I don't know the answer, but I know a UW alum said Jack Dunn shouldn't have had the job, which plays out one of the oldest fan complaints around.

Smith-Marsette is the Big Ten’s ALL-TIME leader in average yards per kickoff return.  He should have been the clear pick for #1 but has to be the pick for #2 with Cruickshank getting #1.

Cruickshank and Smith-Marsette had nearly identical KR stats last year, so any argument over who got selected for first team is pretty meh.

Re: #2, with no one else being on their level for KR, and with the death of PR significance (in this conference at least), ISM is an easy choice.
