Kiss my ass, 2020.
OK, now that we're done with this shit show of a season, let's talk about what 2021 looks like.
First, we don't know who is all returning.
We do know LS Adam Bay is not coming back. He's going to the NFL, along with DE Loudermilk, SS Eric Burrell, and some others. Those three will be missed for sure. I'm pretty sure Cole Van Lanen is going to leave, even though he didn't show well this season.
Lots of seniors have the option of coming back (if asked to, of course) for a 5th, 6th, and one case, a 7th year in the program.
We know for sure some programs will come after Jim Leonhard with loads of cash, but I don't see him leaving Madison for another DC job. He is at home.
Chryst needs to take back the play calling, from Joe Rudolph, and allow Rudolph to solely work with the OL.
-
Will Mertz be returning?intersting to see if he can get into the groove again
-
Yeah, he's a RS freshman. Jack Coan is already in the portal.
-
Surprised Coan doesn't hang around unless he's guaranteed PT somewhere else.Maybe the writing is on the wall there though
-
Mertz and the incoming Hill are the future. Jack knows this.
Lots of teams could use him. He's a good QB.
-
JC has a decent deep arm doesn't he?

OK. He's a very competent game manager. I think Buffalo is a perfect fit, but they might have a QB. Will be interested in that market.

This is big news.

More good news. Fergy coming back.
"After a lot of self-reflection and talking with my family, I'm excited to announce that I have chosen to stay for my fifth year and play football at the University of Wisconsin. I believe my time at Wisconsin is not finished yet and also gives me the opportunity to graduate from one of the greatest universities. And for those keeping tabs, there will be one more year of #BarrysGrandson.

Well that's a big surprise.

Big loss here. Garret Rand is stepping away from football. Cole Van Lanen also not coming back, but he's going to try the draft.

It's a sign of my tortured soul that every time I read of a player making this kind of announcement, giving up on football, that I think: "good call, man."
And yet, here I am, on a college football fan site, cheering on college football. Sigh.
On Wisconsin.

There's a new coach in town.

Well now...
Sources: Colorado State planning to hire Wisconsin assistant to run offense (footballscoop.com) (https://footballscoop.com/news/sources-colorado-state-hiring-wisconsin-assistant-to-run-offense/)
If this is true, I'd like to see PC step in and be the QB coach. This would allow him to hire a dedicated DB coach.
-
Dammit.
Jim Leonhard is interviewing for the Packer DC opening. That would suck.
-
Matt LaFleur (https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1AVFC_enUS763US763&sxsrf=ALeKk03ZAe2M33f1d0jUnK5HmfZ9JzmXlg:1612289493595&q=Matt+LaFleur&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgVuLSz9U3yLEoNEkxeMRoyi3w8sc9YSmdSWtOXmNU4-IKzsgvd80rySypFJLgYoOy-KR4uJC08Sxi5fFNLClR8El0y0ktLQIAppFYcFUAAAA) will prolly snatch him up

has a good life and enough money

From what I gather Rodgers isn't very fond of Lafleur. In which case this would be a prudent move
-
Before MSU announced they were only considering coaches with head coaching experience, I was hoping they'd interview him last year.
-

To be honest, if he left, I bet they’d replace him with the promise that if things went sideways, he could be brought back as co-DC at some point quickly.

Could be a little Narduzzi there
-
So, UW lost QB coach Budmayr to Colorado State, where he will be the OC.
Rather than replace him, PC hired a new coach for DB's, which will free up Leonhard to solely be the DC.
PC will coach the QB's (I like this) and call plays (I like this more).
This is a very solid hire, and it's the direction I'd hope they would go.

Oh,gosh let's see I work in a bakery/brewery but I don't like yeast - makes sense
-
Weird man. Very weird.
-
That was directed at GA,wants to coach but basically not recruit was what i took away from that.Kind of goes with the territory in other words
-
He did not understand how to recruit at Wisconsin. Period. He had commits that couldn't get into school. He wanted JUCO players.
He also started to abandon in-state kids while trying to recruit OOS kids with no chance of admission. This pissed of the WI HS coaches.
He knew he had to go, and he did.

He was so odd. A lot of folks said he was in many ways nicer to deal with than Bret, but then he'd have these weird moments where he just acted not only strange, but not normal coach strange (coaches are so strange).
The recruiting, in addition to the JUCO and other stuff, was also odd. They had a ridiculous run of OL injuries in his classes, Sheehy, Dixon, Jamerson, Deiter, Tindal, Benzschawel, Edwards, Dietzen, Sagapolu, Edwards, Orr, Baun were good gets. I forgot he got a four-star WR who quit because he was homesick, and his HS coach just crushed him in print. Good times.

I always like to see this

Long ways off, but still good to see.
This year has Notre Dame, Army and EMU (hate them).
2022 has WSU
2023 has WSU (away) and Buffalo
2024 has Bama and WMU
2025 has Bama (away)
2026 has Pitt
2027 has Pitt (away)
2028 has Utah
2029 has UCLA (away)
2030 has UCLA
2031 has VT (away)
2032 has VT
2033 has Utah (away)

MSU strikes again?
Sounds like MSU has hired UW's recruiting coordinator for the same position. Probably a fat raise, like Gilmore.
FU, Tucker.

If Wisconsin is losing people to lateral moves, wouldn't that suggest maybe Wisconsin isn't taking good enough care of their people?
-
Husker beat writer suggested that the new AD would boost salaries
blamed the King for keeping salaries low
-
Tucker has a blank check for every hire he makes.
Gilmore was making $275K at UW.
MSU is paying him $500K+.
That doesn't go over in Madison, with a chancellor who hates athletics.

I don't think $500K is the market rate for a WR coach.
-
We're talking about assistant coach / adjunct position salaries...
When Matt Painter almost left Purdue to go to Mizzou, it wasn't about a raise for himself. It was about making sure he had the budget he needed for assistant coaches and making sure that the AD had a commitment to the other necessary expenditures to be able to commit to a winning program. He had a threadbare assistant coach budget, and that got fixed.
Sounds like Chryst needs to advocate up the chain to be able to pay HIS people better.
-
More Les Miles trickle down.
Has already resulted in some scrambling at UM, MSU and now UW very late in the game
-
He has done that already. Alvarez is known to be frugal, but it's really not his call in Madison.
It's these people who have all the control and make the budget decisions:
Athletic Board Members | Wisconsin Badgers (uwbadgers.com) (https://uwbadgers.com/sports/2015/08/21/GEN_20140101534.aspx)
-
as long as the Badgers are still winning, not much will change, I suppose
-
All I'm saying is that the blame isn't with MSU.
If my company's biggest competitor offered me my same job at nearly double my current pay, I'd leave in a second. And they wouldn't be the ones "at fault" in me leaving, it would be my own employer for not offering me a competitive package.
-
I was being sarcastic with my post. MSU has the right to hire anyone who will work there.
-
I don't think $500K is the market rate for a WR coach.
He’s the highest paid TE coach in the country now, discounting guys with coordinator titles.
-
he's not getting that salary for his work with TEs
the director of player personnel very well may be more valuable than a coordinator
-
So UW is not paying market rates. Got it.
So, they’re sixth in the conference in total assistant pay, and that is gonna be depressed a little since the current setup discourages a big-time OC.
The teams ahead of them are OSU, Mich (no shame there), MSU (throwing around money and 13th nationally in staff pay), Iowa (not sure there), Nebraska (less than $13k ahead of UW).
The Badgers’ total is dragged down by two young guys they liked that were making starter money and a coach who might still be getting NFL residuals. They also have no non-coordinators over $450k, which might be an issue.

Wisconsin has reportedly found its new athletic director, and it will be an internal hire for the department.
Tuesday, ESPN Milwaukee reported that Chris McIntosh is expected to be named the next athletic director at Wisconsin. A press conference is reportedly coming on Wednesday, though a time was not reported.
-
That would be my choice. He's been groomed for some time now.

But can he coach Rose Bowls if needed?
-
The King would come back for that. Of course, if PC keeps things on track, he'll never leave.

MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin took a major step in addressing its inexperience in the backfield, as former Clemson tailback Chez Mellusi announced he is transferring to the Badgers program.
Mellusi, who was on campus Tuesday, is eligible immediately with the NCAA granting a one-time transfer exemption, allowing students to switch schools without having to sit out a season. The rule comes at a critical time for Wisconsin, which is slated to have seven scholarship running backs on its fall roster with a combined 73 carries.
-
so, now 8 backs with ships?
-
Yes, including fullbacks.
-
that's right
Frost doesn't believe in them.
although he got many great blocks from Joel Makovicka and Brian Schuster back in his playing daze

What a crock o' shit. This stuff is getting out of hand.
“Students and coaches are complaining. We’ve seen a mass exodus of Black coaches.
McIntosh and Barry have done this together,” Anthony said.
PC has lost 3 black coaches. He replaced them with... 3 black coaches. Gard has lost 2 black coaches. He replaced them with... 2 black coaches.
I'd like to see a quote by a student complaining. Oh wait. They always complain. About EVERYTHING.
-

Yep, they're residents of our great land, where complaining is the pastime.
-
why can't they replace coaches with the best qualified coaches why does our society have to label the man/woman

Exactly my point. I'm tired of this stuff.
That guy in the article is doing nothing positive here. He's stirring a pot that is already on fire. Why??

I guess he's always has some issues upstairs, but man this is a deeply horrendous story if true.

Jeez. Terrible stuff.
And to think in a week or so his jersey was gonna be in the countdown. Not anymore.
-
OK, so...
It's clear that Braelon Allen is the best RB in the room in Madison. Now, we need to wait and see if he becomes the starter - as he should.
The kid should be playing his senior season in HS right now. He's 17. Re-classified from a 2022 recruit to 2021.
-
I'd RS unless the RB stable is woefully thin.Be a shock stepping up in class with a squad that has not been up to UW standards
-
Jalen Berger kicked off the team
-
I'd like to know what happened with Berger. Lots of speculation out there, but nothing I'd post here.
He looked pretty good as a true frosh last season. He didn't even get a carry against Illinois. A walk-on got carries.
Something is wrong.
And the above talk about all of those RB's in the room... Out the window. Three have been dismissed since the season started.
-
My biggest surprise is Mertz.
My own fault/ just had high expectations for him based on his HS film and how he looked early. He will probably just be a late bloomer and turn out to be really good.
-

Agree. He'll still be the starter next year and will tear up the Big Ten.
-
Multiple people are now saying Berger missed meetings, team workouts and wasn't practicing particularly well.
Someone will take a chance on the former 4*.
The guy who recruited him is at Kentucky now (Settle). And there is always home (Rutgers).

For his sake, I hope this shocks him into getting on track. If my team‘s loss becomes a good life lesson for a young person, there is something to be said for that.
also, if the big freshman wants to round into being a capable running back, that would be good. It sounds like he might be missing a few of those instinctual elements, but we shall see.
-
Allen will be really good, eventually. Again, he should be playing out his senior season in HS right now.
-
Now for some really great news:
UW Chancellor Rebecca Blank has accepted the President job at Northwestern.
Don't let the door hit you in the ass.

I hate it when you get all teary eyed and nostalgic, let it go already

Apparently she will depart as the longest tenured person to ever hold the position.
I bet she is replaced by someone people also strongly dislike, as that position is hardly ever popular.
-
Donna Shalala and David Ward were well liked.
I think Ward's tenure was longer than Becky's. Remember, he came back for two years after Martin left.
I have his autograph on sheepskin.

Lol no.
Graham Mertz is maybe just maybe, bad at playing football. QB's don't just magically get a feel for the pocket, have disciplined footwork under pressure, and become accurate passers who can throw with touch and change ball speeds on throws.
Those are all things they are just born with imo. They either have it or they don't. And I honestly don't think Mertz has any of it.
He's probably a case of a guy with plus size for the position (6'3+) and big arm strength who looked great in t-shirts and shorts in 7-on-7's and dominated weak competition in middle of nowhere Kansas in a shotgun "gimmicky" offense.
QB is hardest position for those recruiting services to rank. Lot of times anyone that's 6'3+, 205+ plus that can run a little bit and has high level arm strength is basically auto-ranked a 4*. Look at Joe Milton. No way he should've been a 4*. The sites felt his upside was so high because of his size and arm strength- they just ranked him a top 250 player and 4* - even though he was you know- kinda bad at actually playing football.
-
He looked great 2 seasons ago granted in limited audition and good early last year. That doesn't mean he'll sprout into Johnny U but still has a punchers chance to respectability
-
Wisconsin controls their own destiny. Win out and win the West. Badgers’ defense is good enough.
-
They play at Purdue next. If the Boilers play like they did yesterday, UW will be lucky to even score.
-
Senior C Kayden Lyles hits the portal. The former 4* was passed up by a 4* freshman this year.
