Title: Oh yes we are going to have a season. One for the ages.
Post by: Drew4UTk on July 10, 2020, 02:18:34 AM
gotta lay some peer pressure on afro... he needs to be the ref- or provision others to take that duty... i mean, what are mods for, right?

By my reckoning we WILL have a season.  Right here.  All you posters certain your team is better, go ahead and select the best one from your teams past... become the coach.

If we can leverage @OrangeAfroMan (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=58) to play along, he can move the pieces and roll the dice, and pull double duty as the announcer...

I'll set up a board to support this, or, we can invade his board (whoanellie) and do it there... podcast it too? Why not?

Set up the schedules.... assume or nominate coaches for each team... i imagine we could generate a lot of interest of we were to pull this off...

Thoughts?

I've been pondering a way to create 2020 teams.....it would be a big endeavor.  Or we could just do a tournament with historical teams.

I love the passion!

I'm fully planning on running one too, where I sim/watch the biggest games on NCAA, and then simulate the rest using a weighted number generator, using ESPN's FPI, and run the game one time only.

But I like having one with more participation as well, actually I love it

I think it would be cool, although that's a LOT of work on OAM...

For example, I'd probably either pick 2003 or 2004 Purdue. I'm quite sure he hasn't made sets for those teams yet, and probably will have little to no interest in that set in the future.

But if he's up for it, I'd be good.

OAM--I do have a question. 2004 Purdue, for example, was a strange year. Kyle Orton started the season absolutely on FIRE. But in the Wisconsin game he got a hip pointer, and then while recovering [and playing through] that hip pointer he got one on the other hip, so by the time of the Michigan game that year he was playing through double hip pointers... His play suffered until he got healthy later in the year.

I assume you base stats on full year play, so perhaps it'd be a better choice to use 2003 when the team was mostly healthy?

he probably has any team I might pick

Instead of the obvious picks of 1971 or 1994, 1995 or 1997, I'd maybe go with 1982 or 1993

The 04 passing game was better than 03.  Neither had much of a run threat, but 03's defense was better stopping the run.  Special teams is better than 04's as well, but I think 03 would be the better/more fun team in Whoa Nellie, despite having a worse record in reality.

I've created over 550 teams since opening.  including 15 different Nebraska teams from '71 to '19.

Maybe it's just revisionist history, but I think 04 was much more of a run-based team--largely due to having the better defense.

04 had a surprisingly good defense, but it was only surprising because of how many defenders Purdue put into the NFL with their 2003 graduating class.

They averaged 7 more carries per game in 03 than in 04 and both years, the top RB averaged around 4.0 ypc and the team overall averaged 3.5 ypc both seasons.

I'd never have guessed the obscurity of the teams requested, but it keeps me busy.  Including FCS, the Ivy League, and tons of G5.

OAM -- can you make "all star" teams?

I.e. let's say I pick:

1 QB from whatever year I want
2 RB from whatever year
2 WR from whatever year
1 TE from whatever year
OL from whatever year I want (based on run stats and sack stats)
Playbook from whatever year I want

I don't know how you do defense, so maybe defense will be individual or maybe it will be just picking by year.

Is that something that can be done? I'll bet if you had us here as a group nominating the "all star" team for our various schools, you might even be able to make those decks available to your normal game buyers...

I could.
But instead of having a starting RB get a bulk of the carries, you'd have 4 RBs all sharing time.  Same with the WRs/TEs.
Defense is just pass-rushers (sacks) and interceptions.

Plays are all relatively generic for each specific team's type of offense - the same 6-8 pass routes, the same 4-5 run plays, but with option thrown in when applicable.

Here's some all-decade QB cards I was fiddling around with:

And a partial example of some inside run plays, from '45 Army.  The defense influences the yardage gained, so while each running outcome is fixed on the card, it may then be altered by the defensive call, from 0-4 yards, depending on the team).
