https://www.cnbc.com/2017/12/14/disney-to-buy-21st-century-fox-assets.html
$66.1 billion dollar deal. They are buying most of 21st Century Fox's assets and acquiring most of it's debt.
Hooray for monopolies! Hopefully the gov't blocks this merger. There are anti-trust laws on the books for good reason.
-
I think there are enough competitors in the marketplace for this to avoid being seriously challenged.
Selfishly, I like it because it most likely brings the rights to the X-Men under Disney's control, so we can finally get some X-Men/Avengers crossover movies. Giddyup!

Enough competitors in the market place? Lol. There are like 3 competitors in the marketplace, if Disney buys them out there will be like 2.
Gov't is trying to block the AT&T and Time Warner merger. I'll bet they try to block this one too. At least I hope they do. They failed miserably under the previous administration when Comcast bought NBCUniversal.
Marvel could easily just buy back the film rights from 21st Century Fox without Disney having to acquire most of that entire company. And it'd be a heck of a lot cheaper than 66.1 billion dollars.

The simpson's have been spot on lately.... first predicting Trump, now predicting this..

For movie studios, Disney, 20th Century Fox, Sony, Universal, Paramount, and Warner Bros. were all separate last time I checked into any of this. So there'd be 5 instead of 6. That's certainly a change to the Herfindahl index, but there are plenty of industries with that few players that don't invite government interference.
And no, I'm not suggesting Disney buy Fox solely for the rights to the X-Men. It actually seems they're most interested in the TV and TV distribution aspects of Fox. I'm just selfishly interested in the possibility of seeing X-Men and Avengers together, that would be awesome.
-
What's the anti-trust argument going to be on this? Over distribution, or content? Or both? I think certain people (and administrations) look at anti-trust matters through a snapshot in time, w/o regard to the future. The lens they apply their analysis through is stunted. We all realize that movie attendance is at a 25 year low, right? "over the top" media is growing like gangbusters. From a 'studio release' standpoint, even combining #s, that marginally outpaces either Universal or Sony in terms of annual releases over the past 1, 3, 5 yr periods. I'm not seeing the case against this kind of a merger.
I love bringing up the FTC's attempts to block Whole Foods from acquiring Wild Oats. Of course now, a decade later this is patently hilarious to everybody, but back then, the government, and other interest groups were serious. It was going to be organic food monopoly of the worst kind. Nevermind Whole Foods controlled less than 2% of grocery sales, and they weren't the only places offering organic food.

Disney is pretty schlock.
Bland, safe movies written and produced by 1,000s of corporate stiffs.

yeah, kinda with you.
they pretty much ruined Star Wars with that blah JJ Abrams Force Awakens sequel. Sounds like this next one just brings more questions and fewer answers.
I feel like those Marvel movies were better before Disney bought Marvel. Honestly, kinda feel like Robert Downey Jr carried all those movies. Like there was almost no point in seeing them if not for him. He's really just that gifted of an actor that he can make anything interesting. I even finished watching that terrible movie Due Date because of him.

Well, at least the Fox network, FS1/FS2, and BTN will be kept out of Disney's hands--they're being spun off into a separate company.
Disney [as owners of ESPN] would have potentially caused a major problem in monopolizing sports content if they'd gotten their hands on those.
-
Doesn't BTN ownership revert to 100 percent Big Ten ownership in 2025 or something? I thought I read that a while back.

Yeah, completely agree with you on this. I was glad to see that those particular Fox properties weren't included.
-
That sounds familiar to me too.
I was nervous about this purchase until I was able to confirm BTN wasn't part of the deal.

I guess this is a place for Disney/ABC news

I think the BTN has the option to buy back the %50 FOX invested in, they just don't get ownership willy nilly.

The Last Jedi was awesome

I didn't like it. I loved Mark Hamill in it though. That was cool to see Luke Skywalker again. But yeah, I really didn't like that movie. It's easily better than the ones Lucas made in the early 2000s though, so there's that going for it. But that's not saying much because those prequel movies with Hayden Christensen were terrible. So. So. So. Terrible.

I'd like to see the terms if anyone can find them.

It's very divisive. Seems like I'm on an island by thinking it's pretty good.
The more I read, the more I liked it though. I certainly need to give it a second viewing.

i liked it, but it has issues (which all of them do, but still). as a movie, it was really good. as a part of star wars, there's several things i didn't like.
i'm taking my daughter sometime this week, so i'll get a second look at it.
i love going to movies on opening night just for the excitement around it, but i loathe actually being in the theater with that many people. especially when they're cheering and talking and yelling at the movie. one guy (thankfully not in front of me) kept standing up cheering and fist pumping in every major scene. i'd have been pissed if i was behind him.

what's our policy on spoilers? would love to discuss but don't want to ruin anything. do we want a thread of its own?
@Drew4UTk (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1) is there a hide/spoilers function here?
-
Yes please discuss on a separate thread. I'm interested in Disney/Fox buyout discussions, but don't want to see talk of The Last Jedi until I've had a chance to see it (which will be in 5 days on Christmas Eve).
Thank you for your support. :)

I almost never go to the movies.
I can't get past what might have happened on the seat before I got there.
The un-showered and stinky is a deterrent for me, along with the many forms of kid germs/snots/spit.
But yeah, enjoy that.

i'll look about installing a spoilers thingy, but it will be at the first of the year before i can.
-
F it Drew. We're close to the offseason and everything goes off the rails. That's a good thing.

I don't worry too much about that. I still have kids in elementary school, the funk they bring home pretty much immunizes me to movie theater germs.
I probably go to see movies at the theater maybe 4x per year. I like to see the really big movies there, things like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and most of the superhero/comic book movies. And there are usually only 3-4 of those that will come out in a year. Everything else, I can wait for video.
-
If I do go, and it's generally forced by you-know-who, I bring Clorox wipes. The place has to have leather or it's no-go for me.

yessir- if i'm going to install something new on the site, i'm going to do it while i can watch if it impacts anything already running and if it conflicts- i.e. breaks the joint...
as it is- i'll be passing through Chicago somewhere around 0100~0200 if everything goes right, and with potential to be out of comms for a week or so shortly following.... i'd rather not install now but will be happy to draft something up upon return.
and... i owe you $20... those bastardos no shippy shippy, still out of stock as of this a.m....

While the critics have liked the new star wars, people I know who have seen it mostly hated it. Many thought it was the worst one ever... a slow car chase is how it was described (think OJ).
I'm not a star wars fan, so I never planned on seeing it. I do think the fact that people seem to have loved it or hated it seems interesting. Not as many in the middle.
I do think Disney has a formula that works very very very well in their animated films. I'm not so sure that always translates to other types of movies.
-
Skip the $20. No worries. I forgot anyway.
-
if i skip i'll be plagued until my dying breath.... principle thing with me, Sir- but thanks for the consideration!
-
With kids, we go to most of the animated movies. With kids, adult movies mean date night and the reality is when we go out, the movies are usually not a priority. We go to other events.
-
Ent-- (and others). I started a Last Jedi thread. Please discuss the movie over there, and not here. Thanks.
-
My oldest daughter is 11 and she's started getting into some movies that I like, like Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy. It gives me an excuse to go to the movies - I hardly ever went after my third girl was born just because it was too much of a hassle.
Theatres are getting really fancy. But I hate, hate 3D effects in movies. However, one theatre opened up a Dolby screen, which I accidentally went to because I thought it would be cheap. It was not cheap, but it was pretty cool. I watched Blade Runner on that, and you could feel the sounds in your chest.
-
I think I've been to the theaters a total of 5 times in my 38 years of existence and definitely not more than once in the past 20.

Why pay a premium on top of the ordinary cost of attending a movie? No movie experience has ever been that good or critical to see at a first run. I did go see Dunkirk with other male friends, but haven't seen an adult movie w my wife since Lincoln.
-
Lincoln isn't an adult movie.
-
Lincoln is/was a movie I wasn't about to take my very young (at the time) kids to see.
I'm pretty sure it was PG-13, and that doesn't necessarily mean it had swear words, or violence to shield them from.
'AS' Adult Situations. They wouldn't be able to sit through any of it. 2:30 minute run time.

last time I was in theater was for Spiderman, probably 15 years ago or so
cause my daughter who was about 5 or 6 at the time wanted to go, but was scared and wanted me to go along
She's at UNL today - turns 21 in a couple weeks

indeed. The funny thing is, the kids demonstrate an awareness of Lincoln, as he's quite celebrated in most corners of the US (especially IL, IN, KY who all claim him) but then they ask about the Civil War, and it gets very complicated. The one thing that really confuses them is why some but not all of their family members who served in the armed forces, why did some go to war, but not others. They always ask my brother why he was in Korea if there wasn't a war.

Please keep Last Jedi talk on the Last Jedi spoilers thread.
Thanks,
