How da hell does the point system work if they don't wind up playing the same number of games?

Christopulos is the first Husker to earn the Freshman of the Year award. The Layton, Utah native is ranked first on vault (14.86 avg.) and holds the nation's highest score (14.95) of the year. Christopulos has tallied five event titles this season, four on vault and one on rings (the first rings title for Nebraska since 2018). Christopulos was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week and CGA Rookie of the Week three times each.

I know the bar for the student announcers they use for these BTN+ games it's low. But my God, the two Minnesota announcers, are absolutely brutal.  The one just asked the other if it was a save opportunity, and the other responded he did not know what the requirements were for a save.  Now this was not a weird situation, the pitcher just came on in the top of the 9th with a two-run lead

Maryland whips Penn St 17-10, while Rutgers edges Ohio St 10-9.

The Wolverines collect their first win vs Johns Hopkins in school history 13-10, shattering their previous school record of one (1) Conference win (Big Ten/ECAC) in a singular season. Maryland becomes their only uncollected Big Ten scalp all time, and that is their opponent next week.

Looks like the Terps have clinched at least a "share" of the Big Ten Lacrosse Title, seeing as there are only two games left. Since they handed Rutgers both of their losses, they have definitely clinched the #1 seed already.

Extending that logic, Rutgers has clinched the #2 seed, being two games up on OSU, who they beat twice.

Seeds #3 and #4 are still wide ass open.

An NFL coach (Rex Ryan?) used the term in order to describe a WR while breaking down film, and I found it funny.

FWIW, OSU can clinch a #3 seed with a win over either Maryland (unlikely) or Penn St (more likely).

By the end of the fifth rotation, a national championship was not within reach for Nebraska. Stanford and Oklahoma were just too good on this night.

But the Husker men's gymnastics team had a chance to stick a big landing and finish off a year greatly challenged by COVID-19 the right way.

No. 4 Nebraska popped for a big score on its final event, vault, to shoot from sixth place to fourth place in the final team standings at the NCAA Championships on Saturday in Minneapolis.

No. 3 Stanford won its second straight national championship with an impressive score of 414.521. Top-ranked Oklahoma (411.591) was second and Big Ten champion and No. 2 Michigan (410.358) was third.

Nebraska, battling Minnesota for fourth, trailed the Golden Gophers by nearly five points entering the final event. The Huskers proceeded to reel off five 14s for a 72.098 on vault, NU's best event, to edge Minnesota 406.624-406.291.

Lacrosse Week 9

Maryland clinches an outright Regular Season Big Ten Title with a win over OSU.

#2 seed Rutgers dispatched of Hopkins with ease, while Penn St edged the Wolverines by one goal in OT.

.

Standings
9-0 Maryland
7-2 Rutgers
4-5 Ohio State
3-6 Penn State
2-7 Hopkins, Michigan
.

Week 10 is the final week of the regular season. The headliner will be between Ohio State and Penn State, with the 3 seed on the line. (one and two are already shored up)

Apparently they are expanding the Big Ten tourney from 4 teams to all 6 just for this year, which seems strange during a pandemic. If true, then both Michigan and Hopkins will more than likely finish tied for last place at 2-8 since they are playing Rutgers and Maryland respectively to close things out. The Wolverines and Blue Jays of course went 1-1 against each other, and I have no idea what the next tiebreaker would be. Normally it doesn't get past Head to Head, since they generally play each other only once.

Long story short: we might get a little bit of bonus OSU-Michigan action in the opening round.

Should Hopkins pull off the unthinkable and shock Maryland in a "throw out the records" rivalry game, then they could maybe wrangle the four seed from PSU; assuming the Leos also lose to the Buckeyes. We once again would have the 1-1 against each other thing going on, but PSU and Hopkins would be playing each other no matter what in that scenario, regardless of which one is the 4 seed or the 5 seed. So it's just a minor technicality.

I suppose it isn't all that far fetched that Michigan could also knock off Rutgers, which would really open up a Pandora's box of possibilities with regards to the various scenarios and tie breakers that would have to be sorted through. But I am venturing out into the weeds a little bit here, so I will leave it at that.

Cheers,

:singing:

Lacrosse Week 10

That was one helluva finish, with all three games being decided by exactly one goal.

Mighty Maryland carries the unbeaten regular season across the finish line, by surviving a "throw out the records" rivalry game vs lowly Johns Hopkins 14-13.

Penn St continues their hex over the Buckeyes, with a 10-9 win that catapults them into the 3 seed.

The Wolverines came oh so close to a monster upset over Rutgers, but ultimately beefed it in a 13-12 loss to the Knights.

With Smith leading the charge, the Huskers earned a tie for second with No. 19 Maryland and No. 25 Michigan to post their best team finish at a conference championship since earning runner-up honors in the Big Eight in 1984.

In the late '90s lacrosse really felt like it was about to break through. American pie even tried to capitalize on it. For whatever reason, it didn't.

I remember religiously watching the lacrosse Final four on ESPN back in the early and mid-90s simply because it had a college football feel, with the bands And what not, in an era where you couldn't just go to YouTube and flip on whatever college football game you wanted to see

In the 90s there were only six D1 teams west of PA, and they called it the Great Western Lacrosse Conference.

It was Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan State, Butler, Denver and Air Force. Then in the late 90s things got pretty bleak when Michigan State dropped Lacrosse and Butler had a sex change operation (they dropped men's lacrosse and added women's lacrosse). Bellarmine (Louisville) got going around then though, and Detroit Mercy shortly thereafter, bumping it back up to six.

Today there are a lot more teams in the Midwest and West, but they are all divided up into different conferences. Notre Dame is in the ACC, Denver and Marquette are in the Big East, Ohio State and Michigan are in the Big Ten.

Starting next year there will once again be a conference batting cleanup out west, only this time it will be under the misleading ASun banner; Utah, Air Force, Bellarmine, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy and Robert Morris; which is the only team in western PA (which is kind of ridiculous because PA has a crap load of D1 lacrosse teams). So that will consolidate a lot of western teams that were not consolidated much at all up until this point.

You can right click on this map and open it in a new tab if you want to see how the teams are divided up today (pre ASun).

I think sport specialization is hurting it too.  Our HS lacrosse team was decent, but it was a lot of of guys that played soccer or football in the fall; and/or basketball or hockey in the winter.

There's unfortunately a lot less of those types now.  I know it's hurting HS baseball numbers too.

Somehow MSU's womens soccer coach was allowed to retire following 30 years and 4 NCAA tournament appearances.  I wish I had that kid of job security.

They hired Grand Valley State's coach, who has done very well at the D2 level

Hosler, who concluded his seventh season as head coach of the Grand Valley State women's soccer team this spring, posted the highest winning percentage of any coach in Laker history, led GVSU to three NCAA Championships, five NCAA title game appearances and reached at least the Elite Eight in six seasons (there was no Division II NCAA Tournament in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic). He leaves GVSU with an overall record of 144-12-6, the best winning percentage in all of NCAA Soccer during that span, and a 63-2-2 mark in GLIAC play.

Former Husker Jordan Burroughs claimed a fifth world wrestling title Monday at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships in Olso, Norway. The victory in the men’s freestyle 79kg final came just months after the 2012 Olympic gold medalist missed out on a berth to the Tokyo Olympic Games.

In Monday's final, Burroughs defeated Iranian Mohammad Nokhodi, 5-1. Burroughs took an early 3-0 lead with a double-leg takedown followed closely by another double.

The gold medal ties Burroughs with John Smith’s U.S. freestyle record of six World and Olympic gold medals combined. Burroughs previously won world titles in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017, in addition to his Olympic triumph in London.

Delaying MSU clinching a BTT bid
Actually seems like MSU did already clinch going into the final weekend.

Top 8 qualify.

MSU is in 6th with 8 points.  With a win and a Wisconsin loss, they would move up to 5th.  But even with a loss to Northwestern, which would drop MSU behind Northwestern, Rutgers and Ohio State are currently 7th and 8th with 7 and 6 points, and play each other.  So even with an MSU loss, the loser of Rutgers and Ohio State would stay behind them, and MSU would retain 8th.  A tie would still keep OSU behind MSU.

And in his first year, MSU has qualified for the conference tournament, which only takes the top eight schools, for the first time in a decade.
Bummer, MSU finishes 4th in the conference, but was not one of the 6 schools to earn an NCAA bid

The No. 8 Nebraska wrestling team's home match with South Dakota State scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 18 has been canceled due to COVID related illnesses within the Nebraska program.

Ticket holders will be refunded for tickets purchased for the canceled dual. Refunds will be issued at the conclusion of the season to include any further cancellations necessary during regular season play.

The Huskers will take a few weeks off before returning to action on Friday, Jan. 7 to face Purdue at home.

He's definitely much better as a host than in the booth.  Not sure why ESPN couldn't figure that out.  Granted I'm not sure that's actually a promotion there.  Aside from Gameday, I can't name one pure studio host at the WWL.  There's no John Saunders there anymore

Took my youngest to the OSU woman's Hockey game tonight. The 2nd Ranked Buckeyes thumped the 3rd ranked Badgers 5-1. Standing room only amazing crowd. Really entertaining game, Wisconsin was bigger, faster, and seemed more skillful, but OSU's goalie stood on her head, and whoop a counter attack goal by the Bucks.

The Lady Bucks really seemed to enjoy having us at the game. The entire team paused to give my daughter a high five, paid her complements, and thank her for coming, all because we got stuck in no mans land between concessions and their path to the locker room for intermission. They made her night.

Yeah, that old rink is cool. I used to go to one game per year.

If you go to the other end of the stands from the entrance and sit in the back row, there's a gap in the wall where you can watch them prepare the Zamboni for it's next run. It's like a Nascar Pit crew, only with a lot more water involved.

But yeah, it was weird that the locker rooms, concessions and restrooms were in St Johns, and that they had to walk across a sidewalk in skates in order to get from the locker room to the rink. But St Johns is fun to walk, because it doubles as a Buckeye museum.

The fact that the next two couches would do worse than the prior coach when we had Rick Comley trading recruiting budget for salary a decade ago is unfathomable.

I think only UM, OSU and PSU sponsor as many varsity sports as MSU in the Big Ten.  And no SEC schools do.  Why the hell did we dump swimming when the most expensive sport is a joke?  PLEASE CUT HOCKEY!

Beat Purdue in the BTT.

I've been down on Suzy Merhcant, the program has stagnated, UM has gone from a garbage program to a title contender.  But to be a middle of the pack team, playing on Friday in the BTT, missing 2 starters all season with season ending surgeries, a 3rd since winter break due to transfer, and a 4th since January due to a third season ending injury, is quite a task.

They had two starters with 4 fouls in the 3rd quarter when another twisted her ankle.  She looked to the bench, and was basically told, "we only have 5 players left"

If those three all come back next year, MSU could be pretty good

Gave #1 OSU a fight today, fell behind by 20, got it to within 6 in the final minutes, but OSU pushed it back out at the FT line.

Clouden was spent, and we shot 41% from the line, compared to 80% (-11), but the two freshmen put on a show.  Ekh scored 21 points on 6 made 3s, and last year's Michigan Miss Basketball did this

https://twitter.com/MichiganStOnBTN/status/1499808982273167364?s=20&t=rqRKe-j5vJt-M3TzIGjFjA

You get those 3 injured starters back, with these freshman, and the chance Clouden takes advantage of her COVID year, should be much better last year.

It was a rough round for the Big Ten schools. #5 Wisconsin lost to #3 Northeastern, which is to be expected if the seeding is accurate. But then the #2 Gophers got upset by #8 Duluth. On top of that #1 OSU needed OT in order to get past #7 Quinnipiac.

So the Frozen Four will be a pair of Midwest vs New England match ups:

#1 OSU vs #6 Yale

#3 Northeastern vs #8 Duluth

Big Ten Lacrosse starts this week, with each team playing five games in five weeks vs the other five teams, followed by the Big Ten Tournament.

Maryland is undefeated and has been ranked #1 every week but the preseason, which had two time defending NC Virginia in the top spot. The Terps supplanted them week 1, and beat the snot out of them last weekend, so they are the team to beat. Rutgers and Ohio State are also ranked in the Top 20. Michigan and J Hopkins just fell out of the rankings this week. Penn State is really bad this year.

The main challengers to the Big Ten are as usual the ACC and the Ivy League. The Ivy has six ranked teams; everyone but Dartmouth. The ACC has four teams in the Top 20, every team but Syracuse. This may be the first time that J Hopkins and Syracuse have ever been simultaneously unranked in the entire history of the sport. They are the brightest of blue bloods.

The Patriot League contributes a trio of teams to the rankings, while the Big East has only a pair of ranked teams. The Colonial and SoCon each have one.

The new conference batting cleanup in the midwest/west launches this year, in the spirit of the old Great Western Lacrosse League. Robert Morris, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Bellarmine KY, Air Force and Utah will join forces. "What is the name of the new conference?" you ask? Why, it is the "Atlantic Sun" of course. What else would you name a conference that contains most of the teams west of Pittsburgh?

Best place (https://www.insidelacrosse.com/league/DI/teams) to follow along

Women's Gymnastics is the one sport that the Mountain time zone actually excels at. The Utes lead the Nation in NCs, while Arizona, Arizona St, Boise, BYU, Utah St, Southern Utah and Denver are all perennial Top 25 teams. Air Force is the only weak link, which is understandable.

Big Ten week 4

Standings

The regular season concludes with Rivalry Week. Rutgers can still win a share of the regular season title if they beat Penn St, and Maryland loses to J Hopkins. Maryland is undefeated both in and out of Conference and Hopkins has struggled to say the least of it, but it is one of those "throw out the records" type rivalry games.

The Nebraska men's gymnastics team claimed fourth place at the NCAA Championships for the second straight season.

The fourth-ranked Huskers posted a 406.453 on Saturday night at the Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma. Defending national champion Stanford ran away with the team title with a 423.628. No. 2 Oklahoma (414.555) was second and No. 3 and Big Ten champion Michigan (414.490) was third.

NU finished ahead of Ohio State (399.326) and Illinois (398.523).

If you look up thread to page 3 of last year's lacrosse season, you will see that I'm not blowing smoke about the nature of this Hopkins-Maryland rivalry. Maryland was undefeated, Hopkins was tied with Michigan for last place, yet Hopkins somehow only lost by 1 goal to Maryland in the regular season finale, then they made it all the way to the Big Ten CCG as the 6 seed, where they lost to Maryland by a mere 2 goals.

In the immortal words of Terrell Owens, getcha popcorn ready.

Technically the Wildcats can still win a share of it too if the Terps barf up a game against the Wolverines next weekend, which is highly improbable. Even then, the Terps would still get the one seed in the Big Ten Tournament due to the H-H win over the Wildcats.

Wed May 11 (tonight)

  • Play in team A: Vermont vs Manhattan
  • Play in team B: Robert Morris vs Delaware

The two play in games were about as lopsided as they could be.

First the Vermont Catamounts absolutely annihilated Manhattan 15-3. As a reward they will play #1 Maryland, where they will be lucky to keep it as respectable as Manhattan did against them.

Then the Delaware Blue Hens obliterated Robert Morris 20-8. Now they will be cannon fodder for #2 Georgetown.

Both Manhattan and Robert Morris were non-champions that got hot and won their conference tournaments, MAAC and ASun respectively. RMU finished second behind the Utes, and Manhattan was a game behind a pair of co-champions.
Vermont on the other hand ran away with the America East titles, while Delaware was in the colonial where half the teams were 3-2, while the other half were 2-3. They had the best overall record of the three co-champions though, and won the tournament of course.

Johnny Hopkins was the lone Big Ten Casualty in round one, losing to Duke.

Northwestern obliterated Central Michigan, Rutgers put a pretty good whooping on St Joe's, and Michigan took down the Domers rather handily. Maryland of course had a bye.

Michigan and Northwestern will play each other on Sunday. The Wildcats defeated the Wolverines 12-9 during the regular season. The Terps will have to settle for a rekindling of their old Duke rivalry, instead of another thumping of J Hopkins. Rutgers will play Stony Brook as an underdog, and surviving that would put them up against the UNC-Virginia winner.

UCLA and USC don't bring much to the table as far as Northeastern sports such as Ice Hockey, Field Hockey and Lacrosse are concerned, but they do have one WLax program between them with USC. That elevates the number of participants to eight. Northwestern is the only other team that's not in the Eastern Time Zone, so that will be interesting.

The Pac 12 will maintain their auto bid by extending a lifeline to SDSU and UC Davis, which probably saves those two programs after Fresno and St Mary's (CA) recently dropped the sport.

USC and UCLA do bring a few west coast sports a little bit closer to Big Ten sponsorship. They both have a Beach Volleyball team, which triples the number of participating teams with Nebraska as the lone participant prior to their inclusion. They also provide a pair of Men's Volleyball programs, which doubles the number as OSU and PSU already have teams. They also have both men's and women's water polo. Michigan and Indiana have men's water polo iirc, so that number is doubled. Pretty sure those are the first two women's water polo programs though.

The rest of their sports are already Big Ten sponsored.

16 months after his hiring, he took over a program that I believe went winless in the conference play only COVID season, and has them 7-0-1 in the Big Ten, and ranked #15 in the nation.  They play Northwestern on Sunday, and the winner likely wins the Big Ten championship, and the #1 seed in the conference tourney.

Tough break for Northwestern.  They are #2 in the standings and in the computer ratings, but Rutgers is #3 (#15 nationally) and wound up with the 7 seed

Mine, but in my defense I didn't think that they'd actually do it. O0

It was a throwback to the 2020 fanless COVID season.  I also don't get the point. Nobody is traveling to a neutral site. Women's soccer tournament. Every big 10 tournament aside from football and basketball, should just be played at the home site of the regular season champion

#12 MSU gymnastics upset #7 Michigan for the first time in 16 years.

They nearly knocked off #7 Alabama on the road, before winning at NC State, prior to that.

This coming off the programs best finish in a generation.  What head coach Mike Rowe has been able to do, digging this program out of what has to be in the running for the largest scandal in college sports is amazing.  A team doctor and trainer sexually abusing dozens of athletes, and the head coach actively covering for them for years.

We were at the UIHC for a medical procedure today. I took this photo from the top of the parking ramp of the back of the Kinnick Stadium north scoreboard. The mystic appearance is from the funnels next to the ramp that produce warm moist air and fog everything up. But there is little mystery behind the Hawkeyes WBB team this season.

The Husker men won their first Big Ten outdoor title since 2016 with 151 points, their most at a conference meet since 2004. Minnesota was second with 122 points, and Iowa was third with 120 points. It's the 30th all-time conference outdoor title for the Husker men and their 68th conference title overall. It also marks their first conference championship under first-year head coach Justin St. Clair.

The Nebraska women finished third with 112 points, which was their most points ever at a Big Ten meet. It was also their best Big Ten outdoor finish since placing third in 2016. Nebraska was just behind Michigan (139) and Ohio State (123).
