Title: King Barry
Post by: 847badgerfan on March 28, 2021, 09:14:51 AM
I was thinking this needs its own thread.

Barry Alvarez has announced his retirement at the end of June or so.

Big shoes to fill here, and an anti-athletics chancellor will make the final choice.

Really hope Tommy Thompson gets involved in this one.

How retired is he going to be?

What a great ambassador for Wisconsin he has been.

My guess is he will be down here a whole lot more. He's got a place in Naples.

He has a partial moat.

Isn't he trying to shoe-horn in his No. 2, which might not be a good idea?

Also, I've not thought much about the current chancellor, but her attempts to sidestep public record requirements put her on my shit list.

I've heard he wants to move to his dream job of coaching linebackers at Minnesota

speaking of Lincoln.............

STEVEN M. SIPPLE Lincoln Journal Star

Things I know, and things I think I know:

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez speaks with pride about his Nebraska football roots.

He talks of his deep respect for Bob Devaney and the former Nebraska head coach's rugged style of play. Alvarez played linebacker for Devaney during the mid-1960s. Then, as a high school coach, including a stint as head coach at Lexington High School (1974-75), Alvarez used the sophisticated strength and conditioning program that started at NU under Devaney.

That cuts against his desire to step in and coach the Rose Bowl as needed

it's not likely, but it's also not impossible

I'm saying there's a chance

He's done, save for helping on the fundraising side. In Madison.

There was something fascinating about the finances of paying him when he had the job.

He would be less valuable to any other school but Madison. But because he’s so valuable (mad hard to replace), Madison is the place that would pay him the most. Is a college sports leverage paradox in action.

I always like to say that nobody is irreplaceable, but this may be an exception to that rule.

Ehh. Irreplaceable is always a matter of degree. You have to and will replace Nick Saban. But you can’t really replace what he did.

Even Bo Ryan to Greg Gard. Gard can’t/hasn’t done what Bo did in some areas, but that’s to a degree expected.

Barry started as HC in the first year I started following college football, so he WAS Wisconsin football to me.  It's kind of weird to realize he was AD for longer than he was HC.

Will he be that last football/basketball HC to transition to AD at a Power 5 school like that, after it being the norm for so long?

Probably? I know the SEC has a few baseball coaches still kicking around. The transition is often a mess. And the folks with the skill sets are super rare. The fact that Barry pulled it off at all as frankly kind of crazy

Shouldn't he have to be the most prominent Barry in sports before he can be crowned King?

Take King James for example. There are many Jameses in sports, but when you hear "King James" you automatically know which one it is because he is by far the best James going.

Just off the top of my head I can easily think of two Barrys in sports that overshadow Alvarez, in Sanders and Bonds.

Alvarez juiced his OOC schedule with easy Ws.

I'm guessing his early on O-lines were juicing

since he was modeling after Nebraska

but, I'm only guessing

Nebraska's O-Line liked Shark Water?

they still do

the annual Sharkwater tailgate in Lincoln is hosted by an All-American left guard and attended by an all-american center and possibly the best left guard of all-time. Outland and Lombardi winner

Curious to see who the Badgers replace Alvarez with.   The choice can make or break an athletic department.

He would be very good, but I'm afraid this job is too small-time for him now.

When he was promoted, he handed the baton to bert. So Paul Chryst should be the AD.

That would never happen. PC would rather die of a thousand cuts than have to go mingle and fundraise.

Amen. He's like the Anti-AD.   No doubt Chryst has loved WFH, outside pickup and less engagement with strangers.  Let the guy Coach.
