Title: Most Played Non-Conference Opponent
Post by: ftbobs on July 11, 2020, 12:47:42 PM
Out of curiosity, I wondered which teams played the most non-conference.  To do this count, I only counted games when the teams weren't in the same conference and I excluded a team that was independent, so some games counted for one team, but not the other.   The first on the list is not a surprise.  It's interesting that Texas and Oklahoma is still #3 on the list, despite being a conference game for 25 years.

I would have though ND had played the military academies more often that that.

Good stuff, Bobs.

Most of the time the military academies were "independent", so those times did not count to the list (because of "non-conference").

Notre Dame has played Navy 93 times, Army 51 times and Air Force 30 times.

Notre Dame's breakdown of opponents is as follows:

And while all were technically non-conference, you could also argue none were.

Oh yeah, that makes sense, I forgot they were independents for much of the time, thanks.

Who would Penn State's #1 be?

Since joining a conference, Temple would be Penn State's #1 with 15, Pitt 8, Akron 6.

Thanks Bobs!  I should have known that.

Surprised pitt is #2, I figured somebody would sneak in there.

How can OU and Texas have different games-played numbers for their OOC series against each other?  Could the fact that they were conference mates in the SWC a hundred years ago have been missed on the count for Texas?

In the early 1900s, Texas was a member of the SIAA, when Oklahoma was an independent.

That does not explain why or how OU has played 70 OOC games with Texas, but Texas has played 78 OOC games with OU.

Or maybe it does, partially.  OU and Texas played 17 times before 1915.  Six of those games came while Texas was a member of the SIAA, and two of them came while it was a member of the TIAA.  OU was an independent the whole time.

I guess those are the eight games.  Odd that games played by a team that is independent don't count as OOC games in the database.

You probably know, but for the benefit of others, I'll point out that OU and Texas were founding members of the SWC in 1915.  OU's last year was 1919; Texas' was 1995.

OU's most-played OOC series against opponents not currently in the Big 12:
Missouri, with 96 meetings.  But most of the games--all from 1928 onward--were conference games.
Nebraska, with 86 meetings, 7 as OOC opponents, 1 as bowl-game opponents although both were in the Big 8.
59 games with Colorado, 55 as conference-mates.
28 games with Tulsa.
15 games with Arkansas, but only 3 since 1926.
11 games with Notre Dame.

Maybe I'm missing some with more than 11 games played.

This all makes me feel like certain programs have scheduled a lot of automatic wins over the years.

This was a custom query I wrote.  "Non-conference" is a tricky thing.  If I counted independents, than the top of the list is dominated by Notre Dame, Navy, Army, Penn State, and the other long time Independents.  By excluding independents, I knew that you'd get unequal counts for teams, but felt that information was more what I was looking for.

Yeah.  It's interesting how the stats end up seeming a bit quirky, but it is what it is.
