Almost the same group of teams that were in contention for having the best QB.

Are a similar group of teams vying for the worst starting RB as were vying for worst starting QB? (Rutgers, Maryland, etc.)

IMO, there's a clear top two.  Trey Sermon and Journey Brown.

Last season Trey Sermon ran the ball 54 times for 385 yards (7.1 avg), and caught 8 passes for 71 yards.  Part of that was due to injury, and part of it was due to the emergence of two other backs.  In addition, Jalen Hurts ran the ball 233 times for almost 1,300 yards.

Diving deeper into Sermon's stats:

Of the 385 rushing yards Sermon had, 91 came against the #85th ranked rushing defense (Houston), 76 came against the #80 ranked rushing defense (Texas Tech), 71 came against the #124th ranked rushing defense (Kansas), 56 came against an FCS opponent (South Dakota), and 51 came against the #52 ranked rushing defense (UCLA).

The combination of these factors leads to a very unimpressive year for Sermon, and probably contribute heavily to him leaving OU.

Let's look at his 2018 numbers, because I believe these to be more reflective of how Sermon will perform at OSU.

He rushed 155 times for 928 yards (6.0 avg), and caught 12 passes for 181 yards.

206 of those yards came against Texas Tech, the 65th rushing ranked defense.
124 came against Oklahoma State, the 85th ranked rushing defense
119 came against Army, the 4th ranked defense.
and 110 came against TCU, the #38 ranked defense.

Sermon had a much better year in 2018.

IMO, even if Sermon returns to his 2018 form, he isn't as good as Journey Brown.  However, he will be running behind a very good offensive line, and I really can't argue too much if people rank him #1.

Should have been a choice like this:

Thanx BBTS didn't know that with everything going on I'm not on it like a real season is approaching

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't understand why the Minnesota guy is getting 3 votes.

Could ya fill me in?

He's really good. 114 carries for 604 yards and 7 TD's as Smith's backup last year.

Zach Charbonnet
He's probably the third best back on his own team.

I voted for him, mostly because I'm the most confident that he will get lots of carries. Sermon may not even start.

True enough.

I can't remember a year in the B1G so weak on RBs.  I'm sure someone is going to step up and get big numbers.  Probably from Wisconsin.

not to mention the year before when he didnt see action in the first two games and still gain over 1000 yards

He will surprise a bunch of people as a featured back this year.  it wont hurt to be running behind a much improved line than he did two years ago

I'd say so weak on obvious top end RBs.  Depth is pretty solid, particularly considering two of the schools with question marks, Wisconsin and Maryland, seem to always figure that spot out.

He's probably the third best back on his own team.
Disagree.

Haskins is pretty good but doesn’t have any speed.

Chris Evans is a great change of pace back and a great pass catcher, he’s a great compliment piece. Especially in an offense that throws the ball to the backs.

Charbonnet is easily the best back on the team with the highest NFL potential imo.

I think Charbonnet should be on the list, but I also agree with ELA. He will be part of a three headed monster and his stats will likely suffer.

He does a good job of carrying the ball a bunch of times inefficiently, without getting hurt.  So there's that.

Lol. He was hurt all year and played through it. His YPC was down a little bit because he scored so many short yardage td’s. Charbonnet is money in the goal-line/short yardage situations.

He scored 11 TDs on only 148 carries. The most in a single season by anyone is Chris Perry I believe at 18, but that was on like 350 carries.

He already broke Ty Wheatley and Mike Hart’s freshman rushing TD record by 2 TDs. And he was splitting carries and wasn’t healthy at all the entire season.

The only reason Haskins even got any carries is because Charbonnet was struggling with injuries all year.

Haskins to me honestly just isn’t that good. He has zero burst and no speed. Charbonnet has noticeably more burst and speed and that was while playing hurt.

I think with Charbonnet being healthy and  Chris Evans coming back, Haskins carries should fall off. He’s like a bigger, stronger De’Veon Smith. But then again Jim’s autistic ass likes these kind of backs- so watch Haskins have more carries than anyone this year.

Mo's stats
freshman year behind a less talented OL
sophomore year split carries between 1-4 backs still kept his average close
will be the featured back this season behind a much improved OL

I think he was quite good, but clearly will be even better/ bigger with a year under his belt

He went nowhere on some runs bc of poor vision or hesitation- but I think that’s to be expected with a true frosh, no?

He looked real good against Alabama and Penn State, but in both those games he got only 15 carries or less.

Against Wisconsin he only got 2 carries and was banged up. Against Ohio State he only got 4 carries- but that’s mostly because they had to abandon the run bc they were getting blown off the field.

Charbonnet is a north/south straight ahead runner. He’s not a Barry Sanders or a scat back. He needs carries. He’s a workhorse prototypical throwback RB. He plays a volume game. He needs a lot of carries. And he just wasn’t getting them last year.

He basically evenly split carries with Haskins. Which, I’m not a fan of and think it’s a mistake. Haskins is a severely less talented version of Charbonnet. When you’re splitting carries you should have two completely different type backs that each bring something different.

Like Charbonnet and Evans splitting carries- that makes sense. Evans is a slasher and is an excellent route runner and pass catcher. That’s the type of combo you want if you’re going to split carries.

Ok, I have to dive into the MN guy's numbers.  On its face the 2019 numbers are not impressive.  114 carries, 604 yards (5.3 Avg).  He also caught 3 passes for 13 yards.

In 2019 his best game was the bowl game.  Against Auburn he had 20 carries and 140 yards.  Auburn was the 25th ranked rushing defense in football.  His next best games were:

Fresno State (#71 ranked rush defense): 88 yards
Nebraska (#94): 84 yards
Northwestern (#36): 76 yards
Rutgers (#107): 62 yards

With the exception of Auburn, all of this looks...OK.  Not great.  In the remaining games he failed to reach 40 yards.  In those 5 games, he rushed 34 times for 154 yards (4.5 Avg).  36 of those yards came on a single carry against Wisconsin.  Without that run, he would have averaged less than 3.5 yards per carry.

Outside of the bowl game, nothing really jumps off the page.  Maybe he was playing with an injury.

Much like Trey Sermon, Ibrahim's 2018 season was much better.  He rushed 171 times for 936 yards (5.5 Avg), and his best game was a 157 yard performance against Ohio State.  He also rushed for 121 yards on 26 carries against Wisconsin (4.7 Avg.), and 98 yards on 20 carries against Northwestern.  All three of these teams had rush defenses ranked in the top 10.

So, which version will we see?  2018 or 2019?  Why did Ibrahim take such a step back last year?

he was running bhind a 10th year senior who was pretty good 1(163 yards) and another RB that was promised some carries if he came back from numerous injuries in Brooks, (he also was injured during the year and still got 408 yards)

on the surface Mo's 2019 numbers look down because 228 carries were given to Smith who is 2nd all time in Gopher history for yards(better than (maroney and both Barbers)
a better look is his 2018 numbers where Smith and Brooks were the top two backs until season ending injuries forced Mo into the starting line up in game 3.

In the Auburn game he was just too good not to keep off the field and he took advantage of it and went off for 140 yards.
Smith took most of the carries throughout the year because he earned those carries

just saying that he will be a very good back in 2020 if we get to have football

and he could very well break Smiths numbers by the time he goes Pro
