I bet Iowa now feels really cheated out of the opportunity to play Indiana in champions week last year. If Iowa beats Indiana like that last year, the Hawkeyes probably would have been invited to a NY6 bowl. Oh well, 2020 will always be the year full of what-ifs.

I made adjustments, but surprisingly, I was close in Week 0 to what I have in Week 1. Usually this first week requires large adjustments, for me.

My top 4 are the same. At 5 and 6, I switched Michigan and Indiana. Minnesota is still 7th. I shuffled the rest of the deck more thoroughly.

Let's be honest, it won't be until mid-season until we actually know who the good teams are. Oh well, let's give this a shot anyway. Except for NW and Neb both dropping a lot, my teams did not move too much.
1. OSU
OSU did about what I expected with a brand new QB playing against a good Minnesota team.
2. Iowa
Iowa's offense still looks very average but that may be good enough because that Iowa defense looks awesome.
3. PSU
Going on the road and winning in Madison is still pretty hard to do.
4. Wisc
Maybe this is too high. Wiscy needs to figure it out because Iowa has now passed them as the new favorite to win the West.
5. Indy
It looked like Indy was totally dominated by Iowa but I have a hunch if they played again the score would have been more like 17-13 like everybody expected.
6. Minn
I thought Minny looked pretty good against OSU, although the defense clearly ran out of gas in the end. A lot may depend on the health of Minny's RB going forward.
7. Rut
Blew out an AAC Temple team
8. MD
MD beat Big 12 team WV.
9. Pur
Pur beat PAC-12 team Oregon St.
10. MSU
MSU dominated NW
11. MICH
Maybe this is too low but I am still looking for that key win that says Mich is back after a bad season in 2020.
12. NW
I think I got NW figured out. Even numbered years good. Odd numbered years bad.
13. ILL
Still tempting to put ILL last but UTSA may soon be a top 25 team.
14. Neb
Somebody has got to be last and Neb lost to the team I have ranked 13th.

1. Ohio State - Top ranked till someone knocks them off
2. Penn State - Best Chance to upset OSU?
3. Wisconsin - I think they are still the team to beat in the West
4. Iowa - That was an impressive beat down
5. TTUN - Helmet's gonna Helmet, till they don't.
6. Minnesota - Went Toe to Toe with the B1G's King, and lost their RB. Gonna need to see those backup fail before dropping this team lower
7. Maryland - Seems to have enough 1st string talent to get the big win, can they stay injury free?
8. Purdue - Beat the Pac's annual cellar dweller
9. Mich State - Nice season opener, still think there is a lot of question here
10. Indiana - Prolly better than this ranking, but man that was a beat down and they looked bad
11. Rutgers - I didn't see them, gonna on previous 'Meh' reputation.
12. Northwestern - I would have bet money they took out MSU, I would have been wrong
13. Illinois - One more loss from going back to the Cellar
14. Nebraska - How bad does that week zero loss look?

- OHIO STATE (1) - no reason to change
- PENN STATE (3) - major early statement from Franklin's defense
- IOWA (5) - look like the class of the West
- WISCONSIN (2) - last season's offensive struggles do not appear to be a blip
- MICHIGAN (6) - WMU has no defense, but their offense should be good, so it does seem like UM's 2020 defensive struggles were a blip
- MARYLAND (7) - recruiting uptick starting to show itself
- MINNESOTA (8) - acquitted themselves pretty well all things considered
- INDIANA (4) - need another pandemic season ASAP
- MICHIGAN STATE (11) - offensive talent upgrade is apparent
- PURDUE (9) - solid win
- RUTGERS (13) - I thought they'd take a half step back, but so far, so good
- NORTHWESTERN (12) - Hunter Johnson looks much better than he did in 2019, but the rest of the offense, woof
- ILLINOIS (14) - and crash!
- NEBRASKA (10) - at least they handled a bad FCS team

1) Iowa - most complete team right now
2) Ohio State - most talent and potential, but not a finished product.
3) Penn State - as others have said, heroic defense and offense did enough
4) Wisconsin - caught some bad breaks after generally outplaying PSU.
5) Michigan - played to their talent for the first week and beat a game opponent

Now it gets tricky
6) Indiana - I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that Iowa City is a tough place for your first game
7) Minnesota - I would have them 5th with Mo, but this may be too high without him.
8) Maryland - They've had nice wins over Texas x2 and Syracuse then flopped later in previous years.
9) Michigan State - Impressive game. My eyes tell me they'll beat the U.
10) Purdue - Plummer looks improved.
11) Rutgers - Emphatic win
12) Northwestern - Hard to say if they are bad or if MSU is good. Probably somewhere in the middle.
13) Illinois - UTSA is solid, but would they beat anyone else besides...
14) Nebraska - based on what we know now, but could move up later.

Early computer polls, are deranged polls, but fun to view if you are a hayseed in rural NE Iowa just 20 miles from the Field of Dreams.

Lotta West teams at the bottom. Actually really impressed with Minnesota but want to see the team without Ibrahim. Devastating injury. OSU and Iowa with major tests this week. Not sure what to make of Michigan, but they do have an interesting game vs a Washington team coming off a major upset loss to Montana. Purdue, MSU and Rutgers all look to have strong offenses and we will see how they carry over in the coming weeks. Indiana I think has a really talented defense, but boy do they have some work to do on the other side.

- Ohio State -1 Didn't look like a CFP team but there is time to work on things.
- Penn State -3 Wins in Madison are impressive.
- Wisconsin -2 Played well against PSU but left way too many points on the field.
- Iowa -4 Looked REALLY good, or is IU that bad?
- Michigan -5 Looked like a top-tier B1G team should look against a decent MAC team.
- Minnesota -7 Looked good in the loss.
- Maryland -12 WVU is a decent team and UMD beat them. Now will this be like past seasons or can they keep up?
- Rutgers -13 Looked like a quality B1G team.
- Michigan State -11 Are they this good or is NU this bad?
- Indiana -6 I doubt they are as bad as they looked but that was ugly.
- Purdue -10 Got a win!
- Northwestern -8 That was ugly.

For about the eighteenth time I wasn't arguing with you, I questioned it because your ranking was substantially different from the group and I wondered what you saw that made you think that. Right now, looks like you were right.

For basically the entire time that there has been a B1G-E and a B1G-W to compare the B1G-E has been top and bottom heavy. Typically the B1G-E ended up with #1 (Ohio State) and one or two others (typically PSU and one of the Michigan Schools) near the top and then a bunch of bottom feeders.
At least so far this week that has dramatically changed. As the votes stand right now the bottom four teams are all from the B1G-W (UNL, NU, IL, PU).
Obviously there is a LOT of football left to be played and things can (and will) change a LOT between now and the end of the season but at least for now it *LOOKS* like the bottom feeders from the B1G-E have gotten off the mat and put together decent teams such that, at least for now, it *LOOKS* like the B1G-E is substantially better than the B1G-W.

Oh the Big Ten East will have some bottom feeders again this year. We just don't know who they are yet.
Every year there is a school or 2 that looks good early then falls apart quickly ( I'm looking at you MD). Last year it was Michigan and Purdue. Michigan blew out Minnesota in the opener last year, then never looked any good the rest of year. Purdue started out 2-0, then never won again. Both teams were saved in a way by COVID outbreaks that forced them to cancel their last couple games

1. Ohio State - Still need work on Defense.
2. Iowa - Pretty dominating performance. Not sure Indiana is the team people think they are.
3. Penn State - Great road win against a good team.
4. Wisconsin - Need to work on scoring while in the red zone.
5. Michigan State - Impressive performance by their RB.
6. Minnesota - Not sure they can maintain here without Ibrahim.
7. Michigan - Started slow but ultimately did what they were supposed to do.
8. Maryland - Nice win vs WV.
9. Purdue - Good come back win against Oregon St.
10. Rutgers - Did what was expected against Temple. Not sure they would have done that in the past few seasons.
11. Indiana - Ran into a buzz saw at Iowa.
12. Northwestern - Got ran over by Mich St.
13. Illinois - Tempted to move them below Nebraska after loosing to UTSA
14. Nebraska - Lost to the team that lost of UTSA

There is a muddled mass in the middle, these are the only things that eight or more of the 17 of us agree on:
- 16 of 17 agree that tOSU is #1
- 12 of 17 agree that UNL is #14
- 11 of 17 agree that Il is #13
- 10 of 17 agree that NU is #12
- 10 of 17 agree that PSU is #2
- 9 of 17 agree that UW is #4
- 8 of 17 agree that UMD is #7
For all but the top-4 (tOSU, PSU, IA, UW) and the bottom-3 (UNL, IL, NU) I can see arguments for almost anything between #5 and #11:
- #5 Michigan, votes from #3-11: They recruit well and looked great but they also started last year looking great . . .
- #6 Minnesota, votes from #5-12: They looked decent against what could be a CFP team but what if tOSU isn't all that good?
- #7 Maryland, votes from #6-11: They beat WVU and WVU is usually at least competent but they also had good looking early season victories in recent seasons that raised expectations that were not met.
- #8/9 Michigan State votes from #4-12: They beat the snot out of NU but what if NU is just THAT bad?
- #8/9 Indiana, votes from #5-12: They had a great record last year and return a lot of people but they looked awful in Iowa City.
- #10 Rutgers, votes from #6-11: They beat the snot out of Temple but maybe Temple is just THAT bad?
- #11 Purdue, votes from #8-11: They beat a P5 team but it was a notoriously bad P5 team.

The big changes were that MSU (+3.65), UMD (+2.19), RU (+2.15), PU (+1.58), and Iowa (+1.45) were way up while IU (-4.58), NU (-4.22), and UNL (-4.13) tumbled. All other teams were within +/-1 of their preseason average ranking.

In this weeks game, Wisconsin needs to be to show that they have cleaned up mistakes at QB play, OF line play and DF back play. The real test will be next week against Norte Dame. A win keeps them in the top four or a loss drops them to the middle of the pack.
