Games
Friday Night
Iowa at Minny, FS1, 7:30: Might be an interesting game, if Minnesota has figured out how to play defense and Iowa and figured out some offense. The winner still has an outside shot at the West, while the loser is probably done.
Noon
Illinois at Rutgers, BTN: Can Rutgers go even in the conference?
Indiana at MSU, TBD: Something new, Windiana in a game they are expected to win comfortably
PSU at Nebraska,FS1: Two teams that need a win
3:30
OSU at Maryland, BTN: Sneaky good game - is Maryland the team that can give OSU's defense a big test?
7:30
Wisconsin at Michigan, ABC: Can Wisconsin get on the field?
Northwestern at Purdue, BTN: GAME OF THE WEEK
-
Wisconsin can most likely defeat the Wolverines short handed. So they might as well suit up this week.
-
anybody got a list of the players out for Wisconsin if they play this week?
can Mertz actually play this week as 21 days of first positive will be Saturday but his 2nd positive, the one that counted was like Monday or Tuesday and then all the other players were after him, those players cannot be ready to play
-
Does Wisconsin really need a QB? I see little chance of Michigan stopping Wisconsin’s running game.
Michigan’s “speed in space” offense will largely consist of them running off the field after 3 downs.
-
Michigan, Penn St and Nebraska are a combined 1-7 heading into this week.

UW's running game is not what it was last year.

thanks for the reminder, Mr. Obvious
The Nittany Lions have a lopsided edge in the stats matchup, but Penn State opens as a favorite by just four points.

Ouch, Aiden Hutchinson had a fracture in his leg. Tough loss for Michigan

UW will be without 14-15 players this week. Mertz could possibly play, but he can't rejoin the team until Friday. All of the guys who tested positive after him will not be playing. For many, the Sunday after will be 21 days.

What is your general feel about this game? Just happy that the Badgers are playing or thinking more that this season is kind of a waste?
Even if the Badgers lose this game with all of the players missing, I would still expect them to win their other games. Then we get into interesting 5-1 Wisconsin vs. possible 6-1 Purdue or 7-1 Northwestern that lost to the Badgers. I would think the H2H would give the Badgers the edge.

more good news on a Monday!

Very happy they can play again. I don't think they can win though. Too many players are missing.

States that covid cases for Wisconsin are down to 5; 3 athletes and 2 staff. But I don't have a subscription to see if anyone is named or not.

They are not named.
UW won't be at full strength until Thanksgiving.

SEC having some covid issues this week it seems

apparently, it's tough to lock people up

Most places are not naming students (Trevor Lawrence notable expectation), but I feel more often than not staff does get named.
Hope Wisconsin can make it to full strength. As a competitor I would want my opponent to be able to give me his best shot. No one wants to Face Michael Jordan with food poisoning... Oh wait.

UW's run game wasn't great in Game 1. Backfield is a bit thin, line was so-so.
Need that QB, though at this case, I'd settle for just playing a game.

This week's games by current Power Ranking (https://www.cfb51.com/big-ten/b1g-power-rankings-week-3-18453/):
- #1 tOSU at #7 UMD
- #2 IU at #13 MSU
- #3 NU at #5 PU
- #4 UW at #8 M
- #6 Iowa at #9 MN
- #10 RU vs #14 IL
- #11 UNL vs #12 PSU
The thing that jumps out at me is that in five of this weekend's seven games the higher ranked team is on the road. We'll probably see some upsets.
IMHO the NU @ PU game is the GOTW but that is somewhat dependent on the status of Wisconsin. If the Badgers play and look particularly dominant in Ann Arbor then the NU/PU game might be a side-show. However, if the Badgers miss another game they are ineligible for the B1GCG (unless everyone else starts missing soon). If the Badgers play but lose or look shaky then we are back to NU@PU being the GOTW.
The games:
tOSU at UMD: Maryland looked horrible against NU then improved but still not good against Minnesota then they looked phenomenal against Penn State. If that trajectory continues they'll beat Ohio State this weekend and end up winning the B1G and the CFP. I don't think that it will . . .
IU at MSU: If the Hoosiers and Ohio State win then next week's IU@tOSU game will probably host Gameday. In that case it would be a top-10 showdown for a nearly unassailable lead in the B1G-E.
NU at PU: Covered above. This is huge for both because if UW misses another game the winner here is almost assured of a spot in the CG. Even if UW plays the rest of their games the winner of this will have a shot especially if it is Purdue because the Boilermakers missed UW.
UW at M: Who knows what to expect from either team.
Iowa at MN: I think that Iowa was very underrated last week and they still might be somewhat underrated.
RU vs IL: I would guess that it has been a while since RU was favored in a conference game.
UNL vs PSU: Nebraska hasn't looked terrible and if the wind has been taken out of PSU's sails . . . The losing coach might feel some warmth under their seat.
-
#11 UNL vs #12 PSU
pathetic
-
I don't think UW will beat Michigan. Bye weeks are not good normally, let alone having TWO. Plus, they will be without at least 15 players - most of whom we don't know who they are.
Jim's back is against the wall. I expect a solid effort from UM.
-
Jim's back was against the wall last week
-
I think it's time we all admit that IU is pretty darn good.
Seems like football in Indiana (state of) is at a peak right now. IU, PU and ND all unbeaten. When was the last time, if ever, that has happened through this many games in a season?
-
the Hoosiers are pretty good. I think they were pretty good last season.
but, Michigan has a ton more talent and I thought after Michigan's loss to Sparty, Jim would have his team ready to ball.
Well, at least the defense.
I was wrong last week.
I don't think Michigan has much left. Could be similar to Penn St.
Gives me a bit of hope for the Huskers this week vs the Nits
-

Probably more times than you'd think.
Of course if you'd phrased it "when was the last time, if ever, that has happened after the first week of November in a season" it probably has never happened.
But the idea that Purdue and Indiana could be 2-0 and 3-0, respectively, against OOC patsies, while in the same year ND (a historic helmet team) started 6-0, I'd bet you could find a few examples.
The hardest thing would be that Purdue and Notre Dame used to play annually, I think something like 45 straight years, so it would have to be a year that the Purdue/Notre Dame matchup wasn't until at least the third game of the season for Purdue to start 2-0.
-
I think it's time we all admit that IU is pretty darn good.
I'm still not sure what to think about IU.
I'm still kinda stuck on that PSU game a little bit. That "felt" to me like an upset where the inferior team (IU) had a lot of things go their way and barely scraped out a win over the superior team:
- PSU outgained IU 488-211
- PSU possessed the ball more than twice as long as IU
- PSU had more first downs 27-16
- PSU was WAY better on third down 9/17 vs 4/12
- PSU had more yards per pass 6.8-4.7
- PSU had more yards per rush 4.8-1.6
- PSU had an abysmal day kicking (0-3 on FG's to IU's 2-2)
Then there are the turnovers. IU had two and PSU had three which isn't a huge gap, but PSU's were vastly more costly.
IU's turnovers:
- IU's first turnover was a fumble right after PSU fumbled so that is basically just a wash anyway and, in any case, PSU got the ball down 17-7 with just a few seconds left in the first half and promptly missed the chip-shot FG so this fumble ultimately cost IU nothing.
- IU's second turnover was an INT on the first play of their second drive of the second half. PSU turned that into a TD.
- PSU scored 7 points off of IU's two turnovers.
PSU's turnovers:
- PSU's first turnover was an INT near mid-field when PSU was leading 7-0. IU turned it into a FG to make it 7-3. If PSU doesn't lose the ball there they might score and not only that game, but their entire season might look very different.
- PSU's second turnover was an INT near their own goal line while trailing 10-7 mid-way through the second quarter. IU scored two plays later (from four yards out) to extend their lead to 17-7.
- PSU's third turnover was a fumble near the end of the first half that IU gave right back. This was after PSU drove 66 yards while trailing 17-7.
- IU scored 10 points off of PSU's three turnovers.
It just "feels like" if you played that game nine more times PSU would end up at least 8-2.
The Michigan game, however, did NOT feel like an upset. IU flat out dominated that game. Same stats:
- IU outgained M 460-357
- IU possessed the ball almost twice as long as M
- IU had more first downs 28-17
- IU was WAY better on third down 9/18 vs 3/11
- M had more yards per pass 10.1-6.8
- IU had more yards per rush 3.1-0.7 - seriously, Michigan was held to two FEET per rush by Indiana.
- There were no kicking-game SNAFU's on either side. IU converted the only FG attempt of the day from 52 yards and the two teams went a combined 8/8 on XP's.
-
How could Penn St, Nebraska and Michigan all be THIS bad simultaneously?
The Brown Jug is the only win between the three of them. You'd think that one would be up if the other two were down, but that does not appear to be the case.
-
the Hoosiers are up
in the East
are the Hoosiers taking Michigan's spot or Penn State's?

TEAMS LEFT BEHIND IN THE PASSING REVOLUTION
The season continues along a record-breaking arc in terms of some key passing statistics, most notably passing yards per game (238.61 at present) and completion percentage (61.5). But that doesn’t mean everyone can throw it and catch it with increased competence. If you look at the bottom of the FBS passing stats, there are some notable Power 5 teams languishing. Among them:
Iowa (33). Record: 1–2. Pass efficiency rating: 100.88. National ranking: 117th out of 123, and fifth-lowest among teams that have played more than one game. The Hawkeyes came into the season slinging it, which seems like a bad idea in retrospect. Their 90 passing attempts in the first two games were the most in consecutive games for the program since 2014, and the result was just a single touchdown and three interceptions. Kirk Ferentz got back to FerentzBall last week in trampling Michigan State, throwing it 29 times and running it 41. Spencer Petras is a first-year starter replacing a guy who threw nearly 1,200 career passes, so some learning curve was expected. The next four opponents all have mediocre-to-bad defenses, so this is an opportunity to sharpen up that part of the Iowa offense.
Nebraska. Record: 0–2. Pass efficiency rating: 104.24. National ranking: 115th out of 123, and seventh-lowest among teams that have played more than one game. Only one FBS team that has played more than one game has failed to throw a touchdown pass. Take a bow, Cornhuskers. They’ve thrown the ball 65 times, and not once has a quarterback completed it to someone wearing the same-colored jersey in the end zone. Adrian Martinez is regressing statistically as a passer, leading Scott Frost to give more opportunities to backup Luke McCaffrey—most notably with the game on the line against Northwestern on Saturday. We’ll see how long Frost stays committed to a two-QB rotation—perhaps until one of them throws a TD pass.
-
Ohio beat Akron, and Kent smoked Bowling Green.
-
PSU's defensive problems will be cured on Saturday.
-
the Huskers are DOOMED!
-
Welp. Scratch off OSU Maryland.
-
Dammit.
Now you have to wonder about Penn State, who just played the Terps.
-
Penn State better be clean
looking forward to a Husker home game

I too like TTUN in this match up. *ich weakness under Don Brown has been when his CB's Safeties, get beat in a one-on-one situations. Got an accurate QB? Got athletic WR's? Got an O-line/TE/RB that can pick up where the blitz is coming from? you can crack TTUN's defense with that combination.
Just because Wisconsin hasn't played, I don't know if their QB can put the ball into a space that gives his wide receivers better than %50 chance to make those grabs. If the badgers can hit receivers in space then I think they will win.
-
Ouch, Aiden Hutchinson had a fracture in his leg. Tough loss for Michigan
He was having a subpar season before the injury, really thought he was about to take the next jump and go to the next level and develop into a high NFL draft pick. Wasn't happening and then he broke his leg. Feel bad for the kid. On the bright side- he'll more than likely be back in 2021 and the new coach will have a really nice DE to work with.
-

Does it really matter lol? Even if Mertz doesn't play, Wisconsin will still throw for 350+ and a 3-4 dubs on Michigan's weak ass secondary.

The CB's suck this year- honestly I think they are the worst I've ever seen at Michigan. Michigan had really good CB play from 2016-2019. Jourdan Lewis was such a stud. David Long was really, really good. Channing Stribling was so underrated. Ambry Thomas was very good. LaVert Hill was kind of up and down-but for the most part very good. They have NO one on this roster at CB remotely near the level of any of those players.
Don Brown's defenses were continually exposed from 2016-2019 when he would put his LB's and Safeties in man to man coverage, and when OL/TE/RB's could pick-up his blitzes. That's just stupid scheming on his part. When you ask your LB's and Safeties to play man coverage 99.9% of the time instead of dropping them into zones- welp- you are ASKING for trouble. Newslfash: 99.9% of LB'ers and Safeties suck at man to man. That's why zone coverages exist. I will never forget the play Saquon Barkley busted on that go route vs Mike McCray. Barkley is one of the most explosive, electric RB's to come down the pike in a decade plus. Don Brown actually thought it was a great idea to put a guy that's 6'4, 240 pounds and probably runs a 4.9 on his best day in Mike McCray- in single man to man coverage with Saquon fricken Barkley. PSU lined Barkley up in the slot and he ran a go route and absolutely clowned Mike McCray for a long touchdown reception. It was hysterical watching this big clumsy inside LB'er trying to play man coverage on Barkley and get absolutely torched. This is a coaching failure of epic proportions. That isn't even on McCray- that is on Brown for being an idiot with a stupid scheme.
This defense suffers because Brown is a stupid asshole who keeps playing that man across the board zero coverage scheme- AND his CB's suck ass now. He doesn't have CB's like he did in years prior. That's how you get a defense this terrible.

IU should play in the Rose Bowl as the 2nd place Big Ten team every 50-55 years. (Actually there was a 3-way tie for 1st in 1967).
-
Indiana, Purdue and Minnesota tied for the championship that year.
It is the last time IU and Minnie did that.
I was born in 1967. I don't remember the championships though.
-
This is the first time in Big Ten histroy that Indiana, Purdue and Northwestern have all been simultaneously undefeated after week one.
-
No one talking about the OSU Maryland game being canceled? or am I not looking in the right place?
-
what's to talk about?
no game, no fun
I'm just hoping that Maryland didn't spread it to Penn State during the game last Saturday.
Don't want Penn State to cancel trip to Lincoln, don't want Penn State to bring COVID to Lincoln

I'm supposed to be going to celebrate my FIL's birthday and get there at 4:30 PM PT.
With this, I'll at least be able to watch the first half and maybe some of the third quarter before we leave, cutting down the amount I'll have waiting on the DVR after we get home. Otherwise I'd be settling in for a late night to finish the game.

After Maryland was forced to cancel its football game against Ohio State this weekend because eight of its players tested positive for the coronavirus, all eyes turned toward Penn State.
The Terrapins beat the Nittany Lions 35-19 last Saturday at Beaver Stadium, so it raised the possibility that COVID-19 could have spread to Penn State.
“I hate to say anything before it’s all done, but up to this point we haven’t shown any of that, knock on wood,” Lions coach James Franklin said Wednesday night. “I hate to say that because I see all these programs and coaches say things and then it all changes in 24 to 48 hours.
