Posting very early, because my cat woke me up. Gonna be a hot one today in Columbus and Champaign, getting above 90. Not exactly chili weather, though I do have some beans on the menu. My family hates beans, and I love them, and I used to bemoan that fact. But now I realize no one will try to eat my leftovers.
Schedule
1:20 pm, FOX, Nebraska at Illinois
2 pm, CBSSN, UCONN at Fresno St.
3:30, ESPN, Hawaii at UCLA
9:30, FloFootball, UTEP at New Mexico St
10 pm, CBSSN, Southern Utah at San Jose State
-
Damn cat.
A round of golf at PGA then……
COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!!!
So cool. 😊😊👍👍
-
Good morning board. There's football today, I'm so happy.
I remember hating on that whiny fat Belima at Wisconsin, and then laughing at that cocky S.O.B. thinking he he could make Arkansas competitive in the SEC. So, I'm really hoping Frost can spoil his opener.

On the one hand, I know this is about chili. On the other, the idea of you being like “ ha, this woman in these children won’t eat my beans,” and you just crushing leftover beans it’s pretty hilarious.

Trust me, once you are surrounded by children, having a good meal ready on hand that they won't swipe is a priority.

I awoke around 5:25, not sure why, no cat. Made coffee, the wife will rise around 9 and I'll take her coffee and then later we go to the market.
The weather here today should be pretty good, pred high 86°F and slight chance of rain. We often get a brief shower around 5 PM. When I'm at the pool not swimming, I can watch those cumulus clouds build up in real time, it's a sight. I'll probably watch the Nebbie-Ill game at 1:20, it's CFB of course. I know next to nothing about either team. Do they have full attendance? Or is that an issue?
I understand Game Day is here today. I just discovered the field is now called Center Parc Stadium, what once was Olympic Stadium and then Turner Field. They did a decent job I think reshaping the stands for football, but I bet they have far more capacity than they need. This is the Georgia State home field.

Supposedly open at 100% attendance, though whether an Illinois game gets 100% attendance is another matter
-
Got up at 7 am and made the dough for cinnamon rolls and got the chicken wings ready to go into the crock pot and frying the burger to make some simple pizzas. I will be sitting out here in my living room to watch the game and my husband will be hiding out in our room playing Skyrim / Fallout 4 and preparing for his long fall of not seeing me on Saturday game days, lol. He states he is the "football widow" in our household and he's not wrong, ha ha.
Praying for our team's success on the field - and while I would love to see NE win, I mainly want to see improvement - especially on special teams and please God, hang onto the dang ball! If we don't shoot ourselves in the foot (again) we stand a pretty good chance of having a good season ending in a bowl game. GBR!
Good luck to all BIG teams this year, except when playing Nebraska, of course! Let's have a great season uninterrupted by COVID forfeits!

How they were able to convince taxpayers to replace that stadium already I do not understand
Different set of tax payers, Cobb County instead of Fulton/Atlanta. So, they built "Truist" park in arguably the worst traffic center in the metro area with no MARTA. To be fair, they have the second highest MLB attendance now behind the Dodgers who have a larger stadium, so I guess it's "working". We have a bus that runs out that way, I need to try it sometime and see if it works.
There was some mumbling about having south Cobb join MARTA if that would result in rapid rail running out to Cumberland. The DOT built at nearly a billion dollars express lanes adjacent to I-75 out there featuring the longest bridge in the state, over a mile long. It's impressive to see, for me anyway, but strikes me as a weird way to spend money, but they are not allowed to spend on mass transit.
You need a Peach Pass to use the lanes.
-
It doesn't feel real yet. After 2020, nothing does. Hopefully some normalcy sets in, and that this is the catalyst.
Got some chicken brining right now, in prep to hit the deep fryer later on. Probably do some gravy, mashers, corn on the cob and green beans. Kind of a Midwest comfort meal, now that I think about it.
As for today's game... I know very little but I **think** Bert is gonna send Frost to the hottest seat he's been on yet.
He's a good coach, coming off "rehab" with some really good NFL coaches.

Man, the traffic situation there is so hopeless. The outerbelt has like six lanes each way, and it is still completely gridlocked at all times.
How would you even fix that? Ten lanes each way?

Thankfully, my wife is into it. Normally we go boating on Saturdays, but that's at a halt now, until after Thanksgiving. :)

The proposed "solution" is more parallel toll express lanes at a cost of a bazillion dollars and immense construction headaches, and do the same up GA 400.

Didn't INDY do the same thing, like 1st stadium 20 yrs old then replaced

You don't? I mean, I theory some public transit, but it's unfeasible to tear through a place that dense, and not as useful in a place not that compact.
I'm reminded of a book I read about the building of NY. The guy who kinda ran things believed in the idea of cars (as nice tools for a pleasant drive, not really daily transit, because he was insane). And he just figured if you keep building roads, eventually you solve the issue.
Instead, people just got more cars and choked them out again and again.
-

About that, yes
-
I have to admit, the transportation planners in early Chicago got it about as right as they could.
-

It's a fun young team who is winning a lot

Yeah, those frequent freeway tollbooths really keep things moving.
-

IIRC, at least in that case nobody liked the Hoosier Dome. Turner Field was fine
-
Yeah, those frequent freeway tollbooths really keep things moving.
There are tolls, but no toll booths anywhere.
-
I think Hooiser Dome lasted 23 years. About as long as Georgia Dome which made it 25 I think. Ballpark at Arlington was abandoned in 26 years.
-
1st weekend of vball. So fun to see 3rd/4th graders awkwardly go out their many for first time. As a coach, stunning what the kids focus on and ask you such odd questions about anything on the sidelines. So much daydreaming.
We have a couple lively servers so won pretty handily today.
-
Rolled out of bed at around 8am and started laundry. Lots of foot traffic at the continental breakfast downstairs. Big Bang Theory episodes airing on the TVs. Got coffee going. Still wearing the Varsity Blues T-Shirt that I wear last night to a high school football game. Tried giving Dad a call, but he’s likely swimming laps at his usual Saturday pool appointment down in Arizona. Going to finish laundry, maybe work a bit on my journal, all before spending the late morning watching the first kickoff of the season. Go Huskers - less than two hours out!

-
Went for a quick 3-mile run this morning, cleaned out and swept the pool and jumped in to cool off.
Now I'm watching Formula 1 practice and qualifying, and looking forward to turning on some college football this afternoon.
We made it, our long national nightmare is over.
-

When these were new, they were widely heralded, and only lasted ~25 years, it's remarkable to me anyway.
Maybe our priorities are weird.
-
Yeah, those frequent freeway tollbooths really keep things moving.
Early Chicago planners had nothing to do with those, but there are no more booths. It's all electronic now (since Covid) and will stay that way.
-
Yeah, the joke no longer works...
Q. How do you spot a Chicago driver?
A. Every 20 miles they stop and throw money out their window.

Woke up around 2 AM to answer nature's call, and then drifted fitfully in and out until about 5 at which point I was fully awake. Of course, the dog chose today to sleep in to 6:30, so I just laid in bed until he woke up.
Took him for a little over a 3 mi walk, got home, had a couple cups of coffee, and watched Gameday.
Right now I'm watching the BMW Championship. Wife and I are leaving at 11 AM to drop off the kids with the grandparents and then going to a wine festival in Dana Point with my SIL. So holding off on football for now, even though Neb/Ill starts in 15 minutes.
I've got that and the Haw/UCLA game set to record, so I'll fire those up after we get home from wine.
Since we're out today, no big cooks planned. Just some grilled pork tenderloin and roasted broccoli planned for dinner.
-
This thread titles makes me want to hit up Wendy's.
-
Yeah, those frequent freeway tollbooths really keep things moving.
I do not know if this is true so I'm not vouching for it but I was told that the reason for that is so that they could have plenty of patronage jobs for each alderman to hand out.
-
Nebraska fans might get a little grouchy if Bert is way ahead of Frost right out of the gate.

ed zachery
course was playing too slow to make kickoff, so quit after 10 holes
I'm ready!

The new Dr Pepper Fansville ad they just ran is current and, I thought, hilarious. They hit on NIL, the transfer portal, etc.
-
I do not know if this is true so I'm not vouching for it but I was told that the reason for that is so that they could have plenty of patronage jobs for each alderman to hand out.
There are no Illinois Toll Roads in the city. Just the Chicago Skyway, which is privately run.
But yeah, patronage jobs from guys at the state level, for sure.

Not that Huard is great, but he isn't Klatt. :)

2021 B1G football is underway and I'm pretty sure this is Adrian Martinez' 23rd season.
-
A punt for the Frosty man
-
Then a punt for the Frosty Malt
-
Nice punt!
-
Nebrask'a punt was terrible. Illinois' was perfect. Tressel is smiling.
-
The game has not started on my Hulu. It is starting right now.
WTF?

Wait til you see that LB dude with the neck pad still playing on Clemson.

WTF?
Hulu can get a little weird - hit the "live" option or go out and navigate to the live tv options
-
Wait til you see that LB dude with the neck pad still playing on Clemson.
But I think Martinez is the first starting QB in a century whose HC is also his immediate predecessor. If you doubt that, name a UNL starting QB between them?
-
I don't disagree. Tommy Armstrong Jr. However was a 24yr starter.
-
WTH was Nebraska doing
-
When punt returners poop the bed......
-
Bert has the D and ST shored up.
Just needs to recruit one of those gigantic O-Lines out of Wisconsin in order to open up some holes for his running game.
-
LoL, first score of the 2021 B1G season (and Bilema era) is a safety.
-
Might have been down. Not sure if that would also lead to safety
-
Nebraska's run D looks tenacious. Hopefully, for them, they can keep up that energy and/or have the depth to keep it up later in the game.
-
I do not know if this is true so I'm not vouching for it but I was told that the reason for that is so that they could have plenty of patronage jobs for each alderman to hand out.
Don't know if it's true, but as Stephen Colbert would say, it's got a lot of truthiness to it.
-
Might have been down. Not sure if that would also lead to safety
Catching it was a brain fart.
Slipping was unfortunate.
Tossing the ball forward was stupid.
.
Incorporating it all into one play is special.
-
Impressive clusterfk
-
Illinois punter is MVP so far
-
O’Neill and his crew are baaaad. That includes the replay guys too. Player’s momentum clearly took him into the end zone. Thus, touchback and no safety. Get ready for more crappy calls.
-
Art Sitkowski in for Peters, promptly sacked
-
Missed XP. Perfect for this game
-
those looked like some sad burgers that guy was being forced to flip on camera on his flattop grill.
-
Adrian Martinez is really struggling throwing the ball.
-
I'm live now. Thanks Max.
-
WOW! Husker defender hits QB causing him to alter the pass for an Int. Instead called Roughing the Passer, followed up with taunting for the same almost sack, making it the best play for Illinois all game.
-
Either Illinois is MUCH better than I expected or we are witnessing the Scott Farewell tour.

Second best now.
Big swing there, potentially 14 points.

Brand new ballgame.

Adrian Martinez is really struggling throwing the ball.
For as long as Martinez has played college ball, he hasn't improved a lick.
Either way, close game in Champaign.
Nebraska really blew their chance at blowing this game wide open. Up 9-2, an INT that would've put the Huskers at midfield is overturned by two fouls gifting Illinois 25 penalty yards from which their sputtering offense is able to find enough life to finish the drive for a TD.
9-9.
-
For as long as Martinez has played college ball, he hasn't improved a lick.
Coaching matters.
-
Was it RTP as he landed too hard in him? He was in contact w the qb at release. I have sound down and cooking w kids.

Yeah, looked to be the whole driving him into the ground stuff.

My God
-
Martinez a big zero
-
Martinez is not good.
-
Frost should have stayed at UCF to win more national titles.
He's way over his head in this league.
-
Wow. So Nebraska "gave" The Noise all 16 points. (I know, I know they still had to go 20 yards after the 30 yard penalty, but just saying.)
Didn't Beliema bring in 9 transfer players. Including both QB's and 4 star D line guy? I'm thought I heard some talking heads saying Illinois upgraded several positions via the transfer portal.
-
Yes, 9 total. 3 are starters, I believe.
I think Illinois "lost" 16 players to the portal, but not sure.
-

How many of those departures were starters? I don't know why I still listen to ESPN talking heads (guess I'm a glutton for annoyance) but they had a blurb at the B1G, how Dark horse Illinois would be better with those 9 players, and OSU would be lucky to be 10-2 this year, but closer to Iowa level.
-
Another Isiah Williams?
Wasn't that Juice Williams' name?
-
Frost should have stayed at UCF to win more national titles.
He's way over his head in this league.
Having FL talent and facing AAC defenses...yeah.
-
Well at least Nebraska didn't give away that touchdown
-
Tidying up my floppy ornamental grasses sounds fun...
-
Frost is gonna be doing some serious emoting in his post game presser.
-
Another Isiah Williams?
Wasn't that Juice Williams' name?
Not related, but yes.
-
Not related, but yes.
I swear Illinois had another kid with that name at some point between them.
-
Welp. This is just an ass kicking now.
-
I swear Illinois had another kid with that name at some point between them.
Maybe all three of them are actually one guy, with an Adrian Martinez length career.
-
Also, Nebraska has:
Fired a coach hired to continue to the Osborne way
Failed with a coach who was supposed to be the stark opposite
Was good with a coach who tired to get back to that way, but he was insane and fired.
Went the opposite of that guy and failed badly.
Hired the favorite son who ran an offense that blended new and old with a relatively good pedigree and may well be lucky not to fire him at year's end.
Guys, is it option time?
-
damn grouchy
You alive out there, FF?

Nice toss from Martinez there
-
That's some really bad play-calling there, Frost. Jeez.
-
Meanwhile, former Wolverine RB Zach Charbonet is running all over Hawaii for UCLA. Couple of TDS already.
-
Guys, is it option time?
I'd have installed it for this season.
Because:
a - your QB is the fastest guy on the field
b - your QB isn't much of a thrower
c - the HC ran the option to perfection in college
If not now, when?
-
Nebraska is back in this thing.
-
One more minute for the Huskers
-

I feel like this is more about Hawaii than anything else.
-
Undefeated Bert
-
Undefeated Bert
I'm happy for him. He's going to do well in Champaign. He's the perfect fit for them.
-
Other observations here...
After UNL got within 8 points, why do you not do an onside kick? Then, why do you wait until there is almost a minute left to start calling your timeouts? Bad management there, in my opinion.
If I'm Trev Alberts, not only am I a jackass, but I'm firing Frost on the plane ride home. I've seen enough here.
-
Ouch.

-
I feel like this is more about Hawaii than anything else.
Probably. But he is one of 3 RBs on UCLA with carries so far, and he has 30% of the carries. But he has over 100 yards, and 3 tds. More Thant other 2 combined- and then some.
-
Uconn at Fresno going as expected.

His performance against the Illini improved by ten points from last year to this year, losing by 8 instead of 18. So that's technically "improvement."

29-9 Mullen
12-21 Frost
11-21 Kelly
.
Sooooo, 3 things.
1 - Frost still has a better record at UNL than Chip Kelly does at UCLA.
2 - Frost would have to go 37-1 in his next 38 games to equal Harbaugh's record at UM. Maybe Michigan fans can chill on that.
3 - No, 29-9 isn't "good enough" at Florida. We need some hardware.

You are onto something. A triple option offense could be installed almost overnight. It is not that difficult to learn. And, while it is not that difficult to defend, there are not many old school coaches left who learned how to defend it.
-
Funny.
Martinez isn't a good QB and hasn't improved. How many attempts does it take to figure that out? Hoping he improves isn't a great strategy.
So if he's still going to take the snap anyway, and their schedule didn't start until October last year, there was a window there. An offseason + 2 full months.
Or they can do what they're doing and lose to Illinois. Again.
-
2 - Frost would have to go 37-1 in his next 38 games to equal Harbaugh's record at UM. Maybe Michigan fans can chill on that.
That's a great point. Harbaugh peed down his leg in 2020 which makes him an easy target, no doubt about that. But it was a weird Covid year.Otherwise he has three 10 win seasons, one 9 win season, and one 8 win season. The comparisons of Harbaugh to Frost are ridiculous.
Harbaugh merely can't win the big game, whereas Frost can hardly win any game.
-

I wasn't trying to be funny or cute. I am trying to agree with you. A triple option can be installed in a week. Every team should already have the triple option play in their playbook. I don't see many teams running it even occasionally. You essentially have 3-plays that derive out of one play that goes left, and 3-plays that derive out of one play that goes right. Nebraska could just hone the option for a week in practice, and they might actually have something. They can add the option pass. Martinez should be a natural with the triple option. If they fall behind and need to pass the ball more frequently, bring in the 2nd team QB.
There are very few old school coaches left with the expertise to defend it, play-after-play. Nebraska week would be a whole new problem for each D-Coordinator.
-
I don't think it's nearly that easy to do and do well.
They had plenty of time to do it and didn't. And their program is what it is.
-
Frost needs to get a big comfort cat.
-

Yeah, I wouldn’t say it’s that easy. In truth, rejiggering an offense on the fly is pretty tricky. Can be done. Need to pull a Kentucky or something like that.

This leads me to imaging what it would be like if Mullen went 10-3/11-2 into eternity, winning some SEC East titles but usually falling to the west champ. The school has never had that, though I suppose if you do that all the time, you’ll fall into a conference title at some point, plus the playoff will be a thing.
I recall Dan was the third choice. Kelly was first and Frost was second? Or am I forgetting someone.

I'm saying that since a QB change doesn't seem to be in the cards, adjust your offense to his strengths.

Dan Mullen won 9 games at Miss State with Nick Fitzgerald at QB. Guy couldn't pass at all. So he ran the ball a lot. 3 years later, Trask is a Heisman candidate for his passing. Same HC, passed the ball 35% with a poor passer and threw it 56% of the time with a good one.
Same offense, technically. But you build around your strengths.
.
From an observer's standpoint: what's the difference in UNL's offense vs Illinois yesterday and before the Covid extended break? Reminds me of Auburn with Bo Nix. It's a great offensive system if your main man is great. When he's only good, it breaks down.
-
Maybe Frost is screwed up by his start at UCF. First year, MacKenzie Milton sucked. The running game stunk. 2nd year, Milton is great, the RBs have great ypc averages, and they score score score. They progressed!
.
But as ppl have said here, Martinez had played at UNL for 18 years and has shown NO improvement.
-
If I'm Trev Alberts, not only am I a jackass, but I'm firing Frost on the plane ride home. I've seen enough here.
I came here to post pretty much exactly this. At this point the chance that Frost is going to show anything the rest of this year to justify keeping him is vanishingly small.
-
Kinda like what we have in Madison now. Can't get over the hump/evil empire.
Ohio State's run over roughly the last decade is literally one of the best in the history of cfb. You can’t get too worried about things like that.

Someone has to recruit with them. This just came out a couple of days ago, Mich and Penn St. are not very close to OSU.

Last year they got boat raced by Illinois at home. This year it was a one score loss on the road.
I don't think you can fire a guy after one game, when it was a tremendous improvement over their previous performance in that particular series.
-
I don't know what to make of Nebraska. The results have been bad, but Frost was the first coach they hired in a while who actually had other options. They might want to look at other things in the program, like why do they seem to go through so many guys. They need playmakers on the edge, yet Wandale Robinson left, Tyjon Lindsey left, J.D. Spielman left - why?

Last years performance against Illinois was completely unacceptable for any Nebraska fan but upsets happen. Losing AGAIN to Illinois is borderline unforgivable.
The fact that the loss was closer is completely irrelevant. Nebraska obviously wants to be a program that only loses to crappy teams like Illinois once in a great while as a fluke.
-
Martinez hasn't shown he can be a good QB - unfortunately Frost is loyal and hitched his wagon to Adrian when he recruiting Martinez. This ran off other recruits and the other guys on the roster. The Frosh behind Martinez aren't going to be better THIS season.
Same with canning Frost, this will not make anything better this season.
Gonna have to ride it out and try to find other/better options for next season
dumping Frost or Martinez tomorrow does nothing positive for the program

Apparently a fake school from Ohio convinced ESPN to televise their game against IMG today

Yeah, I was watching and it was 21-0 in the 1st quarter. The OH team's guard's helmet came off and had to sit out a play, but I don't think they had a backup or someone ready to run in, so they had to burn a timeout.
.
Apparently a 5-min google search would have exposed the school. Good job, ESPN.

I saw this on Twitter today. I'm a casual fan of central Ohio high school football, and I've never heard of them. Apparently they aren't technically part of Ohio high school football.
-
And again, about a radical change to the offense, it makes sense because your defense isn't good. Your team isn't very good overall, right? If you're going to be behind more than you're ahead and your QB's rating is going to be like 115.0, passing the ball is just going to get your defense out there more.
I get it, switching to the old-timey Osborne option offense would be radical, but you're Scott Frost. Everyone runs the shotgun read-option. You can't come up with some hybrid? Or a Nevada-type of pistol kind of thing....something.
.
Stop forcing your soft-tossing pitcher to throw fastballs.

Aside from someone at ESPN needing to get fired, IMG played this team last year, too.
Why is the best football school in the country doing that???

Well, it is IMG - it's not so much a high school and more a venture capitalist subversion of the system. I doubt they care, as long as they are on ESPN

I'm not sure why someone would get fired. It's kinda dumb and looks bad in a one-day story kind of way. But it's a channel that used to show all manor of things. The best recruited football school in the country wasting its time is filler like anything else.

My understanding is that ESPN puts together the high school games they air. It's not like they just sift through the normal Friday night lights, and pick out the best games. I don't think a team from Ohio is traveling down to play a team from Florida without ESPN footing part of the bill, right?
I mean the team just played a team from near Pittsburgh 2 days ago

Yeah, let's hang onto the most incompetent employees we have. Good plan.

I didn't watch the game but on Twitter people talked about the announcers basically saying they got duped.

They use a booking service. And I read somewhere the schools make like $1,000 a game. I assume most of the big schools make the trips because they're big schools with crazy booster clubs that foot bills. And let's face it, if a school wants to play two games in three days, it's probably not doing much that makes sense.
And lets face it, if that team IMG body bagged got body bagged with a couple four-stars, it would mostly be shrugged off, even if it was a fly by night fake school.
-
Yeah, let's hang onto the most incompetent employees we have. Good plan.
Do you think they have an important person whose job is "screen the HS games to make sure the booking service got it right"?
Now, they should certianly discontinue working with that organization, but that's probably about it.

If you are Penn State or Michigan I think this is a chicken and egg problem:
- Doing better on the field will help you do better at getting high-end recruits off the field but
- Doing better at getting high-end recruits off the field will help you do better on the field.
The thing is that this can snowball VERY quickly. If Penn State or Michigan overperforms on the field for a year or two that is likely to dramatically improve their recruiting off the field and then they'll have a more comparable level of talent and viola, within a few VERY short years they are equal to or better than Ohio State.
These things can and do change and they can change very quickly.

Clemson has obvious geographical advantages, but their flip happened insanely quickly

I think Dabo is a good coach, not Urban good, but at least suburban good. They over achieved for a few years and then recruiting kicked in.
I'm kind of amazed that there really are "superb coaches", a scant few, who make a difference. I would have guessed most college HCs are "good", but not great, and the great ones maybe win one extra game a year they wouldn't have otherwise. The gap seems to be wider than that.
Spurrier was a great gameday coach and schemer, but he didn't focus on recruiting as much. At Florida that was sufficient, but not at USCe.
It's also interesting how a guy can be great at say Boise and move to a P5 and suddenly not be all that.

Particularly if you are talking regular season only, it may only be a one game difference. That doesn't sound like much, but realistically it is HUGE. Look at Michigan, for an example (ignoring 2020 because it was a goofy year):
In 2019 they went 9-3 with losses to Wisconsin, Penn State, and Ohio State. Heading into the tOSU game they were #10 at 9-2. With the loss they dropped to #17 at 9-3. Wisconsin and Penn State (both 10-2) were #10 and #12. Had they won any of the three games that they lost, that would have been a better win than anything that either UW or PSU had and put them easily in the top-10.
In 2018 they went 10-2 with losses to Notre Dame and Ohio State. Heading into the tOSU game they were #4 at 10-1. With the loss they dropped to #8 at 10-2. Notre Dame was #3 at 12-0 and Ohio State was #6 at 11-1. Had they won either of those games they'd have been a likely CFP participant:
- With a win over ND they'd have knocked ND out and finished 11-1 with their only loss being to tOSU.
- With a win over tOSU they'd have gone to the B1GCG at 11-1.
In 2017 they went 8-4 with losses to MSU, PSU, UW, and tOSU. Heading into the tOSU game they were just barely unranked at 8-3. With a win in any one of those games they'd have finished a respectable 9-3 with all three losses being to teams that finished ranked:
- tOSU was #5 heading into bowls
- Wisconsin was #6 heading into bowls
- Penn State was #9 heading into bowls
- Michigan State was #18 heading into bowls.
In 2016 they went 10-2 with losses to Iowa and Ohio State. Heading into the tOSU game they were #3 at 10-1. With the loss they dropped to #5 at 10-2. A win over either Iowa or tOSU would have put them in the B1GCG and gotten them a CFP berth with a win there.
In 2015 they went 9-3 with losses to Utah, MSU, and tOSU. Heading into the tOSU game they were #12 at 9-2. With the loss they dropped to #19 at 9-3. A win in any of those three games likely puts them in the top-10 heading into bowls.
Winning one extra game per year over the five years from 2015-2019 would likely have given Michigan a couple of B1GCG appearances and probably a CFP appearance as well. One game per year may not sound like much but it makes a big difference.
-
Yes, for an upper level team, winning one more game a year can be huge, reg season.
There is almost a sea change between say 11-1 and 10-2 etc.. a "quantum leap" as it were.
-

Looking at your team and mine:
Georgia is preseason #5. Their scheduled games this year against ranked teams are:
- vs #3 Clemson in Charlotte
- vs #13 Florida in Jacksonville
Ohio State is preseason #4. Their scheduled games this year against ranked teams are:
- vs #11 Oregon at home
- at #17 Indiana
- vs #19 Penn State at home
Upsets can and do happen but realistically if these two teams are as good as their rankings they only have 2-3 regular season games that should even be challenging. So basically it is a 2-3 game schedule with a bunch of fluff (again, assuming that they are as good as their rankings). The WLOCP and tOSU's games against IU and PSU are likely to deicide whether or not the Dawgs and Buckeyes end up in their respective CG's while the OOC games against the highest ranked team in the ACC and the highest ranked team in the PAC will go a long way toward determining which conference's 1-loss team gets the last CFP spot. 12-0 vs 11-1 vs 10-2 are HUGE differences.
-
It's also interesting how a guy can be great at say Boise and move to a P5 and suddenly not be all that.
I came to the conclusion a long time ago that the skill set necessary to be a great "Helmet" Coach and the skill set necessary to be a great G5 or minor-P5 Coach are similar and somewhat overlapping but they are NOT the same.
Nick Saban's challenges simply are NOT the same now as they were when he was at Toledo or when he was at MSU. Thus, some guys are GREAT at Toledo/MSU but once they climb the ladder to an Alabama type job they just aren't cut out for it and they don't do well.
-
@Auburn would be UGA's third toughest game (on paper). They get UK and Mizzou at home, to the extent either has a good year.
Urban did exceptionally well at different schools, Saban really didn't until he hit elite P5 programs. And yes, it seems a great G5 coach often becomes a so-so P5 coach.
