Title: Michigan (1-0) vs. Western Michigan (0-1) Post Game
Post by: Temp430 on September 01, 2021, 10:03:22 AM
Saturday 12 Noon on ESPN

The Broncos went 4-2 last year which was better than Michigan.  So, they should be a decent test for Michigan's new defense.  I'm sure that the real chance that this game gets ugly will have many of you tuning it in rather than Penn State @ Wisconsin.

Go Blue!

Western Michigan Broncos at Michigan Wolverines
NOON - Ann Arbor, MI - ESPN
The troubling rend of defense under Don Brown at Michigan finally reached it's breaking point in 2020.  The Wolverines had fallen from 2nd in the nation in total defense in Brown's first season of 2016, but then fell to 6th, 8th, 10th, and then 56th last year.  Only Illinois surrendered more points per game in the Big Ten than the Wolverines, and had Michigan not dodged the Ohio State game, it may have been them at the bottom.  To replace him, Harbaugh hired co-coordinators, but after one was poached to be the head coach at Buffalo, the job fell solely on 34 year old Mike Macdonald, who spent the last 4 years as a position coach for John Harbaugh in Baltimore.  He certainly has no shortage of talent to work with, primarily thanks to Aidan Hutchinson turning down the NFL to return to Ann Arbor.  It would be helpful if Daxton Hill could find his pre-pandemic form.  The 5* recruit lived up to every bit of the billing as a freshman in 2019, but last year, he was invisible.  He wasn't a liability, he just was rarely doing anything of note.  Considering how much Michigan's cornerbacks struggled, Macdonald has committed to using Hill as a weapon all over the formation.  They won't have the luxury of figuring things out, because, for their other woes, the Western Michigan offense will actually be one of the best the Wolverines face all season.  The Broncos are the rare MAC team that lost a 2nd round pick, and shouldn't miss a beat.  Kaleb Eleby might not be the pro prospect that Nevada's Carson Strong is, but I think Eleby might be the best Group of 5 college quarterback out there.  He had 18 touchdowns a year ago, with just 2 picks, and finished 2nd in the nation in ypa, behind only Mac Jones.  Jaylen Hall and Skyy Moore both averaged over 65 yards receiving, as the second and third options; they have three running backs to use.  Michigan State transfer La'Darius Jefferson is the workhorse, and led the team in rushing, but is probably the team's third best back.  The problem is the defense...which let up over 34 ppg last year...playing only MAC opponents.  Michigan's offense may lack the star power we've seen in Ann Arbor, but they were plenty efficient last year, particularly with Cade McNamera replacing Joe Milton midseason, and being unspectacular, but playing winning football.  McNamera held off incoming 5* freshman J.J. McCarthy to retain the starting job, and I think the Wolverines are in the best shape at quarterback that they've been since Jake Rudock.  The remaining skill position players worry me a little going forward, but not against this defense.  The Broncos will push Michigan's defense all afternoon, but Michigan should respond by scoring at will themselves.
MICHIGAN 41, WESTERN MICHIGAN 30

see, I'm kind of the opposite. I like the skill players. Hassan Haskins is a really underrated RB. And I think Ronnie Bell and Cornelius Johnson are really underrated WR's. Let's face it, the WR's at Michigan haven't had a whole lot to work with at QB, like ever. Last year was no exception. WR's Roman Wilson & AJ Henning were true freshman last year- both are big-time talents with big-time speed who should see expanded minutes. TE is kinda scary however. Erick All is a very athletic TE- maybe the most athletic one I've seen at Michigan in awhile- if he fixes those hands- he could do some damage. Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards intrigue me at RB. Both are very different types of talent than what Michigan has had at RB under Harbaugh.

Not so sure on the QB's or OL. And I most definitely have literally zero faith in the head coach and OC.

It’s just one game, but the Wolverines looked much improved, steadier, more confident. I think the B1G is going to be strong this year with Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa all looking pretty strong - Minnesota, Michigan State, Maryland and Purdue looked promising in week one.

agreed. looked good, but it's one game. way too early to tell. we'll learn more about this team next week vs Washington.

I already knew I liked Haskins a lot at RB. Blake Corum really showed some flashes. That looks like it could be a phenomenal 1-2 punch at RB. Still unsure on the QB's and OL. Ronnie Bell looked fantastic at WR. I pray to god it's not a total knee ACL/MCL/PCL blow-out. Hopefully just a meniscus and he can be back in 6 weeks or so.

also: JJ McCarthy has insane potential. The ball just shoots out of his hands- he's got elite level arm talent. I haven't been this excited about a Michigan QB in oh- forever. McNamara had a couple really nice deep throws to Ronnie Bell- but other than that he really wasn't tested/asked to do a whole lot. Western's defense is well, not good.

It's going to be very interesting to see how JJ develops. That throw he made on the run across the field- not too many guys at Michigan have been capable of doing that since I've been watching. Only guy I can remember who could do things like that- Drew Henson.

also, just showing how much of a retard dipshit Jim Harbaugh truly is, and just how awful he truly is at developing/nurturing talent, he had this kid on his roster and ran him off:

kid is going to be All-PAC for UCLA this year. You can put that in stone. Might even push for All-American honors. Wouldn't shock me.

Bottom line- he's a future NFL draft pick with an NFL body/skill-set. You don't run guys off like that. Haskins is a nice college RB. In the mold of a De'Veon Smith. But he's not going anywhere after college.

Charbonnet stat-line at UCLA through two games (one of which was LSU) 17 carries, 223 yards, 4 TD's. He's averaging more than 13 YPC and a TD every 4 times he touches the ball.

just watched the game again, some things stood out to me on the defense;

It's a MAC school caveats apply, but Western had an elite offense in the MAC by the #'s last year and was favored to win the MAC, and returned nearly everyone from their offense last year. Aside from an early 1st QTR TD where Western marched down the field and it looked like it might be a long day for a Michigan defense that was truly terrible in 2020- Michigan's D blanked them. Western didn't score another point until garbage time in the 4th QTR when the game was 47-7 and way out of hand and Michigan unloaded the bench.

Aidan Hutchinson & Dax Hill both looked primed and ready for big seasons. Both these guys are future high NFL draft picks imo. Hutchinson has great talent but also a relentless motor. Dax Hill is one of the most freakish DB's in college football. They lined him up everywhere and he excelled everywhere. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hutchinson go late 1st rd or early 2nd, and I'd be shocked if Dax wasn't a top 10 pick. Why? He will blow the combine up, and at roughly 6-1, 190 with legit 4.3 speed and 40+" inch vertical- NFL teams will drool over the guys ability.

David Ojabo was a real surprise off the edge. Maybe he shouldn't be, he's a bonafide freak of nature. He could be the breakout player of the year for that defense. The tackling looked so much improved, sure tackles, good fundamentals- they really didn't miss any tackles. What was a little bit concerning was they were getting gashed up the middle on some run plays. The interior of that DL still looks like a work in progress. The only guy who looks like he can play is OMERRRRG FIVE STARRRRZZZ Chris Hinton. The pass rush looks like it will be very good. The tackling looked much improved. The coverage looked much improved. Still concerned a little bit about the interior DL & run defense.

That hurts the kid has another gear and made a hell of one handed snag that got called back, that appeared to be a very crappy call unless the ref saw something the camera didn't

With injuries to Bell this year and Waddle last year, I wonder if it is really worth putting your superstar WRs back there as PR/KR.

It isn’t. I am firmly against it.

Donovan Edwards or AJ Henning would’ve been a more than adequate PR guy.

No, everything the defense did is worth flowers.  WMUs defense sucks, there is nothing the offense could do to sway my opinion.  I figured UM would win a shootout.  If you told me the final was 63-35, that wouldn't have surprised me.  Holding that Broncos offense to 7 non garbage time points is legit impressive.

IIRC their offense was top 25 in SP+ last year.  Right next to Indiana's
