Where is Wisconsin? Why is Wisconsin not here?
The simple reason is they cannot be here. Sorry Purdue.
Have to mine the freezer today. Scallops, shrimp. Maybe make some homemade fries.
There is a storm coming (maybe) and I've got no Genny yet.
-
I'm going to warm up with some coffee then hit the store. Grilling something today - not too many 70 degree Saturdays in November up here. All that talk about hot dogs makes me want get some.
-
A hot dog would be good, like right now.

I’m trying to decide if I should save a little money, which I spent too much of. Or if I should go get a nice sandwich at a restaurant I like to support a local business.

Not in the cards today but I'm not sure which is better, a good Reuben or a good Cuban. I'm pretty sure those are the best sandwiches, though a BLT can make a case.

The little harbor shop here makes a wonderful Rueben. Had one at lunch the other day.

This is the first real threat this year, which is odd.

There is a part of me that wants to shelter through a hurricane, despite the many warnings that this is a bad idea

Yea they liked the other side of the Gulf this year.
You'll get used to it.

We are going to stick around. We're about a mile from water, and at elevation 18. Anything above 11-12 is generally safe.
When we were looking here, I made "friends" with the floodplain manager at the County. She was sending me elevation certificates for all the places we looked at.
And yeah, I'm a CFM (certified floodplain manager) too. :)

Picked up some chicken breasts and smoked provolone. Gonna do a chicken parm. Trying to decide if I want to do a side of pasta, or make garlic bread to use for a sandwich.
Bigger decision is what to drink today. It's supposed to hit 82 in my part of Florida. Might make today a screwdriver day.
-
it'll be 75 and windy here in the upper midwest - about the 5th straight day of mid 70s
should be golfing, but Husker football is more rare than 70 degree golf in November, so........ looking forward to a good game
I'm setting up another IPTV box in the front room to accommodate the Hawkeye game
gonna try roasting some bacon wrapped pickle spears in the oven - should pair nicely with a bloody mary and a beer back
after that roasting some egg rolls and bacon wrapped little smokies!
-
Noon games
Michigan at Indiana, FS1: Definitely watching this one. Didn't like how Indiana's offense looked in the first two games, but then no one liked how Spary's offense looked against Rutgers and they still gave it to Michigan, so we'll see. Penix has a rocket arm, should be interesting to see if they attack down the field like MSU did. Michigan tyring to get their offense going - should find running easier against the Hoosiers.
Nebraska at Northwestern, BTN: Northwestern quietly in good shape in the West. Nebraska showed some good things against OSU, can they repeat that effort against Northwestern? NW defense is strong, this good be a decent game.
MSU at Iowa, ESPN: Tough to say a lot about what these teams are, other than no way Iowa will put their corners in press man coverage every play. Can Sparty score anyway?
Arizona State at USC, FOX: Finally the PAC arrives. USC is thought to be improved, I guess we will see if that has any merit.
-

Didn't know you could get Gennessee down there.
Oh,sorry didn't know that was Genny, good luck.Do you have a basement or getting out of Dodge

Reubens win, but it was close as the Cubans took them to OT.

Never cared for a Reuben, but if you put a Cuban in front of me I would get down into a three point stance and just fire off on that thing.
-
Might make shrimp fried rice this evening, maybe. I fear I might be turning off the TV around 5:30 PM anyway.
A;; our shrimp are frozen of course but if I cook them from raw they are not bad, the precooked ones are crap. We had some nice Italian last night on a patio. I probably need to govern the dining out a bit.
-
I like a good Reuben about as much as any sammich. Some are not good though. Your favorite sammich?
Hmmm.
Well, you have to have good bread of course, that is major, because every sammich has two slices of bread.
I might go for smoked turkey and ham and bacon with spicey mayo and avocado slices and fresh tomator. I'd call it a STHBSMASFT.
-
I'll mention again for you 40 somethings how hard it is to regain physical conditioning in your 60s. Best not to let it lapse, as I did.
I had to stop running after my surgery for two months and really fell off, I'm just not recovering some conditioning. I'm still limited, no pushups yet. I have learned the critical nature of warming up and stretching now anyway. I got an Apple watch for the Bday, as did the wife, and we have fun competing with it.

Italian Beef.

I think a Reuben is probably a more polarizing sandwich. Not sure everyone likes the sauerkraut or the dressing, and a lot of people don't like Swiss cheese. But I like all those things.
It's a lot harder to find any polarizing ingredients on a Cuban.
-
Italian Beef.
Hard to beat. Am I excommunicated from my Chicagoan heritage for preferring it with cheese?

Don't Cuban's have swiss? The ones I've had were with swiss.
-

I sometimes do cheese. At the place I used to go, I'd ask for it on garlic bread, dipped, giardiniera and sometimes mozzarella, and toasted.
-

Hmm, maybe so. I never felt the cheese was itself a dominant flavor in the Cuban so I never noticed.
-
Lots of people don't like pickles either.
-

Hmmm.
For decades there was an old style deli about a mile away.Smoked meat and cheeses hanging everywhere large ceramic crocks of pickled everything. The owners family also had a bakery. They made a Sub-sammich they called a poor boy,not a PB in the N.Orleans sense/way.Any way it was on a 10"French roll/bun and like a trip thru europe smoked goulda & swiss cheeses, slices of prosciutto, smoked bavarian ham, fresh roast beef, pastrami, turkey and a combination there of.there was another cheese layered in there.different lettuce - like a spring mix and some absolutely fantastic vinegarette :cheer: :celebrate: :098:.Seriously if I had had a last meal that would be it.Place closed about 25 yrs ago as a devoloper put in some of the $$$ homes in the county.I still think about those Hero Sammy's but a buddy who worked there in High School knows how to make them and he runs a kitchen at a Health care facility. So I have that going for me but I don't like to inconvenience him when I get the hankering

Italian Beef.
Those look pretty damn good as does that Baltimore Pit Beef. This old Greek Guy used to run a few Gyro Carts by a popular pub right off the Freeway.Cops/Fireman use to stop there all the time.Cops never bothered you when you left either as long as you weren't "over served".

Salami or no salami?
-
I was informed that places on the gulf side do Cubans w salami which was news to me. Never saw that before. Is that just a narrow regional niche? I've never been to Tampa, probably the largest MSA I've not been to in US.

The only food item I detest is liver. I had forgotten about gyros, I like them very much, almost as much as hats for bats.

Gonna be a chill weekend here.
Last night saw my brother again, this time with the kids. All had a good time. My wife is "angry" that she likes his wife so much, given the history, but it seems like the rift that f'ed up the last 3 1/2 years is going to be healed. So that's good.
Annoyed that it's a sleepy, rainy, weekend, and Purdue doesn't have a game today. I have no plans other than watching football and cooking some pork chops tonight, and Purdue is idle.
Yet next Saturday I'll be going to dinner at my father-in-law's place for his birthday, which is of course when Purdue and Northwestern will face off in a night game. That will make 3 for 3 in Purdue games this year where my plans have interfered with at least some portion of the broadcast. But today, when I've got NOTHING on the schedule, Wisconsin canceled.
Oh well. I guess that means that I don't have to watch a shorthanded Wisconsin team with a RB behind center rush for 520 yards on Purdue in a rout.

Nope. Stupid gimmick, not in the running for best sandwich.
You don't get to be best sandwich when all you are is a boring deli sandwich on white bread because you threw a side dish on it.

I would not want fries on a sammich, they'd get soggy quickly.
I might get me a Willy Philly here shortly.

What region is it where the common term for a Sub Sandwich is "Torpedo"?
-
Oh, guess I totally missed this thread with the crazy title.
Poor Wisconsin, will they ever get to play the foosball again?
-
Piggying off the "what is a sandwich" debate. To be a proper sandwich, one must have:
- Two slices of bread (duh)
- cured meat (while uncured meat can be on it, it must contain cured meat)
- a crunchy vegetable (lettuce, pickle, what have you)
- a special sauce (mustard, mayo, something mayo adjacent)
-
You guys eat mayo?
:a102:

Cured meat is required? So a roast beef sandwich isn't a sandwich? A grilled cheese isn't a sandwich?
-
I'm reminded of the waitress who asked me how I wanted my smoked salmon cooked the other day at brunch.
I was confused.
Speaking of which, a smoked salmon sandwich can be quit something. The wife doesn't like capers, I do.
-

A roast beef sandwich made with cured roast beef is a sandwich. One made by just slicing some beef you grilled is not. The reason I parse it this way is that when I say I'd like a sandwich, I'm talking about something you would get at a deli, not just whatever you can slap together on bread.

I like that you at least took a stab at a rigid definition. I don't necessarily agree or, rather, I have some questions that need clarifying. But it's at least a stab establishing a baseline, so well done, sir.
1) Two slices of bread, sure. But what about the kinds of sandwiches that come on a deli roll, like a hoagie or grinder or submarine sandwich? What about a BBQ staple, either pulled pork on a bun or chopped brisket on a bun? These aren't burgers, even though they're on a bun.
2) So a baked turkey sandwich after Thanksgiving isn't actually a sandwich? And a pulled pork sandwich isn't a sandwich? No cured meat on either of those.
3) Plenty of sandwiches don't have any vegetable at all.
4) Sauce? Hmmmm maybe so. Are we counting oil as a sauce?
-

Smoked salmon is cured meat, so carry on. Capers are a great crunchy veggie. Cream cheese is a perfectly acceptable special sauce. All the ingredients have been met.
-
The cured meat thing got me. An Italian Beef is a sandwich.
-

Add red onion.
-
Pulled pork isn't cured, chopped beef isn't cured, BBQ or baked turkey isn't cured, and all are used to make real, actual sandwiches.
Pretty clear we're not going to agree on that criterion, but at least Max took a stab at a definition.
I'm interested in the takes on TWO pieces of bread. Do open-face sandwiches not count? A Kentucky hot-brown is a helluva sandwich, but only one piece of bread. And then of course the large category of sandwiches based on hoagie rolls, not slices of bread. And then the Bun Conundrum.
-
Back to the original debate, man, it's tough for me to name my FAVORITE sandwich. I like Cuban sandwiches but only without pickle, so is it really a Cuban? I love a good reuben, absolutely love it. Italian Beef and Philly Cheesesteak are tasty, too.
And there was a place in Minneapolis that served the most amazing Meatball Sub I've ever had. That was a special sandwich.
-

1. So it's a worthy question. To me, a proper sandwich means the bread is a part of it. A sub sandwich has a definite form that tells you something about the bread in the sandwich. That's different than just putting whatever between two pieces of bread and calling it a sandwich.
2. I don't think so. Don't get me wrong, I love putting random things on a bun. But if I say I want a sandwich, I'm not thinking BBQ, or thanksgiving turkey. If I'm eating a BBQ sandwich, it's because I wanted BBQ, not because I wanted a sandwich. If I'm eating a reuben it's because I want a reuben, not because I want sauerkraut.
3. Vegan sandwiches have no meat. I don't want them either.
4. I would say so. It can't just be the oil you used to crisp the bread - it needs to be enough to add a bit of wetness. Oil and vinegar is an awesome combo on a sandwich.
-
So, what do you call these things w/o cured meat?
Sodvampires.
-
no sense putting filler in a good sammich
taters don't belong on a sammich or burger or hotdog
rice doesn't belong in a Willy Philly
-
And oh man, Mexican Bakeries and Carnicerias also tend to have this magical concoctions called a "torta" which is simply a Mexican sandwich. One of my favorites is commonly referred to as the "Chilanga" which is a reference to its origin on the streets of Mexico City. It's made on housemade bakery bread, not unlike a french bread roll, and it includes breaded steak, ham, Mexican chorizo, and cheese.

An authentic Mexican item that actually includes cheese?
Far out.
-
So, what do you call these things w/o cured meat?
Slop in a pocket.
LOL I dunno - my point is when I say I want a sandwich, I don't want just whatever you can fit between two slices of bread. If I told my wife I want a burrito and she brought me turkey, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce wrapped in a tortilla, she could technically call it a burrito but we are still getting divorced.
-
An authentic Mexican item that actually includes cheese?

Not sure if this is sarcasm or not? Lots of authentic interior Mexican dishes call for cheese. Not the same cheeses we put on Tex-Mex, instead it's the traditional Mexican cheeses like Queso Fresco, Cotija, Asadero, Oaxaca, etc. All depending on geography and regional preferences, as well as application (Asadero is good for melting, Queso Fresco is crumbly and good for... well... crumbling).
-
Anyway, I won't be having sandwiches today. Rather I'll be grabbing some tacos from a little taqueria on the way over to my brother's house, to watch West Virginia beat the crap out of my Longhorns. Sucking sucks.
-

The only common roast beef I know of that's cured are corned beef and pastrami (although maybe I'm missing one). Most roast beef isn't cured.
I have to think the cured meat criteria is untenable.
Plus, hot dogs (often) and sausages (often) are cured, so you could unfairly include them in an attempt to restrict the criteria.
-
My definition for a sandwich is pretty loose.
A sausage patty between two pancakes?
Sandwich.

So this is a fair point - I love some good roast beef in a sandwich. Pretty much all cold cuts have some sort of cure, but roast beef, on its own, is not traditionally a cured meat, though I agree that thinly sliced it can be part of a sandwich.

The "authentic Mexican" that is sold out of food trucks and taco stands in the USA never includes cheese unless you ask for it specifically.
Then they look at you as if you were an individual that was ordering ketchup on your Chicago hot dog.

USC ain't what they used to be but their offense is still loaded with talent and plays a tough scheme so all things considered I'm pleased with the defensive effort so far. Not perfect but not terrible. Outside of a couple plays the Sun Devil offense has been pretty cold so far.

He’s down 10 points to freaking Indiana and in Year 6 he just lost to a horrible MSU team- AT HOME- that had just lost to Rutgers and was breaking in a new coach.
What makes anyone think this guy will keep his job after Ohio State drops 70 on him and beats him like a drum?
He is done.

I don't know why Michigan insists on playing this zone defense. They have been torched all game. The CBs aren't helping, they have had some interference penalties.

The very MWC team that propelled him to Wisconsin in the first place.
The truly one bright spot on that hire is that he gave us Dave Aranda, who changed the defense from a bend-don't-break 4-3 to a very aggressive 3-4. Wilcox and now Leonhard embraced it.
The second best bright spot is he left after only 2 years. He'd have run the program into the ground. Barry knew this, and would have let him go anyway. This way, no buyout. It worked very well for UW.
-

He is finished. To be honest with you he hasn’t seemed into the job for a couple years now. I truly think he’s on meds and it’s neutered the crazy, passionate, fiery asshole he was that got his guys going. Now he’s just a spaced out weirdo. He doesn’t have that edge anymore. And that’s what made him because let’s be honest the guy is subpar when it comes to scheme/personnel/game management.

I don't know why Michigan insists on playing this zone defense. They have been torched all game. The CBs aren't helping, they have had some interference penalties.
Because when they played man last week- Rocky freaking Lombardi shredded them on deep balls. Their CB’s suck. Doesn’t matter what scheme they play.

Man under with 2 safeties to help overtop would be better than this. It's painful to watch, especially on 3rd down.
-
ASU's top CB Jack Jones out with cramps and USC taking advantage.
-
Serious question- how much does Ohio State score vs Michigan this year? I legitimately think they’ll drop at least 70 points on Don Brown and this defense. I honestly think they could even get to 100 if they went for it. Olave & Wilson are future 1st round picks. Fields is going to be a top 5 pick in the draft. Michigan’s secondary is going to get annihilated.
-
USC goes for it on 4th and 1 on the ASU 8 and LB Merlin Robertson stops USC 2 yards short. Hell of a play.
-
ASU passing game has been ineffective (surprisingly) but thankfully found a running game. 215 yard on the ground vs USC through 3 quarters.
-
How you feeling about the Edwards hire, Frog Face?
Looks promising, after looking so damn weird. Sometimes failed NFL coaches have good runs in college. This looks like it could be one of those.
Pete, SoS, Saban. It's possible, if they can start pulling in the top state players and dip into California and Texas.

He winds up losing by only 20, vastly exceeding expectations, and gets an extentsion.

Wolverines looking a little better. 31-21 in the 4th

Indiana taking plays out of Purdue's playbook, pass, pass, pass, punt, leave plenty of time on the clock with a nice lead in the 4th.

I'll admit I was quite skeptical at first, especially since it seemed like our AD was simply hooking his old buddy up with a job (Ray Anderson used to be Herm's agent way back in the day) but despite no immediate extraordinary results on the field I'm definitely feeling good about it.
Herm has taken the right approach, he's more of a program CEO and motivator who let's his assistants do the large bulk of the coaching. He realized you need to recruit to compete and hiring Antonio Pierce out of one of SoCal's best HS programs (Long Beach Poly) has been easily his smarted move. Hiring Al Luginbill as a talent/recruit evaluator has been huge too, he has an eye for the 3 star kids who are likely gonna blow up. Herm's biggest mistake was promoting Graham's WR coach Rob Likens to OC when he took over, who showed soon enough he was in over his head. Thankfully he rectified his mistake and nabbed a much better OC from Boise St (Zak Hill).
Long story short: Herm has been trying to rebuild the ASU football program from the ground up, hired recruiters in his assistant ranks, and has us headed in the right direction.

To be fair, he wasn't left with much to work with.

Oops, I posted in the wrong SoC thread:
Not sure what is up with Michigan's D. The Hoosiers had ~300 yards on the Wolverines IN THE FIRST HALF. Against the Nittany Lions they only had ~200 yards in the whole game including OT.

Northwestern still undefeated
-
Northwestern still undefeated
And STILL THE NU!!
-
All the talk about USC being good looks bad. Or, maybe ASU is better than people thought?
-
Is McCaffrey still on Michigan?
-
Oh man Va Tech blocked a field goal and returned it for a touchdown to win against Liberty...but didn't, because they called timeout. Then Liberty made the field goal and won the game.
-
So far I'm pleased with the game plan Marvin Lewis (still can't believe he's our DC) came up with on defense today.
My biggest disappointment has been our passing game but with out top WR going out with a rib injury early it's somewhat understandable.
-
Oh man forgot ole Marvin landed there

USC TD on a fluke deflection, lol

Another pick for Milton.

Well poop

Another pick for Milton.
And it is over for the Wolverines. Indiana is up 17 and running out the clock.
-
Is McCaffrey still on Michigan?
Nope. Transferred over the Summer.
-
Well poop again.
-
Not too surprised by the Hoosier win. If the Wisconsin game is on next week it may be a fair fight if Michigan gets their tackles back.
-
Nope. Transferred over the Summer.
To where?
-
He is finished.
He is not the same that's for sure and it could be meds
-
OSU might throw the Indiana game so they don't have to face Purdue in the CCG... Especially if Rondale returns.
Nope,don't get mad get even
-
Slop in a pocket.
She'll represent herself - and win!!!

I have not heard. He opted out first then transferred. Maybe sitting it out in his living room in Colorado.

Twelving alert in Jacksonville: Florida is up 31-21 before halftime. Trask has 300+ passing yards on the vaunted UGA defense.

Yeah, I tuned in with ASU up 27-14 and WOW.

Georgia would be such a different program had they benched Fromm and gone all in on Fields in 2018. They made a huge mistake sticking with Fromm who was never anything more than a game manager with a below average arm.

The IU game was what it was, but could this be a case of OSU beating them twice?

I am trying to wrap my head around Penn State being 0-3. They started with a top ten ranking.
The first two games - understandable. Being completely unable to score on a Maryland team that gave up 48 to Northwestern is something

So the next three games for the Buckeyes - Rutgers, Maryland, and Indiana, were widely thought to be a lull in the schedule. Now looking like the toughest three weeks.

Rutgers with the cross field lateral on the kickoff. Rutgers ready to play

Irish up 10-0 on Clemson

Good game so far.
-
Buckeyes with the rare fake punt against Rutgers
-
Wow, that wasn't on the FR QB, Etienne literally just gave ND a TD.
-
Fields sometimes does things that are mind boggling. Wow

So Clemson curb-stomps ND with Lawrence, right? If the Irish eek this out and get full credit for it, screw that.
-
So Clemson curb-stomps ND with Lawrence, right? If the Irish eek this out and get full credit for it, screw that.
It's kind of an interesting question - what constitutes "full credit" this year? Not sure it matters. Win or lose a 1 loss ACC team is in the playoff
-
That backup quarterback for Clemson looks amazing to me!
-
Meanwhile, Rutgers kick the living shit out of Ohio State in the second half in every way you can. Made them look terrible.
-
So Clemson curb-stomps ND with Lawrence, right? If the Irish eek this out and get full credit for it, screw that.
I'm not sure, the big backup QB has played pretty well
there are many reasons Lawrence might have missed a game this season besides COVID
I am enjoying the game in South Bend
-
Northwestern and Indiana have huge advantages over the other Big Ten teams. They are acclimated to playing in front of small crowds.
-
Gee, then I wonder why he's the backup QB, lol.
It's been a good game. Officially Twelving in South Bend!
-
well, hopefully the starting QB is available for the inevitable rematch

then we can judge how much better he is than
29/44 439 and 2 TDs

How much of the playbook was available to the OC?

I told you that hiring Todd Graham was a mistake. Everywhere he's been in charge, he's left the program in lousy shape. He's a lying "faith, family, football" piece of crap.

Sorry, Froggy. I was rooting for your Sun Devils too.
-
Congrats to the Fighting Irish.
I thought that Kelly should have gone for 2 at the end of regulation, as I figured that Clemson was the better team and that would tell in OT(s).
But it all worked out just right. Notre Dame outplayed Clemson in OT.
About Lawrence being out, that's the breaks of the game. Maybe he should have been more careful.
And the backup QB looked pretty good. Better than the vast majority of starters looked today.
-
Yeah no excuses for Clemson. They were up 7 twice with a chance to close it out and couldn't do it. The defense has not looked as good lately.
-
Texas A&M might be pretty good, maybe.
-
What would be more 2020 than ND winning a conference title during the only year they will ever be in a conference?
I just threw up in my mouth.

Dude,
You're a bit sensative
wasn't necessarily disagreeing with you.
I stated, "I'm not sure"
then stated, we will possibly find out in the inevitable rematch
If Clemson with the starting QB blows out the Irish by 28 points in the rematch, I'll certainly agree with you.
heck, the Irish might be missing a few starters for that game
-
What would be more 2020 than ND winning a conference title during the only year they will ever be in a conference?

I couldn't really root for the Irish, but didn't want Clemson winning another game or going undefeated either
was weird

Gotta pull for Mack Brown and his orange slice brigade to upset the domers in a couple of weeks then. :)
-
Texas A&M might be pretty good, maybe.
I definitely think they're good. Many of my aggie inlaws and friends have complained about Mond for the past couple of years, but all I ever saw was a good QB with a terrible o-line. This year the o-line seems to be much improved and, unsurprisingly, a QB with time to make decisions, looks a lot better.
-

I still think they’re more top-15 in actual quality. But this year is weird and things are opening up.
-
There defense had been suspect but certainly looked the part yesterday. Cocks had 150 yards of offense. When will they put Muschamp out of his misery?
-
I still think they’re more top-15 in actual quality. But this year is weird and things are opening up.
It's a weird year for sure.
It's easy to say "they're no better than Top 15ish" but the actual question is, who's better than them?
In the B1G, the only team I see that's likely better, is Ohio State. The other helmets in the B1G are a dumpster fire and Wisconsin, who is usually quite solid, hasn't been playing football games.
In the PAC, well, no way to know right now but I wouldn't put any PAC team ahead of the ags right now.
In the B12... errr... yeah they're better than anyone in the B12 to date, although OU is looking a lot better now than they did early on.
In the ACC... well, I'm comfortable saying Clemson is better when they have Lawrence, and Notre Dame is MAYBE better?
In the SEC... this is going to sort itself due to the 10-game schedule. Alabama is demonstrably better, as they've already proven it on the field. But the ags have already beaten Florida. And Georgia lost to Florida so although I don't believe in the transitive property, it's tough to say that Georgia is definitely better than A&M, and it's reasonable to think that A&M should be ranked ahead of the Bulldogs. And then there's LSU who is... not good.
So above, in all five P5 conferences, I've listed 4 teams that I'm pretty sure are better, and a couple more who might be equal. That puts the ags in the 5-7 range.
-
In the SEC, I'd have A&M at 2, Florida at 3, and then a drop off with UGA at 4 (duh) and then another drop to It Doesn't Matter State U.
If UGA could find an offense somewhere it might help the defense a bit (duh). They might try a different QB next week.
-
The truly one bright spot on that hire is that he gave us Dave Aranda, who changed the defense from a bend-don't-break 4-3 to a very aggressive 3-4. Wilcox and now Leonhard embraced it.
The second best bright spot is he left after only 2 years. He'd have run the program into the ground. Barry knew this, and would have let him go anyway. This way, no buyout. It worked very well for UW.
This is the fascinating thing, because his tenure was one where the good was actually pretty good, but the bad was deeply weird.
The good
-The aforementioned 3-4
-The offenses at the time felt kinda underwhelming, but in retrospect, that might've sold them short. UW wast 32nd in offensive points per drive in 2013, and had maybe the most consistent Joel Stave (he had good play-makers). The next year's offense was a mess passing and ended up 17th in points per drive despite the third-best offensive play-maker being a RB who was injured late in the year, and the fourth-best being a change of pace QB.
And the OC, a journeyman with a weird rep, turned around and got Vandy kinda spicy on offense and now Utah. And he was a compromise hire because Barry wanted pro-style, and there's like six total OCs that fit that bill. And that went better than it should have.
-He was a breath of fresh air from Bert who was a party boy early, oft-standoffish and abrasive and even when he was nice kind of a weirdo. I'd been told Anderson seemed like a much more normal chatty guy, at least in public settings.
-His recruiting has a bad rap, but looking back, those two-ish classes he had produced a pretty good set of players
The bad
-He turned out to be a weirdo. He insisted on a QB who couldn't throw, which managed to piss off everyone on the roster. Kids always love the backup, and in this case, they were fighting for the limited game manager starter. That led to a fight with Melvin Gordon mid-LSU game, a de facto benching and an inability to explain it. Then of course he quit suddenly after a terrible game, which wasn't even like a planned Barry push out (it was coming, but the timing was weird)
-He had that insistence on wanting JUCO kids and kids with troubled backgrounds. Not even superstars. To a degree I get it, but I never got picking it as a hill to die on.
-His staff had issues with recruiting injured linemen and not developing the batch he was left. That staff actually recruiting some good ones, but they also left a not super group for Chryst.
-The RB acquisition was poor and the WR acquisition was just OK, though the late Bert staff had the latter problem. QB additions were a BIG issue as well.
At the time, I didn’t necessarily think he was gonna run the program into a ditch because I think Barry’s stewardship is big. But now, with how things blew up in his last two spots, I’m notably less certain. He feuded with his boss (I heard the new guy is often not thrilled, but he knows how the world works), and while his last two lost jobs have been at super hard to win places, they’ve come in weird and ugly ways. In general, I’m happy with what UW got from him long term and a little sad he couldn’t keep things together to be the coach I hoped he could be
-
There defense had been suspect but certainly looked the part yesterday. Cocks had 150 yards of offense. When will they put Muschamp out of his misery?
I think that says more about SC at this point. It's kinda like when Jake Fromm UGA smashed bottom half of the SEC teams and you thought "Is this real, or does it go up in smoke against the best?"
-

Maybe it's just a consistency thing. They've been really good on offense three times and better than the final score output once, kinda not great twice. They've been really good on defense three times, pretty not good three times.
But they've won one bad defense game and always managed to match the bad offense or defense games with one another. Maybe when the stats flatten out (their so noisy with so many teams at like two games), I'll get a better feel. If it were last year, they'd have been 34th in scoring and 47th in scoring D, and that feels unlike a team that might be on the verge of being top 10 (and that's after a 48-3 win).
I guess it's a little like how they were much better than the 7-5 regular season record, they project to be 8-2 or 9-1 and they just likely won't be quite that imposing.
-
How much of the playbook was available to the OC?
Ya think maybe ND was focused on stopping RB Etienne?
Don't express 2-dimensional thinking just to disagree with me.
I mean, Notre Dame had like its second-best offensive performance of the year this weekend. That strikes me as the real issue.
I'm sure having Trevor over DJ would've changed things, but the kid is ridiculously talented and probably ends up a super high draft pick. Clemson's offensive day wasn't far off from the playoff meeting the teams had and much better than the 2015 meeting.
But you gotta defend.
-

I'm not comparing them to past history or some hypothetical idea of what "good" is, especially not this year. I'm just comparing them across the college football landscape, to the other teams that are playing football right now.
I think overall this is sort of a "down year" in college football, which is to be expected given all of the external factors. But in this "down year" I don't see 10-14 teams that are better than the ags so far this season. I might not even see 5 teams that are better.
As always, it's easy to say so-and-so doesn't look like a Top 10 team-- until you try to rank the teams that are better, and then you have to judge THOSE teams for all their flaws and warts, as well.
-

That's true, and I'm certianly not arguing there are 10 teams that have done more than them, just that they don't seem to be playing to the level of a team that usually gets to where they've gotten.
But, they have a back stretch where they can certainly play to that level by kicking the hell out of everyone.

Cincy and BYU are both better than aTm.

They have Tennessee, Ole Miss, LSU, and Auburn remaining on the schedule. That's not a murderer's row by any means, but if they're truly at their historical mean, then they'll drop at least one of those. But I'm not seeing it.

This is the first time ever that OSU, Indiana and Northwestern have simultaneously began league play 3-0.

I don't know if they'll drop one, but if one of the first two is close and LSU is really close, that's not a good showing.

So does it look like Wisconsin can play this coming weekend?

I was wondering earlier, did PSU let tOSU beat them three times?

Indiana delivered the body blows, OSU dealt the mortal wounds, and Maryland was the buzzard picking at their carcass.

If Tulsa was splattering the ACC like that with a similar talent base, I'd also say nice things.
(I don't think they'd do "better" because I don't know what better means to you. I don't think they'd have a better record. But I also think A&M is playing a tad ahead of its quality. So we shall see. )

I think one would win a lot of money offering odds to name the smallest (by enrollment) participating FBS school. I don't think it is as lucrative as challenging someone to name in chronological order Rickey Henderson's career path by franchise, but not too many are going to guess Tulsa in the first five or ten guesses. The freaking high school in the city I live in has more students.

The Detroit News says the Wisconsin @Michigan game is on for Saturday night. Maybe Michigan can pull out a win like in 2008.

I wonder if you'd say that if it wasn't Cincinnati and it was Tulsa. Something about the midwest turns all rational thought into silly delusion.
I said that both Cincy and BYU were better than aTm, moron. Last I checked BYU isn't in the Midwest.
You seem to have gotten your order of operations mixed up. You are supposed to read first, then respond. Not the other way around.
Imbecile.

UW will be missing 15 players. If Michigan can't win this one, it's time to pull the plug on the coach.

My guess it's the abundance of Peyote in the SW or the sun baking your dome

They would do better than aTm va that slate.
I was citing this post, which was a response to my post about Cincinnati only.
Imbecile.
Yay! Name-calling is fun!
