Title: How are things where you live?
Post by: Cincydawg on August 31, 2020, 10:42:38 AM
Do you like it generally?  What don't you like?  What's your favorite thing?  How's the weather?  What would you change if you could?  Are you thinking of moving?  If so, why?

Austin is terrible.  Ugly women, beer is illegal, there are roving gangs of organ-harvesters that will steal your kidneys and leave you in a bathtub full of ice, and a green mist that blankets the city and will turn you inside-out.

How 'bout you?

I generally like where I live.
The weather for 1/2 of the year.
The freedom to live as I wish, do as I want (within the confines of the law and the respect of my neighbors).
Great for part of the year, but too hot in August and too cold in Jan-Feb.
The weather.
After I retire, I could see having a winter home somewhere in a southern state. But I would come back to Ohio in the spring, after most of the snow has stopped. Thinking mid April.

I spent a summer in San Antonio. They warned us about you folks in Austin. Outside of a Grateful Dead concert, I avoided that town. :)

Do you like it generally?
Yes.

Quote
What don't you like?
High housing prices / cost of living, high taxes.

Quote
What's your favorite thing?
The weather.

Runners-up would be things like the wide diversity in people, in geography [literally the old claim that you can be skiing in the morning and surfing in the afternoon/evening is true, although it'd be a long day], in culture / the arts, etc.

Quote
How's the weather?
See above.

Quote
What would you change if you could?
If I could have kept the house I bought in 2010, I would have a better house for less money than I currently pay in rent. Alas, it was worth it considering the other baggage I unloaded in that "transaction".

Quote
Are you thinking of moving?  If so, why?
Yes. Primarily due to housing cost / taxation.

I like it here.  My favorite thing is walkability, in that I can walk anywhere I need to go.  (We do drive to places like Costco).

There isn't much I don't like that I can think of.

The weather is nicer than many suppose, our hottest day this summer was 94°F.  Humidity is usually less than it was in Cincy, which I thought had hotter summers than here, just shorter.  Spring and fall are glorious of course which is true most places.  We have something blooming nearly year round.  And the place is very green, lots of trees, many pine trees which stay green year round of course (except when they are yellow).

Housing is pretty expensive in midtown, a newer 2 bdr condo is half a mil or so, which is higher than most places outside the coasts.  Sales tax is nearly 9%.

I mentioned to the wife if we won the lottery I'd stay here, which is mostly true.

For the season, yes. The boat sold and the closing is on 9/22, subject to inspection. Then we'll go to Florida and hide out for a while.

We will probably go back to Kenosha next year.

I love it here. The downside is the cost of housing is obscene, and takes up an ridiculous portion of my salary. Currently the air is smoky. That sucks.

Upsides: geographically pretty, consistently strong economy (with generally low poverty rates) in this region that has better weathered economic downturns than other parts of the country (and state), mild weather year round, easy access to great leisure spots (professional sports, cultural enrichment, wine country, scenic beaches, mountains, forests, ocean, rivers). And Los Angeles is far enough away to be far away, but close enough to be a cheap airfare or long drive if we want to experience the things it has to offer (it's not just bad traffic and materialism down there--though there's plenty of those, too). Specific to my hometown: walkable, bikeable, community focused (strong engagement in local organizations), diverse, excellent public schools (and plenty of private school options, if that's your thing), easy public transit to get to job centers, close enough to the primary job centers that I can ride my bike there (and I generally have for the last decade or so), good parks and rec offerings, great library, and two cute downtown-ish areas. And at the micro level, I love my neighbors. This block is awesome.

We have strong roots here--and SFIrish is building what looks like a promising political career, so she can go wreck everything by trying to make things better. ;-)

Having said all that, if the financial pressures were to become too great, I would happily move to southern Wisconsin; Madison or a suburb/exurb of Milwaukee. But it is cold there.

Columbus, specifically Westerville. I live next to a man-made lake, which is nice, except they just started a 2 year project to upgrade the dam so my morning walk is marred by a lot of chain link fence.

The weather is just fine, depending on how mild the summer and winter is. The rolling seasons and unpredictable weather makes me happy.

The area is very pretty and parks are everywhere. I do wish there was a pub among the neighborhood instead of in commercial areas, but one can dream.

No  plans to move though my wife hates the cold so could happen some day.

Three of us hailing from California so far - @SFBadger96 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=51) & @bwarbiany (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=19) ???

I live in Southern California and generally like it, mostly because I call the Southwest home, and I'm only a half-day's drive across the desert to the rest of my family in Phoenix/Tucson. The biggest obstacle from going ahead and moving back to Arizona is that I work in an industry that ties me to the coasts. I recently weathered five long winters on the East coast, and given the milder weather, plentiful sun, the people less impulsively occupied by status and career ambition, and the general proximity to breathtaking landscapes, I'll vouch for living on the better coast.

Yes my rent is awful, as everybody assumes, but it's no worse than what I put up with Washington DC and further north. That's the most personal drag to my way of life - the high costs/taxes. Notice I say personal because what else concerns me about California are negatives that are not directly personal to me. For example, California's cities have outgrown themselves and the negative consequence is highly visible in the growing homeless populations from San Diego, LA, SF, and up through Portland and Seattle. Homelessness out west is the worst in the nation, likely beyond "fixing," and generally the rest of us learn to live with it rather than think of the homeless as a "problem."

To family/friends living out East and across the Midwest, wondering what it's like living in the state with Hollywood and Silicon Valley I answer that California, more than anywhere else I've seen in the US, is the Land of Haves and Have-Nots. Living in a residential high rise, I do well for myself at a hundred feet in the sky. But down at the sidewalk level are dozens of my homeless neighbors living out of tents and fighting various addictions.

I've lived in the San Francisco Bay Area most of my life, except college and my 4.5 years in the Army. Homelessness has always been a problem here, and has gone in cycles. The mild weather is part of that. Your haves/have-nots comment isn't far off, in my experience, and has been getting worse in the Bay Area, again, because the cost of living is so high and because there are so many high-paying jobs. However, for all the people who appreciate their high paying jobs, they still want to be able to eat out at restaurants, get their cars fixed, have emergency services, have quality public schools, and generally have other services available to them. That's an interesting economic problem, exasperated by the housing limits.

The Bay Area, more than other areas, is geographically constrained, and the suburbs have been staunchly protected/limited in growth by zoning laws. In the last two decades, it has become much more fashionable to live in the big cities, but rent control, prop-13, and other property-rights issues have prevented even San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose from allowing much growth. The state legislature is on the verge of forcing California's cities (including the suburbs) to build more high density housing. That will help, but not solve, the cost of living issues. And frankly, home owners like me benefit from the cost because of the equity built up (once you get on the escalator). I'm not especially worried about the higher density housing impacting my property value as people will still want to live in single-family homes, where possible, but there are lots of people freaking out about it.

Do you like it generally?
Yes, a good bit

What don't you like?
Lacks some of the diversity of things of a big metro area. Dating scene is not great for someone past 30. Salaries generally don't get super high outside having certain high-end skill sets (Dr., probably engineer), which I don't possess

What's your favorite thing?
Relatively small but dense downtown, reasonable drive to a bunch of places, pretty good food and ability to walk about.

How's the weather?
Stupid hot. Would prefer cooler, but don't like snow.

What would you change if you could?
Better dating scene for someone my age. Maybe make it a little cooler. Higher salary ranges would be nice too, but I'm a good saver.

Are you thinking of moving?  If so, why?
Yes. Mostly because I think it would make sense to be somewhere bigger when looking for a partner, plus the possibility for more income. I was at one point in a relationship I felt good about and mostly felt fine living in this spot forever. Oh well.

I live in the Phoenix area (Thank God not in Phoenix proper).

I love it here, would not want to live anywhere else.

The weather is great year around. Even when it is above 115, I enjoy it.

What I don't like about it, is the distances across the valley. It is not unusual for me to have a football game in the West Valley and I live in the east valley and have a 45 to 60 mile drive right at rush hour traffic.

There are times that I miss the crisp fall air, particular when officiating a game on Friday nights.

The wife and I are talking about purchasing a summer home in Maine near the beach and spending our summers there. Problem is, I told the wife I have to be back in August because I am not ready to give up being on the football field.

If could live anywhere, it would probably be Mendocino or Lake county, maybe Sonoma, but that is getting touristy.  Calaveras county would make the short list.

I would jump at the chance.

Ha.

But I don't want to get tagged with the state income tax.  I thought about buying a condo in FL and living there 6 months and converting all my retirement to cash and moving to CA.

If I could live ANYWHERE, income and expenses being no factor, it'd be some tropical island in the Caribbean.

Or MAYBE somewhere along the Med in the south of France, or Spain, or Italy.

Generally I like it here. Surprisingly diverse.  I am within 2 miles of  a small Mexican area, an African American area, 3-10 Million dollar homes, trailer parks, and everything in between. Also plenty of immigrants who bring culture and economic enhancements.  People here seem to get along. 200 yards from the Intercoastal    Plenty of parks, bike paths, restaurants galore, shopping and golf and boating.

I like that we are 30 miles coastal Drive from Palm Beach which has a lot to offer and 2 1/2 hours from Orlando as well.      I like that we have no personal income tax- but that will likely change if this state goes blue.

The weather is good in the sense that you can golf or be outside year round. It’s bad in June- October because it is too hot and humid to enjoy. I do not miss the Michigan winters- but I absolutely miss the Michigan spring- Fall and change of seasons.

Another dislike is the little berg and surrounding area where I live is getting substantially more crowded at an extremely rapid pace.

I would like to work another 2-3 years and hopefully have a place in the upper Midwest for one season and here for the rest.

I can't even fathom that.  I definitely wouldn't get bored.  I'd be so relieved at not having to interact with other people.  A deserted island might actually be best for me, honestly.

We're all different, thankfully.  The things I enjoy are fairly rare on Hawaii outside Honolulu for example, and the tropical island thing does not appeal to me.  I've been to'em and I get bored after a week or so, so bored I start doing integral calculus for fun.

Well, not really.

At least there is a Costco on the Big Island now.

Generally I like it.  Been here my entire life except for a few short stays at college and work assignments.

Favorite thing?  Cost of living, close to family & friends, laid back small town rural life = low stress.  No traffic, few people, midwest folks are easy to get along with.

The weather is turning to near perfect about now.  Fall is fabulous.  The humidity leaves, the frost kills the insects, temps in the 60s/70s during the day and 40s/50s overnight.

If I could change something, I'd be on or nearer a golf course.  About a 15 minute drive to the 2 courses I'm a member.

Thinking about moving because I'm not on a golf course and the winter weather is much too cold with far too much snow and ice.

Maui has a Costco, too, and it's right by the airport, which is convenient.

In a world in which I could afford it and work less, I would have a place in Southeastern Wisconsin, preferably on a lake, that I would visit in the summer and fall, and use to launch to football games, mostly, but not exclusively, in Madison.

In a world in which I could afford it and work less, (winning a huge Lottery)

I'd have a place on the golf course here to visit family and friends, across the river in South Dakota for tax purposes.

I'd probably spend most other nights in Holiday Inns traveling.  Let the maids make the bed and vacuum the floor, and clean the toilet

The wife has said true luxury is living in a very nice hotel.  She knew a lady in Paris that did this, she was getting along in years, and just had a room at some boutique hotel and had room service.

We once stayed at a pretty nice suites motel here in the ATL that was $79 a night, bedroom, living room, kitchen, free breakfast, dinner 4 nights a week, pool, gym, Internet, daily cleaning, TV ...

For my first job after undergrad college, I traveled about 80% of the time.  And when I traveled, I'd often be gone for 3-4 months at a time.  So for almost 4 years, between the ages of 22 and 26, I lived in hotels, with meals on the corporate expense account.  I can certainly agree, it's pretty great.

I could understand when you're getting on in years as a time, but I would find living in a hotel to be much like the discussion we had about living on an island. On an island, I'd just feel "cooped up". Living in a hotel 100%, I think I'd be unable to ever really get over the fact that I don't ever really have "my" own space.

Which is of course not to say that I don't like staying in hotels. While I didn't travel THAT heavily, the years I spent traveling significantly were awesome. I got to see far more of the country [and the world] than I could if I was trying to vacation on my own dime. Did it mean I'd have to have meetings with customers during the day? Sure, but then I'd have evenings to myself to experience the local culture.

And the knowledge that all you're eating on the company dime, not paying for gas or putting miles on your own car, and the only thing you need to worry about is packing your bag at the end of the week and flying home is great.

Of course, those were the days when business travel was my vacation from my needy kids and the wife I didn't particularly like and ended up divorcing. Now that I try to schedule travel around my custody schedule, travel takes me away from the wife I *do* like and it only does it when we wouldn't have the kids. So I try to minimize it as much as possible, and try to build it into weekends where she can fly out and join me for a getaway when/if I actually have to travel.

The new neighbors who seem to have had friends over every night of every weekend since COVID started are Raiders fans.

As insufferable as Notre Dame fans are, I'd rather have elitist snobs next door than the sort of people who revel in their support of piracy.

I moved into my house 2 years ago.  House is still full of boxes, it is the second day of the move. I pull out of my driveway to go to the hardware store and the guy across the street had put up a Michigan flag for game day.  I immediately pull back into my driveway and start going to through boxes. after a couple of boxes I found it. I went out and put up my flag pole with my Ohio state flag. While I am still hanging it, I hear "Oh no you don't"  Here is my neighbor coming across the street.

We had a good laugh, talk a bit. Turns out we are both graduates of our respective universities. Unusual with lots of college fandom.

When Ohio state beat Michigan that year. We went down as a group (we had a game party) and brought him a plate of Peanut Butter buckeyes.

For a Michigan fan, he is ok. :93:

Hawkeyes, not as much.  Of course it doesn't help that the Hawkeyes have been beating the Huskers since before Pelini was booted.

It's all in good clean fun.  I raise the RED flag every game Saturday.

Not sure what I'll do this season........... might have to raise the flay this Saturday in honor of the game vs Purdue that was previously scheduled

"I propose that we as a city remove the name boneless wings from our menus and from our hearts," Ander Christensen said in a satirical speech during the public comment portion of Monday's Lincoln City Council meeting. Christensen is Councilman Roy Christensen's son.

The food called boneless chicken wings don't actually come from the wing of a chicken, Christensen said. "Our children are raised being afraid of having bones attached to their meat. That's where meat comes from. It grows on bones."

In sum: "We've been living a lie for far too long."

Christensen's rant was making the rounds of TMZ, NBC, Yahoo, Newsweek and Fox News.

I'm still trying to scour pictures of buffalo and figure out where they have those tiny wings.

What evolutionary process would cause buffalo to have wings too small to carry them aloft?

I did this as well.  Didn't need an apartment or house, just landed at my Father's basement when back in the area for corporate a few days a month.

I think I could do it again.
With an empty nest, for sure.

No way I could travel like that right now, I'd miss all the soccer games, band concerts, etc.  Not worth it 'tall.

But as a single 20-something?  It was a'ight.

The same process which gave us T-Rexes with tiny arms....the buffalo (biZon) would have had to begun as much smaller animals, with larger wings capable of flight.
But that flight would not have been an advantage, so over time, the wings would shrink as the body enlarged.

Obviously.  :88:

The new neighbors who seem to have had friends over every night of every weekend since COVID started are Raiders fans.

As insufferable as Notre Dame fans are, I'd rather have elitist snobs next door than the sort of people who revel in their support of piracy.
Piratey things are the best!  Well, pre-Capt Jack Sparrow.

This spring will be the first time that I have ever lived anywhere that didn't have lacrosse. That will be weird.

That was always a passage of time that winter was ending. It would start in February and you would just be freezing your ass off in the middle of a blizzard. Then the playoffs would be in May, and you'd just be baking in the Sun. In the meantime, you'd watch a bunch of games in the rain and the wind and the mud, with wildly fluctuating temperatures and conditions.

I am going to miss that.

Yeah, I did move out here last March, but I lived in Columbus up until the point where spring sports got cancelled. I got at least a half a dozen college lacrosse games under my belt by the time that all went down.

Beautiful morning here, sunny, mild, slight breeze.  I think our summer heat has largely broken.

What took you down that way? Can't recall if you said.

Lacrosse always seems like a cool thing, but always just outside of my already strained bandwidth.

The guy who said "Look at me, I am the captain now." Like the character, not the actual person.

We are projected to have our first 100-degree day of the year Monday, then a cold front is supposed to move in and drive us down to highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s, for the rest of the week.
