History of the lead in titles in this league:
- Wisconsin won the first two and lead 2-0 (both were outright). They split with Michigan in 1901 and maintained their lead because that was their third and Michigan's second.
- Michigan tied Wisconsin at three in 1902 and passed them with four in 1903. Michigan got to six titles and held the lead until after they left the conference.
- Minnesota tied Michigan with six in 1910 and passed them with seven in 1911. Minnesota maintained their lead until:
- Michigan tied Minnesota with eight in 1922 and passed them with nine in 1923. Michigan maintained their lead until:
- Minnesota tied Michigan with 15 in 1940 and passed them with 16 in 1941. Minnesota maintained their lead until:
- Michigan tied Minnesota with 16 in 1943 and passed them with 17 in 1947. Michigan has held the lead alone ever since.

- 3 Northwestern, last in 2000

6-10
at this point the usual contenders are looking so good.
Penn St., Michigan, Wisconsin - they don't seem too close to matching the Bucks in this crazy season

As we know, it takes only one upset at the wrong time to the wrong team to knock OSU out of the CG, even if they probably are the best team. It's going to happen every so often, as it has in the past. So, I might say OSU would win 4 of 5 of the next Eastern division titles, but not 100%. And they lose Fields and his blocking ability next year.

What is the breakdown since Nebraska joined? Maryland?

I see what you did there. :)

As long as there is a CCG each year and only 1 champion each year, the chances of getting a conference championship in a 14-team Big Ten will be much lower than the old era with all those goofy co-championships in a 10-team conference.
A league title prior to 2011 is almost the equivalent of a division championship today.
I feel like the Big Ten should almost do like the NFL did when it merged with the AFL. NFL teams today are rated on how many Super Bowl titles they have. All those NFL titles teams won before the Super Bowl fall into a different category.

The Browns were good, pre SB. But yeah, nobody knows that.

There are a few, but they are REALLY old.
My dad, 80, remembers the Browns as a powerhouse

Heh. I sAw that clip and thought "COOL"
Obviously, we should have benched Fromm.

Not just the Browns, but the Detroit Lions as well.
-
How could the Gophers still be comfortably in third place? Is anyone else even trying?

In the '50s they both made the Title game a bunch of times.I think the Lions held a 2-3 or 3-4 advantage vs the Browns

...and Illinois is still fourth?
What are the rest of you even doing? :57:

Tough to win titles for most schools not called OSU right now.

Tough to win titles for most schools not called OSU right now.
And the ones that do are the noobs like Penn State and Michigan State, who have a lot of catching up to do.
But the Gophers has gifted everyone 50+ years in order to catch up.
-
Since PSU joined, they have 4. NU has 3. UW has 6.
OSU mostly stands in the way, as is true for all the teams.
-
Yeah maybe, but the rest of you are stuck behind a pair of teams that have been hilariously bad for a long time. Illinois hasn't won one in two decades, and Minnesota hasn't won one in over five decades, yet not one other team could sneak past either. It is like watching the tortoise try to catch up to the hare while it's napping.
-
if it weren't for the greedy derned Buckeyes, those other teams would have passed the Gophers and Illini
blame yerself
-
Good point. We are keeping the little guy down.
The Gophers and Illini simply had the foresight to get their titles in before the 70s.
-
Who out there is currently near Bama/Clemson/Ohio State? Nearest, IYHO?
Florida? A&M? Cincy? ND?
-
Florida? A&M? Oklahoma? ND?
yes, those teams, maybe
Georgia? are they improving as the season goes along?
-
UGA appears to have found a decent QB who can throw a bit, so yes, I think they have improved. This guy is the five star who transferred from USC, and he's good. The previous two were gamers, but 5'10" doesn't work well, even if you are pretty accurate on short balls.
I don't think they should be in any conversation of this ilk however.
