Title: Games You Plan On Attending This Fall 2021
Post by: CatsbyAZ on June 13, 2021, 11:14:30 AM

Last year was the first season in 15 years that I didn’t make it to a single college football game. To get back on track:

Sept 11: Iowa @ Iowa St – gotten to know a few Iowa fans who’ve invited me to Ames; wondering what the pregame/halftime affairs will do to commemorate the 20th anniversary of September 11

Sept 25: Colorado @ Arizona State – last year’s chance to watch Colorado (@ Arizona) fell through, which is notable, because they’re the last Pac 12 team I haven’t watched in-person

Oct 9: Georgia @ Auburn – not sure how many more years I can keep pulling off an Auburn trip, but here goes

Will probably fit in another Pac 12 game and hopefully a bowl too.

What are your guys' early plans?

Probably catch a Gator home game, or maybe even go to the WLOCP.

Maybe catch a Florida bowl game. Perhaps UW will be in one. That would be great.

Bama @ A&M is most likely.
N @ OU looking dicey now with some family commitments around that weekend.
BIG Ccg good chance
CFP Final a good bet considering it is in Indy this year.

Not sure, might take in a Tech game at some point, tickets are cheap and I can walk to it.

SEC CG?  Went once a few years back.  Figured we'd get blown out instead of losing late like we did.

WLOCP?  Never been, seems like a thing.

South Carolina 9/18 in Athens?  Could be an idea.

Unfortunately, the court system has reopened, and I am so busy I probably won't make it to a game. But, looks to be a very fun fall schedule for you! I expect to read three reports.

All the Gopher home games, plus Sept 18, Minnesota at Colorado. Lots of Gopher fans are heading to the high country for some Colorado kool-aid.

Thinking of lining up a weekend visiting my Indianapolis cousins with an Indiana Hoosiers football game. I anchored my last few visits to Indiana around a Notre Dame game and a Big Ten Championship - Ohio State Vs Wisconsin 2019. They are IU grads and they've wanted to tour me through Bloomington for a while now.

Thinking of November 13 IU Vs Rutgers or November 20 IU Vs Minnesota.

Costco of course puts their TVs up front and center, good marketing.  And I'm astonished how good they are, even the lesser quality ones not of the newest type.  I think mine is a 65" 1K TV and it is amazing really.  I look at the new 80 inchers and imagine it on my wall, maybe not the QLED version or whatever, but some almost as good version.

All true, but for me it's as much or more-- kids' sports games and traveling to tournaments and marching band and whatever else is going on.

I happened to be strolling about when the Texas cheerleaders welcomed the Nebraska cheerleaders to Austin back in the day.

They don't show that on TV.  Holy cow.  Young women are awesome.

As I always highlight, half the marketing there is showing you content that is SO much better than nearly anything you'll ever watch. It's basically uncompressed and optimized to look amazing.

Anything you watch broadcast/cable/satellite/IPTV/streaming will be EXTREMELY compressed compared to that and won't look anywhere near as good.

If you watch a bunch of 4K HDR movies that you've purchased on physical media, they should look outstanding. But literally everything else will be too compressed to make use of the technology in these TVs.
Title: Re: Games You Plan On Attending This Fall 2021
Post by: Cincydawg on June 18, 2021, 03:03:38 PM
Yeah, I know it's about the source fidelity.  I put up some 4K you tube things, and even on my TV they look amazing, I  guess my TV can pick up some of the better fidelity despite being only 1K, or perhaps normal stuff is really less than 1K.

I was musing about the old Jefferson Pilot CFB broadcasts back in the day, they were AWFUL.  I guess that was when HD started to be a real thing.

This is why I don't have an 80 inch QLED, or the other one, inmy house.  Plus I'm cheap.

ATSC 3.0: Everything You Need to Know About ‘NextGen’ TV | Next TV (https://www.nexttv.com/news/atsc-30-everything-you-need-to-know-broadcast-nextgen-tv)

The so-called “NextGen (https://www.nexttv.com/tag/nextgen-tv)[/iurl]” broadcast technology standard, widely known is ATSC 3.0 (https://www.nexttv.com/tag/atsc-30), is here. Capable of 4K and HDR picture resolutions, as well as advanced Dolby audio wherewithal, among other features, ATSC 3.0 is the first major overhaul to the Advanced Television Systems Committee’s standard for sending and receiving over-the-air (OTA) signals since the group first introduced ATSC 1.0 back in 1996.
You may remember ATSC 1.0. That was the technology that finally took hold in 2009, ushering in the switch from analog to digital television. Capping out at 1080p high-definition resolution, ATSC 1.0 was progeny to the National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard, the antiquated analog television TV viewing experience introduced in 1941, patterned at a time when sitting in front of the TV set to watch broadcasts when they were scheduled was the norm.
ATSC 2.0 was never able to get off the launch pad—it was skipped altogether. But some of its upgrades, however, made it into the ATSC 3.0 standard.

I wish somebody still carried Australian Rules Football.

Sign of the times that a thread on going to football games turns into which TV allows the best game watching experience at home.

Not only does "going out" cost so much more these days (bar tabs, parking fees, etc) but the general experience of leaving your home has gone downhill. Panhandlers walking right up to your car at every red light, angrier than ever customer/fan behavior, endless road construction, long lines and large crowds most everywhere you go (speaking for Southern California).

We're doing the full weekend at TX-OU this year, including the Cowboys game on Sunday afternoon.  That's about all my football travel budget can take this season.

But it'll be a cool game to watch from the comfort of my own home while preparing myself for Texas' game against... errr... Rice... that evening. :)

Probably ends my chances of visiting the Gophers this season

My 3rd trip, the previous two were outstanding games.  Ja'mar Toombs dominated one and Biily Callahan probably had his best win in the other.. Not so sure this weekend's tilt w Bama will be that close.

Catching the White Sox and Stros on Friday.

Every Gopher game save Wisconsin will probably be a morning game, because this conference is still the Big 2 and Little 12 and Michigan-Ohio State must be protected at all costs.

But, Michigan-Ohio State is always played in the first timeslot, noon eastern/11 AM central.

I get it that their local time makes it a noon game and not a morning game, but it's not the conference's fault that the earliest slot is 11 AM central. It's the network partners that determine that.

For anyone lucky enough to be headed to Lincoln this weekend............... here's the official invite

This is your formal invitation to Phil & Harry's BIG RED Sharkwater Party on October 9th!
On October 9th the Huskers will host the Michigan Wolverines in Lincoln, Nebraska.

With a great Kickoff time of 6:44pm.

We will be starting the tailgate party about 10am on Saturday.

Stop by, sit in a lawn chair, eat , drink, and talk college football.

Same spot as the past few seasons. A parking lot on the northwest corner of 8th and "L" Street. The lot is just three blocks south of "O" Street on South 8th street.  Near the Meadow Gold Dairy and under the Rosa Parks Way overpass.

Go to Google Maps and type in, "801 L Street, Lincoln, NE" or try this link:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/801+L+St,+Lincoln,+NE+68508/@40.8103181,-96.7099837,18z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x8796bf03ca51d6b7:0xf179fbb64906ef5d

If you get lost call my cell phone at (712) 870-1298.  I answer to Fearless

Bring whatever food and beverage you'd like. Harry will have a grill there. We’ll have burgers and brats and some beer (Bud Heavy)

A lawn chair and cheap sunglasses will come in handy.

I'll have paper plates, napkins, some mustard, a folding table, a cooler or two, and a large batch of "Sharkwater".

I’m hoping our Michigan Wolverine friends will attend the party!  Opposing fans ALWAYS make the party.

Yes, COVID interrupted this tailgate last season.  This will be my 19th Sharkwater Party.  Harry is kind enough to host the event at his tailgate party, so please be respectful.

Please let me know if you plan to attend.  Trying to get a rough head count.

Fearless Phil

Oh, I thought that you were complaining about the league giving preferential treatment to Michigan and Ohio State, which results in other teams playing at noon/11.

My response was to point out that those two teams' (and the entire league's) biggest game of the year, is also scheduled at noon/11 every single year, so it seems they're "punished" similarly.

If your point was NOT about the noon/11 kickoff time being an undesirable one, then I withdraw my statements. :)

Even bad beer tastes great coming from a wax paper cup at the State Fair of Texas, on the second Saturday of October.

Only thing that can make it taste any better, is a Texas win over the toothless hordes from the north.

Well of course they do.  The designation of  roughneck (or ruffneck) is a bit feared and somewhat respected, in oil country.  Rather than a derogatory term for a rural, country-type person.

A welcoming weekend approaching for those of you busy attending full stadiums this weekend – great to see it!

Meanwhile, will fly early tomorrow into Atlanta and coast down I-85 for Saturday’s Georgia-Auburn game. Planning to hit the interstate Waffle House in La Grange GA as my welcoming back to the South. The owner has overseen this particular location since the late-80s. At times through the 90s her location recorded the company’s busiest months. This until Waffle House added a new location at the next exit before I-85 crosses into Alabama. Now going on six or seven years of making my annual Auburn trip, the owner’s husband, who oversees the afternoon orders, now recognizes me every time. Good folk, devoted Dawg fans, they add way too much sugar too my coffee order and are always up for talking football.

I sure hope they're thinking they don't...

And I've always preferred "dirt burglar" above all others.

Yup, Saturday will be my third game this year in a full stadium.  'Tis glorious.

People in SEC country get really worked up about Waffle House it seems.  We have one here in Austin, and I like it just fine, but local/regional diner chain Jim's is actually much, much better.

Landed in Atlanta and checked into the airport’s Hilton location, which wasted no effort in making its point that I’m back in the South. The hotel bar is NASCAR themed with a #11 Budweiser car displayed at the entrance. And in the ballroom was a adolescent beauty pageant.

The very courteous lady checking me in at the front desk apologized for the “smoke” problem in the room they were assigning me, explaining they were sold out (because of the pageant contestants) and had no options to reassign me. When I got to my room it smelled like pot which, for me, isn’t so bad because living in Southern California, pot is something of a native fragrance most anywhere you might go. The kicker is it’s Room #420.

I attended the Husker game in Norman, OK in September - hd a great time.  The Sooners were great hosts.

I did NOT attend the Michigan game - Sharkwater tailgate

I did attend the Purdue game on 10/30 - good time, disappointing final score

I did NOT attend the tOSU game, my Buckeye buddy bailed because of the 11am kickoff

Not sure if I will attend the Black Friday game vs the Hawkeyes, but I will be tailgating and the weather is expected to be very good

I was looking at a ticket to the Tech game but on reflection decided I liked my TV and sofa better.  The weather should be pretty good and it's a 2 mile walk or so for me.

They had a 40 yard line ticket in the upper for $100.

not from my place, but I'll be at the daughter's for thanksgiving on Thursday.

Daughter's place is 3 miles from the stadium

my tailgate lot is 1 mile
I'm old and ride in a golf cart on the course, but I could walk it

A problem is, for me and many, our TVs now are so good and the food is in the fridge and the sofa is nice and the room is warm.  I was musing about the advantage of being at the game and think there isn't one except for tailgating in a good group etc.

I went to Texas A&M - New Mexico and Texas - Rice back-to-back on the same day back on 9/18, which was a lot of fun.

And then I went to TX-OU in the Cotton Bowl, the kids had a great time and it was nice to be back, since the State Fair was canceled last year for obvious reasons.

After staring at screens from the sofa with good food at the ready for the previous 18 months due to COVID, everyone I know that regularly goes to games was chomping at the bit to be back in the stadium.

I may very easily walk 4 blocks from the tailgate to the warm bar where my daughter will be bar tending with the nice bar stool and good TV, instead of walking a mile to the stadium to sit on the hard bench with no back.

the $25 that would be spent on a game ticket could go towards the good fatherly discounted draws from the tap
and I can still walk 4 blocks back to the tailgate after the game when the bar becomes crowded and loud

Yeah, but even being the misanthrope that I am, there's something about attending a game in person that can't be duplicated. The roar of the crowd, tens of thousands of people all cheering in unison.

It feels like a certain level of singular purpose and collective action that people don't often get to experience... Kinda like a Promise Keepers event, the Nuremburg Rallies, or the Salem Witch Trials.

I made it to all of the Dixie State home games in the spring and fall. They all start at 7:30 which is 9:30 eastern time, so very little overlap with the Big Ten slate. There may have been a time or two that I only went for the second half because OSU was playing at night or whatever, but I made it to at least the second half of every home game.

It was their first two seasons in FCS after moving up from D2, so it's the opposite end of the D1 spectrum than OSU. But they are far more "big time" than any of the D2/D3 Columbus schools that I would occasionally go to, so it wasn't a big culture shock or anything. It was also their final two seasons as "Dixie St" as they are being rebranded next year as "Utah Tech." Utah Tech is what you call your school if Utah, Utah State and even Southern Utah are already taken. Puke.

On the field they were bad. Really bad. They only won two home games, one in the spring and one in the fall, both against Fort Lewis. Not only is Ft Lewis a team from their old D2 Conference, they were the worst team from their old D2 Conference. So they completely smoked them on both occasions.

There only other win during that time period was on the road vs Tarleton St when they were ranked. They also lost to them twice at home while they were unranked, so there's that.

Technically this was the first year of WAC football's triumphant return, although it was not a full interlocking schedule quite yet.

Dixie played 8 ranked FCS teams this fall and really took their lumps. I got to see Bobby Petrino on Saturday, as he brought his Missouri State Bears or whatever out here for a tune up before the playoffs. So that was kind of cool.

So far their best showing at the D1 level has been a 7 point loss to FBS New Mexico St last spring. Although that becomes a lot less impressive when you look at how NMSU actually did last spring.

The stadium was cool. There's a walkway all the way around the perimeter of the track, so you can get right down behind the endzone for goal line plays, and listen to the pads pop.

Only if Bama had lost a chance to meet it's season goals the game before.

Hell, even UGA didn't do that, as they're still in the playoff.
So no SEC team is eligible for a game like that this year for that reason.

Final tally Five games this year, after attending none in 2020:

-Fresno State @ Oregon - Covid test required
-Iowa @ Iowa State - boring game but otherwise a fantastic setting and the Cyclones/Hawkeyes fans and tailgating were as lively as I've seen
-Colorado @ Arizona St
-Georgia @ Auburn - also a boring game but witnessed what would eventually be a national championship team
-California @ Arizona - Arizona's only win, bolstered b/c Cal was down to playing only about 50 scholarship players due to Covid protocol

Would've been six but UCLA backed out of the Holiday Bowl 4 hours before kickoff.

Next season I'm definitely planning to add a Longhorns home game to the rotation. It'll give me reason to visit Austin, a city where I had a fantastic time for the F1 Races in October.
