Title: Your School's all-time top 25 recruits
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on December 18, 2020, 12:53:23 PM
24/7 has a cool feature at the bottom of the team page - their all-time to 25 recruits...only going back to the year 2000 or so.  But it's interesting nonetheless.

For Florida:
1. Ronald Powell LB/DE - a perfect .9999 recruit, he was a good player, but tore up his knee and was never special.  Drafted in 4th round, I believe.
2. Brock Berlin QB - couldn't beat out Rex Grossman, transferred to Miami.
3. Martez Ivey OT - wound up being good his last 2 years, but wasn't special.
4. Percy Harvin WR - finally, a guy who played up to his ranking.  All-American, 1st rounder
5. Vernon Hargreaves III CB - All-American, 1st rounder
6. D.J. Humphries OT - good/not great, probably having a better NFL career than college
7. Will Hill S - a very good player, but an idiot, I think he wound up getting kicked off the team.  Did start in the NFL for a time.
8. Dominique Easley DT - very good player and a 1st rounder, hurt a lot
9. Jelani Jenkins LB - good, solid college player, not special at all
10. Sharrif Floyd DT - same class as Easley, so the pair wreaked havoc, 1st rounder
11. Ciatrick Fason RB - had one great year at Florida, but that's it
12. Andre Caldwell WR - younger brother of another FL WR, was very good, but not special
13. Derrick Harvey DE - had one big year in the 08 NC season, 1st rounder
14. CeCe Jefferson DE - was very good, but not special...always found it odd that a 6'1" 270 DE was rated so highly in the first place
15. Gervon Dexter DT - playing some in this, his FR season - big but agile and long for 290 lbs
16. Derrell Lee DE - was supposed to replace Jevon Kearse/Alex Brown as sack-artist, but he was below average
17. Chris Leak QB - won a NC his SR season and holds all-time passing yardage record at UF
18. Gary Brown DT - he played sometimes but never did anything, total bust
19. Carlos Dunlap DE - great player, but in trouble a lot, long NFL career
20. Jarvis Moss DE - paired with Harvey to help coral Troy Smith & Co. for NC in 06.  1st rounder
21. Teez Tabor CB - good cover corner, All-SEC type.  Left school early, but went undrafted
22. Matt Elam S - short and thick for a safety, he was a great player - All-American and 1st rounder
23. Jonathan Bullard DE - good player, really improved in SR season
24. Tim Tebow QB - you know it all
25. Andre Dubose WR - stunk as a WR, but was an elite return man

A lot of Michigan’s top recruits probably pre-date that entire system. Drew Henson was a huge deal, as was Charles Woodson.

It's a bit oxymoronic to list "all time since 2000", is it not?

3. Julian Fleming WR - FR season 2020
4. Noah Spence DE -
5. Nick Bosa DE - All-American? 1st rounder - sat out most of final season
6. Beanie Wells RB - teamed with Ginn to make BCSNCG
7. Sam Maldonado RB -
8. Nicholas Petit-Frere OT -
9. Chase Young DE - All-American, 2nd overall draft pick

Pryor was a huge deal. He was a highly rated basketball recruit as well. I really think if RichRod had been able to nab him, his tenure would’ve been completely different at Michigan. Pryor was a special athlete. Would’ve loved to see Pryor at QB and Denard Robinson at RB/WR.

I thought we didn't like the NFL thing!

(I have some stuff this afternoon, but I WILL get to Wisconsin's)

Am I getting him mixed up with someone else?  Didn't he change at OSU?  The 12-0 team that got no love?  Hmmph, I need to look it up.

Bah, I'm mixing him up with Braxton Miller.  Oops.

Pryor really wanted to not be in a spread. So he put, not quite Cam Newton, but maybe Tebow-ish ability into an offense that kinda limited it and forced him to make harder throws. He was a pretty good college QB, but 2-3 times a game, he'd make a play that was just another level (but in that kind of subtle way, where he turns a 2-yard scramble into 14 and looks like another species from the kid trying to tackle him).

Ummm, I wish.  The Lions took him in the 2nd round, and even in a franchise as bad as Detroit, he may be the worst pick they've ever made.  He was out of the NFL within like 2 years I believe.

I don't think I could name a Top 25. As for some outstanding recruits, here are a few.

1. Alex Karras - Outland Trophy Winner, and Webster's TV Dad. The back story is that the Iowa coaching staff hid Alex Karras almost an entire summer at Lake Okoboji, Iowa at a time Indiana was attempting to recruit him and where his brother Ted Karras played (also a future NFL player), so Indiana could not find Alex Karras to recruit him. He helped lead Iowa to its first ever Rose Bowl following the 1956 season, was the 1957 Outland Trophy winner, and runner-up to the Heisman Trophy award.

2. Chuck Long - One of the greatest college football QBs ever, was lightly recruited out of Wheaton, Illinois. In high school he was an option QB. In college he was one of the greatest passing QBs up to that time in NCAA football hx. He never really found a place in the NFL.

3. Bob Sanders - Two-Star recruit in 2000 who turned into a 3x all Big Ten Safety. 2007 NFL Player of the Year for the Colts.

I mention these 3 because two of them were lightly recruited, and all-time greats. Alex Karras was a known quantity in high school, and the back story of Iowa having sealed him away from other schools in Okoboji is a colorful story, and almost certainly would be against NCAA rules, today, and I am guessing yesterday, as well. I think Woody Hayes was looking for Alex Karras too, and didn't find him.

Damn, I'm off today.  It was another pair of Florida CBs that left early and went undrafted:  Roberson and Purifoy.
.
Tabor was better his SO year when he went by Jalen Tabor.  He got weird and worse when he went by Teez.
Speaking of the Lions, how as Jarrad Davis fared at LB?

Pryor was more talented than Cam or Tebow overall. He didn’t have quite the arm strength of Cam, but he wasn’t any less accurate. Both those guys were better pure throwers of the football than Tebow. Pryor was a legit sub 4.4 guy at 6’5, 230 pounds. He was magic with the ball in his hands. Cam ran 4.57 while Tebow wasn’t anywhere near as fast as either.

Pryor wanted to play in a pro style, which is why he went to OSU over Michigan. It was actually very close battle. The kid was born to play in an offense like RichRod or Urban’s and he went to go play in a pro style. Go figure. In the right system he’d have shattered records. He could’ve been a 3,500 to 4,000 yard passer and 1,000 to 1,200 yard rusher with 50 combined TD’s in the right system. His legs were so underutilized under Tressel but that’s what he wanted- he wanted to be a Manning or Brady when he just didn’t have that skill set or talent.

It's amazing how often people want to be what they aren't.  Rock stars wish they were athletes.  Basketball players wish they were musicians.  Dual-threats wish they were pocket passers.

And for the umpteenth time, someone's got to explain to me how a slow, shitty-throwing FB playing QB could finish his career with the 2nd-highest QB rating EVER, with as many pass TD as Peyton Manning and more rushing TDs than Herschel or Bo.
Must've been divine intervention, after all.

Tebow had great intangibles and was in a great system that fit his skills to a T, surrounded by a ton of talent with one of the best ever coaches pulling all the strings in Urban.

These are Wisconsin's only 5* recruits since 2000.

Oglesby never really lived up to that ranking, as he was often injured. But he did very well. Ostrowski was also always injured. He could have been something.

Hawthorne was a BEAST.

Brown and Rucci are brand new. Brown is seeing the field this season. Injured all last season.

Good a place as any to tout the book, the Courting of Marcus Dupree.  I know the 30-30 show is well regarded on the subject but the book is phenomenal on the subject of recruiting, sport, race and society.

Of course this was late70s-early 80s but the story remains relevant 40 years later .

Funny, I was just looking at Iowa's list this morning and thought, "not a great hit rate here."

1. Kyle Williams LB: Never enrolled. Ended up going to Purdue before committing something terrible (I don't remember if it was rape or murder). He's in prison.

2. A.J. Epenesa DE: All-American, 2nd round pick

3. Tony Moeaki TE: Couldn't stay healthy. 2nd team All-B1G, 3rd round pick

4. Blake Larsen OT: Biggest bust since at Iowa since...? I do believe he dealt with some injuries.

5. Matt Roth DE: 2x All-B1G, 2nd round pick

6. Dan Doering OT: Massive bust

7. Dace Richardson OT: What coulda been... 1st team All-B1G. Missed all or major parts of 3 seasons with knee injuries.

8. Jeremiha Hunter LB: Solid player, but didn't live up to the ranking. 2nd team All-Big, UDFA

9. Jermelle Lewis RB: Looked to be special when filling in for Freddie Russell. Back-to-back knee injuries ended his career.

10. Bryan Bulaga OT: 1st team, 2nd team All-B1G, 1st round pick

... This is tiring, I'll summarize the rest. 11-25:

Drafted: 3

Still in school: 2

Transferred / dropped out: 4

Of note: he was dismissed from Purdue's program before that incident. It was IMHO either rape or aggravated battery of a woman, perhaps both? Something very very bad but not murder.

2. Ted Ginn Jr CB - Burst onto the scene with some amazing plays as a freshman and had a great career. Also had a long NFL career, although more of a journeyman path.
3. Julian Fleming WR - Has only played a bit this year behind Chris Olave.  Presumably will be a starter next year.
4. Noah Spence DE - A big recruit for Urban, was on his way to a big career but got into ecstasy which led to him getting suspended and transferring to Eastern Kentucky.  Was still a second round pick and is still in the league.
5. Nick Bosa DE - Great player who tore his groin early in his last season and sat out.
6. Beanie Wells RB - Big time running back, was a first round pick, but had lots of injury issues.
7. Sam Maldonado RB - A big time bust. I rembeber ESPN trying to run a OSU hit piece involving him, where they featured how OSU was mistreating him by refusing to play him despite the fact that he was overweight, not very good, and constantly missing class.  They put him in remedial classes, then decried that remedial classes wouldn't transfer to other colleges. He eventually finished at Maryland.
8. Nicholas Petit-Frere OT - Started this year for the first time.
9. Chase Young DE - All-American, 2nd overall draft pick
10. Jeff Okudah CB - same class as Young, All-American and 1st rd pick
11. Paris Johnson Jr OT - FR season 2020
12. Baron Browning LB - Somewhat underwhelming career, he is very athletic and gets playing time but hasn't really dominated the position like his star rating would suggest.
13. Alex Boone OT - Was a long time starter but got embarrassed against Florida in the BCS, also had a big alcohol problem.  Eventually did get a pretty good career in the league.
14. Zach Harrison DE - In his second year, hasn't quite popped off yet but seems ready to
15. Mike D'Andrea LB - Had constant injuries and never made much of an impact.  He does own a car dealership that I bought a car form.
16. Marco Cooper LB - FR season 2020 He's an old head who got arrested a bunch of times and kicked off the team in the early aughts
17. Derek Morris OT - Asked for release from his scholarship and never made it on the field.  Landed at NC State.
18. Donte Whitner CB - 1st rd pick at safety - One of my favorite players.
19. Michael Brewster C - Had a strong career for the Bucks but went undrafted
20. Jamario O'Neal CB - He always kind of sucked
21. Shaun Wade CB - Came back to play outside corner, which has gone up and down this year. A willing hitter and physical guy, not sure lockdown corner in the league.
22. Garrett Wilson WR - Been a hell of a receiver. Has one more year.
23. Donovan Jackson G -Future guy
24. Curtis Grant LB - Was a big time recruit but was never more than a solid starter

Wisconsin
1. Josh Oglesby, OT: Was very competent and once got voted All-Big Ten. Injury prone and had bad knee issues. Relatively good recruit, didn't meet the hype
2. Logan Brown, OT: Freshman now, who knows?
3. Nolan Rucci, OT: Just signed
4. Anttaj Hawthorne, DT: Three-time all-conference, once AA. Anchored one of the best defenses UW has had
5. Justin Ostrowski, DT: Undone by injuries. Sad story, football-wise
6. Travis Beckum, TE: Freak athlete who started on the defensive side, but they kinda knew where he'd end up. Was hyper productive as a soph and junior despite not really blocking. Injuries made his last year a mess. Really produced, but since crowded out by other UW TEs
7. John Clay, RB: Won a conference rushing title and offensive player of the year. Posted 3,400 yards and 41 TDs in three years, one as a backup, one limited by injury. Got fat and left us wanting more.
8. Brett Bell, CB: I think he was good at points. He was bad as a senior after a torn ACL. Also hit by a Michigan punt in a crucial close loss in 2001
9. Darius Jones, DL/LB: Modestly good defensive lineman, injured a lot and had his career cut short
10. Graham Mertz, QB: Jury still out. This year has been weird for him
11. Nick Hayden, DT: Three-year starter and generally very good. HM all-conference twice
12. Trey Wedig, OT: Still too early to tell
13. Dan Voltz, OG: 2.5 good years, then injuries ended things
14. Jack Nelson, OT: Still too early to tell
15. Jaden Gault, OT: Left program with depression, found a blood clot issues and never played.
16. Vince Biegel, OLB: Longtime contributor and starter. Not the most statistically dominant backer of this era, but second or third team all-conference three times
17. Kraig Appleton, WR: Thrown off the team after robbing a drug dealer
18. Joe Thomas: One of the greatest players in UW history
19. JP Benzschawel, OT: Enrolling this year
20. Tyler Westphal, DE: Missed two seasons, transferred twice, finished up at Oshkosh
21. Cole Van Lanen, OT: Has started, was not as good as hoped this season
22. Riley Mahlman, OT: Enrolling this year
23. Jalen Berger, RB: Freshman this year, seems like he will be good, but hasn't been as instant impact as hoped
24. Nick Herbig, OLB: Freshman now, has played some. I think he's been OK thus far
25. Corey Clement, RB: He was a beastly backup his first two years. Then, when he was supposed to take over, he got concussed and had other issues. He wrapped his career with as grinding a 1,345-yard season as you'll see, but he was vital for a 11-3 team.

and the Huskers have never been the top recruiter in their conference

I wouldn’t have the first clue.  Noel Devine would be way up there and he panned out nicely. Jason Gwaltney would be way Up there and he didn’t.  Tavon was pretty high I think and he was a stud.  WVU beat out Ohio St for a WV OL about 10 years or so ago named Josh Jenkins.  Very highly regarded nationally.  It was a big deal to land him.  He was a 3 year starter and solid, but never received any All Conference accolades or anything like that.  Didn’t get drafted.  The expectations were so high for him that a lot of fans regard him as a bust even though he wasn’t.

Idk. Those 4 jump to mind.  I just don’t follow recruiting closely enough.
