Title: 2021 NFL Draft
Post by: ELA on April 22, 2021, 09:28:07 PM
Surprised we didn't already have a thread.  Putting together my big board right now, for my mock draft for next week, and noticing several guys who opted out last year who are falling quite a bit.  Might ease some fears about that becoming a thing post-COVID.

Rousseau from Miami was a top 10 pick going into the year, now has generally a 2nd round grade.  Rashod Bateman, same deal.  Jhamon Ausbon?  Probably a Day 3 pick now.

If I opted out, I would have logged all of my workouts and football-related work put in and given it to every team.  Take it or leave it, but just provide it.  Just the fact you took the effort to do that would impress smart teams.

TE Pitts and WR Toney figure to go in the 1st for the Gators.
OT Forsythe is getting some looks bc he tested well.  He's a long 6'8" and athletic.  Wasn't especially good, though.
Same with DT Slaton.  He's a monster, but didn't play all that well.  If he can learn how to play the position instead of trying to mug the guy in front of him every play, he could be a very late round steal.
Mr. Underperformance, Shoe-Thrower himself, CB Wilson is getting some love, too, due to a good 40 time with a stout build.  It's amazing what can potentially erase a guy who regressed from his FR season.

Really interested to see where Rondale Moore ends up and how early he's picked... I could see him in the late first round, and anything mid-second round or worse he's an absolute steal.

4.29 at the Purdue pro day.

He's invited to the combine which starts next Thursday.

Interested to see where the QB's go. If I'm the Jets, I take Fields #2. Period. Only QB's I'd take in 1st round are Lawerence and Fields. Wouldn't touch Wilson til round 2, Lance til round 3, and Mac Jones til at least the 4th.

Is Moore short?  I'm surprised Toney is 6' even.  He plays like a 5'8" pygmy (in a good way).

I don't pay much attention, but I did see something that had Fields dropping below Matt Jones.  These "predictions" are something to pass time.  I'm content to just await the actual thing.  I guess one can bet on the outcome of course.

Would you say Lawrence is as close to a "sure thing" as there normally is?  If the Bungles draft a QB, I know he's nearly always a bust.

I have no clue if this is a good guess or not:

NFL Mock Drafts 2021 - Football Draft Projections - CBSSports.com (https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/mock-draft/)

I like Fields, I saw him downfield trying to block a couple of times.  He's a competitor.

Moore was listed by Purdue as 5'9"...

Shakur Brown should keep MSU draft streak alive.  Beyond that Naquan Jones is the only other one who might get drafted.

Hoping to finalize my big board over the weekend, so I can get to the draft on Monday.

I think Lawerence is probably the best QB prospect since Luck or Burrow. And that is true of most Bungle draft picks in general- but I feel like Burrow has a chance of being really special- IF they can protect him. He took an absolute beating last year and got hurt. They need to draft and sign him some OL's and stop making him do so many 7-step drops. Protect him and let him get that ball out quickly- and he'll last a long time and be a stud.

Eeek.  That's gong to push him way down, fair or not.
I think in the past it definitely would've hurt him- but with so many smaller WR's excelling now because of all the rule changes- feel like the height really isn't an issue all that much anymore.

Post by: OrangeAfroMan on April 24, 2021, 03:39:38 PM
Yes, it's less of an issue for sure.  But 5'7" is reeeeeeally small.

The draft can hurry up and get over with already if only because the clickbait-y comparisons are out of hand. An "expert" compared Mac Jones to Brady. Another compared Zach Wilson to Favre. At this point it’s editorial malpractice.

Do you think this is what the NFL wanted by moving the draft back?

The early rounds all day Saturday was great.  They just needed to speed it up.

Lot of local smoke the Browns like Zaven Collins LB from Tulsa(ELA has him going next to ATL) here is their scoop

He’s a 260-pound playmaker with the range to get sideline to sideline, and he also has the ball skills of a defensive back, evident in the four interceptions he hauled in during the 2020 campaign. His power from the linebacker spot also makes him a nightmare for blockers to deal with when he blitzes.

Some having them in rd 2 taking - Tyson Campbell, CB, Georgia others like Kelvin Joseph, CB, Kentucky

#209 WR Grimes had a weird thing happen - his initial, unofficial 40 times averaged 4.39, which for a 6'5" guy was great.  Then, he learns the next day (or later that day) that his official average was nearly a full tenth-second slower.

I wonder how many guys that happened to.  You get great initial news and then sink to the end of the draft bc of official times.

I don't think they are looking for a guy to beat out Kirk this Draft.  That gets them a competent backup who can compete next year against whoever they draft or sign in 2022, or against Kirk on a much cheaper deal.

I can't believe that,I mean didn't they drop two no 1s for that pick?I haven't seen him throw but just based on the competition he'll think he got tossed into a wood chipper

Others are saying he played in one game last season?if that's true then that's the dumbest pick since Bellichik took Craig powell no 1` in '94 for the Browns

How in the world NFL professionals with much more exposure to football than myself somehow think Lance is a more worthwhile pick at QB than Justin Fields beats me, big time.

Lawrence and Etienne get to be millionaire dorm mates.

Other tidbits, if you buy them:

Northwestern had as many 1st rounders chosen as OSU and UM put together

Zack Wilson looks like a howdy-doody doll.  Creeps me the hell out.

For better or worse ZW benefitted from playing a ton last year, thus yielding no shortage of game tape for GMs and "experts" to obsess over. We've had to hear so much about ZW we've all become conditioned to him going as early as second, which doesn't make ZW any less worse of a pick for the Jets. I watched a ton of BYU last season (only team playing West of the Rockies before Halloween) and Wilson has a truly fantastic passing ability but lacks in size, mobility, and seems pretty unsure of himself.

After watching the entire first round, there's plenty of questionable GMing to go around.

-I've already whined about the 49ers drafting Trey Lance

-This must be the 3rd straight year where networks haven't had player highlights ready for the Raiders pick b/c Gruden and Mayock go with guys (OT Leatherwood last night) that aren't expected to be drafted until a round later. Always feels like the Raiders are drafting a round behind - taking projected 2nd rounders in the 1st, projected 3rd rounders in the 2nd, etc.

-I don't understand why the Jets TRADED UP from 23 to 14 to take an OL. An OG, no less - when is the last time an OG was drafted in the 1st round? For once an RB (Najee Harris) would've been worth a 1st round pick.

-Good for Mac Jones going to the Patriots, but this is a glorified redo of Jarrett Stidham getting picked out of Auburn.

-For the Michigan fans on here, how good do you expect Kwity Paye to be? NY Giants needed pass rushers and said no thanks.

-Jaguars picking RB Etienne when they have decent RBs and so many needs elsewhere made no sense.

-RBs are so dispensable it's harder to justify as first rounders, however, the Steelers addressed a huge need in taking Najee Harris last night. Excellent pick.

-No problems with Bengals taking Chase over an OL. Chase will be a production stud and there's plenty of NFL ready OL left.

Who is their slot guy?

My pause on Terace is that he's only been "the guy" for like 5 games, ever.  He was mostly the 3rd guy.  That doesn't mean he's not good, but it also means he's only been a full-time X or Z for 5 games.

E.Moore is undersized but was a vacuum cleaner with the ball in the air.  86 catches.....2nd on the team had 27.

But it's the NFL, so stats are basically meaningless and we need to know how quickly he can take a shuttle to the airport or some such thing.

If they don't go WR in the 2nd, I'd love them to pick him up at the top of the 3rd.

Or trade down and get him later in the 2nd.

I think Marshall is my #1 WR left.  The Moores are 2a and 2b in some order.

Big drop down to that next group of Collins, Tylan Wallace, St. Brown, Dyami Brown, Eskridge, Tutu Atwell

IMO, MSU will remain in a sort’ve post-Dantonio rebuild for at least another season. If I gotta pick one point where the cracks were evident it was the slow fallout of the 2016 recruiting class. The roster has been walking-wounded ever since.

I've been wary all along.  Dantonio post 2016 lost his way with recruiting.  But you are never going to win at MSU by winning recruiting wars.  UM, OSU, PSU, ND, they are always going to out recruit you.  In basketball, sure.  You win a bottle a year, and bring in an impact transfer, that works.  In football, if MSU pulls in 2 kids in state that UM wants, and one kid from Ohio that OSU wants, that's a good year...and like 15% of a class.  It certainly is being able to get those 2-3 headliners, but it's much more about your hit rate on identifying which kids UM and OSU didn't want, had slipped through the cracks.

Dantonio early on did that.  And really did such a good job that he got too much leash later on, when what he was really doing was just plucking MAC kids, while the fan base assumed he was mining diamonds.  MSU had maybe 15 kids hit the portal, and I believe only one landed at aP5 school.  A DB that went to WSU.

ok talking the actual draft- I think Chicago got a hell of a lot better now that they have a legit blue-chip QB prospect to build with. Fields was the 2nd best QB in this draft by a mile- and is a supremely talented athlete who is a QB first- athlete second. Basically opposite of a Lamar Jackson. Fields looks to throw first, run only as a last resort- and oh yeah by the way when he runs- he runs 4.4. Blows my mind he fell as far as he did. But the Bears got a steal and he is a LEGIT blue-chip QB prospect. The first one they've ever drafted in the modern era. Broncos should've snatched him up at #9- they will regret taking a CB over a franchise QB.

I think the Jets are going to really regret picking the 13 year old mormon girl over Fields. Not a buyer or believer in Wilson. At all. This will end in disaster. It's the freakin' Jets.

Not sold on Trey Lance at all- but Kyle Shanahan can make any QB at least decent. Lawrence is the best QB prospect by far- but Lance is going to the best offensive/QB coach by far. And that matters.

Urban is going to have the Jags good- and real good sooner than later. Lawrence was the best QB prospect in the draft and best since Luck probably, and the NFL is ALL about the QB. Urbz gots himself a heckuva QB prospect to build a team with. James Robinson was a breakout undrafted rookie RB last season for the Jags, and now they added some serious speed/play-making ability to pair with him in Travis Etienne. Lawrence at QB and Robinson + Etienne - that's a REALLY nice really young backfield to build on for the future.

Bengals made a massive mistake taking a WR over Penei Sewell. I get it- they wanted to pair Burrow back with his former go to guy in college- but Burrow got his ass kicked last year bc the Bengals OL was god awful. He can't throw the ball to Chase if he's on his back and broken in half. Sewell was by far the best OL prospect to come along in ages. I'd compare him to like Jake Long/Joe Thomas. I think we haven't seen OT prospect that good since. And Bengals could've shored up the LT spot for the next 10 years and they said- nah no thanks.

New England bought fools gold with Mac Jones. Not a buyer at all. Kid played on a literally Pro Bowl/1st round All-Star team. He's not the 2nd coming of Tom Brady. There isn't ever going to be another Tom Brady again.

I get the occasional UGA feed, the last one was about having nine draft picks, a new school record.  And I thought, well, what does that mean?

I get that for prospects, it's a good looking figure, come here, look how many of our guys are drafted.  It also correlates pretty well with recruiting numbers 3-4 years ago, which is fine.  It also means the larder was drained a good bit of course.  But, it doesn't have much impact on our results in CFB going forward beyond those arguably slight effects (or not).

Net net net, meh.

The Jets are some sort of vortex of things not working out.  Everything they do ends poorly.  They're a red-headed stepchild in multiple ways:  they're the "other" NY team, they're the "other" green team (Eagles), their draft picks rarely work out.  Nothing with the franchise seems permanent at all.  Even when they peak and sneak into an AFC Championship game....they just never seem to matter.  Not even on the extreme bad end - the Bungles and Browns you can make fun of, but the Jets aren't even on the radar enough to make fun of, really.

They need a brand change more than any other franchise I can think of.  New logo, colors.....anything to help them matter.
