Title: Any weird or crazy records at your school?
Post by: MikeDeTiger on September 03, 2021, 12:10:02 PM
I came across this and thought I'd share it because of the sheer bizarreness of it.

In a 1977 LSU blowout of Rice (77-0), the Tigers had a WR named Carlos Carson who had never before caught a pass, but caught 5 passes that night, all for TD's.  Passes from recent OC Steve Ensminger of 22, 29, 63, and 20 yds were hauled in by Carson and all went for TDs, and then another 67 yarder from backup QB David Woodley.

Amazingly, Carson's streak continued the next week as his first catch against Florida went for a 15 yard TD, giving him 6 consecutive TD passes on as many touches, a record so fluky that it still stands in NCAA records.

It got me wondering if there's any other weird outliers y'all know about at your school, or elsewhere.  Like, has there ever been a DL who recorded 4 consecutive sacks or a DB with 3 consecutive INTs or something?  Seems like in these point-a-minute offenses these days there ought to be a QB somewhere with a fluky number of consecutive TD passes, but I dunno.  I don't know where to look for something like this, but you'd think maybe a Herschel Walker might have a record of consecutive 10+ yard runs or something like that.  Weird streaks are interesting to me.

During Colt McCoy's 2008 or 2009 year where he set the comp% record, I wonder if there's a stretch in there where he's got the record for most consecutive completions.  Any interloping Longhorns know anything about that?

My most impressive stat from memory is that Herschel averaged 35 carries a game as a sophomore.

The other unexpected one is Aaron Murray with 13,133 yards passing career, an SEC top mark, which most would not guess.

Probably something like that occurred, but I don't think teasing out the data would be very easy.  You'd almost have to use a google key word search and just luck into an article from 12 years ago, that discussed it.

Yes, it's been so long since Tennessee beat Alabama it should no longer be longer be called a rivalry. Of course my opinion since the conference split rivalry games are in the same division not some half baked idea that arose decades ago between people who are dead and gone that didn't like each other.

2006 was the last time TN beat Bama if I'm not mistaken so this will be 15 years in the making come October.

I have a vague memory that Tee Martin had some kind of completion record in a game.

Here’s a record for your team Mike.

LSU holds the record for points scored in a game (72) and losing. 😀

Just kidding, I have no idea if that’s really a record but I figured why not ?

It's also a record for achieving a W/L stat of 3-1 for a single game.

A couple for Florida:
the long-standing longest TD pass of 99 yards was thrown by Cris Collinsworth - a WR.
.
And to 1-up Bratkowski's 8 INTs, John Reaves threw 9 INTs vs Auburn.

10 unbreakable records in college football (saturdaydownsouth.com) (https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/10-unbreakable-records-college-football/)

Interceptions, single game (9)

Who holds it: John Reaves, Florida, 1969
Why it’s untouchable: You’ve got to feel for Reaves, the Gators’ errant passer who tossed nine completions to the opposing defense at Auburn in 1969. The truth is, Florida didn’t have a second-team quarterback to relieve Reaves of his obvious tragic afternoon on the Plains and let the future first-round pick heave it 66 times during the game. Reaves led the SEC in passing yards and attempts all three seasons in Gainesville and is the league’s all-time leader in interceptions thrown with 59. Ouch.

One that stands out in my mind was the one point safety in the 2004 A&M vs UT game.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.texasmonthly.com/articles/video-that-time-there-was-a-one-point-safety-in-a-ut-am-game-2/amp/

AFAIK it’s only happened twice.

I remember that UT/A&M game.  Didn't know it happened again in an Oregon/KSU game.

Reminds me of Odell Beckham's failed FG return for a TD in 2013.  That was against a scrub team so the only noteworthy thing about it was prior to that the NCAA had no category for it and subsequently had to add one.  That would come in handy to catalog the second time it occurred--later that same year--Auburn's Chris Davis in the (in)famous Kick 6 to defeat Alabama and knock them out of title contention.  Those are the only two times I know of that's occurred.

I'm not exactly sure how/why it's noted separately from a blocked FG, because there's got to be lots of scoop and scores for TDs on those, surely.

That Brooks Dawson record is insane.
