Title: TX-OU 2020
Post by: utee94 on October 05, 2020, 04:01:22 PM
Maybe some of our Sooner friends will check in here, if I make a separate thread for it?

Cousin Fred, you out there?

Not sure what to say about the game this year.  It's Hate Week and this might be the least excited I have ever been about this game.

It's not just the way the season is looking for both teams right now,  but also the cancellation of the State Fair, this weird year, everything all combined.

And of course, sucking sucks.

I just hate making too many bold statements. The Universe loves to smack me down. I try not to deliberately get it looking my direction.

That said, I'm interested in seeing a few details:

1) Sooners defense versus the right side of our OL: The OU defense is hot garbage. The only reason they don't miss more tackles is because they're nowhere near the ball. It's shockingly bad. Texas could take advantage of it, if they can make any combination of players stand up on the right side of their OL. Thus far, there's been, charitably, flashes of promise in mostly a sea of "that was my guy" type blocking. Defenses know about Sam Cosmi on the left, so they make Texas go right. Texas needs to make that a viable option.

2) The Texas defense versus Stougner or whatever that FB/TE guy's name is: Considering the lack of usual debug games and practices, I have faith the Texas defense is getting it together. Their biggest weakness, though, is a huge liability coming up. The middle linebacker has to get figured out, because OU's most reliable security blanket is the lumbering FB or TE Stougner. He's actually a smaller version of what Iowa State will hit us with later. He represents a free 7 yard gain if Texas can't coordinate its MLB play any better than has been shown.

Spencer Rattler may grow to be an all-world QB one day. Thus far, he's a talented QB no better than what Texas high schools churn out regularly. This game is largely mental, and the mental can only be learned by the doing. He hasn't done enough yet.

Texas has more talent and more experience. They have less fatal flaws, but significant ones. The Sooners are staring at a program changing game. Win, and it's a matter of fixing mechanics and growing youth. Lose, and the finger pointing starts to question Lincoln Riley's ability to win without the Stoops Troops and helicopter delivered QBs.

So, pretty much, Texas is DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED.

I think coaching makes the difference here, and unfortunately I think Riley & Co. are just much, much better than Herman and his staff.

I think this ends up a poorly executed, broken-play, bad defense, 52-45 kind of game, and I think the hated Sooners win.  Again.

Sucking sucks.

I think Maybe, Maybe, the Horns run the ball at the sooners

some running with the QB

so I'm not taking the Boomers and the points

So if Texas lucks out and wins will that mean they have the better coaching staff?

I don't think Riley is a demonstrably bad coach. I just think he's been living off a residual shine. Heck, I think Stoops lived off that shine for about 5 seasons.

Alex Grinch, the DC, however, has some ground to make up. I know we're living in interesting times, and Texas own defense isn't a brick wall, but Grinch is demonstrating a pattern of cluelessness.

If you promise me the Texas right OL performs to industry standard, and the FB/TE has less than 7 catches, I'll take Texas by 17. I dunno why you'd promise me that, though.

Both teams could be unranked after the game.  I wonder when that last happened.

Texas is a curious program these days, to me.  They upset Georgia a couple years back in a major bowl game when UGA was pretty good.  So, "they're back", except they weren't, at all.

Texas was a really bad match up for UGA. The Dawgs were an NFL ready team that wanted to establish the run to hit the pass. Texas ran right by them with smaller guys, took advantage of early breaks, and put UGA on its heels the entire game.

A team that's "back" has multiple stars at every position. Texas had a good player here and there. When injuries happened last season, they had no answer, since they relied on multiple layers of intricacy to flummox opponents.

We can't judge this season yet. There isn't a team out there who's had time together long enough to build position groups. Right now, we should be worried about teams "not looking all that good against" or "struggled at times with" some compass named cupcake. Now, the Big 12 is playing conference games against teams that know them really well.

I think Texas has the right coaches and coordinators now. They just need time together to congeal.

You should take your score-predicting talent to Vegas.  Or Monte Carlo, maybe.
I've been too busy teaching in the Year of Covid, with new textbooks, and a new course in Military History that I developed over the summer, to post on CFB51.
But I wanted to drop in and comment that Sam Ehlinger is one stud hoss.  He deserves better coaching than he has had at UT.  I don't particularly like him, but I respect the hell out of him.  He put his team on his back today, and it was almost enough.
On the only board I have time for these days--a private OU board--I predicted that Texas would kick our ass, and that if it came down to a close game in the 4th quarter we would collapse and Sam Ehlinger would run the ball down our throats.
I'm glad that I was only 2/3 right.
Hell of a game.
Good luck the rest of the way.
Maybe OU and Texas will find some way to meet in the CCG and have another go at it.

Are Texas fans panicking yet?  Will they?  Weird season, write it off?

I wouldn't call me "panicked" because I expected the loss.  This is a bad football team.  Squeaked by a bad Tech team, lost to a bad TCU team, and now this.

Sam's a good player, but not really a transcendent one.  Or maybe he is and the coaching and execution around him aren't helping him out.

Either way it doesn't really matter.  Right now I'm not sure I can even see a path to 5-5.

COVID will probably protect Herman's job this year, so I anticipate more of the same next year.

It's probably a "good year" to have a bad season, in a sense.

Asterisks and all that.

Yeah.

Overall I'm still glad there is football this year, having games is better than not having games.  I just wish our product on the field was a lot better than it is.  The offense tries hard and just executes poorly, while also having unimaginative and predictable play-calling.

The defense is completely unwatchable.
