Title: Spirits Discussion Thread

What's your favorite liquored libation?I mostly stick with the Suds but when foraying into the fire water I enjoy sipping Jim Beam(original),Wild Turkey 101.My one buddy raves about Elijah Craig Small Batch, guess that'll be the next.

In the winter it's mostly Scotch.  Single malt Scotch whiskys for the most part, and even more specifically, the really smoky ones from the Islay region.  I also like bourbon too, occasionally.

In the summer I like margaritas, gin and tonic, and caipirinha.

Other favorite mixed drinks/cocktails that I tend to order as an aperitif before a formal dinner, are sazerac, old fashioned, kir, kir royale, and the French 75.

is that a liqueur/cognac

It's a cocktail.  I prefer mine with rye.

jim beam bottled in bond is pretty good for cheap. angels envy is my go to. i like scotches as well, and single malt is way to go, but i've been mostly bourbon drinking for a few years now.

i also like tequila, doesn't give me headaches like some of the others.

my wife is a big coffee drinker, so we get a lot of irish cream, five farms i think is the brand. comes in an old milk bottle thing.

for mixed drinks, margaritas or white russian.

I like Tito's, Bombay Sapphire and Johnnie Walker Red. I also like the Highland Single Malts.

My favorite Scotch would be Lagavulin 16.

My go tos are Titos, thanks, Tanqueray, and Woodford Reserve.  I've tried most of the popular bourbons, and I can't beat Woodford.

The wife LOVES caiparoskas.  She encountered this in Brazil.  It's made with vodka.  She prefers the GG but I give her Titos when she's not looking.

Hennesy XO is also on my list.

Being in stage 2 renal failure, I have had to cut back on my consumption of alcohol. However, I will still enjoy a Makers Mark and Ginger Ale on occasion as an after dinner drink. I prefer Makers Mark 46, but Makers Original is ok too. And while on vacation, a Bloody Mary with 3 Olives or Grey Goose vodka is a nice go to in the mornings. As I work from home, I could probably get away with having one any morning I wish. :)

For a few years after my kidney failure (and subsequent partial recovery), I lost my taste for beer. Hell, I lost my taste for a lot of things, but for some reason, beer just make my stomach turn. However, lately I've found delight in a nice cold beer now and then while hanging out with some friends.

It diminished kidney function where the kidneys are operating between 50-60% (I think. All I know is mine are around 55%). The doctor's tell me I am in stage 2.

I stand corrected. I just googled it and Stage 2 is a GFR rating of 60-89%. I am in Stage 3, 30-59%. Maybe I should do a better job of listening to my doctor. ~???

I have a thing for what whiskey snobs will say is an abomination, but I love Skewball whiskey.  It is peanut butter flavored.

If I am ordered a drink out, it would probably just be a jack and diet.

Most of the time, it is just a nice cold beer.

A  friend from Amarillo & sooner fan gave me a couple bottles of TX blended while in Texas last week.

Very good although pretty sweet

I'm thankful it was two bottles, because the first one didn't make it out of Texas.

now I want to try the bourbon

My buddy got married at Buffalo Trace, and they were serving Sazerac's at the reception.

I really like Bulleit Rye, and generally really like Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Maker's Mark. Those are all pretty much just served on the rocks. I take scotch neat, and like speyside varieties but don't have a specific go-to.

Other than that, the occasional Gin & Tonic or Bloody Mary are nice.

I drink seasonally in Florida.  I love Irish whiskey, but it gets too hot down here to drink regularly.

Summer is usually vodka.  Mixed with lemonade, tonic, or something of that nature.  There is a distillery in St Pete that makes a good vodka called Banyan Reserve.  I prefer that. Tito's is fine with me as well.  Another good Florida vodka is Monkey In Paradise.

For summer beers, I usually go with German or Belgian wheats.  Franziskaner, Weihenstephaner, Hoegaarden.  I'll drink any of the local craft beers as well.

We started drinking a lot more tequila this past summer.  Typically shots of a blanco.  Haven't found a favorite yet.

Winter is when I break out the whiskey.  Redbreast 15 and Yellow Spot are both delicious.  Jameson is usually my go to cheaper booze.  I recently started drinking Slane, it's excellent.  I prefer it over Jameson.

Will break out the darker beers in winter as well.  Lagers, octoberfests, pumpkins, etc.

Rye and cognac/brandy that actually sounds enticing the Rye would balance the sweetness I'd imagine.

I found an unopened six pack of beer in cans sitting behind some stuff in my house yesterday

Its got to be at least 4 years old

because it was in my house it remained at aprox 70 degrees

will it still be good or will it not be fit to drink

I honestly dont know cause no six pack owned by me ever survived that long before untouched

It won't kill you.

It might not taste all that good after 4 years. Very few beers are really designed to live that long. Freshness is important for flavor.

But there should be nothing dangerous about it.

Gin.  Rehorst,  Bluecoat,  Deaths Door, Boodles.
Single Malt.  Glenmorangie sherry cask offering. Many others as well.
Brandy for Old-fashioneds.  Can't take the WI blood out of me no matter being surrounded by bourbon everywhere.

I’m pretty much a typical trailer park beer drinker.  Never got into the harder stuff.  In the summer I like to occasionally drink Malibu and pineapple.  Good summer drink lounging by a pool or beach.

Out of curiosity, how often do you guys drink?  I basically only drink on the weekend.  I don’t drink every weekend, but when I do, it’s typically a Friday night or Saturday.  It isn’t unusual for me to have a few beers on a Saturday watching a WVU game or something and then not drink again for 3 or 4 weeks.

Thanks, but that is about as good as it will ever get. But no worries. The doctors say that I can live a long and healthy life like that, I just have to watch what I consume, hence the cutting back on alcoholic beverages. I can still have some here and there, but just have to watch it and not go overboard. That and I need to stay out of threads like this because it is making me thirsty. :)

I know this is a thread about spirits and not necessarily beer, but has anyone ever heard of Victory Brewing? They are a craft brewery out of Downingtown PA. A few years back when I was traveling for work on a weekly basis, I was having to spend a lot of time in that area and would frequent this place often. They have a number of specialty brews and some seasonal ones also.

When my son was stationed in Panama City, Fla, he was turned on Victory Brewing beers and was telling me how good they were. I didn't realize that they were actually selling them in Florida.

Anyway, a couple of years ago, I was in south east PA for work and he met me there for an evening as he is now stationed at Andrews in Maryland and was only a couple of hours away from me. I took him to Victory Brew Pub for dinner and he got a kick out of that, sending pictures of him at the brewery to friends he still has in Fla.

There are so many craft breweries not I can't keep up.  The wife likes Sweetwater 420, and it's decent stuff.  Their pub is a couple miles north of me and is really nice, good food, probably 35 beers on tap.  It is 66°F and sunny, they are probably packed.

Yeah, Victory has been around quite a while. They're in sort of the old guard of craft beer and were around before the current boom.

Looking at their history, they were founded in the big "microbrew" boom of the 1990s, and survived the crash thereafter. I found them when I was getting into craft in the mid-2000s when I lived in GA.

Really solid beers out of there, so it's no surprise they've survived and thrived.

this is the one spot I'm a bit successful at cutting back....

I'm trying not to drink every night after work and during my evening meal.  I can do it unless my meal consists of something that just pairs too well with beer.

Ya my corner store use to carry Victory - good stuff haven't seen it in a while as he has local crafts crowding them out

Yeah, back to the hard stuff.   Still waiting for one more tax statement,  but unwinding with a drink as I tidy up my materials for the preparer.  Despite taking a few heavy duty tax law classes some time ago, pretty convinced I would commit malpractice if I did my own these days.

I was going to ask him...

Are there actually meals that don't pair well with beer?!?!

I used a preparer when still with my ex, because she had started that business which made taxes a lot more complex. Even when she no longer operated it, we stayed with that preparer.

Now that I'm shed of her, I do my own via Turbotax online. My taxes are extremely simple. The hardest bit is going through capital gains, because some of my stock sales are acquired via an employee stock purchase plan and some from restricted stock unit [RSU] grants, and the RSU show up on my primary tax documents as $0 cost basis. So I have to go through all the supplemental info to get the adjusted cost basis for taxes.

But since I don't have enough deductions to itemize, that's about as hard as it gets.

true, we could both add to the list

trying to cut out 4 to 6 beers a night was more about dropping 10-20 pounds than the health of my liver

last night I had boneless skinless chicken breast with some wing sauce, fried taters, & peas
the wing sauce almost required a beer, but I was strong

I prefer wine in general of course, but I think some meals go a lot better with wine than beer, but I can't think of anything that won't work with beer of one sort or the other.  Carbonation often obscures flaws in a beverage.

That is the main reason we have sparkling Champagne.  They do make some still wine in Champagne, but apparently it's not very good.

I've never found any.

A very austere white wine can pair very well with steak in my view.

Eggs, does beer go well with eggs?

I sat in a bar in one small town while the wife shopped for art down the street.  I had wine, the guys around me drank Coke, seriously.  Their DUI limits are 0.4% as I recall.

Woman: Do you drink beer?
Man: Yes
Woman: How many beers a day?
Man: Usually about 3
Woman: How much do you pay per beer?
Man: $5.00, including tip
Woman: And how long have you been drinking?
Man: About 20 years, I suppose.
Woman: So a beer costs $5 and you have 3 beers a day, which puts your spending each month at $450, or $5400 annually. Not accounting for inflation, you have spent $108,000 in the last 20 years! That money could 've been put into an investment account and, after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you would now have enough money to buy a Ferrari.
Man: Do you drink beer?
Woman: No
Man: Where’s your Ferrari?

Hey y'all. Just dropped by for a bit, figured I'd say hi on this thread.

Favorite is MacAllan 12--what I would drink if it were my last. Someone gave me a bottle of 15 a while back, which was nice, but I wouldn't want to pay for it. I like the Highland single malts neat, but I'm not a fan of the Speyside (too peaty). Lagavulin 16 is excellent stuff, too.

I've been drinking Japanese whiskys a little of late (Costco sells them at reasonable prices). I tend to have one nice bottle and one affordable bottle at a time. Suntory on the affordable side, right now the nicer one is Kaiyu. Both are blended, both are good.

I tend to keep a 1.5l of Makers, Bulleit, or Woodford in my cabinet, and drink those on the rocks. JW Red on the rocks is fine for a daily drink (not actually daily, but when you don't feel like spending much on it). Currently I have a bottle of Dewar's White that someone gave me. It's about the same as JW Red. Fine.

A friend brought me a numbered bottle of Honey Hatch jalapeno whiskey from Colorado. It's awful. Just terrible. The friend claims to like it. It will sit in my cabinet for a long, long time.

Since the pandemic, I started drinking more old fashioneds, and I make them the Wisconsin way, so with a bit of orange and cherry muddled in, except with bourbon (generally Makers), not brandy, and I don't add water/juice/soda. Sometimes I make an old Manhattan/Man-fashioned? A cross between an old fashioned and a Manhattan--basically an old fashioned with Cointreau added, and orange bitters.

I've also taken to drinking a Irish cream as a dessert, on the rocks. The alcohol content is more like a dessert wine than a liquor, but it tastes way better than dessert wine.

Recently I picked up a 1.5 of Bombay Sapphire and have been enjoying G&Ts, which I've always liked. Never got into martinis, though.

As for frequency, for a long while starting last March, I was having an old fashioned to kick off the weekend...sometimes two. Including wine and beer, I probably have a drink or two three times a week (whether beer, wine, or cocktail). Sometimes more, sometimes less. Most Fridays. I rarely have more than three drinks in a sitting--more often one or two, except on special occasions. When I visit Wisconsin (which I haven't done since last March) that number tends to go up a *little.*

Vodka never did anything for me, and tequila was only ever for shots (a young man's game) or margaritas, which are good on occasion. Rum is mostly good with something else sweet, like soda, so I don't tend to drink it. I do have a bottle of Kraken rum that one of the parents of one of the kids I coached in soccer gave me (our team name was the Kraken). It's actually pretty good on the rocks, but it can hit like a ton of bricks. The instances of a vicious hangover despite only having one drink have been pretty high.

SFIrish doesn't drink cocktails, but she gets jealous every now and again when I have one because we're not in the mood to open a bottle of wine, and beer just isn't quite right for the moment. She still doesn't have one, but she says she wishes there were one she likes.

Mixing threads, SFIrish and I did go to a (virtual) beer tasting with Ricky Watters a few months ago. Yes, that Ricky Watters. And he interacted just like any other ND grad, which was pretty cool. If you're into pilsners, I recommend North Coast Brewery's Scrimshaw. Pretty sure it's distributed nationally.

Anyway, hope you are all doing well--and that we can all go to a college football games in the fall.
