Title: Pick a team to follow in 2020
Post by: Brutus Buckeye on August 12, 2020, 06:41:14 PM
Let's each, at the bare minimum pick one team to follow that is still planning to give it a go. You don't need to declare right away, but make sure that you pick one before the season starts.

For those that want to take it a little farther, you can pick one team from each remaining P5, the SEC, the ACC and the Big 12 (as of this posting) and keep tabs on each.

If that's not enough, you can pick a team from each division to root for, in the SEC. But if you are going to do that, then post the pecking order. ie: "I am rooting for __________ to win the SEC, and I am also going to pull for __________ to win the opposite division." (It looks like the ACC is scrapping their divisions for a year, with ND in the mix).

And if you really want to go hog wild you can toss in whatever G5 Conferences are still planning to give it a go. I know that the Mac and Mountain West are out, not sure about the others.

I will go first

Big 12: West Virginia
SEC: Ole Miss overall, with Kentucky in the East.
ACC: Virginia Tech
other: BYU

Try to pick a team that hasn't been taken yet, at least if you are somewhat dispassionate about who to select. Obviously Cincydawg will be pulling for UNC and Georgia even if someone else beats him to them, and kris will probably take Pitt and WV iirc, and ELA will probably take Pitt, and Fro Florida. But try and mix it up a little where you can.

Go!

My group, with explanations.

Big 12: K-State

TCU has slipped in my mind. ISU is feisty, but K-state gets weird in the run game. They're a good solid program, make the most of their pieces. I wanna see what that staff does

SEC: I live near one SEC school and pay attention to them, so I'll set them aside and for with Florida

Dan Mullen's offense is awesome. He gets so much out of the talent he has. It's athletes and power and weird. And now they have a pure passing QB and adapted flawlessly.

ACC: UNC

A lot of decent options for my kind of interest between's UVA's weird offense, liking what Norvell does, interest in Satterfield. But I went with UNC. I think the coordinators are great. Their hype has totally outpaced a staff that went 7-6 with a talented roster last year. I want to know if they can live up to it.

other: Does Navy count?

They're already a team I follow, as is Army. If I have to not pick an option or option-adjectent team, La. Tech. I am fascinated by a coach who has found his level of building fun offenses at a small school, raising them to a good level but unable to break past that.

There goes Utee, keeping it weird, as usual.

ACC: Ordinarily this would be hard. (1) I like public schools over private ones, but the ACC is chock full of private schools. Seriously, it's kind of strange for a major college football conference. (2) I have good friends whose kids go to or went to several of these schools (one of them has a kid at Syracuse and another just graduated Clemson). (3) Clemson? Checks the right blocks, but I like underdogs, not those guys.

Oh, that's right, Notre Dame is "in" the ACC. So I guess Notre Dame. Speaking of weird.

Big XII: Iowa State. Because it gives Iowa a run for its money, and isn't one of those Big XII schools I can't get my biased head around.

SEC: Georgia, Auburn, or LSU. Always a toughie for me. I think I'll go with the most mascots/nicknames, and a state where I have a little work right now: so War Eagle!

I always root for Notre Dame and I suppose if I want to recreate my OSU fandom if better go for Alabama. For the Big 12 probably the Sooners because one of my friends is a big fan. And got to look at the Fickells to carry on the pride of Ohio.

UNC

Ive always sort of liked them in football, might have gone there if not for the out of state tuition, Mack Brown has always seemed likable, plus while most schools pretend their athletes take legit classes, UNC went in the opposite direction and said their students also take joke football player classes.  I commend that

Hmm, which could best re-create my MSU fanhood?

Pre-Dantonio, certainly Pitt.  Always up for an upset, positive, or negative.

Super recent vintage, Mississippi State.  All defense, inept offense...except they just hired Leach.

On the whole?  Maybe Oklahoma State.  Solid program, with a middling floor, and a ceiling that at times can be top 10 good, but probably not ever national title good, but no matter what stuck behind a helmet power within their own state as far as national attention goes.

Agreed. The supervolcano under Yellowstone would probably take me out nearly instantly, but you folks nearer the East Coast would have weeks/months of unrest, rape, pillaging, and who knows what else before the eternal winter sets in... That would get unpleasant.

Of course, the problem with any meteor large enough to take us all out is that we'll see it coming. Ever see Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World? Good movie. Tragically beautiful. But seeing society in the last couple of weeks, when everyone knows the end is nigh, is a bit of a harbinger of what it might be if SMOD'2020 actually does kill us all.

‘It snuck up on us’: Scientists stunned by ‘city-killer’ asteroid that just missed Earth

(https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/07/26/it-snuck-up-us-city-killer-asteroid-just-missed-earth-scientists-almost-didnt-detect-it-time/)This asteroid wasn’t one that scientists had long been tracking, and it had seemingly appeared from “out of nowhere,” Michael Brown, a Melbourne-based observational astronomer, told The Washington Post. According to data from NASA (https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/), the craggy rock was large, an estimated 57 to 130 meters wide (187 to 427 feet), and moving fast along a path that brought it within about 73,000 kilometers (45,000 miles) of Earth. That’s less than one-fifth of the distance to the moon and what Duffy considers “uncomfortably close.”

This just set sets up for a disappointing jinx when the rest of the conferences are at risk and under pressure from scared university leadership to cancel their seasons. Anyway, for now, I'm going to adopt Nebraska. We're due for a classic, late-90s burnout between K-State and the Huskers.

Yes, if you pick a team that bows out, then you of course get a mulligan, and you can pick another team from the remaining pool.

For Texas Tech, some notable recent players are:

LB Zach Thomas
WR Wes Welker
WR Michael Crabtree
QB Patrick Mahomes
QB Graham Harrell
QB and later head coach Kliff Kingsbury

Mahomes was a nice college QB, but obviously made more of an impact as a pro.  I think for college impact, Crabtree takes the cake from this group.  2-time All American and had that memorable TD against Texas at the last second in 2008 I believe.

Besides Crabtree (07, 08), here are their other 2-time All Americans:

Zach Thomas (94, 95)
RB Donny Anderson (64, 65)
CB/LB EJ Houlb (59, 60)

Texas Tech looks to be in for another tough year after going 4-8 last year.  They were 41 point favorites against Houston Baptist and won 35-33 on a failed 2-pt conversation late in the 4th.  I wasn't able to watch the game as I didn't get the channel, but looking at the box score shows that it was a pretty ugly game.  11K fans were in attendance to watch HBU roll up 600 yards of offense, which doesn't bode well for trying to stop OU or Texas later in the year.

The good news is that at least Tech avoided the upset, while other Big XII teams lost.  Tech did have a 21-3 lead early in the second half of the game and may have just gone to sleep after that.  Maybe a sloppy game is just the norm for most teams after a COVID restricted offseason.

K-State lost to Arkansas state

UNC had a game canceled. I think La. Tech did too.

Of random teams I mentioned Army is good, Navy is bad, others haven't started.

Navy does play Tulane, another option-y team that is enjoyable. And their coach is the kind who should probably get hired but is a little too old and has an offense that's a little too unusual in the wrong way.
