Title: Is This The Beginning of The End for Jeremy Pruitt’s Tenure at TN
Post by: gymvol on November 22, 2020, 01:51:35 PM

We can only hope, I think even the most ardent fans and boosters are tired of this BS.

snip:

We can dissect every single play from Tennessee’s 30-17 loss to Auburn. We can give our opinions on what went right, what went wrong, what we think will improve, what we think will get worse, etc. We can even look for the bright spots in a losing effort.

But you’re not here to read about that.

Yes, it was nice to see the results in the running game, and some quality defensive performances. But we all know it doesn’t matter, because in the end it was wasted on another missed opportunity.
Because when Jarrett Guarantano (https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/players/280293/jarrett-guarantano) tried another ill-fated pass into the end zone, and

Auburn’s Smoke Monday (https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/players/306989/smoke-monday) jumped the route, every Tennessee fan watching knew what was coming. They saw it against Kentucky this year, they saw it against Georgia this year, they saw it against

Alabama in 2019, they saw it against Indiana in 2019, they saw it against Florida in 2018, they have seen the same story over and over and over again. A quarterback who can’t stop making mistakes.

And a head coach who refuses to acknowledge the root of the problem.

It’s kind of incredible isn’t it? At least two years of the Jeremy Pruitt era have been defined by a quarterback who not only inhibits the offense, but actively helps opposing defenses. And it’s a player he did not recruit! Whatever idea of loyalty you might have in college football, it is beyond obvious that a new coach simply won’t have the same connection to players he never recruited.

Yet, for whatever reason, this did not apply to Jeremy Pruitt and Jarrett Guarantano. Now Tennessee finds themselves with five straight losses, with no permanent change made at the one position on the field that cannot consistently do the job.

No, at this point I actually do not blame Jarrett Guarantano. He has been at Tennessee for five years, and we have all seen what his ceiling is. We know all his limitations and all his strengths. There is exactly one person in the world who entered Saturday’s game against Auburn and expected anything different. That man is the head coach, Jeremy Pruitt.

If you’re looking for a parallel situation, you might look at the Saints and backup quarterback Taysom Hill (https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/players/77845/taysom-hill), who they simply refuse to give up on, no matter how many fastballs he throws into the dirt. It’s mind boggling—if not slightly humorous—that highly paid professional football coaches have a stubbornness that actively inhibits their decision making. Pruitt is in this group, of course. Even less fortunate coaches, like Mike Norvell at FSU, made a quicker change when they realized their upperclassmen option at quarterback could not do the job. This revelation has yet to make it to the Tennessee football staff.

I don’t think Pruitt will get fired this year. But I think this game—and more distinctly, his decision to start Jarrett Guarantano—is the beginning of the end. Coaches can have bad losses like Kentucky, they can have completely deflating performances like Arkansas. But when the entire fanbase can see something that you are completely oblivious to...it’s time to start heading to the exit sign. Your ego has gotten in the way, and by that point, you can guarantee that your team doesn’t trust what they are being told.

At this point, I sincerely hope that Guarantano leaves the program. Either for a chance at the next level, or a chance on a different team. Because whatever this staff is doing has not helped, and the constant decision to trot him out there—only to absorb the brunt of fan ire—is a downright abuse of power.

There are three games left in this train wreck of a season that the Tennessee Volunteers (https://www.rockytoptalk.com/) have embarked on. They will likely finish 3-7, with a distinct chance at 2-8. A worse mark than pretty much anyone could have imagined. There are first year head coaches doing significantly better than Tennessee right now, despite not even getting a full offseason to assess their rosters.

There are no more excuses left to be had, and no more blame to be passed around. Jeremy Pruitt has completely and utterly failed in his third year with the program. His team is not prepared, and he is unwilling to make the necessary calls to change the long-term outlook. Right now his best option is to roll with Harrison Bailey (https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/players/342752/harrison-bailey) the rest of the way, and try his best to pull off an upset of either Florida or Texas A&M (https://www.goodbullhunting.com/).

If he chooses not to do so, he might as well start clearing out the office.

I saw similar type posts in 2007-8 when the fools were running  off the second winningest coach in UT histrory
( after winning the East two of the previous four seasons). How did that work out?
It wasn't the beginning of the end of Fulmer...it was the beginning of the end of Tennessee football.
Running football coaches off every 3-4 years because you don't get instant gratificatipon only makes things worse.

This caught me eye in all of that.

If there is not improvement next year and significant signs of more to come the following year, I believe his seat will be hot

I wonder if the answer to that question shouldn't be determined based on who might be available at the end of the season.   I know that's not very sporting or above-board, but our last coaching search was a nightmare.   It was so bad the pundit David Burge tweeted out that if your phone rings and it's an 865 area code, don't answer it.   It might be Tennessee calling to offer the head coaching job.

Keeping Pruitt another year is only delaying the inevitable.

Exactly.  Who here honestly believes he will miraculously turn it around in the next year or two?  Based on the FACTS that are plainly evident, not your FEELINGS about the man or your insecurity about finding another coach, what about Pruitt’s performance warrants keeping him around for a few more years on the slim chance he Makes Tennessee Great Again?

Pruitt has done nothing to warrant keeping his job. Not only is he losing , he’s shattering every record (not in a good way) along the way.

I thinks explains the situation we're in when people say who are you going to get.

My opinion is based on my perception of what his players think of him.

or your insecurity about finding another coach

We can keep cycling through coaches every 3-4 years if it makes the entitled minority of fans feel good about what they feel they deserve.

I've said it before but it bears repeating - we have less than half the number of future NFL players on our roster as Georgia, and that will still be true in 10 years.  That's not insecurity - it's reality.  Cycling through coaches every 3-4 years isn't going to change it.

what about Pruitt’s performance warrants keeping him around for a few more years on the slim chance he Makes Tennessee Great Again?

I think he's recruited fairly well, and over the next year or two will find a quarterback to get us over the hump.

I know I'm an optimist, but I'm looking for H. Bailey to have a good game in a win over Vandy on Saturday, and to have us competitive against Florida and A&M, pulling off an upset in one of the final 2 games to temporarily back off the mob.

Between Bailey, Salter and Simpson - one of them has got to be a savior or else Pruitt's goose is cooked.  But if he's given long enough, one of them could help him turn the corner and silence all the Steven A. Smith's out there.

I think it's a very prudent concept.  Pruitt may not improve much next year (and I agree without a pretty good QB the team won't fare well).  But if you end up hiring another also ran because he was all that was available, it doesn't help either.  I suppose Schiano is out?

And the OP's writer thinks Pruitt won't be fired at year's end anyway.

Want a home grown guy that loves UT football and the SEC then look no further.

I would seriously think about Jamey Chadwell at Costal Carolina. He grew up on a farm in Caryville, TN about thirty miles north of Knoxville off I75. He played QB at East Tn. State 1995-1999 also is a big UT fan, even named his son Jamison Heath after former VOLS QB Heath Schuler.

One of the names being circulated to take the South Carolina job.

His Coastal Carolina is currently ranked 15 and 8-0 just beat Appy State.

Is there any farm land left around Caryville?

Pruitt won't be fired this year.
The UT Athletic Department simply cannot afford it.
Simple as that.

Ah hell, why not keep the dipshit for say another 10 years until he finally learns either humility or how to coach. I mean, we don’t want to be seen as a toxic university / team / fan base. We’d rather be known by the media, athletes, students, and fans as mediocre in all aspects. Why bother keeping Neyland Stadium? We should tear it down and build a state of the art stadium to house 60,000 fans that have Vandy football expectations. Why even bother aspiring to ever win another SECE, SEC, or National Championship? Apparently, fans wanting / demanding a top notch HC while the administration hires retards is seen as toxic.

Fuzz, I’m a competitor. If I’m taking it seriously then I’m in it to win. I’m not a big fan of anything that involves luck or anything where I must rely on others that don’t compete with the same fire and passion. I played Football and Baseball and taking a loss was difficult for me especially if one of my teammates cost us the game. Luckily, my teammates had fire, wanted to win, and were pissed at themselves when they screwed up.

I don’t see passion or fire in most of UT’s players or coaches. If there was passion or fire then one of them would’ve already grabbed a few of our players that don’t seem to care and Al Wilson them.
