Title: Freshmen you think will make an impact for your team
Post by: Cincydawg on July 27, 2017, 08:10:37 AM
Often, we see 1-2-3 frosh come "out of nowhere" relatively speaking and not only start, but be a game changer.  Does you team have one?  I don't think UGA does despite a good recruiting class.  They have too many starters coming back, though we may have one starting on the OL.

Alabama did last year at QB, which is a bit surprising when you think about it.  Florida might do that this year?

there are several linemen coming in that i hope will get some game time this season and perform better than UT's last line's have... one on D I'd watch is Maurese Smith- he's a big fella and can handle himself pretty good for being young.

the QB i'm most curious about is Jarret Guaranttano... he's a redshirt returning, and he has a huge upside.  Monster arm, good form, accurate, good decisions, fleet with feet...

he's behind Quinten Dormady on the charts..... well, last I heard... it's a pretty fierce competition.

Yeah, but does he have the eye of the tiger?

this season's going to be really special- UTk will devour gators, elephants, dawgs, tigers, et al...

aaaaaaaand yet in the real world....

i think they are going to surprise a few people and be more competitive than imagined, but.... too many holes to fill and too little experience where it matters.  the defense fell slam apart last season due to injury and lack of bench- i also think chemistry was seriously impacted by drama with one particular player-dona.  the most important ingredient is questionable, and unless Kongbo really explodes on D they don't really have an anchor.

CBJ has a burning arse, and there won't be much margin for error- but that is exactly what he needs- margin to get the younger linemen and secondary some experience.

they play GT right off the bat... which, on the account of that offense, is likely the better time to catch them rather than being sandwiched between to pro-set type O's... still, unless that anchor in Kongbo explodes like every UTk fan has been waiting for, it's gonna be a long season.

I think Maleek Williams is the real deal at RB. With RawWill gone, a 2nd running back will have to step up.

Maleek has overcome the biggest obstacle a freshman RB faces in a Pro style offense, he knows the blocking schemes already and can catch the ball.

And this young man is fast!

From what I saw at the spring game, Najee Harris might be the best rb that Saban has had at Alabama and that includes two Heisman winners. He will be heard from.

those are some strong words, Joe... as you know i'm a fan of the game before all else, and no matter who it is or who they play for, I appreciate watching the game played well.  I'll keep my eye on this kid for sure.

It's great to see both you and just1hog here, gents!!!

Didn't another Bama RB transfer?  That may support bamajoe's words.

For Florida, I'm expecting one of the few incoming 4* CBs to play a lot and do well.  I don't know which one, but there are a few that are good enough to get playing time and keep it.

UGA must find at least one offensive tackle that can control SEC dlinemen. So Thomas or Wilson, 2 top 50 recruits if a wish list is allowed.

a little early for that. i suspect he'll get some touches this season, though. and that in itself it a big accomplishment with the returning rb talent on board.

not a frosh, but a new comer from juco, de buggs will hopefully make a good impact on the dline. with the losses to the nfl the last 2 years, we are seriously thin on dline. starters should be normal bama good, but what's made the last 2 dlines great was the depth, which i'm not sure we'll have this year. unless buggs and some others step in right away.

Chase Hayden is a frosh RB at Arkansas. He came in over the summer and moved past Maleek Williams in the first week of practice. He's super quick and way too strong for a 190 lb freshman. David Williams transferred from SCe and he's impressed.

Make or break year for Bielema and he on it

Najee Harris appears to be the best pass catcher out of the backfield which is surprising since Bo Scarbrough spent time as a WR in high school.  So he may carve out a role there.  Remember AJ crawling all over Henry in the first game of the year?  Let's see if Najee can pass protect.

I saw Najee get caught from behind in the spring game, something that never happened to the 2 Heisman winners at Bama

As far as an alternative, I'd go with Ruggs as a returner or Jeudy finding his way into the WR rotation

For UGA, Andrew Thomas is likely to start at RT. He's a good one, but can he acclimate to SEC football quickly? Hope so. Wouldn't be surprised if one of the other 2017 signees find their way on the field at some point by mid season.

Richard LeCounte at one of the Safety positions looks more and more likely as camp progresses.

RB signee D'Andre Swift while he won't be a starter for obvious reasons has drawn rave reviews in camp and the coaches feel he'll be someone they can't keep off the field.

A redshirt Freshman to watch--Mecole Hardman. After an experiment at CB, looks like his home will be on the offensive side of the ball in the slot and as a return man. Excited to see what this kid can do.

You're right, for some reason i had forgotten that he played some last year. Still expect his role to be expanded. He needs to have the ball in his hands.
