Did you go chalk?

It does not appear as though you picked a single upset.

Technically 22VA Tech over 20W Virginia is an upset, I suppose, but it's in Blacksburg.

Colorado St at home over OSU3?

He also has GaTech over #24 Tennessee.  Thus the poll changes are:

I don't see a ton of room for upsets in Week 1.  At least ones I'd predict, something always happens.  It's kind of a lackluster Week 1 after the last couple of years.  GT over Tennessee I assume would be an upset.  Is Texas A&M winning in the Rose Bowl an upset?

Two years ago I had Minnesota over #2 TCU and VT over #1 OSU on opening weekend, and it didn't exactly pan out.

The Bama/FSU game will be interesting.  I suspect if FSU loses, they'll drop like ELA predicted (and shouldn't, I don't think they should drop below 5 myself, but they will).  However if Bama loses, they'll drop maybe to 5 at worst.

Polls are dumb.

Yeah, the trick is reflecting what will actually happen in the polls vs. what should happen.  I think they've gotten a little better in the last couple years about not punishing teams quite so much for expected losses, but who knows.  The tricky spot is that Michigan will have picked up a pretty good win, so I suspect FSU would slide behind Michigan, but was Michigan's win so good that they could leapfrog a couple teams ahead of them?  Not sure.

My supposition here is that it has a LOT to do with the scores and what the former chair of the CFP ranking committee called "game control".

In your projections #1 Bama beat #3 FSU 31-22 and you don't give a score for #9 Michigan over #16 Florida.  If Bama scores a late TD to make a highly competitive 24-22 game into a 31-22 win while Michigan beats Florida in the final seconds or OT then I don't think that Michigan will (or should) pass FSU.  On the other hand, if FSU scores two late TD's to turn a 31-8 blowout into a superficially respectable 31-22 loss while Michigan beats the tar out of the Gators then I think Michigan will (and should) pass FSU.

The score factor is also relevant for the other teams involved in the higher rankings:
Note that all of the teams mentioned are hosting except Bama/FSU (neutral, Atlanta), Mich/FL (neutral, Texas), Ohio State (at Indiana), and Washington (at Rutgers).  At least one will likely have a close call and drop for it.

The score factor is also relevant for the other teams involved in the higher rankings:
  • #2 Ohio State will be expected to beat Indiana rather handily on Thursday night.
  • #4 USC will be expected to beat WMU rather handily on Saturday.
  • #5 Clemson will be expected to beat Kent rather handily on Saturday.
  • #6 Penn State will be expected to beat Akron rather handily on Saturday.
  • #7 Washington will be expected to beat Rutgers rather handily on Friday although the game is in New Jersey so Washington would get some leeway based on the travel.
  • #8 Oklahoma will be expected to beat UTEP rather handily on Saturday.
  • #10 Wisconsin will be expected to beat Utah State rather handily on Friday.
  • #11 OkSU will be expected to beat Tulsa rather handily on Thursday.
Note that all of the teams mentioned are hosting except Bama/FSU (neutral, Atlanta), Mich/FL (neutral, Texas), Ohio State (at Indiana), and Washington (at Rutgers).  At least one will likely have a close call and drop for it.

Don't be surprised if PSU has a hangover game with Akron.  The Zips have an excellent coaching staff.

Rough day for the B1G-W!
With MSU losing to WMU and Rutgers losing to EMU, not a banner day for the East either.

Although throw in CMU over Kansas, and it might be the best Saturday ever for Directional Michigan, going 3-0 against P5 schools

I can't find your ranking of all teams (was that on the old board?) but IIRC you ranked UNL and MN #3&4 or 3&5 in the B1G-W while you had RU last and MSU pretty low in the B1G-E.

Losses to Directional Michigan are still bad, but two of the worst teams in the league losing to Directional Michigan seems less troubling to me than two midling teams.

I have a bad feeling about the Wyoming-Iowa game. The same sort of bad feeling I had going into the NDSU-Iowa game in 2016.

Projecting.  Will be interesting if they do go with the best game this week (Clemson-Louisville), or the solid but lesser games, that have better intangibles (Miami-FSU or USC-Texas)

They've already done FSU, and they seem to not like Pac 12 locations due to the early start, particularly USC.

Per RTF above, week one is officially set.  Even if it weren't, it seems beyond obvious.  You can't pass up #1 v #3 especially when the only other ranked v ranked game is #9 v #16.

I think week 2 is pretty obvious as well.  Unless one or both of tOSU and OU suffer enormous upsets in week #1 the Oklahoma at Ohio State game will be a top-10 matchup and the next best are good (better than week #1) but nowhere near THAT good.

By the time you get to week #3 there are a lot more variables.  Not only do you have to consider the possibility of upsets but you also have to consider that a top-10 team that starts out with two close calls against inferior opponents is going to drop even at 2-0.

if clemson/louis are both undefeated, that could be a top 10 matchup, but more likely top5/15. then again, usc/texas could be a top5v15 type matchup too.

personally, i'd prefer usc/texas, but either will likely be solid choice.

don't see miami/fsu unless the other 2 above fall apart from losses or something.

also don't think they'd pick bama after week 1, but that week looks so weak and it's few and far between when they get to go to nashville, so maybe.

Yeah, if it was in Tuscaloosa, I think they'd go to Bolder, but I think they take the chance to go to Nashville.

That's my other thought.  Also if Vandy doesn't upset KSU, it doesn't matter anyway.

As far as "odd" locations go that week?  They could finally throw WSU their bone.  Texas A&M-Arkansas in JerryWorld.  Navy is at home, they always like military locations.

1. Alabama (4-0)
2. OHIO STATE (4-0)
3. USC (4-0)
4. PENN STATE (4-0)

I'm not saying I disagree because I don't, but this will really highlight that gulf between the top-4 in the B1G and the rest.  We have three of the top-5 and four of the top-8.  Both of those are amazing.  But there are no other ranked teams and the next best (by record) are:
Iowa, Nebraska, or the Minnesota/Maryland winner might sneak in to the top-25 at 4-1 or 3-1 but this projects that as of late September we'll have four playoff contenders and 10 bad teams.

4 of the top 7 is less strong evidence of bias when you also have like 4 of the top 40.  When it's 4 of 7 and 7 of 20, that's different.

IIRC that was more the complaint, not how high the top teams were ranked but how high the middle, even low middle teams were, so that no matter who you played it was a "good" win/loss so temas could never drop, because even playing the 9th best team in the conference was a ranked opponent.

Looking at the B12 and B1G teams in your projected October 1 Poll it strikes me that the OU/tOSU game is VASTLY more important to the Sooners and the B12 than it is to the Buckeyes and the B1G:

From the perspective of the Buckeyes:  If the Buckeyes were to lose to OU then you could probably roughly trade places between Ohio State and Oklahoma.  A #14 ranked 3-1 Ohio State, would still be very much in the playoff picture with opportunities to prove themselves against #3 PSU, #4 Michigan, and #7 Wisconsin.

From the perspective of the B1G:  There would still be two teams in the top-4, another very close, and a fourth close enough to get in.  Moreover, if any other B1G team were to win the conference they would get major rankings boosts from wins over some of those teams so the B1G would still be VERY involved in the CFP race.

From the perspective of the Sooners:  They have only the OkSU game to improve their profile but they'll still need help.  With the loss to Ohio State they will likely find themselves behind the B1G Champion in the CFP pecking order either because it is the Ohio State team that they lost to or because it is a team that beat Ohio State.  They'll also likely be behind the SEC and ACC Champions which leaves them needing the P12 Champion to be a weak team.

From the perspective of the B12:  They are basically out of the CFP conversation unless/until the higher ranked conference leaders get beat.

except they had legitimate arguments for those rankings. not that the b1g teams in yours don't/wouldn't, they would as well. and why couldn't 3 of top 5, 4 of top 10, or 7-8-9 of top 25 be from one conference? it's not impossible nor is it unreasonable. unlikely, maybe, but not unreasonable and almost certainly not conspiratorial.

but mostly i'm just busting some chops here. hell, with the results here, i'd expect at least 2-3 of neb, minn, iowa, nw to be in the top 25 somewhere, and the other(s) to be near the top of the also receiving votes.

Kind of an odd week.  You have 4 games between ranked teams, which is good.  But you also have 6 ranked teams on their bye, which is bad.

would think wsu would be ranked higher. they have 2 wins vs otherwise undefeated teams in usc and colorado, both top15 currently and were top 10 at game time. still have 1 loss #11 wash and #13 stanford as well. that's a tough schedule if it plays out that way.

I'm getting way less upsets and I think it's because conferences are waiting to announce more night games now too, and that used to be a spot I'd look for prime upset games.

Based on ELA's predictions the B1GCG would be set before the final week's games.

In the East:
The worst Ohio State can do is a tie with PSU at 8-1 and the Buckeyes beat the Lions so the Buckeyes are headed for Indianapolis.

In the West:
Wisconsin will be outright champions no matter what.  The worst they can do is 8-1 and no other team can match that.

The other P5 CG's based on ELA's predictions:
ACC:
Florida State has clinched the Atlantic Division.
The Coastal Division is MUCH more complicated:
Big12:
There are no divisions in the Big12, instead the top two teams go to the CG.  Oklahoma State would already have clinched as they could do no worse than a tie for first.  Kansas State would already have clinched the second spot because they could do no worse than a tie for second with Oklahoma at 7-2 and back in week-8 ELA predicted that Kansas State would beat Oklahoma.

PAC 12:
North:
Stanford would already have clinched because they could do no worse than a tie with WSU and ELA predicted that Stanford would beat WSU.

South:
Colorado would already have clinched because they could do no worse than a tie with USC and ELA predicted that Colorado would beat USC.
SEC:
East:
Florida would already have clinched.

West:
Alabama and Auburn would be playing for the SEC-W berth in the SECCG.  This could get really interesting because if Bama were to lose to Auburn they would be in a similar situation to what Ohio State was in last year.  They would finish 11-1 and a co-Division Champion but with no CG.  They would also have a win over an ACC Divisional Champion and potential ACC Champ (FSU) much like Ohio State, last year, had a win over a P5 Champion (Oklahoma).  Additionally, if Bama were to lose to Auburn it would be on the road and, like Penn State last year, the Tigers would have both an OOC loss (@Clemson) and a conference loss (@LSU).

The CFP implications get really interesting:
Alabama (@Auburn) and Florida (vFSU) would essentially be playing 1/8th finals for the NC because for either of them the path to the NC is very clear:
However, if Florida and Bama were both to lose the SEC's playoff hopes would be somewhat tenuous.  Alabama would finish with the best record (11-1/7-1) but the Florida/Auburn winner would be the SEC Champion with a record of 11-2.  Meanwhile, the Seminoles picking up a HUGE quality win on the road against the Gators would bolster their chances but they'd still be a two-loss team.

Saturday, November 25

#18 Auburn 24, #1 Alabama 23
#12 MICHIGAN d. #2 OHIO STATE

It is interesting that I think Alabama's loss is MUCH more devastating than Ohio State's.  The CG's based on these predictions:
ACC:
Miami (11-1) v Florida State (9-3)

Big12:
Oklahoma State (12-0) v Kansas State (10-2)

B1G:
Ohio State (11-1) v Wisconsin (12-0)

Pac12:
Stanford (11-1) v Colorado (11-1)

SEC:
Florida (11-1) v Auburn (10-2)

Playoff spots:
IMHO, the surest bets are the potential undefeated P5 Champions:
The next best bets are the potential 1-loss P5 Champions:
Because Ohio State and Wisconsin play each other, only five of those six things can happen.  However, five is one more than the four available playoff spots so there is still a possibility that a 12-1 P5 Champion could be left out.
Title: Re: ELA 2017 Game by Game Predictions
Post by: medinabuckeye1 on August 23, 2017, 11:21:51 AM
Medina's theory of what happens if we do end up with five undefeated or one-loss P5 Champions:

First, in order for this to happen:
Second, I am further assuming that Ohio State beats Wisconsin in the B1GCG.  The reason for this assumption is simply because it makes the question more interesting.  A 13-0 Wisconsin is in no questions asked.  A 12-1 Ohio State is in the discussion.

Thus, the P5 Champions would be:
IMHO, OkSU is obviously in.  They have a relatively weak OOC, but they are the only undefeated team.

That leaves four 12-1 P5 Champions for three spots.  IMHO, the team left out would be either Colorado or Miami and I'm basing that almost solely on OOC SoS:
Ohio State (Oklahoma), Florida (Michigan), and Stanford (Notre Dame) each have one reasonably respectable OOC opponent.  Miami and Colorado do not.

Florida also plays Florida State. Tough schedule.
Title: Re: ELA 2017 Game by Game Predictions
Post by: medinabuckeye1 on August 23, 2017, 11:38:29 AM
In my last post I analyzed what would happen if we had the maximum (five) undefeated or one-loss P5 Champions.  In this post I'll do the opposite and analyze what would happen if we had the minimum (two) undefeated or one-loss P5 Champions:

First, in order for this to happen:
Second, I am further assuming that Ohio State beats Wisconsin in the B1GCG.  The reason for this assumption is simply because it makes the question more interesting.  An 11-2 Ohio State coming off of two-straight losses is not in the discussion while a 12-1 Wisconsin is.

IMHO the Pac12CG winner is in.  This would be either 12-1 Colorado or 12-1 Stanford.  Additionally the B1GCG winner would be in with no regard to whether it was 12-1 Ohio State or 13-0 Wisconsin.  After that it gets really dicey.  The contenders:
IMHO it would be Bama and probably Wisconsin (provided that Wisconsin put up a good fight in their CG).  The ACC and B12 would be out and the B1G would be the first conference to put two teams in the CFP.  However, I would alter this prediction if either:
FWIW:  If you alter the assumptions and assume that Wisconsin wins the B1G then I think the playoff field would likely be:
In that case I would expect the Auburn/Wisconsin winner to play Bama in the NC.

Easily the toughest of the group.  They absolutely are in as a 12-1 SEC Champion.

I'm anxious to see how you project the lost poll before the CG's with all the losses you project in the final week:
Obviously #11 Florida (now 11-1 and on an 11 game winning streak) will move up considerably.
#12 Michigan will also move up as well but with two losses they'll hit a ceiling long before the Gators.
#16 Washington is similar to Michigan with the two losses and beating #10 WSU isn't as impressive as beating #2 tOSU.
#18 Auburn (now 10-2) has the most impressive win of the weekend (season?) but similar to Michigan they have two losses so they will hit a ceiling.

With their losses to rivals Alabama and Ohio State join the 1-loss club along with Stanford, PSU, Miami, Colorado, and Florida.  How far will they fall?  They both still have some impressive wins on their resumes.

Florida State's loss makes them very hard to rank.  They will be a 9-3 team but the three losses were to Bama, Clemson (IIRC), and Florida so we are talking about losses to very good teams.

What to do with Auburn?  The Bama win is great but losses to #25 LSU and #13 Clemson hold them back.  How far can they climb?

My projection based on these projections (what I think would happen not necessarily what I think should happen):

ok st would be in, no question. undefeared p5 conf champ is in.

uf is in. 12-1 sec champ is in, especially considering ooc schedule

osu is in, imo. #5 beating #1 gets them in.

and stanford is in, imo. i'm not sure what game they lost, but they won at least 3 of wash, @ wash st, @ usc, colo (ccg), all of which are 10-win or better reg season.

miami schedule doesn't match up, imo, althought they do play fsu (x2), gt, and vt.

bama is out. not a champ.

seems like an awful lot of 0 and 1-loss teams this late. 9 p5 going into conf champ week. 10 counting usf, which would be ranked higher imo. good team.

edit: went and checked. wouldn't be that far fetched, though it would be highest amount since '12 (as far back as i went), but only by 1.

IMHO (per my post above):
Florida/Stanford winner plays Ohio State in the NC (this isn't an Ohio State thing, I'd say the same if OkSU was matched up with either UF or Stan).

It's the exact same thing.  Bama is 11-1 with a really good OOC win (FSU) but a head to head loss and no CCG appearance.  Auburn is 11-2 with a conference title, no good OOC win.

Committee already showed who they take in that scenario.

It's the exact same thing.  Bama is 11-1 with a really good OOC win (FSU) but a head to head loss and no CCG appearance.  Auburn is 11-2 with a conference title, no good OOC win.

Committee already showed who they take in that scenario.
It is certainly very similar but I don't think it is exactly the same because Bama's OOC win isn't quite as good as tOSU's last year and Auburn's losses aren't nearly as bad as PSU's last year:

It is certainly very similar but I don't think it is exactly the same because Bama's OOC win isn't quite as good as tOSU's last year and Auburn's losses aren't nearly as bad as PSU's last year:
  • Ohio State's big OOC win last year was against a team that went undefeated in their P5 Conference.  Ohio State also beat Oklahoma big, 45-24 and in a true road game.  I think that Bama's FSU win in this scenario isn't quite as good because:  1) You do NOT have FSU going undefeated in their conference.  2) Bama's win is closer (31-22 vs 45-24) and at a "neutral" site that will HEAVILY favor Bama.
  • Penn State's OOC loss last year was to a Pitt team that was 8-4 when the final rankings were made.  That is substantially worse than Auburn's OOC loss to the defending National Champion Clemson Tigers who you have going 10-2.
  • You don't provide score predictions for non-gameday games but I have to assume that you are not predicting that Auburn will lose to LSU by anything like the 49-10 blowout by Michigan over Penn State last year.

plus people feel osu was wrong team after the clemson beatdown. not sure committee will cave to pressure, but they'd be under a lot of it if this happened. i don't think they'd take bama. jmo.

It would be a heck of an interesting debate and there is no doubt that the Ohio State / Penn State precedent would be brought up by both sides.

Stipulate the following:
Thus you have four contenders for one spot.  Using ELA's projected final rankings, their record against ranked teams is (tell me if I missed any):
IMHO, Auburn has the toughest SoS.  Wisconsin and Penn State have three ranked opponents each.  Bama and Auburn have four.

I think based on the SoS I think that Wisconsin and Penn State are eliminated.  They are very similar to Bama but with worse SoS.

That leaves just Auburn and Bama.  Comparing the two:
I'd give it to Auburn because:
Last year PSU had two of the three but that wasn't enough because:

BOWL SCHEDULE

I absolutely love that it works out this way!  The classic B1G Champ vs PAC Champ Rose Bowl with the added twist that the winner gets to play Alabama for the National Championship!

I think as long as it's mildly plausible the committee will try and get that to happen.  In this case, I think it's obvious what the top 3 will be, and it just so happens to work out.

Definitely obvious that OkSU is #1 and Stanford/Ohio State are 2/3.  You could argue over #2 but it only determines which colors the teams wear in the RB.

#4 is the BIG DEBATE in this scenario.
