Just for OSU, Laurinaitis over Hawk looks weird.

Laurinaitis was one of the few 3x consensus All-Americans in college football history.
(1 of only 7 since WWII)

I guess that is why they rank them the way they do - Laurinaitis was good, though never as impactful as Hawk, so it is weird looking.

Aaron Donald was great, but he's not there without his NFL career

He was arguably the best safety of his generation in the NFL but I don't really remember Ed Reed being all that dominant in college.

As for MSU, No Dennard or Calhoun seems weird.  Jabrill Peppers remains on brand as the most overrated player ever

He was great, but Berry and Doss were better

Speaking of tackles - Vince Wilfork? He has his own orbit at Miami.

Suh was much more impressive in college than the NFL

Reed and Donald seem to be the only ones in the T10 that don't really have a great case, certainly not on my inner circle, acknowledging you could probably get T10 votes for about 20 guys.

Uhh, Aaron Donald was a legit dude in college.
He won the Outland, Lombardi, Nagurski, and Bednarik awards in 2013.  Name another guy who did that.  Yeah, Suh.  Who else?

I guess I have an issue with Mack being that high.  Yeah, he was great in college, but strength of schedule matters if you're a LB, too.

How could strength of schedule impact how good of a player you are?

I'm sure it's an amalgamation of eye test, stats, team success, and NFL rep.  But 15 sacks vs MAC foes and 15 sacks vs B1G foes is a very different resume.

If it was about how good they were, Sean Taylor wouldn't be behind Jim Leonhard, lol.

He set ncaa record for forced fumbles too.

Would a great LB from Buffalo be in the top 5 if his NFL career stunk though?  I don't think anyone can reasonably make that case.
.
If I can differentiate Emmitt Smith's probable top-10 career SEC rusher career and his NFL all-time leading rusher career, then people can do it for other players, too.
.
But yeah, for lists like these, you could take every group of 20 players and randomize them and no one would be able to tell you did that.

love arenas, but he doesn't belong on this list, especially above bama guys like mosley, hightower, mcclain, kirkpatrick (not fitz, who is on rightly there), milliner, barron, robinson, foster, payne, dareus, just guys off top of my head. obviously not all will fit into this list, but some of them should. and a few, like mosley, mcclain and dareus have a solid argument to be near the top. odd not 1 bama lb made it, and that's probably our deepest position on our decade of teams built on being the top d in cfb.

if arenas is on any list, it should be top return specialists.

It is hard to separate the college and pro careers of guys, especially if you don't follow them that much. JJ Watt isn't in the list, and he will walk into the NFL Hall of Fame, and I remember him putting the Buckeyes in a body bag, but it's not like I watched every game he was in.

Also, never forget Butch Jones wouldn't let him play defensive end.

This seems contradictory.  Do you mean if you didn't follow them that much in college?

Yes, I specifically noticed the lack of an Alabama LB or a Florida DB on the list.  Actually, a shortage of CBs in general.

Both. Like I watch every Ohio State game, and certainly I watch more college games than pro games, but I don't follow other guys so I'm at the mercy of the "well he got voted the George Costanza trophy seven times so he must be good."

Okay.
If you don't have eye test to incorporate, then yeah, you rely more heavily on resume.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I don't typically participate in the power ranking threads, or threads of this type.

My time is limited and anything I pay attention to beyond Purdue is a bonus, but not all that important to me.

Talking Michigan players only here:

Jabrill Peppers is way too high, Lamar Woodley is too low. He played on some trash teams- but if we're talking Michigan guys- I'd throw Brandon Graham in that convo way before Peppers. Brandon Graham frosh season at Michigan was pretty meh, but his sophomore season when he switched to DE he looked very good, and then his last two years at Michigan- he was an absolute animal. One of the most underrated college players of all-time if you ask me.

I don't think most people realize Woodley had all-time great TFL numbers.  It's as if you don't have 15+ sacks, you're ordinary.....not the case.

If you think those are good, check out JJ Watt.

He wouldn’t make the list, but the other DE ij Watt’s first year starting had silly numbers. And UW couldn’t pair that line with a secondary with a jar of spit.

I wish collegefootball reference would pay me to get that site's defensive stats to go back past the year 2000.  It's absurd.
