Politicians and covid are excluded from this thread by the Geneva convention. I'm on my porch drinking coffee, watching the chipmunks run around. The Lions are all in Wisconsin.

No special food on the menu for us today, but next week, when we play the Arkansas razorbacks, I'm definitely doing pork BBQ.  Maybe a pork butt, or we might even go whole hog.  I haven't done whole hog in many, many years.

61 glorious degrees here this morning - windows open

I'll try to get the cheesy Lion's game on the phone while at the golf course.

Too disappointed to listen to my Huskers

I helped the local small town bar owner (my neighbor) set up two new TVs in his beer garden for the Hawkeye fans yesterday.

my menu might be on the 19th hole at the golf course watching the Hoosiers, could be at a buddy's garage, could be at the small town bar a couple blocks away, or could be from my kitchen, it's well stocked with pork chops, burger, brats, pizza, & chicken breast.

but one thing is fer sure, plenty of Budweiser

Stayed up too late last night, woke up not quite physically feeling up for a run. Knocked out a 2 mile walk. Soon I drive to the town I used to live in, get some lunch with friends at my favorite sandwich place. Then bounce around and watch some ball.

Should be a day.

Brown mustard would probably improve it.

Mmmm, no I want some barbecue with mustard sauce. Turned down a chance to get some this afternoon. Will have to swing around and rectify that at some point in the next couple months.

Up, dog has been walked, coffee brewed, and now I'm gonna settle in for some Gameday.

Not cooking tonight. Didn't want any distraction from the Purdue game which for once doesn't start at 9 AM. Also didn't want the wife to cook something that I'd feel bad about eating in front of the TV.

So we're gonna take a Jeep ride down to Pizza Port Brewing Co in San Clemente for lunch, then hit the outlets because I need some new New Balance to wear with my cargo shorts.

Back by 4, game on, and we're going to do takeout from Taco Mesa which is around the corner.

Pizza and tacos, a great menu for the opening day of the season.

Made this last night... MMM... Anchovies.

It's pasta burro e alici, or pasta with butter and anchovy.

I saw it on Bobby & Giada in Italy, and knew I had to give it a try.

Very simple recipe. Gently melt the butter and anchovy (perhaps with a little boiling pasta water for heat, although you can put the pan over the boiling water as a double boiler to do it gently) until the butter is melted and the anchovies have broken down to become part of the sauce. Add the pasta, and enough extra pasta water to get the sauce smooth and emulsified, and you're done. 4 ingredients.

Definitely a learning experience. The first bowl (pictured) didn't have enough pasta water, which is probably why it looks more buttery than saucy. When I went for seconds, I added some water and suddenly it was completely transformed into this silky delicious amazingness.

Can't wait to try it again. My wife... Not so much. She'd never had anchovy before so she was willing to try this, but wasn't exactly a fan.

not a big fan of anchovies or sardines, but had a pasta in Sicily that had both with toasted breadcrumb and it was out of this world.

Usually the simplest recipes are the best. But sometimes they are also the hardest to make because of the technique. Cacio e pepe is just pecorino cheese, toasted black pepper, and pasta water- but I think it's the hardest pasta to make. Too much pasta water you've got a soup. Not enough pasta water you won't get a creamy sauce. Not enough heat on the pecorino you get a weird watery paste. Too much heat on the pecorino you get a nasty gooey string cheese. Timing, amounts, and heat control have to be perfect to make that- it's tricky af and super easy to ruin.

I wear New Balance because they work the best for me as running shoes.

I had no idea they were the official "dad shoes" until my wife told me a couple of years ago.  So now I'm not allowed to wear them, except when I'm actually running.

Extremely early, but I am liking Blake Corum a lot. He's a physical runner despite his short stature. He can run between the tackles and catch the ball, he's shifty and he's got more burst/speed than any RB I can remember at Michigan since probably Carlos Brown. Brown was very fast in a straight line, but pretty much not good at anything else.

Yeah, we've gotten pretty good at cacio e pepe. We were doing it every other Friday during the pandemic, and eventually came up with a mix of three different recipes until we got it right.

That said, ours is not traditional as we use more than cheese, pepper, and pasta water. But it's delicious and repeatable.

Bear in mind, New Balance are not Dad shoes. White New Balance are Dad shoes. The more stylish running shoes are ok.

3rd and 15 and you call a run? This offense is the same sad sack of shit. Harbaugh is a f#kn moron and Gattis is an OC in name only. Harbaugh is heavily involved and his fingerprints on everything. The guy is a f#kn shmuck and the game has passed him way by.

Blake Corum is really good. McNamara is like ELA said- probably the most legit QB they've had since Jake Rudock. The OL looks iffy, and the offensive coaching staff are still literally retarded.

Going to be a long season.

I use a touch of olive oil when I'm toasting the black pepper and a few crushed but whole cloves of garlic to flavor the pan, but I remove the garlic once it's done it's job. I also use a little bit of butter to help emulsify everything. The Italians probably wouldn't have a problem with the butter or oil, but the garlic they might get upset about. They don't use the garlic in everything like the Italian-Americans do here.

HORSESHIT call. RIDICULOUS catch and nice outside sideline shoulder throw by McNamara.

Even when they execute at a ridiculously high level like that right there- Michigan still sucks. It's crazy. This team is cursed.

Harbaugh should've been a psychotic maniac dog-cussing the shit out that ref for that bullshit offensive PI call. Old Harbaugh would've done this- and it would've set the tone and energized the team. The dude is on straight up meds now, staring off into the distance eating boogers not even giving a shit. He's not the same guy.

Attached is our version.

I really do want to try it with some super starchy pasta and just do it fully traditional with only water, cheese, and pepper... But our method is pretty solid.

Tulane hanging in there with the Sooners.  OU has trailed twice, but just now finally took their first lead at 21-14.

I suspect the final will be more like 49-14 but the Green Wave are playing with some heart right now.

great. Ronnie Bell is hurt returning a punt. I swear to god Jim Harbaugh is a certifiable retard. Why the hell would you put your best, most proven #1 WR as the return man? Use a back-up. Use Donovan Edwards. Use Blake Corum.

Timed ending three weeks of work in Portland with attending today’s Oregon Ducks home opener Vs Fresno State. Just got into stadium; 50 minutes to kickoff.

Attendance required proof of Covid vaccination or negative Covid test taken within last 3 days, which took me until late last night to sort out. At the gates my paperwork was barely glanced over before they scanned my (digital) ticket. Everybody inside stadium wearing masks.

First time to Autzen; first college football game in two seasons thanks to Covid last year. Either way good to have you back, College Football.

Gray has gotten lucky with a couple drops and he's gotten away with some tugging/yanking that probably should've been called PI. Looks a lot better than he did last year. But: it's Western Michigan.

DL has looked better than I thought. We all knew Hutchinson was the real deal. Ojabo is flashing however and the other guys look a lot better than I thought they would. Hinton actually looking like he might be that OMERRRRG FIVE STARRRRRZ he was when he was a recruit. So there's that.

so..that's why AJ Henning was an early OMERGGG 5 STARZZZ before injuries derailed his HS career. SPEEEEEED. He missed almost 2 years of HS and still wound up a 4* and top 100 player in that 247Composite.

Been preaching about him on here for a couple years. Kid is fully healthy, and he definitely has the goods. Type of explosive player Michigan has been sorely lacking on offense.

yeah I get it's Western Michigan;

But this Michigan team has real skill talent. Which is not something I could say very often for a long time.

Ronnie Bell (knock on wood it's not a complete ACL blow-up), Blake Corum, AJ Henning, & Roman Wilson all flashing speed/explosion that outside of DPJ (who wound up being a 6th round pick) & Eddie McDoom (who was on the team for 5 minutes and only allowed to do end-arounds bc he had zero hands) - you just really haven't seen from too many Michigan players on offense in Harbaugh's entire tenure.

Donovan Edwards only has 3 touches, but he flashed a little bit of pep in his step too.

JJ McCarthy has special talent. This is the most naturally talented QB I've seen at Michigan since Drew Henson. And I don't think it's really close. The effortless throwing motion, ball just jumps out of his hand, and the ability to move the pocket and throw on the run- kinda reminds me of Henson.

Henne had a gun, could move a little bit- but really couldn't throw on the run at all. Mallett had the strongest arm I've ever seen- but completely immobile- couldn't move at all and sure as hell couldn't throw on the move.

highest rated recruits at QB's since 2000 at Michigan....

5 STARZ
Drew Henson
Chad Henne
Ryan Mallett
Shea Patterson
JJ McCarthy

Henson was the real deal. Henne was pretty damn good. Mallett was only here for all of 5 mins. Patterson overrated- didn't have the arm talent or athleticism he was hyped to have.

Very small sample size, but McCarthy sure looks like the real deal. He can move and throw on the run, ball jumps out of his hand. He's accurate and his ball placement is high level. Let's just hope that Harbaugh doesn't ruin him.

That's a preposterous outcome.

Once upon a time they were in the same FSC Conference. Then Holy Cross got kicked out for sucking, while UConn moved up to the Big East.

So the Huskies have fallen so far that they lose by double digits to a team that wasn't even good enough to be a member of the FCS Conference that the Huskies once belonged to.

Massive no-call there.

Purdue WR Bell had position and a defender ripped him to the ground well before the ball arrived on what was otherwise a sure TD.

Then on 4th down, Purdue has a delay of game AND a sideline penalty on Brohm on the same play to move backwards and turn a 33 yard FG attempt into a 53 yard attempt.

Purdue burns a TO and punts instead.

Purdue up 13-7 at the half. Get the ball first after the break.
I think everyone expected a tight defensive battle

I was cussing Kirby for being too conservative and then Clemson threw a pick 6 so what do I know?  Somebody has to start throwing downfield to loosen the other team up though.  Side note: both of these defenses are freaking playing fast as lightning.

I love how Gus calls the game, and Just kinda ignore Klatt.
Gus used to make it worth it, but I think he's kind of become a caracture of himself, like late John Madden, or the past two decades of Dick Vitale.

And then to pair him with Klatt, who shouldn't even be doing Tuesday night MACtion...

The Defensive Lines, and their pressure on the QBs, are dominating this Top 5 matchup.

Speaking of defense, I won’t be surprised if UCLA hands it to LSU in Pasadena. Bruins D hitting just as hard. And LSU’s offense still looks lost without Joe Burrow. (What of note has Orgeron ever won without his Heisman shot-caller?)

Former Michigan RB Charbonnet follows his blocks for a TD; UCLA up 14-7 in 2nd Q.

Purdue up 16-7 going into the 4th. OrSU with the ball.

I count at least three opportunities where Purdue could have blown this open, while their defense has limited OrSU.

Closer than it should be, which we're gonna remember if they let this slip away.

A lot of ranked teams lost yesterday, or Friday,  part of the reason being obvious.

I had consumed some Koolaid on LSU previously.  I thought the Clemson/UGA Os would score points other than a single FG.  I guess UGA was in position to add a FG at the end, but didn't need it.  I thought UNC was over rated.  I thought Bama would be Bama and demolish the Canes.  I think A&M is good but not great.

I also think "we", me included, tend to draw too much from Week One.  A team like Wisconsin lost, sure, but clearly were competitive with an apparently good PSU team.

Oklahoma is going to drop in the ratings, not that is matters yet.

I'd go with:

1.  Bama
2. tOSU
3.  UGA
4.  OU I guess
5.  A&M

Nobody else really played anyone.  Clemson should be maybe 10.  I notice that programs like Cincy have a nice year and often then fade from view.

ESPN all ready chirping the SEC should have the top 3 teams.

1) Alabama
2) Georgia
3) Oklahoma (And yes he called OU an SEC team)

and shockingly they have OSU at 4 until they can justify moving Texas A&M up.

The lack of offense shown is a ding on UGA, I'm sure they will score more on inferior teams of course.  And Clemson showed a lot of proficiency on D.

OU looked sketchy to me, but they could well start mowing teams down.

OU's offense hasn't been a problem, but their defense was supposed to be improved this year.  It's only one game, but right now, that doesn't appear to be the case.

BTW, New Balances are often a very dad shoe, especially the gray ones, especially with cargos.

Some of the styles can be pretty good, but still have a tinge of dad. But if they're supposed to be for running, that's fine because running shoes should be kinda ugly in a flashy way.

I love the New Balance discussion.

My current ones are blue, with red accents/lettering.  The previous ones were gray, with green accents/lettering.  I've never had a white pair, they'd get too dirty, you know, from all the running.:)

I did a 5-mile run this morning, already very hot and humid, I jumped in the pool to cool off.  But I think the shoes are starting to give out, they only seem to last 300-400 miles.

Meh.
Rankings often don't move much early. And they sometimes don't move if games are certain kinds of close.

SP+ uses something close to yards per play, which UGA won 4.2-3. But in terms of scoring, a Pick 6 is all kinds of fluky, and that really was the main difference score-wise.

The FPI is an algorithm. It is still using lots of preseason data, but a close game against a top five team is unlikely to change much. Oklahoma dropped a spot, because a close game against a not top 25 game will change things a bit.

I knew FPI is basically a computer "poll" and projects chances of winning the NC etc.  I also am pretty sure sports sites contrive as many poll types as possible for clicks.

Whether your team is 3 or 8 or 15 at this point means little beyond the obvious.  But they gotta entertain.

It's not really a "poll." It's a power rating akin to those for gambling purposes. They can be useful or interesting depending on what you're looking at

That said, anything that ranks things is good for the clicks business. And a ranking that doesn't immediately respond to a game's outcome is going to drive a lot of irrational people to boost business (even if the ranking isn't about responding to what just happened).

The transfer portal has made things pretty silly.  I was watching Florida vs FAU and it took 6 min before they mentioned one of their players that WASN'T a transfer.
QB from Miami
RB from South Florida
WR from Clemson
.
I know it's similar everywhere, but I think for the G5 programs, no one they recruited and signed ever touches the ball.

I wonder if there's an "intent" element there. Like it gets bunched in with weird foibles that just get overlooked.

(The end of regulation one probably was?)

I guess, though intent doesn't matter if a receiver is in the area, even if grounding is what was clearly intended.

They can only focus on one thing at a time.  I liken it to when the catcher is set up on the outside corner, but the pitch hits the inside corner.  But due to missing the target so badly, that strike is almost never called.

Here’s the ones I count:

That's 23 points basically just left on the field.

And I realize someone can look at that and say it's one-sided and OrSU must have had similar chances... But no. They really didn't. Probably their biggest missed opportunities were turning it over on downs 3 times... But that's somewhat of an outgrowth of being 5-14 on third down, and while they had decent field position on all of them, it's not like they were giving up a FG to go for it--they were still in punt range if they didn't go for it.

So I catalogued the missed opportunities for Purdue...

Here’s the ones I count:

  • Bell PI: It was a blatant PI. The DB tackled Bell in the end zone on a perfectly thrown pass, well before the ball got there, where Bell had position.  That was a sure TD. Instead, that brought up 4th down, two penalties pushed us out of FG range, and 7 points turned into zero. Granted, the refs were to blame for this one, but it would have been a big momentum boost for the Boilers.
  • Anthrop dropped TD pass: Hard as hell catch, but having a FG instead of a TD there is a -4 point swing.
  • Fake FG/INT: The FG was potentially 3 points—if Durham secures that ball, it’s not a TD on that play, but it sets us up with first and goal inside the 5, so potentially 7 points. Instead it was zero. I'll call it a -4 point swing because even if he makes the catch but you don't get the TD, then it's a chip shot.
  • 1st and Goal at the 5 / 2nd and goal at the 1: We got three points out of it, but you need to be able to punch it in there for 7. So that was -4 points from expectation.
  • Milton dropped TD pass: No excuse for that drop. Another -4 point swing.

The OL has some issues to sort out.  If they fix some things this week and pummel UConn, I'd be optimistic going into the ND game.  Maybe not for the upset, but for how the season as a whole turns out.

On the flip side, I was very impressed with the defense.  They came up big with multiple 4th down stops, and critical 3rd down stops, as well as a nice interception to stop OSU.

Mo Ibrahim out for the season.
That's terrible. Feel really bad for him.

At what point does UConn kick football to the curb? Already off to one of college football’s worst ever starts.

Really? Not a coaching change? Not dropping down to FCS? Just eliminating the sport altogether? I dunno, seems a mite drastic to me.

Yeah, defense gets credit for that win.

That brakes my heart.  That young man is a stud RB and one of the best in the country.  Damn.

No thanks. The two situations are not comparable at all, even a little bit.

I hate that Edsall is gone this week. What if UConn decides to play out of their minds as they really around their new [interim] HC?

Drop UConn to FCS if you will (they are already losing to FCS schools and getting paid to be throttled like an FCS school), but otherwise who will notice if UConn stops playing football? Or better yet, how many will argue whether UConn was even playing football this past half-decade?!?!

Bishop Sycamore’s absence from their schedule is more noticeably missed than UConn would be from theirs. Even from Huskie fans.

Oh, I thought that you were using the UAB example in order to suggest that UConn should also drop the sport.

Mo Ibrahim out for the season.

Going to be really tough to replace him.
