All of these. I've also never seen Titanic, and I've caught a lot of grief for not seeing it. I know how it ends.
I think I was the only person in my middle school class who didn't make multiple visits to the cinema to see that movie during the Christmas break of 1997.
Never saw Gone With The Wind either.

Guess we were bad parents cause even with raising 2 children we still had date night

On The Waterfront is a classic. Marlon Brando as a young and up-and-coming actor... Before he was swallowed by a larger and much less interesting actor.

The problem now is it seems like every move is a superhero movie or an arthouse award-bait movie.
It's either total escapism or absolute art.
We try and watch all of the Best Picture nominees every year, and while every year there are a couple that are good, it's hard to say they are enjoyable.

Not a movie I haven't seen, but a prior generation's iconic movie about the Titanic was 1958's A Night to Remember.
Interesting trivia, Bernard Fox appears in both the 1958 and the 1997 films. In the 1958 film he plays the young lookout, Frederick Fleet who first spotted the iceberg and in the 1997 film he plays Archibald Gracie IV, one of the wealthy passengers.

I love movies and see a lot of them. I've seen pretty much all the others listed on this thread so far.

Right. If this was a first date I agree but if you have been married for 20+ years and raised children then you've met

when me and mrs rtf were dating, we got into a lot of movies free, cause i knew a guy. :67: we'd go watch a film, then grab some coffee and walk in the park. did that at least twice a week. i bet i saw 75-80% of the movies in theatres in town from 99-05.

But of the top some one mentioned the James Dean films. And you can throw in On the Waterfront
I love the old noir films and seen a large number of them. Problem is I can't get my wife to watch them. Finally got her to watch The Maltese Falcon a couple of weeks ago, she was not impressed. I don't know what is wrong with her.

I've seen most of his movies. It can't be overstated just how much he changed acting. Before him it was over the top, campy, stupid, unrealistic, ridiculous, and well just plain awful.
There has never been a bigger example of before and after in the history of anything as there was in acting before Brando and acting after Brando.
Dude did his job at his peak better than anybody has ever done their job- and that includes Jordan or Brady.

He told me that and I thought "Well that is probably a pretty good part... Adams was pretty important."
It wasn't until the actual show that I realized that he was the damn lead lol...

I'm with you on that. Kelly's Heroes was a great mix of a war movie with a lot of humor. While Oddball (Sutherland) had some great lines, I really liked how O'Conner plays the General, not really knowing what is going on with his own command. He nailed that part.

I've been a big fan of John Wayne films since I was a kid. There were a lot of classics, but one of my favorite is The Quiet Man with Maureen O'Hara. Very well done movie with a good story line and some well timed comedy.
As for classics that I have NOT seen:
- All of the Lord of the Rings - I saw a few mins of one and was quickly put to sleep
- Most of Harry Potter - I think I saw the first one because the kids wanted to see it. I have no interest in any of the others, kids saw it without me.
- West Side Story - No interest
- Singing in the Rain - No thanks
- 12 Angry Men - I need to watch this one, just never caught it when it was on.

One of my other go to actors is Cary Grant. My favorite movie from his is Father Goose. When my youngest daughter was about 10-12 years old, I found that movie on DVD. She fell in love with it and would watch it when she had nothing else to do. She then turned some of her friends on to it and they liked it too. I figured that I would prefer he watching that than some of the garbage that is being made these days.
Another Cary Grant film that I have and the kids liked was Operation Petticoat with Tony Curtis as a co-star. Tony Curtis held his own with Grant in this movie. Another of my all time favorites.

The Quiet Man is watched in my family every St. Patrick's Day.

But I'm also not sure a movie has to be a classic to be iconic. Avatar, in many ways, should be considered an iconic movie. But I don't know if many would call it "classic."

I was listening to a Rolling Stone interview after JB died and they were discussing his mecurial rise.In '78-'79 SNL rose to the top of the ratings,Animal House was leading movie tickets sales,the "A Briefcase Full of Blues" shot to the top of the Billboard Charts.Never had one entertainer been so drunk with success in such a short time frame.He was at the top in TV/Movies/Music - unbelievable.Of course the "Blues Brothers" came out before he passed and pretty much cemented his place in entertainment history.I honestly don't think a president's passing bothered me as much as JB's.I still have their album BTW

That sounds a lot like people used to do with the Rocky Horror Picture Show. While growing up in Columbus, there was a theater a few blocks south of our house that ran RHPS for years every Fri and Sat night. The same people would dress up and go see the movie every weekend. It was like a religion.
A couple of friends and I decide we would go one night to see what it was all about. I will say, it was an event. Not a movie that I would ever want to see again, but it was more about the event than it was the movie in my opinion.

Airplane was like that for me. There was so much going on in the movie that you had to watch it several times to pick up on the subtle jokes or background scenes. It was funny enough that when Airplane II came out, I watched it. But just like every other sequel, it was lacking in that they just did the same jokes with different actors, and not very well.

I was in high school theater so several of my friends were amongst the cast members that would play out the movie down below the screen, as the movie went on. At the theater closest to our high school, that movie ran for something like 30 years unbroken as a midnight feature on Thurs-Sun nights.
I saw it a few times, I like the music, but it always seemed strange to me that high school kids would act it out simultaneously. It's a pretty... bawdy... show, to say the very least.

The nights she was busy with her Rocky duties, I wasn't typically spending alone. We weren't exclusive.
She went to Northwestern and got a theater degree, and ultimately ended up in LA acting, directing, producing some small-time stuff. We're Facebook friends to this day.

Those books were great in that they had kids reading for pleasure back around 15-20 years ago. I'm not a fan of magic in movies, because anything can just happen, no matter how crazy, and it's just chalked up to magic.

when you have set rules and laws for how things work within that world (and you explain it well and do so before it's a major plot point), it works fine. suspension of disbelief. harry potter does that pretty well, both in books and in films. matrix (original) is another good example.
for a bad example, the new star wars trilogy is an easy target. force users were established to be trained over long periods before mastering it. in the original trilogy, luke is seen training several times to learn how to control the force and use it to his advantage, and because it wasn't at a young age, he struggles with it throughout the films, losing battles vs those that are stronger and have trained longer than he has.
in the prequels, even if you don't like them, they establish that they should be in training at a very young age for best development.
in the new trilogy, rey just overpowers a strong, life-long trained force user in force mind reading at a whim. she also knows inherently how to use a lightsaber (established in originals and prequels as a weapon for force users only) without ever having held one before, much less learning how to fight with one. and once again, bests an opponent that is well training in the force. not only that, but fin uses the lightsaber, and he isn't even force sensitive. there are a myriad of reason those movies are bad (like bringing dead characters back, lol) but they broke their own rules right out of the gate.

Agreed.
You see this in sci-fi a lot. When done well, the advanced technologies seem to be realistic and organically developed, and are part of the story.
A really good example is the "Red Mars" trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson, which is an excellent hard sci-fi series. There are certain advanced technologies that are enormous parts of the plot, but they seem both plausible and have well-supported back stories for how they were discovered and why, which integrates with major plot points.
BTW I highly recommend that series if you're into sci-fi.
I contrast that with a sci-fi fluff series that I got sick of after book three, where new technologies just somehow get invented right at the time their needed because some people are just super-smart and come up with it. It's the equivalent of OAM's description of "magic".

Sci-Fi is fine and when there's unexplained craziness, I'm okay with some of that. But when it's just chalked up to "whatever the story needs" = magic, I'm out.

Saw Chariots of Fire in the theatre. It was really boring. Nor is it a movie that people are clamoring to see now, so I think my initial impression stands up.
Raiders of the Lost Ark never had a chance for an Oscar. People liked it too much.

My original premise was the longevity of the series, in which the character had a major role. MacCleod fit that profile. It became which actors have been 100+ episode in 3 series, which makes the criteria clearer.

Friends was a favorite of mine at the time, probably because of cute girls that were about my same age. I find it to be a little dated these days, but I do think they did a decent job of satirizing the "I'm Italian" schtick with Joey's character. He was an Italian-American who did the worst Italian accent of any of the friends, among other things. I thought they handled it pretty well overall.
Let's see, how many episodes did Friends go, and did any of the actors go on to other long-running shows? Matt LeBlanc did one where he played himself, I think. And Courtney Cox was in Dirt and Cougartown but I don't think either were long-lived.
Then there was Matthew Perry in a short-lived Sorkin dramedy called Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, sort of a 30 Rock before 30 Rock and more edgy but less funny.

The very first time they were asking me about the show, I didn't understand. They were talking about a character named Zhayaaar OoooING. I finally figured out that they meant JR Ewing.
And then I cemented all stereotypes when I told them the true story about my friend from Dallas who had just gotten married at South Fork ranch. At that point, they were convinced that all Texans road horses to work, lived in vast ranches, and owned oil wells. I didn't disabuse them of this notion, it would have been cruel. :)

I think SNL would count if the actor was in a significant role. She was on for 6 straight years and did Weekend Update across from Dan Aykroyd. I'd allow it.
I wouldn't give it to an actor who had 1-2 seasons even though the show itself has had hundreds of episodes.
I am a little shocked that Third Rock went over 100 episodes though...

Most of my French friends and cousins have spent time in the US, but not all. And a group of retirees from there had a joint trip to the US a few years back. I did a wine tasting with them (blind) that was amusing, and some of them visited our house. The houses here generally don't have fences and they remarked on that and was it safe?
I said "We don't have fences, what we do have are guns."
They nodded as if that was a revelation. Their view of the US is heavily influenced by Hollywood.
I saw somewhere that more movies and shows are shot in Georgia these days than Hollywood. It is a noticeable business hereabouts, though down quite a bit during COVID.

Passage to India, High Road to China, really bad in my view. That Bill Murray movie set in Japan. Ugh.

I went to a college that was carved out of the middle of a corn field. If we wanted to see a movie, you had to drive 20 miles. One of our choices was a theatre with two screens, the one screen one of those where if you stood up in the movie, you shadow was put on the screen. Basically, we'd drive 20 miles and get pot luck to whatever is playing. As such, I saw "Children of the Corn". I know a lot of people like it, but certainly not my thing. The other movie I get stuck seeing that I remember to this day is "The Evil That Men Do". We thought "Charles Bronson, can't be bad, right?". Oh my, that was terrible.

Aside from the nudity that appealed to 14-year-old utee94, Porky's is a really bad movie that has not stood up well over time. And Big Lebowski is massively overrated IMO, I much prefer almost ANY Coen Brothers movie over that one. Raising Arizona is my favorite.
Caddy Shack on the other hand is still brilliant, and Blazing Saddles is legendary.
I'd have gone with Caddy Shack, Blazing Saddles, and maybe Fletch.

I actually think Step Brothers holds up as well as any Will Ferrell bit that has been driven into the ground. He basically plays the same character, put in different situations. I know a lot of guys have made a lot of money doing that, but his in particular seem like you could literally move all of the jokes from one movie to another, and they would essentially work just as well

That was my problem with the tv show. The movie (IMO) has enough dark humor that you almost forget how horrible the stuff that is happening is. The show has zero humor, and I just wound up hating everyone.

i agree mostly. if they're a main character in one of the movies, like hannibal lecter, then i'm fine including it. like hugo weaving's the main baddie in the first cap america movie, but not in rest, but i still consider him a major part of that series. but for an ancillary character i probably wouldn't.
i don't know the transformer movies either, just saw on imdb. i knew hopkins was in silence of the lambs and thor, so i looked to see if he might be in others.

I just watched "Big Trouble in Little China" for the first time. It was the exact quality I thought it would be, but it was way off the deep end as far as content, lol.
Was Kurt Russell the king of bad 80s movies?? 100% of them have the most cliched main character and incessant saxophone/synthesizer music throughout.
Was not expecting there to be a huge mystical/magical - almost SciFi element to that movie.

I like Giant. It was filmed just outside of Marfa and my dad was born and raised in neighboring Alpine, so that made it special for him and he passed that on to me. In the 70s there was still some framing for the set that remained and we went and visited it once.

It's not Casablanca or anything, but I watched it with the kids recently and they enjoyed it.
