Title: #19 Penn State (1-0, 1-0) at #12 Wisconsin (0-1, 0-1) Post Game
Post by: 847badgerfan on August 30, 2021, 01:34:58 PM
Here we go with week one. UW released its depth today, and there are a couple of surprises here (at least to me).

I presume Wisconsin is a 4-5-6 point favorite?

Do they use a "real" fullback?

I saw that, but they could call a position that name without using him as a "real" FB.

Ha. It's Wisconsin. The fullback is real. There are 3 of them on NFL rosters too.

The real surprise here is that they listed two WRs, but only one TE.

I'm definitely nervous about this one.  However it goes, it will tell us a lot about both teams.

How many P5 programs feature a true fullback these days, aside from on the goal or something?

Pretty real. I mean, motions to TE some, but most real.

That part make a little sense.

Not listing a nickel makes no sense.

This game, and the Indiana at Iowa game are the best B1G games in week one. A lot of people expect a Penn State “bounce back”, after a disappointing 2020 season. Penn State has won the last 4 vs Wisconsin, but playing at Camp Randall is difficult (Penn State is fortunate that this is not a night game). Which team worked harder, over the Summer, and which team wants this one more? A lot of questions will be answered here.

The battle of QBs that have had their moments, but have largely disappointed so far?  I feel better about Mertz finding his way than Clifford.

Mertz will be improved.

Last season all of his WR were out for the season after week 2.

In our Preseason Power Rankings (https://www.cfb51.com/big-ten/b1g-power-rankings-preseason-23450/) we have Wisconsin second and Penn State third and it is close.  If we are correct in our assessment this game will tell us who has the best chance to unseat the Buckeyes.

The series:
These two teams only played twice before PSU joined the league.  Wisconsin won 20-0 in 1953 and 29-16 in 1970 both in Madison.  Then they missed each other in PSU's first two years in the league (1993/4).

That adds up to a 10-9 advantage for the Nittany Lions made up as follows:

As close as the overall series is, the Nittany Lions have won four straight and six of the last seven with Wisconsin's last win coming a decade ago.

Note that Wisconsin's win in 1995 snapped a 20-game winning streak for PSU and was only their third ever conference loss.

Those stats are also telling relative to the HFA thread, and why I'm nervous about it.

I'd say the opposite.  HFA doesn't seem to mean anything in this series.

whats the story on the two Freshmen RB's at Wisconsin?  apparently there was two guys 1 knife and a heated exchange resulting in one getting kicked off the team and the other suspended?

will this have any affect on the team this week?

or since its freshmen they were not going to play a big part?

I did this for another thread but from 1970-2019 Penn State is 5-3 against Wisconsin at home which is 0.625 and only 4-5 in Madison which is 0.444 for a difference of 0.181 or a little under two games out of ten.  That isn't nothing.

I am not the Shell Answer Man, and I have not invested deeply into each team's strengths and weaknesses, but that said, Wisconsin seemed quite a bit off last season, and Penn St. came back in the end. Therefore, I think Penn St. wins at Mad Town.

We don't know the story. Probably something stupid.

No.

Correct. Not even close to being in the depth.

thats usually the case that guys do stupid things and the guys are usually not a factor in the game plans.
my guess it has something to do with a woman (next to money women tend to be the causes of most conflicts)

I'm not guessing. There is more to the story and it will come out eventually.

What I do know regarding the kid who was dismissed..

He had issues in high school and he was on a 1 strike and done plan at UW. PC gave him a chance. PC showed him the door.

Now that's a kick in the nuts. Marching on the door, again, and another QB miscue.

This loss is on Mertz's shoulders. I hope they don't waste a championship defense.

Got to get it right next week.

Some interesting chatter re: Mertz out there.  Quite speculative regarding anxiety.  People reading into coded words during broadcast.  I'll admit didn't have sound on that game.   Rough afternoon nevertheless for him.

I've not seen this speculation.

In the secondary, Scott Nelson has a lot to improve on. The two big plays PSU got were on him, not being able to recover from biting on fakes.

Absolutely heroic defense by Penn State, who somehow held on, while their offense was completely ineffective, for a good portion of the game. Those guys all deserve medals, it was inspiring watching the Nittany Lion D, and it put me in a great mood, all day. Wisconsin’s D also played great, but weren’t put in such an impossible position (on the road, as an underdog to a good team with zero offensive help). Both teams look like they will be a tough out, down the road.

Head scratcher.  Badgers on offense for 40+ minutes is typical Wisconsin football and usually results in a comfortable win.

Still too much trying to run inside on a strong D-line.  There was plenty of offensive play calling that was, offensive.  I definitely cannot complain about the defense, although the prevent defense at the end of the game always makes me nervous.

I'll take the win, but the real reason PSU survived Camp Randall was a few key mistakes by the Badgers.
