It's not even August yet, and would anyone bet that any of the 10 teams in the playoffs now won't get in?
Could be a lackluster final two months. Really the only drama might be which team in the AL East and Central wins the division and which gets the Wildcard.
Astros will be the 1 seed
Dodgers will be the 1 in the NL, face the Diamondbacks-Rockies winner, with Cubs-Nats in the other series.
-
RIP Darren Daulton and Don Baylor. Both had long battles with various cancers.
Baylor managed to have some really good timing (in terms of joining winning clubs down the stretch). master of getting plunked too.
I just noticed, he managed to have 680 plate appearances in 1982 without taking the field once.
-
This is one helluva season for the Dodgers. 1988 was a looooong time ago, but with the crapshoot that is the postseason, I'm not confident LA is going to win the World Series.

Of course then the Royals immediately go in the crapper and the 2nd AL Wildcard spot is wide open. I think everyone but Detroit, Chicago and Oakland is within 4 games now.
-
Halos only 2 games back!

The Angels have reached a notable, although meaningless, moment.
They are currently sitting in the second wild card spot, after running their winning streak to five games with a come-from-behind, 6-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night.
“It gives us a little taste of what’s left to come,” Jesse Chavez said.
The Angels have taken the first three games of this series against the team that was leading the race for the second wild card when it began. The Mariners were since passed by the Minnesota Twins, who also lost on Saturday to allow the Angels to pass them both.
At 60-58, the Angels still have 44 games to play, which is why being in playoff position now means little.
Asked if there was any small significance to draw from the standings now, Manager Mike Scioscia said flatly: “No. Nope. We’ve got a game tomorrow.”
-
Kudos to LAA for staying in it, largely without their 9-10 win stud. Idk if it was sample size, luck, schedule, or genuine play, but it's cool for them.
-
God bless the second Wildcard for ensuring a very mediocre AL team will get in
-
and a very mediocre NL team
-
2nd wildcard sucks. Just like the first wildcard. 2nd-place teams winning the World Series - how 'bout that for 'everyone gets a trophy'?
-
and a very mediocre NL team
The 2nd Wildcard team in the NL is going to likely be better than the NL Central champ, and likely a whole lot better than either AL wildcard team.
-
5 or 6 games better if the season ended today
that's a whole lot better?
or you think those NL wildcards are going to play much better ball before the end of the season?
-
5 or 6 games is a pretty decent margin. The Tigers suck, and at 6 games better, they'd be in the Wildcard.
They have the 5th and 6th best record in all of baseball right now. So if they are mediocre, then basically everyone is mediocre.
IMO there are 7 good teams this year. 5 of the 6 division leaders (Cubs excluded) and both NL wildcards.
But baseball playoffs are funny, so whoever wins the NL Central or the AL Wildcard has as good a shot as the Dodgers to win it all

It's scary how good the Dodgers are ... :c029:

50 games over .500 !!!!!!

It's scary how good the Dodgers are ... :c029:
Like 2001 Mariners good?
-
The Mariners have an Aussie doing color on their radio broadcast, which is more disorienting than you would think
-
Like 2001 Mariners good?
Probably not quite as good as 2001 Seattle
- LA would have to continue if not exceed its current rate of dominance to approach the 116-win realm
That said, the Dodgers have been sooooooooo much better than the rest of the league that the World Series is likely theirs to lose and if they pull what the 73-9 Warriors did 2 seasons ago, I think everyone would be stunned.
Of course, I could be wrong but I wanna say that the MLB team that has the best record during the regular season usually does not win the championship
- squads that have clinched division titles or playoff appearances often rest players (which can lead to rust) while teams that had to be on a red-hot winning streak just to qualify for the postseason (e.g. Wildcards) can and often bite unsuspecting favorites in the ass
- case in point, that Mariner team fell to the Yankees in the ALCS
-
Probably not quite as good as 2001 Seattle
- case in point, that Mariner team fell to the Yankees in the ALCS
That was the point. MLB playoffs aren't the NBA playoffs
-
Off memory, only 5 clubs with the best regular season record have won the World Series in the Wild Card era (since '95).
1998 Yankees
2007 Red Sox
2009 Yankees
2013 Red Sox
2016 Cubs
Losing in the WS were
1995 Indians
1999 Braves
2003 Yankees
2004 Cardinals
2013 Cardinals
11 Teams lost in the LDS, don't have me guess, what the heck, Cardinals, Angels, Nats, Phillies, Mariners, Angels again, Yankees, Yankees again, A's, Braves, Giants and the Indians I'm pretty sure in 96.
-
Verlander continues to pitch well enough that it's not a bad contract, it's just a contract few teams can afford.
Question is if Houston is one of those teams.
-
You think he'd make it through waivers?

Interesting take on how Dave Kingman's 37 home runs in 1976 could be the most impressive mark of all time.

Royals have been shutout for 43 consecutive innings. Longest streak since the mound was lowered.
That was a record I didn't expect to see broken ever.

As a White Sox fan, I am starting to feel like a Cub fan. Wait 'til next year!

Tigers trade Justin Upton to the Angels for mid-level prospect SP Spencer Long, and a PTBNL.
Once the Tigers decided to enter a rebuild, and Upton performed well enough that he wasn't going to cost himself money, he informed the team he was going to use his opt out after the year.
So they got something for a month of Upton, once they are long out of it. I'll take it.

And correspondingly the Angels move Maybin to the Astros, which seems like an odd move.

Why in the hell didn't the Angels (or somebody) do that trade 2 months ago?!?
-
Why in the hell didn't the Angels (or somebody) do that trade 2 months ago?!?
He wasn't showing his hand regarding his opt out until right now. The return on a rental vs. team control for 4 years on a productive player vs. 4 years of a bad contract is very different.
Hell most Tigers fans were simply hoping he'd have a good enough season to opt out.
Now it sounds like Verlander to Astros was a done deal and the Astros pulled out last minute. Cubs prepared to go all in on him over the winter. Some light rumors of him to the Dodgers for Verdugo, which I don't get from LAs perspective, unless Kershaw isn't going to be healthy.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- On a night when Mike Trout twice got thrown out at the plate, the Los Angeles Angels still found a way to score big in the standings.
Pinch-hitter Ben Revere lined a go-ahead single in the 10th inning that diving left fielder Matt Joyce just missed, and the Angels took over the second AL wild-card spot by beating the Oakland Athletics 8-7 on Tuesday night.
The Angels moved a half-game ahead of Minnesota, which lost at Tampa Bay. The Angels are five games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2015 season.
-
LOS ANGELES -- The NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers lost their 10th straight game for their worst skid in 25 years, routed by Mark Reynolds and the Colorado Rockies 8-1 Sunday.
-
Verdugo hit his first career HR.
I've got to assume no 1st place team has ever lost 10 straight. And if they had, I guarantee they weren't still 9 games clear of the next team.
-
Particularly when that team is coming off a franchise record winning streak
-
On August 25, the Indians were 19.5 GB of LA for the best record in baseball.
Now they are 4.
So they've closed the gap by 15.5 games in 17 days.

It completely sucks. I have a few meetings I cannot cancel today and are the only reason I won't be on the corner of Ontario & Carnegie.

It is the free game of the day on mlb.tv. I'll be listening at a minimum.
It is fun to look at the 1916 season (in which they won 26 in a row, including the tie in the middle which is not an official game). The Giants won all 26 games at home. Keep in mind they routinely had eternal home stands and road trips, during Train travel era. The Giants also had a 17 game streak early in the year and it was surrounded by a lot of losing spans of 10/12, 8/9, etc. The Giants finished in 4th that year in the NL. 86-66, they never led the League for a single day.

That's 21.

Royals are up next, followed by possible record breaking game vs Angels.
I'm pulling for 26 (at least)

26 would be nice, if for no other reason that getting that streak with the tie off of the books.

Yesterday was the 6th time since 2010 the Tigers had a no hit bid broken up in the 9th inning.
No other team with more than 3.
-
Dave Stieb knows how it feels.
-
Based on FiveThirtyEight's playoff projections, with still 2 weeks left, the teams currently in the postseason right now all have a 69% or better shot of making it, and all but the Twins are north of 86%.
Of the teams out, only the Angels (25.5%) and Brewers (11.1%) have a greater that 5% chance of getting in.

Going to the Pirates' home finale tonight. I think this is only the 2nd baseball game after Labor Day I've ever been to. Team was a disappointment this year, and it's over. Nobody wants to fully admit it, but with a friendly team option for next year, McCutchen is pretty good trade bait in the offseason, so might be his final home game. But it's not like he's retiring or actually a free agent, so he can't really acknowledge the crowd without being like "yeah, they're trading me."

He had an incredible game last night with the slam and 8 RBI's. If you heard Hurdle's comments after and the fact that Cutch took a curtain call and they lifted him in the 7th as a way to let him run off the field, I believe 1) He isn't playing tonight and 2) He'll never step foot on PNC's field again as a Pirate.
Sad....truly sad the way this organization operates. Is he Cutch 2012? Obviously not. But he's definitely worth his industry standard pricing, but of course they'll never pay him that.
Should be an interesting couple of years of PBC baseball, as the fans truly revolt against Nutting and this now-extended management.
-
He had a great game last night. I attended his first 3hr game at PNC when he was a rookie. Great guy to watch. I think he does get dealt though.

I saw the stats, didn't realize the curtain call and getting lifted. I assumed he was gone, but yeah, I doubt he plays tonight now. Bummer

JV pitching this afternoon on ESPN. I didn't realize he had been even more dominant in Houston than he was his last few months in Detroit

So by quick glance only 3 things still to be decided, and two are all but sealed:
1.) Can the Brewers overtake the Rockies for the 2nd NL Wildcard? (2.5 GB)
2.) Can the Yankees catch the Red Sox for the AL East title? (3 GB)
3.) Will the Indians or Astros get home field in the AL? (Indians by 1)
-
The BrewCrew is out of gas. Nelson going down really put them in a tough spot and it has caught up with them. Valiant effort for a club many expected to lose 85+ games.
-
I think everything wrapped up tonight. Rockies get wildcard, Red Sox win AL East, Tribe get home field.
-
Disgusting defense today by the Crew. Sun embarrassed the IF. Pen does the rest. I turned those first round NCAA wins and let them ride into some nice o/u bets on the NL central this year. I hit all four bets on the Reds, Pirates, Brewers and Cubs.

That was a lot of fun (NYY v CLE). So many likable players, great high leverage situations. Great ABs, wild throws. Amazing plays. Thank God it was a 5pm est start.

Hopefully the Indians can continue their trend of playing well on Indigenous People's Day.

I will make her shower when she gets home.

I think rain may interfere with one or more of these games today.

Devers with an inside the park HR to cut it to 1 in the 9th. If it had already been a 1 run game, that would be a play youd see replayed forever
-
Good to see Houston win
-
Bill Murray the bozo needs to vanish.
-
No shit.
-
If NY loses this series in 5 how large does that 4 run Girardi gaff in Game 2 loom?
-
Wow, a couple of 9th inning fielding gaffs by Jackson and Lindor may have put this one on ice.
He'll of an AB there from Gardner to see about 12 pitches before driving in a pair of insurance runs.
-
Really thought Astros-Indians and Nationals-Dodgers would have made for the best pair of LCSs in a while. Oh well
-
My Indians lost last night. What makes me sad about it is that while they might be competitive next year the window is closing quickly. The reality for a small-market team is that the best you can reasonably hope for is to be a serious contender for about a 2-4 year window once every decade or so. If you don't have the payroll of the Dodgers/Yankess/Red Sox then you have to build a team from the farm system and that takes about 10 years. For Cleveland specifically:
- They had a great run from 1995-2001 where they went to the playoffs six times in seven years. Realistically though they lost in the ALDS in 1999 and 2001. They were only a true contender in the mid-to-late 1990's when they went to two World Series and an additional ALCS.
- They were a serious contender in 2007 when the lost the ALCS in seven.
- They were a serious contender in 2016 and 2017 when they lost a World Series in seven and an ALDS in five.
Unless they can keep this going next year, it will probably be at least 10 years before the Indians are relevant again.
Playoff teams:
- The Colorado Rockies are in the country's 17th largest media market and have the MLB's 16th highest payroll. They were eliminated in the NL wildcard game.
- The Minnesota Twins are in the country's 15th largest media market and have the MLB's 22nd highest payroll. They were eliminated in the AL wildcard game.
- The Arizona Diamondbacks are in the country's 11th largest media market and have the MLB's 26th highest payroll. They were eliminated in the NLDS.
- The Boston Red Sox are in the country's 10th largest media market and have the MLB's 3rd highest payroll. They were eliminated in the ALDS.
- The Cleveland Indians are in the country's 19th largest media market and have the MLB's 17th highest payroll. They were eliminated in the ALDS.
- The Washington Nationals are in the country's 6th largest media market and have the MLB's 9th highest payroll. They are tied 2-2 in the NLDS.
- The Chicago Cubs are in the country's 3rd largest media market and have the MLB's 8th highest payroll. They are tied 2-2 in the NLDS.
- The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the country's 2nd largest media market and have the MLB's highest payroll. They are in the NLDS.
- The Houston Astros are in the country's 7th largest media market and have the MLB's 18th highest payroll. They are in the ALCS.
- The New York Yankees are in the country's largest media market and have the MLB's 2nd highest payroll. They are in the ALCS.
Bottom line, six of the seven teams that made it to a Divisional Series are located in one of the 11 largest media markets in the country. The Indians located in the 19th largest media market were the lone exception.
The three teams that have clinched a spot in an LCS are located in largest, second largest, and seventh largest media markets in the country and two still contending for the fourth spot are located in the third and sixth largest media markets.
-
So looks like Tigers set to hire Gardenhire, which is very meh.
But I guess if you have a young team, still rebuilding, who won't sniff the playoffs for at least a few years, there's no risk at Gardenhire gagging it away in the postseason as he usually did.
-
I knew I wouldn't feel confident until LA won a road game in the NLCS. I guess we're in as good a spot as is reasonable - up 3-1 with Kershaw set to pitch.
The MLB brass has to be salivating for a Yankees-Dodgers WS, right?
-

I'm not a cubs fan but, I hate the Dodgers
-
Alright big strike out Rondon, now a ground ball gets you out of...derp
-
If it is NY v LA, it may be the 12 WS between the two but it would be the first one since '81. That's the first WS I have actual memories watching. I'm sure I was in front of the TV for '80 (Phils/Royals), my older brother says so but I can't recall anything.
-
I'm not a cubs fan but, I hate the Dodgers
Better than the angels.
-
Steve Garvey was never on the Angel's roster
-
Steve Garvey was never on the Angel's roster
While I may join your loathing of Garvey, why must the Dodgers wear that noose around their neck for all of these years? Are the Padres equally cast with the 'G' letter?
-
why not? didn't like Davey Lopes, or Dusty Baker or steve yeager
Rick Monday did a great thing for the flag, but thought he was grossly over rated
and yes, the Padres are tainted
-
You forgot Ron Cey he was a major dbag on those LA teams. I didn't like them either. Lasorda made me dislike the Dodgers til about 10 yrs ago. Loved listening to Scully.
Rick Monday, while I associate him as a dodger was actually a cub when he saved the flag at Dodger stadium. That doesn't make me cheer for the Cubs.
-
Ick, I missed the Astros had ole Ground Chuck, Charlie Morton, lined up for Game 7.
-
On the other hand, anybody on short rest never really pans out, though CC is lights out following a Yankee loss which may simply be luck. Yankees should have a bullpen edge tonight.
-

Yeah, I don't think they have a choice. Yanks have a bullpen edge over basically everyone, and the way the Astros pen has been lately, for sure
-
The throw to the plate, tag, and putout was easily one of the greatest defensive putouts I've ever seen in my life. Congratulations to Houston.
-
yes sir, Go Stros!

yup, the penguin was annoying as hell
and Monday being a Cub didn't help his cause
Scully one of the best of all-time
-
I'd rather be playing the less-talented Yankees in the WS, but whatever. I'm nervous, lol.
It's reeeally weird playing what had been an NL team for nearly my whole life in the WS now. Hell, imagine if it was HOU-MIL, lol.
-
9:20 and it's the bottom of the 5th? I don't miss Maddon vs. Francona
-
Both pitchers are dealin'. Announcers talking about Kershaw's efficiency, but Keuchel has a lower pitch count. 11 K and 2 hits given up by Kershaw....he's too good.
LA has plenty of lefty bats when HOU dips into its pen.
-
Good rhythm tonight for both guys. Dallas looked like he wasn't fooling anybody early, but then really started to look sharp. Turner is hitting everybody. For a minute I thought we were about to see a 'walk less' World Series game, the first since G1 of '83.
-
These 4-second commercials for Wendy's and T-Mobil are reeeeeally necessary.
-
I love thinking about these brands that I have never come into contact with before, and likely never will (T Mobile).
-
...and we miss Jansen's first pitch....wtf
Springer is a good, young player. But against elite pitching, he's a strikeout bitch.
-

I seem to have very faint memories of Royals/Phillies. My lasting memory of the 81 series is Goose Gossage hitting Ron Cey in the head. As a 5 year old watching I legit thought he killed Cey.
-
Wow, thought that was a no doubter from Bellinger
-
That game was tons of fun. As usual, baseball showing you things you've never seen in your life. A ball off the brim of the hat saves a run. An umpire nearly takes one in the junk on an errant pick off play and that holds a runner at 2nd. The HR derby in extras. Roberts gonna take some heat for yanking Hill w/o letting him at least go out in the 5th.
-
So the Yankees weren't supposed to compete til 2018 or 2019. They overachieved this year, beat the hottest team in the AL, were within 1 game of the World Series, but blew a 3-2 lead, and Girardi is out.
Those dumb asses don't deserve him
-
Wonder of there is/Was mutuality over this decision. A couple years ago, it was believed he would leave.
-
I don't understand it unless Girardi wanted out
-
...and we miss Jansen's first pitch....wtf
Springer is a good, young player. But against elite pitching, he's a strikeout bitch.
hah, obviously McCarthy is NOT among the elite
-
Precisely.
Roberts should be taking zero heat. You have a 2-run lead when you bring Jansen in. You take that potential win percentage, every time. Doesn't matter how you got there, the pieces were in place for a win 90-some% of the time.
Last night showed what prevents it from being 100%. Shrug.
-
and then there's the factor that the World Series is different than the reg season and that the Stro hitters are different than the NL hitters the Dodgers faced in the reg season
-
Now Manfred might have a slight controversy
-
Kersh is all over the place. Bellinger picked him up, though.
-
To think the Dodgers attempted a SAC bunt with the cleanup hitter and a guy on 2B in this game and no outs.
-
a - yes, that was dumb
b - Hernandez is a cleanup hitter vs lefties only, otherwise he's an 8-hole type
Any of you old bastages want to lend me some heart meds? This is rough.
-
Holy moly. Hard to relay to others what the hell happened in this game. I'm so tired.
-
Dodgers bull pen was lights out vs the NL, but the Stros have the BATS!!!
-
Well that is all I wanted to see. A tight game 6 to give us a 7. Will be fun to speculate what Roberts' plan is as far as the bullpen goes. Jansen done? Seems inevitable we'll see Kershaw for two innings in a tight game. McCullers is throwing long toss on the field right now for Houston.
-
Darvish - Kershaw - Jansen
-
gotta luv a game 7
-
...and we miss Jansen's first pitch....wtf
Springer is a good, young player. But against elite pitching, he's a strikeout bitch.
ya really shouldn't type that kinda stuff out loud
-
ya really shouldn't type that kinda stuff out loud
Postseason Darvish is about as far from elite pitching as it gets
-
Darvish dealt in the earlier rounds though. Here....not too good.
-
Stros throwing some leather

Any one of us could've hit Darvish in his WS starts. Garbage. Springer is having a great WS, but I stand by my statement.
As for the Dodgers, down 5-0 and now 0-7 with RISP.....they're done. Might as well take 3 ambien and jerk off.....

I guess all 5 HRs were off crap pitchers
Dodgers were lucky as hell to get the the WS with arms like that
but, that wouldn't surprise me. I'll always stand by the statement that the Dodgers suck

shoot fire: did I type that out loud?!?!?!?

Heh, Charlie Morton. Unbelievable.
Love to see a team built like that win it, and would love to get the feelings from Pirates ownership

Alan Trammell and Jack Morris into the HOF.
Gut feel was that Morris was more deserving, but honestly his induction is a little surprising, while Trammell, who was my first favorite Tiger, was long overdue.

This is a new veterans committee (I don't think the public really knows exactly who is on this new vet com.) I was very pleased to see Alan make it, well deserved. We can still hope Lou Whitaker gets a shot. I guess Ted Simmons was a vote short. :c002: . Bobby Grich another guy I wish would get proper consideration.
I was never a Morris for HOF guy, but if was somehow a if Trammell is in, then so his Morris, I'm ok with it.
