Soing a full (fake) season last year gave me ideas for this year. When we were discussing formats that would be ideal, if logistics weren't an issue, I thought a 128 team double elimination tournament would be fun.
So while (fingers crossed) I don't need to do a full PS3 sim this year, I wanted to do something, aside from just doing the 16 team tournament at the end of the year.
So I figured I'd give this a try.
The format is simple, a 7 week, 6 game regular season running September 4-October 16, consisting entirely of conference (ideally divisional) games. That is followed by a 10 week double elimination tournament running from October 23-January 1. Seeding is determined by random draw within pots based upon divisional strength. Higher seeded team always hosts, until we get to 8, at which point the bowls host. the teams that are eliminated are free to schedule games amongst themselves, or play in bowls.
-
Wow. That's a lot of work.
-
We'll see. I'll do the same format as last year. Try to sim out about 8-10 games per week on the game, and use FPI/SP+ for the rest

could be fun to do a 2 year version in a world cup style.
first season is conference only to become tournament eligible. # eligible/conference is determined on strength of conference rankings using sp+. strength on conference is determined by averaging the individual teams in each conf sp+. the conferences above the average conf strength (all conf averaged together) get 1/3 of total # of conf members, confs under the average would get 1/4, with each getting a min of 1. Independents are considered a conference of their own.
this gives 34 teams, so the bottom 4 teams ranked in sp+ would play a play-in game.
this could be done after the first season, but for example, this is the current ranking:
for season 2, you could use sp+ to determine what pot those 32 are in. just use sp+ and go down the line in ranking, first 8 go in pot 1, next 8 in pot 2, etc.
end up with 8 groups of 4, they play round robin. top 2 from each group go onto knockout rounds, and then single elimination from there. or if we want more games, go to double elimination in knockout rounds. or expand to 64 and double group size and knockout rounds start at 32.

Thought about doing something like that as well

OHIO STATE 33, MARYLAND 16
The Terps dominated the first quarter, outgaining the Buckeyes, and with a +2 turnover differential. Problem was three stalled drives kept the lead just 9-0. From that point on, all Buckeyes. Chris Olave had 118 yards and Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 92, as Ohio State outscored Maryland 33-7 over the final three quarters.

Arkansas 21, Texas A&M 15
Hogs defense completely shut the Aggies down. Two 60+ yard TD plays was the only reason the game was close. Texas A&M managed just 183 yards, and 129 came on their two TD plays.
Kentucky 23, Georgia 19
Stoops' kids stunner the Bulldogs, coming back from a 19-0 deficit after 3 quarters. The Cats had no passing attack, but Chris Rodriguez had over 200 rushing yards and a pair of scores to lead the comeback. Kentucky converted two point conversions following two TDs in the first 5 minutes of the 4th quarter. But they weren't needed.
Miami 48, Pittsburgh 24
D'Eriq King did what he needed to, throwing for a quiet 300 yards, on 24-28 passing. The Canes led 34-0 at the half in a game that wasn't as close as the final score indicated

PENN STATE 30, MICHIGAN 21
This was a game of string momentum shifts. Michigan took advantage early, with a 14-3 lead, thanks to some great play from Cade McNamera. Then Sean Cifford responded, and scored 24 unanswered points for the Nittany Lions, to take a 27-14 advantage. After Michigan scored a touchdown midway through the 4th to make it a one score game at 27-21, Penn State responded with a long drive, and James Franklin elected to take the 31 yard field goal on 4th and 1, with 2:51 left, to put it back to a two score edge, which held.
Auburn 34, LSU 27
Max Johnson threw for over 400 yards, the problem was he waited til falling behind 34-6 to light it up., Johnson threw for over 300 yards in the second half, over 200 yards in the fourth quarter, leading LSU to 21 consecutive points, but too little, too late.

The FPI odds thus far, seem not slanted enough towards the favorites
that might not be a bad thing, early this year at least. i read/heard somewhere that more ap ranked teams have lost in the first 2 weeks than ever before. for whatever reason, whether the crazy season last year, covid hitting teams, nil changes, portal being in full effect, or all of the above, it seems the favorites according to the ap have been wrong. or at least not living up to their billing early on.

NOON games
Miami 29, Virginia Tech 17
In a driving rainstorm Miami was able to score a pair of first quarter touchdowns before the field deteriorated to near unplayable conditions in the second half. It was 20-10 Canes at the half, and that more or less held
PENN STATE 38, INDIANA 21
Penn State stunned the home Hoosier crowd in running out to a 31-0 halftime lead, with Sean Clifford accounting for all 4 touchdowns, 2 with his feet and 2 with his arm. Granted one of those was of those went about 2 yards in the air and Noah Cain did the rest with his legs. Cain finished with over 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving on the day.
MICHIGAN STATE 23, MICHIGAN 20
JIm Harbaugh trusted his offense and they rewarded him by picking up a 4th and 2, up 20-16, with about 4 and a half minutes left, rather than attempting a 44 yard field goal. Maybe it was less his faith in his offense than his lack of faith in his kicker. Because shortly after he did send out his field goal team on 4th and 7, and the 33 yard field goal missed wide left. Payton Thorne responded by going 5-6 and marching the Spartans right down the field for a go ahead touchdown. The big play was a broken coverage that allowed Jalen Nailor to catch a 33 yard pass. He actually had to lay out for a slight overthrow, otherwise he would have scored on the play. Michigan got the ball across midfield, but the 48 yard hail mary failed,

Night games
Georgia 34, South Carolina 20
Dogs nearly blew their second consecutive big second half lead. Last week they blew a 19-0 lead in a loss to Kentucky. This week a 27-0 3rd quarter lead became 27-20 midway through the 4th. J.T. Daniels and the offense had the answer this time, with an 11 play, 75 yard touchdown drive to put it away.
Pittsburgh 33, North Carolina 23
Kenny Pickett had a big day, throwing for 343 yards and two scores against a Tar Heel defense that did it's best bend but don't break, holding the Panthers to field goals on 4 of 5 red zone trips, but the offense couldn't generate any rushing attack, finishing with just 17 rushing yards.
Arizona State 41, Utah 31
The Sun Devils used the big play to rakc up 41 points, with 4 of their 6 touchdowns coming on plays of over 40 yards. They finished the evening with 512 yards of offense. The Utes had 468 of their own, but they just had no answers for Jaden Daniels
Texas 26, Iowa State 24
Bijan Robinson vs. Breece Hall did not disappoint. Robinson had the bigger start, with 82 yards in the first half, to just 27 for Hall. But Hall came back in the second half, and brought the Cyclones back with him, from a 20-7 halftime deficit to a 21-20 4th quarter lead. The Longhorns scored early in the 4th, but missed the 2 point conversion. The big swing was facing 4th and 4 from the Texas 22 with just over 6 minutes left, and lined up to go for it, Iowa State took a false start penalty, and then elected to kick the field goal. They never got back in field goal range. Hall did finish with 163 yards and 2 touchdowns, to 148 for Robinson.

West Virginia 44, Texas 41 (2OT)
The Mountaineers never led during regulation, and only tied the game at 35-35 on their final drive. Both offenses moved the ball up and down the field in the first half, but Texas led just 14-10 due to 5 combined turnovers, even though they also combined for over 600 yards of offense.
Notre Dame 41, Liberty 23
Malik Willis gave Liberty a shot in the first half, and even into the third quarter, as the Irish led just 20-16 midway through the third. From that point Jack Coan took over, throwing for over 200 yards in the 4th quarter as Notre Dame pulled away
TCU 48, Oklahoma State 31
Arkansas 35, Mississippi State 24
The bulldogs put a scare in the Hogs early, leading 10-0 after 1, and 17-7 at the half. But Arkansas hit on two 60+ yard plays on their first two drives of the second half, and ran away with a 28-7 edge after halftime

PENN STATE 36, OHIO STATE 35
After a slow start, CJ Stroud came on early in the second half, leading Ohio State back from a 23-7 deficit midway through the 2nd. He got knocked out of the game though, and Kyle McCord went 4-6 on a drive to give Ohio State their first lead of the game, at 35-30. But the Buckeye defense couldn't hold it, and Sean Clifford led the Nittany Lion back, picking up 32 yards with his feet on two long runs. The 2 point conversion failed, but with just 44 seconds left, the Buckeyes couldn't get into field goal range anyway.
Iowa State 37, Texas Tech 24
A pair of failed 4th down conversions in the 4th quarter, turned into 10 Cyclone points, turned this game in favor of Iowa State. There was a concerning lack of offense from Iowa State against a bad Texas Tech defense. The Red Raiders outgained Iowa State by over 180 yards, but were -3 in turnovers, and had the two aforementioned failed 4th down.
Clemson 38, Florida State 11
The Seminole defense held Clemson's offense totally in check for about 54 minutes, and then completely collapsed over the final 6, with the help of the special teams and the offense. McKenzie Milton scored on a 3 yard keeper with 6:11 to go, and then completed the two point conversion, to get within 14-11. Clemson housed the subsequent kick return (21-11); then forced a three and out, and turned the short field into a 49 yard field goal (24-11); forced a turnover on downs, and scored a touchdown two plays later (31-11); and then finished the game with a pick six.

OHIO STATE 38, MICHIGAN 26
Michigan fans had seen this before, as the Buckeyes sprinted out to a 28-7 2nd quarter lead, even with C.J. Stroud getting knocked out of the game. Cade McNamera had a louse game, but Hassan Haskins really picked it up late in the quarter, as Michigan battled back to 31-26. Kyle McCord put together the game winning drive, scoring the final touchdown with 4:12 to play, to put another dagger in the heart of Michigan fans
Georgia 23, Florida 20 (OT)
A lot of questioning of the head coaches will happen after this one, but at least Kirby Smart has a win to lean on. The Gators squandered a 20-10 lead in the 4th quarter. Down 20-17 with just under a minute to go, from the 2 yard line, Smart took the tying field goal. Then, even though fans hate sitting on the ball, Dan Mullins’ decision to pass twice (both incomplete) from his own 25, and then run to force Georgia to burn their final timeout, didn’t pan out, particularly after a bad punt. Stetson Bennett had a good day in terms of passing yards (284), even though he barely completed 50% of his attempts, but he found Brock Bowers at the Florida 35. After running up to spike the ball with 9 seconds left, Kirby then tried to get closer, rather than rely on the 52 yard field goal. While Bennett completed the pass down to the 18, in the middle of the field, the clock ran out. Georgia had to settle for a field goal with their opening possession, but after Emory Jones converted a first down on the Gators’ first possession, he threw a game ending pick on his next pass.
Texas d. Texas Tech
LSU 26, Arkansas 20
K.J. Jefferson had a nightmare of a day, and the fact that this was a one possession game late, was only due to the Razorbacks being +4 in turnover differential, and LSU had three red zone possessions end in field goals (one of which was missed), and a missed PAT.
WISCONSIN d. MINNESOTA
PENN STATE 42, MICHIGAN STATE 14
In a driving rainstorm, Payton Thorne threw a pick on the first play of the game, and it was a harbinger of things to come. Thorne threw two more picks, and wound up with just 111 passing yards on the day. The turnovers just turned a loss into a blowout, because the Spartans had no answer for Sean Clifford and Noah Cain.
- South Florida d. Central Florida
- Army d. Notre Dame
NORTHWESTERN 24, ILLINOIS 7
Illinois has been one of the surprise stories of this alternate season. But against their in state rivals, their offense was beyond inept. They finished with 126 yards, and were down 24-0 before scoring their first points. They’ve still set themselves up well for the elimination portion of this season
Louisville 24, Clemson 17
Clemson thought they had solved their offensive problems when they jumped out to a 10-0 lead after their first two possessions. That was not the case, as the Cardinals battled back, tied it at 17 late in the third and took the lead with just around 13 minutes left. The Tigers had 3 possessions to try and tie it. To no avail.

Wednesday result
- South Carolina 33, Coastal Carolina 30
The Chanticleers strategy of bend but don't break on defense to the extreme, seemed to work, as the Gamecocks scored 19 points in the first half, off one touchdown and 4 field goals, despite nearly 400 yards of offense, with 266 passing yards from Zeb Noland. But South Carolina dominated TOP, and led 19-7 at halftime. Coastal Carolina turned momentum in the second half, and picked off Noland for the first turnover of the game, with 7:52 to play, down 33-30. The Chanticleers got into fringe field goal range, but the 51 yarder was not even close. It looked like Shane Beamer's decision to punt on 4th and 2 from the Coastal 41 with 1:41 left would be questioned, after the punt went out of bounds at the 21, and Coastal Carolina got out to the 48 yard line in 3 plays. The Chanticleers took a deep shot, which was intercepted, to end the game though.

Gavin Hardison passed the ball well enough to never let Auburn totally exhale, but the Miners had no response for the Auburn run game. On the first play of the game, Bo Nix took the option keeper 75 yards for a touchdown. A holding call brought it back, but it largely just delayed the inevitable. Jarquez Hunter and Tank Bigsby both went over 150 yards, and Auburn went for 388 rushing yards as a team.
SMU grinded out a 17-3 lead going into the 4th quarter, with Army down to their third string quarterback. Jemel Jones was 3-8 for 38 yards and a pick. But one of those 3 completions was a 13 yarder on 4th and 12 to extend the Black Knights’ first touchdown drive. After forcing a 3 and out, Army had a second touchdown drive to miraculously tie the game. Their final two drives covered 150 yards, and took over 11 minutes of game time. The decision not to go for the win would come back to bite them. After trading missed field goals in the first overtime, Army did kick a field goal in the second. Tanner Mordecai hit Reggie Roberson Jr. for a game winning touchdown on the second play of the Mustangs’ possession.
- MICHIGAN 34, East Carolina 14
An absolutely disastrous first half turned in a major way for the Wolverines in the second half. The Pirates took a shocking 14-3 lead into the break, thanks to a pair of missed field goals and a Cade McNamera red zone fumble, to go with 56 total passing yards. It didn’t take long for any upset talk to disappear. Michigan marched right down the field for an opening possession touchdown. Then scored a pick six. Forced a four and out, and scored another touchdown. They were up 24-14 less than halfway into the third quarter, and then a sort of sleep walk finish. McNamera throwing for just 126 yards with an interception and a fumble is troubling though.

Oklahoma State fans are used to having to lean heavily on their defense this year, but perhaps never more than today, when the Cowboys failed to score a point in the second half, and a 24-9 halftime lead was perilous. When he needed to, Spencer Sanders made a great throw on 3rd and 6, allowing Oklahoma State to take knees and run out the clock.

What looked, on paper, to perhaps be the best game of the day, was over in a hurry. The Gators led 14-0 after two possessions, and 28-7 at the half. They didn’t find the end zone in the second half, but they did have three red zone possessions, they just happened to result in 3 field goals.

The Falcons’ run game worked early, 188 rushing yards in the first half, but once Wake Forest figured out Air Force had no passing game, even by their standards, it was over. And Air Force had no passing game. They led 14-13 at halftime, but even that final score was a little misleading. Wake Forest scored two touchdowns in the second half, and Air Force’s lone score was also their lone trip across midfield, when one of their lineman scooped up their own fumble, and ran 62 yards with it, into the Deacon red zone

The Bulldogs took a -2 turnover differential, and a 24-9 lead into halftime in front of a stunned Kyle Field. They executed their bend but don’t break defense to perfection. Six of the Aggies’ first seven possessions reached the red zone. The result? Four field goals, one missed field goal, and one turnover on downs. 12 points on six red zone trips. Zach Calzata got it going in the fourth quarter, hitting Isaiah Spiller for a 40 yard screen pass for a touchdown, to cut it to 27-19, and then an 8 yard completion to Ainias Smith with 1:52 left. The two point conversion attempt to a double covered Jalen Wydermyer in the middle of the end zone was knocked to the ground, and Fresno State held on for the upset.

Cincinnati 27, Pittsburgh 13
The Bearcats jumped out on a stunned Heinz Field crowd in a hurry, up 14-0 after running just one offensive play. Desmond Ridder hit Tyler Scott for a 75 yard catch and run touchdown on the first play of the game. After forcing a three and out, Ryan Montgomery took a line drive punt 56 yards for another score. As field conditions rapidly deteriorated in a driving rain that 14 point lead was never threatened. Kenny Pickett never got it going, and the Panthers were never within single digits.
MINNESOTA 27, MICHIGAN STATE 24
Minnesota marched up and down the field on the Spartans in the first half, and largely held the explosive Michigan State offense in check. But a missed chip shot field goal, and a Tanner Morgan fumble returned 84 yards by Drew Jordan for a touchdown left the score tied 14-14 midway through the second quarter, despite Minnesota outgaining Michigan State 283-112. The Gophers responded with a touchdown drive, and then after Mel Tucker decided to try and go for points, rather than running the clock out, got the ball back. Tanner Morgan hit Chris Autman-Bell down to the 35, and Matthew Trickett hit a 52 yard field goal on the last play of the game. Kenny Walker got the Spartans back to within 3 with an 18 yard touchdown run with 5:45 left, but the Gophers were able to run out the rest of the clock. Tanner Morgan finished with 233 passing yards and 106 rushing yards on the day.
IOWA 31, North Carolina 21
With just over a minute left in the first half the teams had combined for 4 turnovers, but just one score. The Tar Heels clung to a 7-0 lead, and Spencer Petras was 3-13 passing the ball. A broken coverage allowed Tyrone Tracy Jr. to get behind the defense for a 32 yard tying score just before the break. In the third quarter the game opened up with scores on the first five possessions of the second half, and the Hawkeyes taking a 24-21 lead. A failed 4th and short attempt allowed Iowa to take over and drive 58 yards for the insurance score.

Georgia 42, PURDUE 10
Nothing to say here. It was 28-3 at halftime, and 42-3 after three. At least Purdue found a garbage time touchdown late.
Texas 31, San Diego State 24
The Aztecs dominated the first half, and took a 24-7 lead into the break. Bijan Robinson had just about enough of that, leading the Longhorns back with 188 yards and 2 touchdowns in the second half, including the game winning 2 yard plunge with 8 seconds left.
Oklahoma 34, Louisville 16
We saw the growth of Caleb Williams, and we also saw him be a freshman that tried to do too much. In the first quarter he threw an ill advised interception, and the Sooners were shut out in the quarter. Then he got patient, took what the defense gave him, and was 28-36 for 283 yards in taking control of the game. But up 34-16 with 8:17 left in the game, flushed from the pocket, rather than throwing the ball away, and kicking an easy field goal, he threw the ball across his body, it was picked off, and Marvin Mims just barely prevented a pick six by a shoestring.

Baylor, who was the highest individual rusher in the game with 168 yards, ran for 229. Everett Hayes missed a PAT following Oregon State’s first drive, but made up for it with a 47 yarder with 3:18 left to force Baylor to score a touchdown to win, which the Bears couldn’t muster. - Baylor 27, Louisiana 17 (Louisiana eliminated)
With 7:32 to play, trailing 17-13, and facing 4th and 3 from the Cajun 29, Baylor elected to go for the first down, rather than kick a field goal to cut the deficit to 1. They failed to convert, marking their third consecutive possession to enter Louisiana territory, but totaling zero points. The Bear defense stood tall, forced a three and out, and the Baylor offense made the fourth time the charm, with Abram Smith breaking free for a 45 yard go ahead touchdown. After forcing a turnover on downs, Gerry Bohannon had a 32 yard keeper run of his own with 1:17 left to seal it.

Oklahoma 38, IOWA 14
Both offenses struggled in the first half, with Oklahoma outgaining Iowa, but the Hawkeyes scoring on a 46 yard pass to Charlie Jones, to stay within 10-7. Marvin Mims fumbled a punt with just under 3 minutes to go at the half, at his own 26, but Oklahoma was able to fall on the ball. Instead of taking over deep in Sooner territory, Iowa allowed Oklahoma to drive 74 yards to take a 17-7 halftime lead. Caleb Williams led Oklahoma right down the field again to open the second half, and instead of taking the lead, the Hawkeyes found themselves down 24-7 without taking a meaningful offensive snap
OHIO STATE 34, West Virginia 17
West Virginia was able to hold the Buckeye passing game in check, as C.J. Stroud completed 71% of his passes, but for just 234 yards. TreVeyon Henderson took care of business on the ground, with 156 yards, and yet the Buckeyes led just 20-10 midway through the third, when Stroud hit Chris Olave for a beautiful back corner of the end zone touchdown pass from 37 yards out...until it was overturned on replay. Ohio State then turned the ball over on downs, and on the very first play from scrimmage Garrett Greene, who was in for the injured Jarret Doege, hit Isaiah Esdale for a quick slant and run down to the Ohio State 2. The Mountaineers punched it in, and suddenly the game was 20-17. The Buckeyes responded with a touchdown drive of their own, and Teradja Mitchell picked off Greene to set up a game sealing touchdown.
San Diego State 27, Pittsburgh 20 (Pittsburgh eliminated)
After each team had three possessions, Pitt had one first down, and San Diego State had three red zone trips. The score? 9-0. A 57 yard Kenny Pickett to Shocky Jacques-Lewis pass jump started the Pitt offense, and the Panthers took a 10-9 lead into the half. The Aztecs punched back, led by 135 rushing yards from Greg Bell, but it was quarterback Jordan Brookshire punched in two rushing touchdowns, including the go ahead touchdown with 5:38 left, but did hit the aforementioned Bell for the two point conversion, to extend the lead to 7. The Panthers got to the San Diego State 43, but Pickett seemingly didn’t see safety Trenton Thompson, and threw a game ending interception right to him.
Houston 34, Coastal Carolina 20 (Coastal Carolina eliminated)
I’m not sure Houston hired Dana Holgorson for his defensive prowess, but the Cougars used that defense to send home last year’s mid-major darling, leading 27-3 at the half, with a defensive touchdown, and 34-13 until the Chanticleers tacked on a garbage time touchdown. Grayson McCall was held to just 172 passing yards, and 2 interceptions.

This had strong “last team with the ball wins” vibes, tied at 27 after three quarters. The Wake Forest offense kept going, and the Appalachian State offense did not, as the Deacons won the 4th quarter 17-0, fueled by the Mountaineer coaching staff being too worried about punting the ball back, but going 1-3 on 4th downs.

WISCONSIN 27, Cincinnati 21
Desmond Ridder certainly earned the respect of the Wisconsin defense, but it simply wasn’t enough, even when a blown coverage with 23 seconds left gave the Bearcats a 67 yard touchdown, and a shot at an onside kick. Cincinnati finished the game with 8 rushing yards as a team, and it was only 247 yards from Ridder that kept this close. Chez Mellusi finished with 138 yards, but 107 of those were in the second half. At 24-14 with 10:20 left, Cincinnati missed a chip shot field goal that would have cut it to a one score game. A blown opportunity that this team could not afford against Bucky’s defense
Fresno State 39, Alabama 33
Fresno State had a plan and it worked. They let Alabama move the ball absolutely at will between the twenties, and they did. The Crimson Tide had over 600 yards of offense, and didn’t punt the ball once. But they also only scored 3 touchdowns on 10 possessions. They had 4 field goals, one interception, and two turnovers on downs. For the Fresno State offense it was the Ronnie Rivers show. Rivers wound up with 128 rushing yards, and 79 receiving yards on 6 receptions. Alabama scored the tying touchdown, pending the extra point, with 2:53 left, but on review, Brian Robinson Jr. stepped out at the 3, bringing up 4th and 2, and the Bulldog defense held. The game ended with Bryce Young trying to scramble for a first down on 4th and 4 from the 46, and being tackled 2 yards short.

SMU’s only second half touchdown came after a kickoff return down to the Poke 2

MICHIGAN 38, Georgia 17
You want to know how to beat Georgia’s defense? J.T. Daniels’ arm, and….checks notes, Cade McNamera’s...legs? McNamera had a 23 yard touchdown run, and a 47 yard run to set up another, and Daniels threw three interceptions, two inside his own 40. McNamera only threw for 116 yards, but Haskins had 82 rushing yards, to go with 56 from Blake Corum. While Georgia outgained Michigan by 97 yards, the -3 turnover differential was too much to overcome.
Ole Miss 51, Nevada 24
Ole Miss scored on their first two “drives” needing a total of only 7 offensive plays to do so, and Nevada was never in it. It was 38-10 at halftime, and Matt Corral didn’t play a snap of the fourth quarter, while throwing for over 400 yards.

Notre Dame 24, Iowa State 21
The Irish were -4 in turnovers, including -2 in the 4th quarter, which they entered down 21-17, and still found a way to win. Kyren Williams ran for 189 yards, but the most important of those were the 3rd and 6 and 3rd and 2 pickups on the game clinching drive, after Matt Campbell opted to punt the ball back to Notre Dame with 4 and a half minutes left, rather than go for 4th and 8. The Cyclones never did get the ball back.
MINNESOTA 25, OHIO STATE 14
The Ohio State offense was having issues all day long, particularly with dropped balls. C.J. Stroud still threw for 293 yards, but had six drops from his receivers, including one in the end zone with 4 seconds left in the first half, that would have sent the Buckeyes into the break up 21-6. Instead they subsequently missed the field goal, and the lead remained 14-6, and was still 14-12 going into the fourth. Matthew Trickett being 4 for 4 on field goals, with a long of 51 held Minnesota in the game. The Gophers took their first lead on a 38 yard screen pass to MarKeise Irving, but the two point conversion failed. After being let down by his receivers all day, Stroud made his first big mistake, throwing a pass behind Garrett Wilson, that Terrell Smith picked off, and returned to the Buckeye 23. Five plays later the Gophers punched it in on the keeper from Tanner Morgan, who finished with 166 passing yards. Minnesota’s Cinderella run continued with their third consecutive road victory in the winner’s bracket, after beating Michigan State and Arkansas

MICHIGAN STATE 33, NC State 16 (NC State eliminated)
Pauyton Thorne was bad, their backup kicker missed 2 PATs and was 0-2 on field goals, but the run game and run defense was so good, Michigan State was never threatened. Thorne only threw for 91 yards, but the Spartans held the Wolfpack to negative rushing yards, and also converted over 60% of their third down conversions. Thanks to 2 first quarter turnovers from safety Xavier Henderson, including a scoop and score, Michigan State led 20-0 after the first, and 33-9 before NC State scored a garbage time touchdown. Kenneth Walker III didn’t have his biggest game, with 109 yards, but Elijah Collins had 89 yards, Peyton Thorne had 47, and Connor Heyward had 46.
WISCONSIN 28, Fresno State 10
A week after giving Alabama’s defense all sorts of problems, the Bulldogs were no issue for Bucky on Saturday. You could tell early on that Fresno State knew points would be hard to come by, when they answered Wisconsin’s game opening touchdown drive with their own drive inside the 10, and elected to go for it on 4th and goal from the 4, rather than kick the field goal. They failed, and it set the tone. Ronnie Rivers went for over 200 scrimmage yards last week, but was held to 54 yards rushing on 9 attempts, and just one catch for 17 yards. Graham Mertz completed just 11 of 23 passes, but had a couple of big hitters, and threw just one pick.

Kentucky 27, Baylor 20 (Baylor eliminated)
I never thought I’d live in a world where Kentucky was thankful to be playing Baylor in football rather than basketball, but here we are. Kentucky stormed out to a 17-0 lead, early in the 3rd quarter, before Baylor scored 20 unanswered in roughly 12 minutes of gametime, to seize control. Will Levis, who was 26-30, but for only 136 yards exploded for 151 passing yards in the final 11 minutes, in bringing Kentucky back for the win. In the end, he was 36-45 for 287 yards and 2 touchdowns with no picks.

North Carolina was underdogs going in, but if Sam Howell was going to get outplayed by Zach Calzata? Forget about it. Calzata was 17-22 for 186 yards and a touchdown, plus 33 yards and a touchdown on the ground...in the first half.

Houston 23, Oregon 17 (Oregon eliminated)
Special teams was the story here. The Cougars made all three field goals they attempted, but it was the failure of the Ducks’ special teams that was the reason for their upset loss. They missed 4 of 5 field goals, although one was a 53 yarder on the final play of the first half. Because of his lack of faith in his kicker, Mario Cristobal decided to go for it on 4th and 6 from the 32 with 9:50 left, down 6, rather than trying to cut it to 3. The attempt failed, and because of it, with 1:16 left Oregon had to go for 4th and goal from the 13, rather than being able to kick a tying field goal. That also failed. In addition to that the Ducks had a fumble on a punt return that Houston turned into a touchdown, and they had a 42 yard punt return called back for a block in the back.

Houston 22, Utah 19 (Utah eliminated)
The Utes will kick themselves for not cashing Houston’s 5 turnovers, into more than one touchdown. Utah led 19-0 going into the 4th, but were +5 in turnovers. It seemed safe, but Utah’s inept offense became problematic once the Cougars stopped turning the ball over. They didn’t go over 100 passing yards until the 6 minute mark of the third, and finished with 116 yards. Once they found themselves behind after three consecutive Houston touchdown drives, they suddenly had to fire up the offense again. They did get 1st and 10 at the Houston 40, but a false start penalty, a three yard gain, and two incompletions left them out of field goal range, and they couldn’t pick up the first down.

MICHIGAN 23, Oklahoma 19
Michigan jumped out to a 14-0 lead, thanks to a pair of first quarter Caleb Williams interceptions. The Sooners scored 19 unanswered, but Cade McNamera answered back to give Michigan the lead. The decisive moment was Harbaugh electing to go for it on 4th and 3 from the 39 with just over 4 minutes left, up 20-19, rather than attempt the long field goal. Moody did kick the go ahead field goal, but from much closer, with just 56 seconds left. Oklahoma had a hail mary shot, but the ball fell incomplete. Williams threw for 396 yards and a pair of scores, but his three interceptions, which led to two Michigan touchdowns, including a pick six from Dax Hill, were too much to overcome. The Sooners defense did shut down Hasaan Haskins, with just 62 yards on under 3 yards per carry.
Tennessee 37, OHIO STATE 34 (OHIO STATE eliminated)
The Buckeyes took the opening kickoff to the house, and Tennessee immediately did the same. That set the stage for a game where stops were rare, although Tennessee recorded the final score with 8:20 on a 5 yard pass from Hendon Hooker to Jacob Warren. The Vol defense finally stepped up, and got their first back to back stops of the game, and only their third and fourth overall. TreVeyon Henderson ran wild with the Buckeye backfield banged up, with 212 receiving yards, but Hooker outdueled C.J. Stroud, throwing for 331 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Alabama 55, San Diego State 17 (San Diego State eliminated)
Crimson Tide fans were having Mountain West PTSD when the Aztecs took a 10-7 lead midway through the first. No worries this time, as Bryce Young absolutely took over from that point on. The big swing was when Alabama got a stop on 4th and 2 from the 32, with 53 seconds left in the half, up 21-10. Brady Hoke elected to kick the field goal rather than go for it. It was wide left, and Bama scored a touchdown three plays later, to take a 28-10 lead, rather than 21-13. Bryce Young had 289 first half passing yards en route to 413 total passing yards.
Clemson 18, WISCONSIN 14
This game was every bit as ugly as the score would suggest. Wisconsin led 14-10 at the half, thanks to a two minute drive capped off with a 16 yard pass to Jake Ferguson. They didn’t score again, but Clemson was able to tally a safety after the Badgers started a drive at their own 4, thanks to a block in the back on a kick return. D.J. Uiagalele only threw for 141 yards, but had no turnovers, and recorded his one passing touchdown with 12:18 left. The two point conversion failed, but it didn’t matter, Wisconsin never again crossed midfield.
PENN STATE 34, Nevada 17 (Nevada eliminated)
Not much to say here other than Clifford, with 268 yards passing and 103 yards rushing wasn’t going to waste a second shot at Nevada.

All I’m going to say is that throwing for 234 yards on over 70% completions is all well and good, but when you have the #1 defense in the country, you can’t throw two pick sixes. Georgia outgained Oregon State 360-121.

Both, yes both, defenses played well, but it was an Ealy touchdown run with 6:18 left to put Ole Miss up two scores that sealed it. Jack Coan was able to drive the Irish back down the field with an answer with 1:54 left, but the Rebels recovered the onside kick, to push Ole Miss into the final four unbeaten teams.

I also think I'm going to do the 6 elimination games next week as bowl games. Then for the quarterfinals, the two undefeated teams join as the top 2 seeds, and host, while the 3-6 and 4-5 games are at bowl sites.

- Mississippi State d. Colorado (Colorado eliminated)
- Oklahoma 47, Oregon State 13 (Oregon State eliminated)
Trevon Bradford had 6 receptions for 166 yards and a touchdown. And the rest of the Baylor offense combined for 107 yards. Oklahoma was up 30-0, gave up a touchdown and fumbled the ensuing kickoff to open the door a bit. But on the second play following the fumble, Tristan Gebbia threw a pick to end any doubt.
Notre Dame 33, Arkansas 30 (2OT) (Arkansas eliminated)
Jack Coan only threw for 198 yards, but it was on 65% completions, with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions, including guiding the Irish two touchdowns on their final two possessions, after Arkansas kicked a field goal with 6:34 left to push the lead to 24-10. K.J. Jefferson ran for 153 yards, but didn’t break the 100 yard passing mark until overtime.
Iowa State 34, Houston 17 (Houston eliminated)
A very frustrating first half for Iowa State, where they outgained the Cougars by over 70 yards, but trailed 17-10, culminating with two Cyclones going for an end of the half hail mary, and coming up with the catch but knocking each other down in the process at the two yard line. They began converting their opportunities in the second half, running for over 200 yards in the half, and outscoring Houston 24-0, finally putting a dent in the Cougar defense which had been carrying them all tournament.

PENN STATE 45, Fresno State 15 (Fresno State eliminated)
Penn State scored on their first four possessions, taking a 24-0 lead, with an efficient 8-10 opening from Sean Clifford, with a pair of touchdown passes to Brenton Strange. The Bulldogs clamped down, scored a response touchdown of their own, got the two point conversion and got the ball back, suddenly down just 24-8. The offense stalled, the field goal was wide left, and Fresno State never really threatened again. Jake Haener had a rough day, and Ronnie Rivers was forced out of the gameplan for the early deficit.
MINNESOTA 31, Alabama 20 (Alabama eliminated)
Not even going to address the game itself, just trying to figure out why Minnesota is so good. Their rating is so much lower than the teams they are beating.

Tennessee 28, MICHIGAN STATE 19 (MICHIGAN STATE eliminated)
Python Thorne struggled aside from one long touchdown pass to Jayden Reed, that went about 5 yards, and then Reed ran 58 yards up the sideline after breaking one tackle. Hendon Hooker was solid, and the Vols rode a balanced rushing attack, to eliminate a Big Ten team for the second consecutive week.
Auburn 21, Kentucky 14 (Kentucky eliminated)
No Bo Nix? No problem. Auburn got enough from T.J. Finley’s legs, accounting for two of the Tigers’ three rushing touchdowns, and Kentucky couldn’t generate much of a passing attack.

4:00 result
Florida 31, WISCONSIN 24 (WISCONSIN eliminated)
Graham Mertz, 24-34 for 298, 2 touchdowns...and 4 interceptions. Wisconsin only punted the ball twice all game, Florida only had 208 total yards of offense, but 5 Wisconsin turnovers, 4 more than Florida, killed them. Down 28-24, facing 4th and 5 at the Florida 11 yard line with 10:22 left, Paul Chryst elected to go for it, rather than cut the lead to 1. Mertz found Jake Ferguson at the 7, Florida swarmed him, the chains came out and he was short by nearly 2 full feet. The Gators responded with their best drive of the game, 76 yards, running over 8 minutes off the clock, and kicking a field goal. They then held Wisconsin from getting even within range of a hail mary.

Night games
Clemson 28, Ole Miss 14
The Tigers’ defense completely bottled up the Ole Miss passing game, limiting Matt Corral to 203 passing yards. Meanwhile, the Clemson running game ran absolutely wild, with Will Shipley recording 138 yards, and 115 from Kobe Pace. Once the Tigers went up 21-7 early in the third, the passing game was almost completely non existent, finishing below 200 yards total. But the Rebels had no response.
Oklahoma State 28, MICHIGAN 27
The story here was big plays, as three of the Cowboys four touchdowns came from their own side of the 50. Spencer Sanders surpasses 200 yards with a touchdown pass with 9:50 left in the second quarter. 138 of those coming on touchdown passes of 75 and 63. Michigan fans are going to kick themselves over two first and goals that resulted in field goals.

Saturday results
PEACH BOWL
Tennessee 46, Mississippi State 20
Will Rogers threw a pick six on Mississippi State’s third play of the game, and the Vols offense was too good to allow their defense to score too.
GATOR BOWL
Florida 33, Iowa State 24
Neither offense could get anything going for a while, Brock Purdy starting the game 1-8 for 12 yards and an interception. But things picked up midway through the third quarter, when the teams exchanged touchdowns to make it 17-14. From that point on, it was all Gators, scoring the final 16 points of the game.
CITRUS BOWL
Auburn 38, MICHIGAN 28
A Michigan-Auburn Citrus Bowl feels like the most real thing about this tournament. J.J. McCarthy accounted for two touchdowns, first on a 7 yard run, which set up a 68 yard pass over the top to a completely open Andrel Anthony to give the Wolverines control at 28-17. The Michigan defense completely melted down in the fourth quarter against the Auburn run game, which they had held in check for three quarters. The Tigers ran for 193 yards over their final four drives, which resulted in three touchdowns, and probably would have gotten at least a field goal on the fourth, except for a David Ojabo third down sack.
COTTON BOWL
Oklahoma 25, Cincinnati 21
Cincinnati gave Caleb Williams whatever he wanted between the twenties, and for a little over three quarters, it worked perfectly, and Cincinnati held a narrow 14-13 lead, even though Williams was already at 338 yards, because the Sooners had kicked five field goals, and missed three of them. Then Desmond Ridder broke his wrist, and the Bearcats had to turn to Evan Prater. Cincinnati caught the Sooners off guard, by letting him throw downfield on his second play, and it went for a 56 yard touchdown. The problem was Prater was awful beyond that, and Oklahoma loaded the box. The clamp down in the red zone strategy also failed, as Oklahoma scored 12 fourth quarter points, and Williams finished with 449 passing yards.
SUN BOWL
Ole Miss 38, Notre Dame 31 (OT)
Jack Coan took a sack on 4th and goal at the 5 with 3:51 left, down 31-24, a nearly unforgivable mistake, but the defense got him another chance, and he dove for the tying touchdown with 29 seconds left. It was overturned on review, but Tyren Williams punched it in a play later. Unfortunately he made two bad throws in overtime, the second of which was a game ending interception, after Ole Miss scored in the top half in two plays. Both losses in tournament play for the Irish came to Lane Kiffin.
HOLIDAY BOWL
PENN STATE 42, MINNESOTA 14
C.J. Stroud couldn’t beat the Gophers, neither could Bryce Young. But Sean Clifford absolutely cooked them. A 48 yard jet sweep to Jahan Dotson on their first possession of the second half ended any minor doubt, to make it 35-0. But Clifford ran for 84 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first half, and threw for 116 and another, while Minnesota mustered just 33 first half passing yards, falling behind 28-0 at the break.
