Title: Home Field Advantage?
Post by: Popeye on October 09, 2020, 06:58:51 PM
To me, one of the best qualities of college football is the home field advantage.  Is there any way to incorporate home fields into play?  I know when Penn State or LSU plays at home, there is a decided advantage for those teams.  What is everyone's thoughts?

We didn't put that in, but one idea we had was that in certain home stadiums, the first field goal the visitor made didn't count.
It stinks, but the road team would want to go ahead and get that out of the way early, as if they're needing a FG late, it won't count unless they've made one earlier in the game.  That would make it so they don't avoid it and would account for the 3 point home field advantage used by Vegas.

We'd love to hear other ideas.

How about the home team gets one re-roll of the dice per half?

We'd like for any "house rules" to be shared out by game players and the best ones sort of rise to the top and if popular enough, maybe even make it into the game's guide book.

As our customer base grows, so too will the game player community.

I was thinking about Home Field Advantage, and one idea I had would be to kind of combine some things:

1. For penalties, add one more die value that would only pertain to penalties on the visiting team. Like the "1" value would be a visiting team penalty universally. That way, there's just that slightly larger chance the visiting team gets penalized on every play, which I think is accurate for football.

2. For kickers - you could subtract 5 points from their makability number, so it's just a tad bit harder to kick those pressure field goals on the road.

Those are the things that immediately jumped out to me as possibilities to give a slight edge to the home team.

Those are really good ideas.

Another one someone shared, and it's pretty tough, is that the road team had to score TDs within the 10 yards of the end zone.  So a 30 yard completed pass from the 18 yard line wouldn't result in a TD.

I really like your penalty idea.

I'm anticipating the arrival of my game, but with my other football board games I allow the home team to use 1 yard in their favor, per half, for whatever circumstance.  Say the home team needs 8 yards for a first down and only gains 7, then the homers can play their 'one yard card'.  Conversely the opposing team has 3rd n 5 and gain 5 yds, then the home team can play that 'card' and make it 4th and 1.  Also can use the 'card' on kickoffs, punts, all returns, and FGs, {+/-}
