Title: 2018 Board Meeting - A Revival of Excellence
Post by: 847badgerfan on November 24, 2017, 12:19:17 PM
I'm gonna put it out there. All this talk about Nash Vegas on the OSU/M thread got me thinking. Uh oh.. you said?

Nope.

I'm proposing a revival of one of our finest traditions - a board meeting. In Nash Vegas!!

Vandy is at home on Saturday, November 17, 2018. Not that it matters, but it's there and they are playing Ole Miss. Not that it matters. It is IMPOSSIBLE to not have fun in that City.

Other ideas would be welcome (and let's not be selfish about wanting everyone to come see your own team).

Have at it.

Bold.  I would imagine we could recruit some SEC folks, maybe.   Most of the schedules should be out now.

I know.... I'm a selfish SOB

if next season is as bad as this season has been I will be in Nashville

never been there and it's on my list

Every game will be on TV that day in Nash Vegas.

Badgers play at Purdue. OSU plays at Maryland. I think Minny is at home but I can't remember who against (not a "big" game).

Indianapolis 1st weekend in December?
I think we should try to make this work, in all honesty. It's a good time and we would have an awesome host for the Friday night festivities with MH. There are lots of hotels near his place too, and it's a short drive downtown for the game day and plenty of bars to watch the other games in.

I'm in for a meeting as long as I don't have any prior obligations for the weekend selected and we decide with enough time to secure travel arrangements.

I know better than to make suggestions, as it's a waste of time on my end, lol.

Just put something out there. My only thing with the locations is the easier a place is to get to, the better.

Nashville is easy for many here, as is Indy.

Turns out I just confirmed a cruise this morning, from Barcelona to Miami. We won't be around for that Nashville weekend I proposed as a result. Heh... If y'all pick that date, we'll just have to skype or something.

The last meeting of the minds in Indy was pretty damn good!

Dang, how long is that cruise?  I doubt you will be able to skype while sailing, but maybe technology has come a bit further than the last cruise I was on.
I'd just take a week in Barcelona, I absolutely love that city.

The cruise is 14 days - Barcelona, Gibraltar, Madeira, Bermuda and Miami. Lots of sea days, which I enjoy. We'll start out our 3 week trek in Amsterdam and work our way to Barcelona for a few days there. I love it too.

I wonder if it will be in a separate country by then..

That sounds like an amazing trip, badgerfan.  Just surprised you chose to do it during football season.   ;)

I'm good with Catalonia becoming it's own country, it's an interesting time over there for sure.  I do remember the locals in Barcelona being upset with their head officials way back when I was studying there in 2003, and so I believe this has been a long time coming.

Yes, we get to Miami on November 20th and will be back in Chicago on the 21st. Thanksgiving is the following weekend, then the CCG's happen. So we could be in Indy or elsewhere that weekend.

Personally I prefer destinations that also will have an attractive football game to attend for those who want to check one out. I'm also down to have y'all come down for an ASU game too.

But if we're gonna do a destination without an attractive game to attend Nashville of course is fine, but I'd also like to nominate Las Vegas (CCG weekend most likely) as well.

Sold.

As always with trips like this, thanks for the heads up.

This might not be a readily appealing game, but it's appealing in the sense we'll all be able to get affordable seating together. (Attended a Vandy game back in 2006.)

Also open to other ideas as the board collective decides.

Yeah, so after I posted that idea we booked a cruise from Barcelona to Miami. I'll be on board during that weekend, but as I said, feel free to do it without me, or, option B, we do Nashville for 2019 and something else next year.

It's the board's decision - not mine. I only facilitate these days.

I put @eltigrerex (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1580) in charge years ago anyway. Hah!!

I would like to second the nomination for ASU.
It was a mission of Gatorama's to try and get a game out there, but we had put it off for the renovations to be completed.  In honor of Gatorama, and because I would love to get over there to check out a game, I would be very interested in seeing it happen in Arizona if there is some consensus and interest.
It looks like the home games on the list Gopher provided are the following:
Sept 1 - UTSA
Set 8 - Michigan State
Sept 29 - Oregon State
Nov 3 - Utah
Nov 10 - UCLA
Nashville was fun, but been there/done that.  I would truly enjoy checking out a newly renovated stadium and go to a new town I haven't been to yet.  Of course that is just my input, and I make no decisions around here, but putting it out there anyway.  This will probably be the only suggestion I make on the topic, but regardless of what is chosen I do hope to attend.  I enjoy the Board Meetings immensely, both for the games and for the chance to see everyone, and am looking forward to getting another one on my schedule.

Ehhhhh, September would be fine as well, unless you are afraid of melting or something.  I heard this "Dry Heat" thing is much more tolerable than our muggy-Houston heat, so it would likely be an upgrade in weather conditions for me, personally, any time of year.  ;)
Plus doesn't it cool off in the evening?   I mean, we only have "hot" and "less-hot" over in these parts in September, but my understanding of that part of the country is that it can be summer and fall all in the same day depending on if the sun is out or not.
Was thinking that Michigan St game would have more interest from you B1G folks.

I'm headed out there in April and again at Christmas, to visit family. Otherwise, I'd be a likely attendee. It's a fun place on game day, along Mill Street and some of the tailgating too.

You're comparing some 90 degree temps to a 350 degree oven?  Hahha, oooookayyy.
Well, I'm out then. This is precisely why I said I wouldn't make suggestions, but I did and that's it.  Let me know what you decide then.

The good news is ASU has home games in October and November too.

But if Gatorama can handle a September afternoon game (extremely rare but Right at UGA specifically requested it instead of a night game) then so can y'all.

But it ain't gonna break my heart if y'all decide someplace else too. As of now I'm open most weekends except maybe Sept 22 (likely going to ASU @ Washington which btw would also be a great board meeting) and Thanksgiving weekend.

The only home game I saw for ASU in Oct was on a Thursday (Stanford).
I would love that game as far as the teams, but the logistics of a Thursday night game would be difficult for a big group, I would think.  That's the only reason I left it off my list above.  Looks like the devils are travelling the other games that month.

120.. 350... same thing. :57:

By the way, it's really cold here now, but it's a dry cold - more dry than your freezer even.

Everyone come on up! Ha!

I actually love your suggestion. I was just playing on the heat thing. Tempe is a lot of fun and if I wasn't already scheduled to be there twice this year, I'd most likely go, unless it came during the Europe trip (October 31 through November 20).

I assume we want to go someplace where a board member or two can be the "host"... meaning, help with taking people around or finding things to do.   I also assume big games are out due to price of tickets and getting everyone together.

since this is a big board, do we want to focus on a BIG game?

I went to the ASU@Utah game in 2015 and had a fantastic time. Also getting liquored you wasn't much of an issue at all. Yeah, Utah has some funky liquor laws but trust me, you can still find undilluted beer and booze with ease.

I'm looking at a Utah/BYU doubleheader next fall, trying to study the schedules.   BYU loves themselves some Friday games.

I'd be shocked if MSU at ASU isn't a 10:30 est start.  But man the Herm Edwards experiment, this may be a sight to behold.

My only ASU reg season experience was a Thursday night game (Wedding rehearsal party) a few years ago, long tailgate, followed by UO at ASU 3 OT game,  man did we pay the price for that.

Salt Lake City and Provo may as well be in different states. And yes, SLC in my opinion is very nice. Hotels were reasonable, campus and stadium in a nice setting, good public transit (light rail), all near downtown too. I'd definitely recommend it.

Agreed. I skip them often. And I’ve always skipped the board meetings. I’m going to try to change that this year. We have little one #2 on the way in a few months so I figure Novemberish will be a needed break.

The marquee home game would be Michigan St but that is in September so I understand if y'all prefer November, and the game vs Utah is a solid choice.

Now however y'all wanna pregame I got connections. I can definitely find a tailgate that'd be willing to host us (and have food and booze) or I know a guy who owns one of the bars on Mill and I can see if he can help us secure some space to pregame there as well, it's easy walking distance to the stadium too.

As I've only lived back in the PHX area about 6 months now I've only made it to Mill just a few times and I don't recall seeing that place, but it's more than possible I simply missed it too. Long story short, I'm not sure.

With all the development going on around there lately, I'm thinking that may have been a casualty, given the value of the corner it sat on.

If the consensus is Tempe Nov 3 for Utah@ASU count me in. Am already expecting to be in Phoenix that weekend anyway. Thinking this is likely a noontime kickoff and we can do most of our beering afterward while watching the East Coast's 8pm kickoffs in the sports bars on Mill.

Yo, @DevilFroggy (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=35)  - did you have a preference yet on when you can commit for this?
Either the Sept or Nov game?  Just curious if we can get confirmation of a set weekend so things can move forward with reservations, etc.
I want to be there for sure no matter which date, and don't mean to be persistent but I'm more of an advance-planner when airfare is involved.    The sooner the decision is made, the better, IMO!!

Alright, well I will operate under the assumption that Nov 3rd for the Utah game is the ONE!
If nobody else chimes on what hotels they are looking at, then I'm just gonna go ahead and pick one out on my own and start eyeing the prices for flights.
I'm stoked to visit ASU and the husband-type will be in attendance as well since he has a good friend in the area.

Well, I am in the East Valley and would love to meetup with you all for the game. I've been here for 5 years and still haven't made it to an ASU game. Up until this year, I spent most of my Saturday's officiating a bunch of Pop Warner games and didn't feel much like getting out for an evening game. However, while I am still doing high school games on Friday night, I have "retired" from the little guys on Saturdays.

I have our hotel reserved, and looked at the ASU athletics site which indicates public tickets will go on sale in the summer but doesn't specify which games/dates for sale-release at this time. I have no idea how the "group tickets" work for ASU, but when I looked into that with the USC box office last year for tickets in the Coliseum, they needed minimum of 20 tickets for a group rate.    I will not have the resources to front for group orders purchased in advance, but would be willing to pay my own way for 2 tickets if someone else wanted to check on the conditions of group tickets through the ASU program.   Usually it's a bit cheaper this way, but I'm totally prepared to just buy our own game tickets when I see they are released.

I know some people like to scalp or buy from resale sites, but that's not me, I much prefer to have tickets secured in advance  at face value for events I attend.  If i see any updates on release and/or purchase ours, I will be sure to post the seat info on here for others to order as needed.

I'm 99% out of it.   Ty (who joined us at our infamous Nashville Board meeting), he had the yellow Vandy feather boa on all day at the bar, is getting married somewhere in that week range, and I'm in it.     Have fun guys/gals I'm certain you will.

Well hell if I know if it's the official board meeting, but that's the ASU game I'm planning to attend.
Between the bashing of heat temps in Sept, and more interest in Utah over the MSU game, I just figured that's where this discussion is headed, however DF says he's going to be at all the home games so anyone can go to whatever game they can make it to, it would seem.
Personally, the Nov weekend is shaping up better for me than the Sept weekend, so I have moved on with reserving a hotel for that one.  We also have friends in Phoenix and will be planning some time with them for that weekend, so there's another factor driving my decision on this.  I do not make any decisions for others here on the board meeting, though, so feel free to make a final decision at any time!  ;)

I'm not making any calls given my travel schedule this fall. I'll be all over the place so really any meeting is going to be dicey for me. The only game I'm planning at this point is UNL at UW on October 5-7. It's one of only 3 free weekends on my fall calendar. So this year is probably not meant to be, for me at least.

On November 3, I will be in Amsterdam, hanging out in coffee shops or something.  :86:

Well I got my season tickets, section 214. ASU tickets aren't exactly some hot and rare commodity you need to sell an organ for. When single game tickets go on sell there should be plenty available at reasonable prices, and even in my section too.

Hello, I am still on for the game and just found out that the Single Game Tickets for the Utah/ASU game will go on sale on October 4th.
It is also the Homecoming game!

We have a hotel reserved in Tempe and am finalizing airfare shortly, so I'm all in with the husband-type who will be going with me.
I would love to meet some new people from CFN, and see some familiar faces as well, if anyone is able to join us!     I guess when Oct rolls around, I'll advise which tickets I am able to get and hopefully it will be near SDF's section as well.

Okay, I bought our pair of tickets.  We did not get Sec 214 but the one behind you, as they were nearly half the price.  But you know me, I like to be high!  ;)
We'll be in Section 316, row 14.   If anyone else decides to go, that's were I'll be for the game! Single game tickets are on sale through the Sun Devil athletics website, for anyone who is interested and wants to purchase before that weekend.

Utah @ ASU has been officially slated for a 1 pm kickoff. That said for those attending I'd say we find a tailgate to start the day, head to the game, then finish up at a bar on Mill Ave.

Otherwise tickets should be easy to come by for the game or you can just join us on Mill afterwards.

Yay!!
They still haven't announced the game time for UT vs WVU, but whatever, I'm going to hope maybe it's a night game and I can watch it after the ASU game.
We are all good for tailgating early that day, and I just sent you an email with our full itinerary including flights & reservations for our stay.    If anyone else is going and wants to get together, please let me know!  We'll be there from Thursday night to Sunday.
Really looking forward to visiting AZ and attending this game, I was showing the husband-type the pics of the new stadium last night and he was impressed just from the photos on google.

I guess you can unpin these threads, and I promise not to call badgerpants at 4 am.
Hopefully next year we can set a date where more people are able to come, but looking forward to meeting anyone that can make it in a couple of days for this game!    It's been too long since I've seen DF and us longhorn fans are looking forward to checking out the new & improved stadium after some tailgating fun!

Football meetups and experiencing new atmospheres in the college football world is seriously one of my favorite ways to spend a weekend, and I'm so thankful we have returned to making those connections happen on this great board of ours.  Big group or small, old faces or new, it's always a unique adventure wherever we go.  Hope everyone has a safe & fun Halloween, and may this week's games be the BEST of the season!

Tempe is a really great game-day atmosphere and I had more than my fair share of fun, thanks to DevilFroggy and his crew that welcomed us in! It was a pleasure meeting OrangeAfroMan as well, hopefully we can continue to organize some fun meetups next year and keep it going!

hahha, no only my face is in the pics posted above, I was going to protect some privacy unless the others who came want me to post our little group shot.  However most of us are friends on the Facebook, so I think you know what devil frog looks like already...
@FearlessF (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=10) , the topic of your graciousness with warm jackets did get mention in our conversations, though!  Seems you are VERY eager & willing to help anyone out with a Husker jacket, and I know my husband-type took you up on that offer once!   Probably the only reason someone even picked us midnight-hitchhikers up that one time we were stranded in Lincoln...   ;)
