Title: Other P5 races heading into the final weekend before CG's
Post by: medinabuckeye1 on December 07, 2020, 02:49:51 PM
ACC:
Notre Dame and Clemson have clinched and will play in the ACCCG at 4pm EST on 12/19 in Charlotte, on ABC.

B12:
Iowa State and Oklahoma have clinched and will play in the B12CG at noon EST on 12/19 in Arlington, TX on ABC.

P12-N:
Washington and Oregon are sitting at #1 and #2 in the standings and play each other this weekend so the winner probably goes but IF Oregon beats Washington AND Stanford beats OrSU then all three would finish with two losses:

Oregon would have the best winning percentage and wins over both Washington AND Stanford so I'm about 99% certain they would go but the P12's tiebreakers are complex.

P12-S:
4-0 USC plays 3-2 UCLA while 3-0 Colorado plays 1-2 Utah.  It is between USC and Colorado ONLY because every other team has at least two losses.  If either USC or Colorado wins and the other loses, the winner will go.  If both win or both lose I'm not sure.  I *THINK* it would be decided based on highest rank in the CFP rankings.

SEC:
Florida and Alabama have clinched and will play in the SECCG at 8pm EST on 12/19 in Atlanta, GA on CBS.

Wow, this post generated no discussion at all.  I guess that makes sense since most everything is already set.

Seven of the 10 P5 CG slots are definitively clinched (both ACC, both B12, both SEC, B1G-W).

Ohio State would be #8 if they had played one more game and can clinch simply by playing this week.

That only leaves the PAC and there aren't really any fun hypotheticals there it is just Ore/UW playing for one slot and USC with the other unless they lose AND Colorado wins.

Yeah, I tried and I tried to come up with an off the wall scenario for you to break down, but there just isn't any. There's the whole USC/Colorado thing, but you already mentioned it.

I've already thrown in the towel on the 2020 season. I will not be watching the Purdue/IU game or whatever team they get matched up with next weekend in "Champions" week.

The entire CFB season was half-shitshow, but Purdue went all in.

Wow, Bwarbs endured the entirety of the Darrell Hazell regime, but NOW he is throwing in the towel?

I understand it

Husker's season started off like crap

I said early on before the Badgers bowed out and some Husker fans were bitching about the schedule.......... I'd rather finish strong this season and plan for next year.

Oh, watching Purdue football wasn't a priority during the Hazell regime. That was just terrible.

I haven't thrown in the towel on Brohm. I'm just done with 2020. Hoping that next year is better. It's when some of the higher-level recruits of the past couple years should finally start maturing physically enough to be difference makers, particularly on the OL where we've had so much trouble.

But 2020, to echo Badge, can go 2020 itself.

  • 3-2 Washington
  • 4-2 Oregon
  • 3-2 Stanford

The Washington/Oregon game scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled due to COVID-19 cases in the Huskies' program.

I *THINK* that means that Washington has now mathematically clinched a spot in the P12CG but there are multiple complications:

Oregon is in second place at 3-2 and would (at least theoretically) win a tie with the only team that can catch them (Stanford) based on H2H.

The Utes are beating Colorado tomorrow. Take it to the bank.

There were rumors that if Colorado and USC had both finished undefeated the PAC would ammend their rules, scrap their divisons, and have Colorado and USC face off in their CG.

I assume that is off the table now that Utah took out Colorado so, presumably the PacCG will be USC/UW regardless of the outcome of USC's crosstown rivalry tonight.

I'm certain that the PAC and whichever network has their CG will be rooting HARD for USC tonight.

Thus, I believe that all ten P5CG slots are now accounted for:

It is clear that the winners of the first two are in. I am confident that tOSU is also in with a win.  Additionally, Bama is probably in regardless of the outcome of the SECCG and Notre Dame wouldn't necessarily be eliminated by a loss in the ACCCG.
