Title: Good News VOL Fans, UT Has a New AD, According to the News Sentinel
Post by: gymvol on January 21, 2021, 01:57:09 PM

Looks as though Tennessee has finally had enough of mediocrity and the good old boys. According to the News Sentinel Danny White of UCF will be the new AD. He has been very successful as an AD and hired coaches who were winners.

University of Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman said she wanted Tennessee's next athletics director to have done the job before and have a track record for hiring successful head coaches (https://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/college/university-of-tennessee/football/2021/01/20/tennessee-football-coaching-candidates-athletics-director/4216721001/).

She has landed her target.

Tennessee will announce UCF athletics director Danny White as the replacement to Phillip Fulmer, USA TODAY reported Thursday (https://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/ncaaf/sec/2021/01/21/tennessee-hiring-central-floridas-danny-white-as-athletics-director/4245331001/), citing a source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the school had not yet announced the hire.

MEET DANNY WHITE: Here are 5 things we know about Vols' new athletics director  (https://www.knoxnews.com/story/sports/college/university-of-tennessee/football/2021/01/21/danny-white-tennessee-athletics-director-ucf/6656810002/)
White is the son of Duke AD Kevin White and brother of Florida Atlantic AD Brian White and Florida men's basketball coach Mike White.

Danny White has been at UCF since 2015 and previously was the athletics director at Buffalo.

While at Buffalo, White hired basketball coaches Bobby Hurley and Nate Oats. Both coaches parlayed their success at Buffalo into Power 5 jobs. Hurley is now at Arizona State and Oats has Alabama in the Top 25. He also hired football coach Lance Leipold, who has Buffalo football established as a premier MAC program. Leipold had won six NCAA Division III national titles but never had coached in Division I before White hired him.

At UCF, he hired football coach Scott Frost. When Frost departed for Nebraska, his alma mater, after going 13-0 in 2017, White hired Josh Heupel. The former Heisman Trophy runner-up at Oklahoma, Heupel is 28-8 through three seasons.

“I’m looking for someone who is currently an athletic director. Maybe they’ve done it twice. They’ve successfully hired coaches. They have built something," Plowman said Tuesday. "They haven’t just gone into a place that was always great and kept it great, but maybe somebody that took something from good to great."

I like it.

This feels like the University is finally attempting to get serious for a change.

And he couldn't have asked for a better football training ground than backing up Roger Staubach all those years in Dallas.

Let’s not forget he had to clean up many of Staubach’s failed drives as White was the punter

On paper, it looks like a good hire.  Given how quickly this hire was announced, it probably means that the administration knew that they were getting rid of Fulmer and Pruitt for a while.

I put this on another site yesterday:
___________________

I am sorry to say this…

but I have written off Tennessee football.
I have been a fan since childhood. I remember Karl Kremser’s (I think) FG being called "no good" against Oklahoma in the ’68 Orange Bowl. It broke my heart. I understand there were fans in the end zone that SWEAR the kick was good.
I been with the mighty Vols through the ups and downs.
Since the debacle against LSU in the SECCG (2001), it has been a lot more downs than ups.
I remember thinking we were poised to establish ourselves as the bellcow of the conference heading into the ’05 season.
Not exactly.
I remember the pain of ’08. And lots more since then.
But this program has now become a DISGRACE. It is a stain upon the contributions of the great players and traditions that are the reason the stadium with General Neyland’s name on it stands proudly beside the Tennessee River. All of them would be — and those alive I’m sure are — ashamed of what this program has descended to.
It is not anything that I’m interested in. Or wish to have anything to do with.
If someone comes along to turn things around, my devotion will be restored. Till then — screw ‘em.
Until yesterday, I would’ve said "I’ll stick to basketball".
And then a #6 team that I greatly overestimated goes out and lays a 25-pt.-loss egg against an undermanned UF team that has been beaten by four other teams.
Oh, yeah. It’s great to be a Tennessee Vol.
SMH.

Hopefully, this hire applies to the part in bold.
I'll wait and see.  While remaining cautiously optimistic.

I wonder if Roady thinks Fulmer really graciously retired for the good of the program/university?

That
Danny White also played for the Memphis Grizzlies of the World Football League, along with Czonka, Kick, and Warfield from the Miami Dolphins.   As a kid, I thought the WFL was pretty exciting, and Memphis had a good team.
