Title: A Pox on All Your Houses (SOC 10/24/20)
Post by: MaximumSam on October 24, 2020, 07:58:10 AM
It's been a long, hard, cruel, boring, exciting year, but we finally have some B1G college football to watch.  We have one game in the books, and Wisconsin suddenly looks like a real contender if their QB can go 20/21 every week.  Illinois, not so much, so I guess it wasn't the most surprising result in the world.

It's a cold morning in Columbus.  After yesterday was warm and almost 80, we had rain and storms all night, and a wake up to 45 degrees.  While I would have liked some grilling weather for an OSU game, and I can also roll with soup weather.  I think I'm going to go with chicken n dumplings today.  Let some stock simmer for much of the day should make the house smell warm and nice.  Through a few logs in the fireplace, turn on some football, and fall has finally, officially, completely arrived.

The schedule

Noon
Nebraska at OSU, FOX
Rutgers at MSU, BTN
3:30
Iowa at Purdue, BTN
Penn State at Indiana, FS1
7:30
Michigan at Minnesota, ABC
Maryland at NW, BTN

Other games of note
Cincinnati at SMU, 8 pm, ESPN
ND at Pitt, 3:30, ABC
Auburn at Ole Miss, noon, SECN
Iowa St. at Okie St., 3:30, FOX

A pox on my horses? - no Race Track for you.Hope tOSU - 'Skers is a good one and injury free. And of course Big Red played yesterday. And it appears they found a Joe Montana clone at QB.Find out more when he gets a little pressure but impressive none the less

My thoughts on each game:

OSU v. Nebraska: Obviously intrigued on how OSU looks.  When I did the position previews I was shocked at how thin Nebraska looked at several positions.  This is a mismatch on paper but COVID can be an equalizer.

Rutgers v. MSU: The intrigue game.  I won't be watching because OSU will be on, but MSU seems like a complete mystery.  Rutgers has a new offense and a new Schiano - could they possibly pick off Sparty?  I'm just curious as to what these teams look like more than the actual result of the game.

Iowa v. Purdue: Iowa seems like the rock, so don't think they will be too surprising.  Purdue was interesting, but now the coach is out with COVID, Rondale Moore is out for unspecified reasons, and it feels like the wheels are coming off for Purdue before they even run out the gates.

PSU v. Indiana: Very intrigued by this game.  I've been bullish on the Hoosiers, but in the back of my mind it seems silly to ever claim the Hoosiers are going to be good.  PSU shgould be improved with a real OC, but Micah PArsons and Journey Brown are gone.  Upset?

Maryland v. NW: Meh

Michigan v. Minny: Another really fun game.  Michigan's defense is strong, but has some pronounced holes and we will see how they fill them.  Minny has a strong QB, a big line, and a first round receiver.  The weather will be cold and this could be a really fun time.  We also get to see the Joe Milton experience against a rebuilding Minny defense.  All fun.  Really happy to have OSU at noon and two bangers at 3:30 and 7:30.  Makes for a fun day.

I've said it before, Indiana seems to be perpetually on the verge of a breakthrough but they never quite get there.

You guys think that 45 degrees is too cold to grill?

Heh I've grilled in some cold temperatures.  But sitting outside drinking a Great Lakes and watching the game is also part of grilling, and I sure as hell ain't doing that when it's 45 degrees.

Not sure what's cooking yet. Still have some more stone crab, a good lunch.

Probably going to make some chicken.

Our kitchen is not done. Countertops come next week. That's been the holdup - the China thing hit the manufacturer in Cali. I can't wait until it's done. Been using an infrared camp burner and a propane camp oven. It's getting old - 5 weeks now.

I've kinda viewed Indiana and Maryland this way. They get a couple elite players and 1st string can compete against anyone, but then 1 or 2 injuries and the lack of depth rears its ugly head.

I'm ready for this..........

22 degrees, high of 36 - that's why the grill is in my attached garage

Bloody Marys, little beef smokies, cheese, and chips early

Fish fry at a Hawkeye fan's garage later - perch and walleye

Lutheran Church's annual soup and pie supper at 6:30 - pickup only

hoping the Huskers give the Bucks a game, beat the spread, maybe keep it within a couple TDs

It's 66°F here already, going to be warm, with late afternoon showers apparently.

The wife likes this weather a lot.  I don't think she has ever complained about the heat that I recall.  And of course October usually has splendid weather here.  The leaves are just starting to change a bit here and there.  The big sycamore outside my window has some yellow on it.

The city is sometimes called "City in a Forest" because the residential areas are all tree covered, which is nice.  I was thinking of driving around in the NW area when the leaves get colorful, the area with a lot of impressive mansions.  I'm amazed that so many folks have that much money.  And of course other parts to the south are the reverse.

It's a beautiful 78° in my part of Florida.

Heading over to a friend's around 1:00 since he ordered the Gaethje - Nurmagomedov fight.

Lucky for me he's a Florida fan, and they are cancelled today, so will be able watch Purdue vs Iowa at 3:30.

Picked up some Weihenstephaner and Franziskaner.  Wife is making a 7 layer dip, I'm cooking up some bacon wrapped chicken bites.  Friends have a pizza oven we will be putting to use.

Been waiting for some B1G football for a looooong time.  Today is a good day.

It's a balmy 22 degrees and overcast here in the Twin Cities today. Feels like January, not October. Just an awful day.  It will be snowing during tonight's game.

On the menu today is tomato tortellini soup, buffalo chicken dip, screwdrivers, and made from scratch sticky buns.

I’m going to wager that in your case, like mine, your game day menu will evolve given that you are now going to be in very warm weather. It tends to change your appetite.
I can’t speak for anyone else but cooler air makes my appetite more hearty and robust and makes me want things like pasta and carbs

I don't think there is any question about that. I love chili and pot roast, but no way right now. Maybe in January??

Now it's more fish/shellfish than ever before. I've got ribeyes in the freezer that I have no interest in right now.

Probably a chicken stir fry tonight. Maybe some rice, but maybe not. Lunch is set with stone crabs. Need to eat only like 3 of them. Mrs. 847 went big on those. They are huge.

Man I forgot I got stuff for patacon.  Most recipes I see use unripe plantains, but a local place uses ripe plantains which you fry, smash, and fry again, then cover in meat and salad.  Then douse in spicy cilantro sauce.  That's a hell of a dish.  The sweet plantain coupled with salty beef is for my money the best.  The plantains are kind of a pain to source - you need them pretty ripe, which can take forever.

Watched Wisconsin punish Illinois last night. It was strange seeing Camp R empty but really nice to have Big Ten football back.  If anyone out was thinking an edge was gained on Wisconsin due to them having to start a freshman at QB...well you can flush that idea right now.

Nope. No fans in the stands = no tailgating = no buckets today. The schedule scramble did a number on the others in the group, as all save myself are working today. Although our backyard, once I clean up the dog's business, is an ideal spot for buckets.

Yes, yes, yes! Never pursuing Narduzzi never made any sense. Wisconsin hired the .500 Pitt coach before him and look how that turned out. Narduzzi would've given East Lansing his all, stayed long term, and provided a lot of stability in a manner that had expired on Dantonio. I'm not surprised MSU is losing to Rutgers. @ELA (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=55) and I went back and forth in his countdown thread about this - but the Spartans, IMO, should be view as about the 12th or 13th best Big Ten team. Now I'm thinking 14th. Aside from a few isolated talents, the roster is thin, and the coaching isn't experienced enough.

It's a letdown watching/rooting for Texas, even up 27-3 on a below-average Baylor. When it comes to high Longhorns' expectations, the season is already shot thanks to a 1-2 conference start that includes blowing games against rivals TCU and Oklahoma. But even watching their more disciplined, methodical showing Vs a sleep walking Baylor program, you just see Tom Herman is getting by with Ehlinger carrying the offense, for better or worse. Even if Herman salvages this season into another year of employment, is next year already an uphill battle without Ehlinger's default leadership.

Yup, pretty much all this.

IF the Horns manage to hang on to a win here, it might be the last one of the season.  KSU, ISU, and OkState are all better teams than Texas.  WVU is probably an even match.

It’s a shame they’re only like 50 people in the stands because this would’ve been the first time in decades that IU had been able to storm the field for a win.

I dunno always been an advocate of giving a team 1 call a QTR (just in case).Just break for fookin' commercials when they do as to not prolong games.Anyway I've seen 3 very bad calls that should have been reversed. One in the K-St vs TCU game where a reciever caught the ball his knee was down his toso was down he then rolls completely over and a db rips the ball out and the ref rules it incomplete. The ref should have been ruled incompetent and bounced. You can't be that bad and let calls like that stand.Literally changing the course of the game.Fortunately KSU held on.

Excuse me.

"Blowing" means losing a game you had won or easily should have won.  Neither of those was the case in the RRS.  Texas made a great comeback to score 14 points in the last 3:34 to send the game to OT.  And it went to 4 OTs.  Texas did not "blow" the game.

I'm going to have to call these games "sixing" - just because it's half of "twelving."

"Sixing" is when the winning team has a single-digit score.

Notable "sixing" games are in 2011 - LSU's regular season win over eventual NC Alabama 9-6, when WF played someone and it went to OT 0-0 a few years ago, Auburn and LSU played a 7-3 game in the early 2000s, and Arizona's desert swarm losing to defending NC Miami 8-7, missing a 50+ yard FG at the end.

I have been shamelessly promoting it here.  A friend in Boston is actually reading it and claims he likes it.  The wife said my sentences were too short for her (!!) initially but then it got more fluid.  I'm 26,000 words into Book Two now.  I'm enjoying it anyway.  I flip the script at Chancellorsville.

In 1858, a young Virginia lad heads off to Virginia Military Institute for study. He comes to the attention of an unusual professor there named Thomas Jackson. Boy meets girl, falls in love, gets engaged, but in the interim war breaks out and he is called to be junior aide de camp to now General Jackson and participates in his Valley Campaign, is injured and misses the Seven Days, but returns in time for Antietam and Fredericksburg. Intended to be in the style of Bernard Cornwell, whose writing I could only hope someday to emulate.

Not sure what to think about Michigan yet.

Love what I saw out of the tackles. Ryan Hayes and Mayfield look like surefire NFL draft picks to me. Both these dudes will play on Sundays. They have four good RBs that all bring something different to the table and compliment each other well. They are young at WR outside of Ronnie Bell, but they have so much speed there. Giles Jackson, AJ Henning, and Roman Wilson all flashed elite acceleration and speed.

Erick All looks REALLY promising at TE. Joe Milton is super talented and played well, but really wasn’t asked to do much. He had some nice throws, but also some inaccurate ones that were a light high, behind, or overthrown. Talent is there clear as day for anyone to see. He’s gigantic and can move, and his arm strength is ridiculous. He can just flick his wrist and shoot it 50 yards in the air on a frozen rope. Have to develop him more though. He looks promising, but it was one game. He needs to clean some things up and continue playing well for an entire season. I will say this though- he flashed all the raw ability and talent that could make him a very high draft pick if he develops. He is gigantic and can really run with power and speed, and his arm strength is ridiculous.

I was impressed.  Harbaugh finally letting go of the 1970s offense and actually developing a program QB, instead of shopping for one.

in Minnesota’s defense they were severely impeded by their coronavirus losses. You could tell it hurt them badly to not have a kicker or a punter and to not have their starting right side of the offensive line but I still think Michigan beats them soundly.

Things might be setting up nicely for the Wolverines this year with the Wisconsin quarterback looking like he won’t play when they get together with Michigan.

No Covid, Nubbz, just busy.😎

I'm teaching a military history course I built over the summer, and it's a big time-sink on the first live run-through.
If I had the time/coin might have signed up for it.Any specific Era or area?

Offense looks promising and if not for a few missed fg’s, dropped td’s, and shoestring tackles/trip-ups where there was nothing but green in front for a Michigan offensive player- Michigan would’ve put up 60+ points; on the road- in a night game- vs a ranked team- in the season opener. That shit just doesn’t happen for Michigan in decades if not ever- so it does give me some hope for them going forward.

They have to figure out the FG kicking and clean up and fine tune some things on offense- and they’ll be just fine.

I’ll believe in Milton when he does it for an entire season. But so far so good. And his raw talent is obvious to anyone with a set of eye balls. That’s easily the strongest arm I’ve seen a Michigan QB possess since that single season of Ryan Mallett. Plus the dude is 6’5, 240+ plus and can really run. He could wind up being a really high draft pick if he develops.

This offense would be a lot better with a 6’4” Nico Collins snatching deep balls and going up for fades in the red zone. That definitely still stings and might bite them down the road.

Defensive secondary also clearly missing their #1 Corner and a guy that would’ve been a draft pick in Ambry Thomas.

Michigan would be a way different team with both those guys.

Looks interesting.

Does it not come in a paper copy?

It's just a HS elective course.  American military history from colonial times to as far as I can get by May.  We've just finished the Mexican-American War.

Could be, but until the swab results come back, we won't know. It might not come from CPC, but it will get leaked.

The Gadsden Purchase?
Comes along 5 years later (1853), but we dicussed it in the summary of territories gained via that war.

The Gadsden Purchase was pretty much solely to build the Southern Pacific Railroad, or so the southern interests in Congress thought.

Lotta complicated politics.

I can't post this on the top UW CBs thing because it's locked, but the two UW Badgers guys picking Antonio Fenelus as a top corner for the decade is ... well, I'm not as down on media guys as most, but that's a pure media guy pick. If you went with him, just go with Devin Smith.

Fenelus was very much a JAG who got some picks. The best pass defense he was on was a bend-don't-break secondary that was always given leads. Bleh.

(He's now part of the UW coaching mafia, so I wish him luck)
