Title: If you could chose another CFB team to support ...
Post by: Cincydawg on May 07, 2021, 11:24:12 AM
The idea is to have the most fun, win or lose, weather, food, tailgating, low intensity but fun football, nice location, etc.

Ole Miss.

Never been there, but in the South, they're gonna tailgate and have fun whether their team is 12-0 or 0-12. And I've heard there are few finer places to tailgate than Ole Miss. And I've heard great things about the "scenery".

In the other thread, from a football perspective I'd say Virginia Tech. But Blacksburg is in the middle of nowhere and I don't really know anything--even by rumor--about their gameday culture.

I chose a service academy, and mine, based on basically nothing, is Navy. Well, it's probably based on living in Jacksonville from ages 9-14 and going on the USS Saratoga.  Big navy town.
.
They can go 0-12, but you still have a sense of pride in them, for all that they do.

K-State has been this team for me.  Iowa State would be another but not on the list

Ames and Manhattan are close enough I could drive and have some fun.

Colorado

I always love watching games in that stadium, particularly if some light snow is blowing around.  Granted aside from a decade of being elite, they've mostly just been bad, so maybe it would be frustrating than worth it

I went when tOSU played there in 2015. Their GameDay culture gets high marks from me. It is a beautiful area in the mountains of western Virginia, Lane Stadium is nice, and I enjoyed their "Enter Sandman" Stadium entrance. Also, I posted here about going and got invited to a local tailgate and it was great.

Finally, the hotel in which Dirty Dancing was filmed is nearby. It is called Mountain Lake Lodge which is ironic because the lake drained a few years ago. The hotel is also right on the Appalachian Trail. My wife and I stayed there and I still get emails from them about GameDay packages.

Personally, I am no fan of Dirty Dancing but if your wife or girlfriend grew up in the 80's, she is.

I once referred to Virginia Tech as being in western Virginia on these here threads, and it created quite the uproar.

One poster even tried to argue that it was "northern" Virginia. Bay Area Badger, iirc.

Kansas was funny. KC, Lawrence and Manhattan just bing bing bing, all right in a row. Then there isn't squat for the remaining 90% of the state. After that, there continues to not be squat until Denver.

For perspective, the drive from Columbus to KC is about the same distance as the drive from KC to Denver.

Stanford has always been my #2 team.  If I could have picked a second one, it would have been Air Force.  I came very, very close to attending USAFA.

I was at UNC 4 years plus and never attended a game, which I somewhat regret now.  I recall walking by the stadium during a game and hearing applause, like it was a tennis match.  My work was basically across the street through some trees.  They had nice trees.

I've enjoyed my many trips to the little apple.  Been down there for several football games, hoops, vball, baseball.

Ole Miss tailgating is #1.  Oxford a good town too.

I graduated with two who did.  One was ROTC all through high school, so it was no surprise. I have no idea how he ended up. The other one, I was really close to when we were younger, but we sort of drifted apart in high school, and it sort of surprised me. He's still in though, has made it his career

I voted Va Tech. The game OSU had there was a delight. My game day experience was awesome, and rocking out to Metallica to start the game doesn't get any better.

Last year, I had proposed each of us adopt a team outside our conference to "track" and keep tabs on.  Then All H broke loose, but it seems like a thought, to me.  ELA isn't doing his thing now.

I already like the service academies and generally hope they do well, so of the list, I'll pick K-State.

As y'all know, I love weird, run-heavy offenses, and those all fit the bill

Certianly of late. Historically ...

Southern Miss was high up there with Jeff Bower at one point. Looking at the historical record, UCF has the best winning percentage in FBS (57), better than directional state North Carolina. Other better than .500 directionals are Southern Miss .550, South Florida at .548, Central Michigan at .545, Western Michgian at .525 and ECU at .513.

South Carolina and North Carolina State are other non directionals with directions in the name.

If we are including states that contain a direction within the name of the state itself, then West Virginia has to be in there somewhere.

So long as we are going there, Marshall ought to change their name to Western West Virginia. O0

Suthern Cal used to be decent.

South Dakota is good in their league usually.

Interesting question, we could also ask what is the top "city" school, like Cincinnati of Memphis or Houston.

Yes, definitely USCw. Not sure how we missed that one, good call.

UCLA might be the answer to your "city" question as well. :great:

I suppose they could be a city program, sort of, still UCAL though.

University of CITY would be more pure, Pitt, Cincy, Laville, Houston, Memphis, Miami, Boston College (?), ...

Then there are programs with NO geographic term in their name, Notre Dame, Purdue, etc.

South Florida, or USF, is a city (not in name) school.  They had it going really well for a while there and have fallen off a cliff.  I wonder what happened there - talent shouldn't be a problem for the tier that they're on.

Yeah, USUALLY the program with STATE in the name is of lesser import, then the "U of", but OSU and LSU are exceptions.

Georgia State is more of a commuter school, or used to be, they play football now, and have the largest enrollment in the state of GA.

A lot of southern State schools are HBCUs.

Is there a state without a "STATE" named school/  Virginia State?

Wisconsin is one, but that wasn't always the case. WSU got swallowed up by the UW system.

I can't think of any such "State" schools in New England, Hawaii or Alaska.

If they do have them, they are really obscure.

Northern Illinois is not bad.
.484 all-time winning percentage.

Weird job. Lot of MAC short timers. From 1969-1996, they had two winning coaches both who jumped to better jobs (also Lee Corso for one ill-fated year).

Then they got their all-time wins leader, who went .452 with seven winning seasons out of 12. Then a run of three coaches who were all pretty successful and now Hammock, who is struggling mightily.
