Yup I was planning on going to a couple of games in the series against OU, but then the kids' soccer games got scheduled and we're all over Central Texas and no time for besibol, sadly.

I did make it to two of the BYU games a couple weeks back.

Horns tie for the conference championship and grab the #1 seed.  We watched some of the WVU series whilst out at COTA for the races.  Still have some troubling inconsistency in the starting pitching, but at this point in the season, it is what it is.

I don't think this looks like an Omaha-bound team, but they'll be a tough out in the tourney.

I tend to agree but both of us have seen prior Longhorn teams in the past make it to Omaha with less talent so who knows

The key as you pointed out is their starting pitchers

Well Texas drew the national #2 seed and will host a regional for the eleventy-billionth time.  I'll probably go down to the game on Friday if the weather is alright.

ASU's offense looks potent, that could be a problem for us.  I'm hoping we'll make it out of the regional but this is one of those Texas teams that is just so inconsistent, no result would surprise me.

Need to rediscover our offense. These "3 runs or less" games are making me nervous.

Exactly my concern.

And then when our ace goes out and gives up 3 or 4 early runs by himself... oof.  That doesn't help.

Well I guess our offense did okay over the weekend.  I got to see some of the first two games, didn't go down last night though.  Too late on a school night.  I'm gonna try to make the Friday and Saturday games for the supers, though.

Our pitching showed up

Our bats were not needed because their pitching walked everybody in sight

Those who didnt walk got hit

In short we were not tested so the jury is still out about our offense

But we did advance and the super regional is in Austin so who knows

You play the team in front of you, but Southern was never going to be much of a test. That's by design, and a decent plum for dominating the regular season.

Fairfield and ASU burned through any pitching they might have had fighting against each other. ASU got to face Texas the next day. Fairfield went and fought through 2 more games (including the ASU rematch 9-7) and arrived at last evening contest completely spent. Texas didn't swing the bat, shouldn't have, and stood there while Fairfield walked, plunked, or WPed all the runs they'd need.

The bottom 3rd of the order is still sort of wasted outs, but it was good to see the team do what it needed to do offensively.

Meanwhile, in the Gainesville, UF is out. South Alabama and South Florida will resume today. If South Alabama prevails (they're up 4-0 in the 5th), I suppose they'll do it over again for the opportunity to travel to Austin this weekend.

Only disappointment to me in the Horns' play, was the baserunning. It was a complete mess at times.  That will cost us against better teams.

ASU

Rice

All are top tier jobs at schools that have won baseball championships.

Oh, and the ags are looking, too.

Texas gets the USF Bulls in the Super Regional. The Bulls were seeded #4 in Gainesville.

With a record barely above the water line, they won their tournament, then won the regional by beating the Gators (everybody did), and hanging on to beat South Alabama.

They're getting hot at the right time, but it seems to be a case of their pitching doing just good enough. You don't make it to a Super Regional by being a joker, but I wonder how long the magic will last for them?
Title: Re: Longhorn Baseball
Post by: utee94 on June 09, 2021, 09:24:11 AM
Texas is playing some pretty gritty, focused baseball right now (baserunning errors aside).  We have the kind of team that keeps pressure on you at all times, forces you to make mistakes, and then capitalizes.   Nobody in Gainesville really put that kind of pressure on USF so it'll definitely be interesting to see how they handle it in Austin.

The Disch is going to be absolutely rocking, that's for sure.

Title: Re: Longhorn Baseball
Post by: Mr Tulip on June 22, 2021, 10:11:27 AM
That was a tough loss. Texas's batters did themselves no favors, but a lot like WVU, MSU has the one fantastic strikeout pitcher. The home plate umpire fell in love with called strike threes, and expanded the strike zone (for reasonably both teams) to a ridiculous chin level three foot wide area. It was the worst of all worlds, and I'm sorry we wasted Ty Madden's skillful outing losing 2-1 on two magical seeing-eye hits.

Now we move into the "non-ace" world. Texas has to hit the ball to win. They don't have to put up 10, but they're going to have to make contact.

Nebraska baseball added a big piece to its coaching staff on Sunday per a program source, as the Huskers will bring on former Texas A&M head coach and Husker pitching coach Rob Childress as its director of player development.

Childress did not have his contract renewed at Texas A&M after 16 seasons as the program's head coach. During his time in College Station, Childress went 622-336-1, and helped Texas A&M to a pair of College World Series appearances. Prior to coaching at Texas A&M, Childress served as Nebraska's pitching coach for eight seasons, helping the program to five NCAA Tournament appearances and three trips to the College World Series.

Nebraska added an important arm out of the transfer portal by adding Texas A&M right-hander Mason Ornelas. The right-handed pitcher announced the transfer on social media on Tuesday afternoon.

The 6-foot, 210-pound Ornelas will have three seasons of eligibility with the Huskers in the 2022 season after playing his first two years of baseball (he will get a Covid year back) at Texas A&M under former head coach Rob Childress. Ornelas entered the transfer portal on June 30 after A&M hired Jim Schlossnagle as head coach.

Ornelas was a big piece of the Aggies’ bullpen last season, making 18 appearances with one start. Ornelas finished 3-2 record with a 5.11 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 37.0 innings of work. Opponents hit .273 off Ornelas last year.

Texas picked up a transfer catcher from Texas A&M.  Not sure why he thinks he'll see more PT here in Austin, since our current catcher is a freshman who's the best we've had since 2002-2005 when Texas made it to the Final 4 every year, championship series 3 of the 4, and won the national championship twice.

But having backups is always nice I guess.

Losing Tanner Witt from the rotation sent the pitching staff scrambling. There really wasn't a suitable replacement, and picking one forced the relief pitching into crisis.
Texas still has a formidable hitting lineup, which is good since apparently they'll have to aim for double digit run totals to win for a while.

How did the horns finish, and any chance we’ll meet up in the super regionals? Aggies had a great year. SEC West champs, and swept Miss St, who was the NC last season. Not bad for a first year coach.

Arkansas' win means that whomever OU plays in the championship series will have more-tired pitching arms than the Sooners will.
Midway through the season, I doubt that many Sooner fans thought they'd do any better than maybe get hot or lucky and win a regional.  That's all I reasonably hoped for.  Now they are two wins away from being national champs.
Strange things happen sometimes.
If they manage to win, OU will be the only school to win the MCWS and the WCWS in the same year, in case anybody missed the TV announcers commentary on the subject.

Took 2/3 from Ole Miss in the regular season but unable to get past OU at the CWS.

Not a bad first season for Schlossnagle, and we finally win a game at the CWS this millennium.

Ags looked good!   Obviously I hated going 2 and Q, especially with the elimination loss coming at the hands of your Ags, but I know we'll be back. And that was the first time in my lifetime I actually felt like TAMU was present and was ready to make some noise at the CWS!  Good things in the future for all of our programs, really.

Yeah this team doesn't have the great talent that many former Horn teams have had, but they're gritty for sure.

And Pierce definitely knows how to coach a tourney run.

ooof. Gritty win on Saturday, not so much yesterday.  Here's hoping for a Horns win in the rubber match.

Not gonna be much traffic for Longhorn beisbol this year, I suspect.  What we lack in pitching, we make up for in also lacking hitting and gloves.  Gonna be a long season methinks.

Of course, Pierce has a way of crapping away the first half of the season, then going on a run and managing some share of a conference title and a decent run in the NCAA tournament.  Ya never know.

Maybe.  Back on page 1 in 2021 I said that the Horns would make the tourney but didn't look like an Omaha-bound team, turns out I was wrong and they made it to the CWS semifinals.

Pierce definitely puts together better second half of the season than first on a regular basis.  Maybe this will be one of those years.

they aren't losing to tomato cans like us. tx is always a contender in my book until it's proven they aren't.

Nice road series win against ranked Tech last weekend.

Now we have a huge OOC series against Washington this weekend.

(that was sarcasm)

Ooof.  Well, that's that, as they say.  Drizzly gray weekend and drizzly gray results for the Horns.
