We're doing our usual-- one deep-fried turkey and one BBQ'd. Sides are my mom's homemade cornbread dressing (obviously), mashed taters, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, homemade yeast rolls, homemade pumpkin pie, homemade sweet tater pie, jellied cranberry, and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.
We'll be dining alfresco in my parents' backyard, weather reports right now look like 82 degree high with only a slight chance of rain so we should be okay.

The pandemic is preventing a family affair. Might do some volunteering. A bit annoyed my go-to place for solo Thanksgiving is now closed, but we will get on.

BAB cool we volunteer over at food pantry and handed out 115 turkeys last Thur.Ran out and passed out almost as many chickens.As the local food distributors was short on Turkeys because of the virus,thanx for volunteering

As mentioned in the weekend SOC post, we have a tradition that when we don't have the kids for the actual Thanksgiving holiday, we do "Fake Thanksgiving" the weekend before with them. So we've already done our Thanksgiving meal. The only guests were my wife's dad and stepmom, so we kept everything very small.
Usual menu. Turkey, filet for my wife (poultry allergy), green been casserole, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, cranberry, rolls, dessert. WAY too much food for the group, and pretty much 7 straight hours of cooking and cleaning seems like a lot for that size group. But it's our tradition...
For Thursday, the wife's dad and stepmom are going to come over again, and I'm going to smoke a slab of beef short ribs to be served with cheese potatoes, and Brussels sprouts. I'll be much more thankful for beef short ribs than turkey lol...
Gotta say I'm thankful that this year, my wife and I both worked full time the entire year. None of us in our families or immediate social circles have so far gotten COVID (as far as we know--no severe cases at least, I suppose we've all had asymptomatic cases twice now that I think about it). My father-in-law's scare where he had to get a pretty invasive surgery for a lymph node biopsy came up completely clean. We got a puppy. And although my wife's best friend is battling cancer... She's still here and battling.
For as big of a shitshow 2020 has been, it's been [so far] okay on a personal front.

We're driving over to Palm Beach to stay with friends for a few days. We all tested on Friday and we're good. We will not be going out anywhere before we hit the road. Same thing for them. We'll all be clean.

Doing a DIY walk/run for a brain cancer research group with the kids and a family in our school pod. Kind of cool to create your own course
Easy menu for the four of us, which will no doubt be all starches for the kids. Probably have ILs over for outdoor dessert by the fire pit. 50 ish in the cast.

I'll probably have various IPA (depends what I see at the butcher when I buy the meat, plus what I have on hand already) and some Firestone Walker 805 blonde ale ready to go. If I see anything non-IPA interesting at the butcher I'll consider that.

Our local French restaurant is closing for the week but the owner's son made dinner for us, take out, casoulet something something. The wife said it was great.

be a small gathering at my house. Both daughters, one boyfriend and Myself.
I asked daughters if they preferred turkey, ham, or steaks? They had no preference.
I usually do the Elton Brown turkey, but thinking about just a breast this year.
I have an abundance of steaks in the freezer and more on the way.
might just grill steaks, quick easy and they won't get those someplace else.
We are all hoping their grandmother doesn't host a large dinner.

Can’t wait. I’ve been extremely busy with work and could use the R&R. The WVU basketball team is playing in a tournament beginning Wednesday night. So, between basketball and football I’ll get to watch my Mountaineers 4 days in a row.
Having dinner at my mom’s. There will be 8 of us total. I mentioned in the other thread we had about 15 at my house last year. My BIL in Tennessee tested positive for Covid on Saturday so he and his family are quarantining down there. He seems to be doing ok though. A mild headache and fever but nothing he can’t handle he says. I have an aunt who is more like another grandmother to my kids recovering from a heart attack a couple of weeks ago, but seems to be doing a little better each day. A lot to be pray about but a lot to be thankful for, too.

64°F here and partly sunny after some rain (which we needed). Going for a nice walk forthwith.
Next week is going to be bitterly cold, down to 27°F predicted for Monday, and then below or near FREEZING for the next week. It's almost like it's nearly winter.
The wife will be huddled in a blanket and two sweaters inside the condo, which as I've told her we keep at 73°F anyway, so the outside T doesn't matter really except when I pay the bill.

43 degrees this morning in Phoenix. Of course I'm dog-sitting and got to take a nice, long walk.
Printing and cutting now, after calling my dad and having some bacon & eggs. Yes, I'm part of the problem. No, it doesn't make me a hypocrite. My argument isn't that eggs shouldn't be eaten at breakfast, it's that any and all foods should be as well.

Also I baste the bird every half hour or so - takes longer but worth it after one hour cindy gave me a herb infused butter that melts rather nicely down into the pan where the giblets are adding their taste to the gravy.When done Those go over the fence for the creatures - who I'm thankful for also

What is your worst Thanksgiving dinner of all time?
Me? I've had to do the Boston Market Thanksgiving dinner that they serve a time or two.
Any horror stories about going to a distant in-law or a random GF's home, and getting served liver and octopus, or some such?

except this one time I went to Lincoln with some Husker fans to stay the night before the Black Friday game. 2011, first Black Friday contest against the Hawks.
I did get some food at home before leaving, but then had the evening meal at Applebee's in Lincoln
there were about 12 of us at the table, many had the Turkey dinner. Think I had a steak or something

30 years ago or so, we were "driving to grandma's house" ON Thanksgiving and pulled off at an exit around lunchtime. We had packed some sandwiches, knowing nothing would be open.
We sit on the picnic tables outside a McDonalds or some other fast food joint, and suddenly, like 15 cars exit the highway and into the drive-thru, thinking it was open.
Back then, nothing was open on Thanksgiving. Now, everything that isn't a mom-and-pop joint is open, it seems.

Not really any terrible dinners although my wife’s grandma made a dryyyy turkey. In 02, I drove down to Georgia to help my sister move because she was having some issues in her marriage.
We spent the day before and the morning of Thanksgiving packing her stuff in a UHaul. We ate Thanksgiving dinner at the house of one of her friend’s. It was awkward. The only person I knew was my sister. But the people were nice and the food was good. After dinner we left and drove back to WV. Got in around midnight.
That was probably my worst Thanksgiving.

Got up early to put the bird in the oven and then went back to my bedroom to binge watch old Cold Case episodes until everyone else woke up. Hubby had to work today, so we had an early dinner with us, my sister and my son who is temporarily living with us. Then helped my sis with her computer issues; found multiple poems (she is a poet) in multiple folders - she never has figured out the difference between "save" and "save as", so her poems are all over the place on her computer, lol.
All other family members are in South Dakota, Kansas, Wyoming, Texas, New Jersey, and Kentucky. Some are on lockdown (Kentucky), some are working, etc. My brother is dealing with his first holiday without his wife (she died from Covid last month) but seems to be holding on ok. My uncle in New Jersey is recovery from cancer surgery. My daughter in Kentucky last week had to put her 16 year old son in a facility for adolescents with autism, and then the lockdown happened. He does not talk on the phone and is skittish about Skype, so I am not sure what they will do for the holiday. Her oldest is still doing the virtual class thing (he is a freshmen engineering student at UK) so he is at least at home, along with her other kids (20, 15, and 8).
My husband and I are just thankful that we are both ok and he returned to work last week after being off for four months or so with recovery from rotator cuff surgery. We have been lucky we had my inheritance from my mom who passed this February to help us make it through without too much trouble. His parents and brother in South Dakota have been in constant quarantine since this all began due to his brother's chemo for skin, lung, and brain cancer; his mother's semi quarterly doctor visits from her colon cancer, and his father has Bell's palsy.
My team has been dismal this year, too. Did I mention 2020 has sucked beyond belief? Keeping our fingers crossed for a better year next year.

Almost as much fun as the year my oven blew up when the turkey was half done. No one open to fix the oven, so I broiled it. Worked out pretty good.

Oh, I forgot the first year I had Thanksgiving with a friend instead of family. We were gonna fry us a turkey outside. It was gonna be great! I put the turkey in the oil as I light the stove. He doesn't correct me or notice. We eat about 8 hours later.

I learned what "duck confit" actually is. I'd had it before but never paid any attention to its being anything other than just cooked duck.
"Confit" of course is pronounced "coun-FEEE" apparently, or something akin to that. It's a means of preservation apparently by cooking and storing the duck in fat.
The confit is prepared in a centuries-old process of preservation that consists of salt curing a piece of meat (generally goose, duck, or pork) and then cooking it in its own fat.[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duck_confit#cite_note-1)
To prepare a confit, the meat is rubbed with salt, garlic, and sometimes herbs such as thyme (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thyme), then covered and refrigerated for up to 36 hours. Salt-curing the meat acts as a preservative.
Prior to cooking, the spices are rinsed from the meat, which is then patted dry. Skipping the salt curing stage greatly reduces the shelf life of the confit.

The wife had arranged with the owner of our local French restaurant to prepare it, so it only needed reheating as he told me, searing it a bit in a skillet and then putting it in a 400°F oven for 5 minutes. They also provided green beans and ravioli, which were quite tasty. The wife and our neighbor raved about the confit.

The wife likes lighter beers, fortunately I have weaned her of Michelob whatever it is. She likes Sweetwater 420 which is not bad beer at all IMHO. She also like Peroni and Sapporo, which I can tolerate.
I had a Bitburger at lunch the other day and she liked it too.

Right or Left, I'm usually impressed with either. If you offered me a red burgundy of equal note, I might choose that instead. Maybe, depending.
I had opened a Gigondas for the duck not knowing he was bringing the Bordeaux. I think mine paired better, though it was a much cheaper wine. I think I paid about $22 for it at Costco.
Another wine I've had good luck with is Lirac, but there are not well known in the US and hard to find, usually.

I prefer Left Bank but it's all plenty tasty.
And in my opinion Bordeaux is complex enough that it pairs best with simpler more singular flavors, which is why it's great with steak, but not so good with a pepperoni pizza.

I was advised once to try an austere white wine with steak, and I was amazed how well that pairs. I often have a white with steak, something like a Sancerre.

Our hosts in Canada have one. Can't help you with the recipe. It is strangely delicious. One of those things that I'm sure wouldn't taste as good if made in a non remote outpost while fishing all day.
