doubt Kent St. performs well against Iowa's defense.

Auburn's defense cannot cover the TE and their QB sucks. I don't really see them doing much in the SEC this year.

Florida looked very impressive however. I think they might be for real this year.

I watched the Browns do something like that about 7-8 yrs back......on successive drives. In like just over 3 minutes before the half they went from a 10-3 lead to down 13-10 on 2 fgs and a defensive TD  :sign0065:

As for Mullen, I think he's better than very good. He'll have Florida competing for titles before long imo.

As we approached halftime, I started fast-forwarding through the Purdue / Notre Dame game in large chunks because I was time-shifted anyway.

I noticed some interesting things in the stat lines...

Story of the game was big plays (and TOs)... Purdue gave them up. Obviously you give credit to the ND offense for making those big plays and snagging two interceptions, but otherwise there was not domination by the supposed top-15 Domers...
