Title: The best current coaches in P5 CFB
Post by: Cincydawg on December 11, 2020, 07:56:06 AM
Can you list ten you consider to be the top coaches out there?

Is the list just a list of coaches of programs that have had recent success?  Obviously, the two may be highly correlated, but there could be a difference between top programs of late and best coaches, no?

What are your top ten programs of late, I'm talking say last ten years, and does that correlate with your list of coaches much?

Here is the SI list of top programs 2010-2019 (not that it's right, it's just one such list):

I already filled out my list in another thread because CD hijacked it and made it so

OK here's my list
Off the top on my head,Mullen and maybe Patterson,Cutcliffe use to be bantered about,I don't follow Duke so........The Universities in Indiana are certainly stoked well Kelly,Brohm and Allen wouldn't have a problem with any of these. Many like Clawson at Wake he has taken them to 4 bowl games in which they won 3.Fuentes was a hot commodity when VTech scooped him up a few yrs back.As afore mentioned Fickell/Campbell and I'd end with the Pirate and Pat Fitz at NU.Oh and I still like Frost if he can get the roster filled out.I might mention Chryst but he's not going anywhere - Packers perhaps

Only so I can sneer at your lists of course.

And the above paragraph response of course is not even a list, it's perhaps a compendium at best.

I just tried to name as many P5 HCs as I could outside of the Big Ten, off of the top of my head.

About a baker's dozen.

Excuse me I appear to be listing - it is Friday after all

Well, Karl Dorrell hasn't lost a game at CU, so he should be on top....

Current top 10, based on wins:
1. Mack Brown - 258
2. Saban - 252
3. Patterson - 177
4. Solich - 173
5. Ferentz - 167
6. Miles - 145
7. Leach - 141
8. Swinney - 139
9 Kelly - 135
tie) Gundy - 135

For Florida, I'd take Saban from that group.  I wouldn't be thrilled with any of the others (as a new HC hire, today).  I'd probably like the 11th name on the list, Whittingham.  I'm just not stoked about these tried-and-true guys - most are on the downside of their careers.

I reeeeeally wish a helmet program would hire Niumatalolo and run the option.  Become the new/old Nebraska for the next generation.

Fit is also a huge thing. For whatever reason, Harbaugh does not fit at Michigan. His fire burns hot and fast, and wears out quickly - as we are seeing now. He's toast.

That's why I'd pass on Swinney.  I think he's got lightning in a bottle - the hokey, aww shucks Jesus guy in rural South Carolina.  I think that's a persona that reeeeally works if you're winning and reeeeally doesn't if you're not.
He's like a young Bobby Bowden - just missing the grandfatherlyness bit.  As long as he has great coordinators, he'll be fine.  But if/when FSU, Miami, VT, etc rise back up, we'll see.

But if Dabo Swinney was Michigan's HC tomorrow, I don't think his schtick would fly.

Dabo IMO wouldn't leave for Bama when Satan Saban steps down. He's buildt a similar situation and I'm guessing the weathers nicer in the Carolina's.He's on cruise control

He probably wouldn't want to live in such a big city like Tuscaloosa.

I really could only think of 4 or 5 current coaches that I THINK are top tier coaches and who would do better than the rest just about anywhere.

Saban heads my list, he's hard to ignore, and then Swinney I suppose.  Patterson I think, Fitzpatrick.  I'd give Mullen another year or so, but I think he belongs.

I was also musing about how Smart could make this list IFF UGA wins an NC in the next few years, and then he's on it, whether he's that good a coach or not.  I don't really like that type of thinking (Orgeron).

So, it seems out of 130+ coaches, or however many are in P5, "we" can't list very many we think are "clearly above average".

It's very subjective.

The very best coach might be at Cincy right now. Might.

It's a lot to do with fit.

Saban didn't light the world on fire at Michigan State, and he sucked at the next level, like many have. Then there's Pete Carrol, who sucked at the next level, elevated USC into a machine, and now he's good at the next level.

Chip Kelly rocked it at Oregon. Then he sucked at the next level, and now he sucks at UCLA.

They already tried the whole hot shot coach from the south thing, and it was like an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies.

West Virginia isn't exactly the South - it seceded from Virginia and went with the North. But point taken.I really think Miles would have worked out much better than things have in AA

I wouldn't compare what RR did at WV with the run Clemson has been on.  And RichRod ain't southern compared to Dabo.

Even better than how he's done at Kansas?

Gary Patterson?  Better than Lincoln Riley, who fails to make your list?

I forgot about Riley, frankly.  But he's winning with someone else's players I think.  Or something.

I am a bit hesitant to label anyone at a name program a great coach unless he clearly has stepped it up.  Is Smart a great coach?  I don't think so.  He might be.

His record is almost identical to Richt's after five years.

I think that means we're very bad at defining what it means to be average.

Jeff Scott might be.
There's no reason for South Florida to be winless vs FBS teams.  Now, he was hired and 5 minutes later COVID happened, so it's early, but there's too much talent around there to suck that hard.

It must be the "or something," because he's in his 4th year as HFC and he led the charge in recruiting better offensive players his 2 years as OC under Bob Stoops.

I feel like you kinda have to give someone into Year 3 to decide? Right? They're not all that talented at the moment. It's not great.

It seems like musical chairs to me.  I imagine some Big Donors carp at the AD and out goes the coach, and in come another coach no better, maybe worse.

It would be interesting to rate which coaches brought in five years ago or so were upgrades versus what was there anyway.

many times it seems it's more about the right timing and "fit" to a program than what coach.  Some previously successful coaches fail and some previous failures succeed with a change of location.

So, can't blame the AD and boosters for trying a change if the current situation isn't working.

Of course, there's a fine line with giving the current coach the extra time or maybe the extra support to succeed after a few bad seasons and just pulling the plug.

sometimes I think it's the failure of the AD and leadership, they don't want to look in the mirror, so blame the coach and hire another guy.
