Title: #10 Iowa (1-0) at #9 Iowa State (1-0) Game Week
Post by: Hawkinole on September 05, 2021, 06:11:00 PM
Iowa showed limited offensive spark against Indiana. But, they didn't have to show much. Iowa's brand is to try to go up early by at least a couple scores in the 1st half, and then let the air out of the ball on both sides of the ball, and work the clock.

Iowa played 10 different O-Lineman against Indiana. There is quite a competition going on for the starting OL spots, except at center, where Tyler Linderbaum is expected to be All American.

Iowa State squeaked by UNI 16-10 on 9/4/2021, while Iowa's defense dominated Indiana 34-6 scoring two pick-sixes.

Iowa State has so many returning starter-stars. Prior to the Indiana game I would have projected Iowa State as the Cy-Hawk winner. I am not so sure, now. Iowa played well against a ranked opponent; Iowa State risked defeat through UNI's final drive.

Iowa State has the betting line for the Cy-Hawk game at about -3.5 to -4.

Before Matt Campbell the smart money was on Iowa St.

Now, just the opposite.

Just couldn't help your self of course Ferentz always wins big games - then he drops the next one

Of course not. However, if you look at the trends, it is obvious.

The annual series was revived in 1977, two years before the Hayden Fry era. They split the series in 77 and 78.

In the Hayden Fry era from 77-98 he went 16-4, but rattled off a 15 game winning streak along the way. (He won his first cyhawk game, but then dropped three straight. Then the 15 game winning streak. His fourth and final loss was in his final Cyhawk game).

Then Ferentz in the pre Matt Campbell era from 1998-2015 was 8-10 vs Iowa St, when Iowa St was a perennial 2 win team. It was almost unbelievable how much he struggled in that series. That is until Matt Campbell came along, when a much lower bar of ineptitude in the series was established.

The Ferentz-Campbell era of the rivalry has been all Iowa. 4-0, to build on a 5 game winning streak overall in the series.

So Ferentz has passed his "can't beat your rival" syndrome onto Matt Campbell, but it mutated along the way where it became an
'every year no matter what" sorta thing instead of a "lose more than you win" type scenario.

Lower bar of ineptitude? Leave your watering holes out of this and have some one get your electric football set fixed 😎

Well if I were to play devil's advocate I could point out that Ferentz lost his first five cyhawks. So maybe after this year's Cyclone shellacking, Campbell can turn it around and go 7-5 in the series over the next 12 games. If he is still here after that, he might even rattle off a five game winning streak of his own; mostly at the expense of some future Iowa coach who is otherwise doing pretty well outside of the cyhawk series.

Turns out this game will be the site of ESPN GameDay which is a repeat of GameDay coming to Ames in 2019 for the Iowa-ISU game.

The 2019 game was a disaster production wise.  The game was delayed multiple times due to thunderstorms,  finally finishing late in the evening with Iowa rallying for a close 18-17 victory. The Iowa victory was sealed by a ISU player running into their own punt returner, causing the punt returner to fumble the punt, killing ISU's last chance to win the game.

Meanwhile the situation was chaotic once the game was finally over.  Nobody knew where the busses were parked.  After being picked on by ISU fans all day,  the Iowa band escalated things by arrogantly trying to march through a crowd of ISU fans playing the Iowa fight song, the ISU fans started pushing the band and a small fight broke out.

Anyway, the word is that the Iowa band will not be making the trip to Ames this year.

Really pumped about this game. Huge for the state and a monumental opportunity for both teams as far as national recognition goes. Not going to break this game down to much. Just keep going back to this is Iowa State's best team possibly ever, and have a roster loaded with senior talent. Iowa has a much more athletic team then recent memory but if I had to put money down on an offense to make a 4th quarter winning drive, Iowa State is my pick. Heart says Iowa by 60. Head says ISU by 3.

THe new AP rankings are out and both teams are now in the top 10 (ISU #9, Iowa #10).  I can't remember a time with both teams ranKed this high.  This has to be the biggest game ever in the history of the series.

Rumor has it that the Big 12 will be voting maybe as soon as Friday to add BYU, Hou, Cincy and UCF to the conference as a response to Tex and Ok leaving.

With ESPN GameDay coming to Ames on Sat, this will be the Big 12's chance to show that they are not dead yet and may still be considered a power conference going forward.

Now if ISU can find a way to beat a good Iowa team, that could also help with the whole Big 12 is still a power conference narrative.  But if Iowa beats ISU again, that will probably deflate the Big 12's party.

Turnip the volume for this hoedown throw down.  It'll be udder farmageddon.  Certainly the biggest thing in Iowa since daylight savings time.  Too bad it couldn't be played on Fry-Day, but maybe a Saturday matchup Ames to get more outside viewers.

Anyhow yeah I like the Hawkeyes in a close one.

I have a shirt with that logo somewhere, that I got as a souvenir from their Marcus Fizer Elite 8 team, when they played the regional finals in Detroit.

Clemson, Bama, Georgia, Ohio St., Oregon, Notre Dame, A&M should all be rooting for the blender bird

ISU has a better chance of going undefeated or as a 1 loss champ in the Big 12 than Iowa in the Big.

This could possibly give the Clones a spot in the playoff, leaving someone mentioned above on the outside

I don't know about this statement. Historically, Iowa State never won the Big 12 or Big 8 conference football championship. Iowa has won or shared a Big Ten title 11 times. Historically, Iowa has been better.
Looking at schedules, Iowa State plays two ranked teams other than Iowa, namely 4th ranked Oklahoma (at Oklahoma), and 15th ranked Texas (at home).
Iowa has 11th ranked Penn State (at home), and 18th ranked Wisconsin (at Madison) scheduled. Iowa's remaining schedule appears somewhat lighter after this weekend.
There is the risk Iowa plays 3rd ranked Ohio State, Penn State, or Michigan in the Big Ten Championship, if Iowa somehow navigates it's way through to a Western Division title. Iowa State risks 4th ranked Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship.
I believe it is harder to go undefeated in the Big Ten than to go undefeated in the Big 12 which may be what spawned this post because of the nature of rivalries in the Big Ten (especially Iowa's - 3-trophy games (excluding Iowa State) and they are all big rivalries), and home field advantages of Big Ten schools. I can see MedinaBuckeye fact checking this statement and doing a statistical analysis of teams going undefeated in the Big Ten, Big 12, SWC, and include the # of teams in conference play, and actually played, and relative advantages in each conference of HFA, to prove my anecdotal belief to be without factual backup. It just seems that in my lifetime Big 8 Nebraska and Big 8 Oklahoma did not often have strong opponents, aside from each other. Occasionally Colorado; and occasionally Missouri would rise up.
Iowa State hasn't been in either Nebraska's or Oklahoma's position, so they don't have the experience of being king of the hill. Are they now?

Historically, I could agree, but that's long past history for these kids that are playing

it's 2021

history won't matter Saturday and the rest won't matter until after Saturday

I think ISU's path to the post season is easier than Iowa's

perhaps, not much, but.. a bit

It's too early to make definitive statements on schedules, but right now I feel like ISU has a slightly better chance of finishing top 2 in the Big 12 than Iowa does winning the B1G West.

not to offend anyone or any fan base.............  just a story of a delusional Hawkeye fan. (all fan bases have them)

playing men's league golf match last night - my partner, a hawkeye fan, states he's going to Ames Saturday to attend the game with his son, an ISU freshman.  and that, yes, Dad will be wearing Cyclone colors for his son.

both opponents are Hawk fans.  One of them, the delusional partner, an otherwise great guy that I like, states that this is the first time EVER that Iowa State has been favored by the vegas line.  I try to correct him.  He tells me that we've only had betting lines for 10 or 20 years.  He then states that the first football game between the two schools was played in 1978.  I tried to correct him on that.

As a Husker fan with a crap team for the past decade, I decided just to drop the subject.

The guy is intelligent, about my age, and an all around good guy.

Screw that.

If my son goes to IU [spit!] or, gawd forbid, Notre Dame [vomit], and I go to a game between either school and Purdue, I'll be fully decked out in the Old Gold and Black.

He may be my son, but I loved Purdue first.

I thought you'd never ask!!!

I actually shot my best round in league play in two or 3 seasons - a smooth 39 - a double, a single, and 7 pars
I didn't make a putt outside 5 feet, they had just aerated the greens and poured sand on them - very bumpy and slow

Lol, ESPN GameDay, which is in Ames, Iowa today for the Iowa-Iowa State game,  actually built a fake cornfield for the ISU mascot to run out of to start the show.

Everybody had fun with it.  Then they had a bunch of kids run out if the cornfield too.

Yeah, which is why a lot of us scoffed when it was suggested that the B1G should pick up ISU because they're "good at football"... Yeah, they've been good for about a minute. Historically, they're about as bad as Indiana.
