Title: #5 Wisconsin (9-0, 12-0) at Minnesota (2-7, 5-7) Post Game
Post by: 847badgerfan on November 19, 2017, 02:48:47 PM
One team is playing at an elite level and it's not Minnesota. Speaking of ELITE, it looks to me like the gopher kids have quit on their self-promoting, loudmouth coach. The rowboat is sinking and fast. This team won 9 games last year, for God's sake.

BUT

This game is for the AXE and generally the records get thrown out. This is the Superbowl for Minnesota and they would love nothing more than to spoil Wisconsin's unbeaten season, like they did in 1993, as a far inferior team. A win would also make them 6-6 and eligible for a bowl game.

I'll have to keep up on the tea leaves this week as for where their heads are at. I will also pay close attention to UW's injury list because they have played two extremely physical games in the past two weeks.

On paper, Minnesota has no chance, because they are bringing a sinking rowboat to a game with a floating machine powered by 3 Cummins turbo diesels.

But games aren't played on paper.

There is no reason to fret this Gopher team
Its too banged up and the coaches are coaching in year zero and have not shown an ambition to be creative to spoil year 4's success

If Wisconsin doesn't rack up 50+ points I would be shocked and BTW the gophers might get 1 first down but not many more.

This coaching staff doesn't know about trophy games and how to prepare.  they are more interested in rowing boats and putting uniforms (gray and white) together that should not ever be worn again

Wisconsin has played down to it's competition a couple of times this year, but for the most part have shown up and went about their business.

is it possible they let off the gas after a BIG win and a BIGGER game only a week away? maybe? but, it is a trophy game. the best trophy in my opinion.

still, we've seen it a lot this year, Miami looked sluggish after their BIG win, Ohio St got destroyed after their big win, it's human nature.

this is where a new head coach can make or break their careers, Tressel was awful his first year, but he knew he had to come up big in the rivalry.

I actually think Minny keeps this close. But in the end, Wisconsin's defense is too strong for Minnesota.

I'll take the badgers 24-13.

Jerry Reed wrote a good line in his song "Crude Oil Blues" about a gas station during the oil embargo that applies to this game from the  Gopher side:

"He who is expecting nothing ain't gonna be deceived!"

I've followed the Gophers through a lot of crap over the years. Rain, snow, hail, subzero wind chills, dumbass ADs, I-65 in Indiana, and all that. And even compared to all of that, this is the first Gopher home game in a long time that I am not at all excited to go to. Part of it is because wins against them in the sports that matter have been few and far between. Another part is that the last Gopher win in the series occurred 2 years before I was legally able to purchase alcohol, and I'm now in my 30s. Finally, I saw enough of that game at the Camp last week. I'm expecting a 56-6 trouncing with 20,000 or more falling-down-drunk weasel fans present lustly cheering them on.

I understand that college football programs don't get built overnight. However, right now, Fleck is making Tim Brewster look like the good parts of Pop Warner, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Bill Snyder, and Nick Saban all rolled into one. All hat and no cattle.

But still, I'm going. Who knows. Maybe something will be different this time.

I give you a ton of credit, Mr. Yao Ming (If you've met GR you'd get it).

You show up no matter what. Even at MH's house last year and that snow storm on Sunday.

Dood, you are the perfect example of a great fan. And a good friend too.

I imagine this will be fugly with Wisc winning by 35, trying to score committee style points.

I feel your pain man.  In one respect getting repeatedly crushed by Wisc.  this year's 17-9 loss was first by less than 3 scores since the year after I graduated from Purdue.

And the other, just the wads of awful awful football I've had to watch most of the last decade and kept going to the games.  After 5 d-1a wins in 4 years under Hazell, Brohm has had 5 this year and it's been worth the wait.  I must say from afar I've been perplexed at some of the antics and seemingly overall goal by Fleck to beat everyone's expectations into submission subtly.  Maybe he simply knew this wasn't a good squad this year.  It certainly is the opposite approach Brohm has taken but there is more than 1 way to cook the meal.  Looking back, it really seems like that late rally by Purdue vs Minn when we were outplayed for probably 58 mins of the game, was a turning point to the negative for Minn.

Regardless, being a longtime season ticket holder comes with high's and low's, nearly all lows the last decade, rewarded with lots of crazy, unexpected up's and down's this year, but ending with a Bucket game I am very excited for this weekend, where winner goes bowling and loser goes home.

“We have a very young and inexperienced football team,” Fleck said after his team’s 39-0 loss to Northwestern, which built a 25-0 halftime lead. “We’ve got to be better in the weight room. We’ve got to develop our players.

“We’ve got to be in our scheme longer. We’ve got to be able to recruit at an incredibly high level and that’s on the way.”

If I was a Kill or Claeys recruit, I'd have no interest whatsoever in playing for this asshole and would look to transfer immediately.

After turning it on over the final 20 game minutes, Wisconsin can now focus on Ohio State, a Big Ten championship, and a likely College Football Playoff bid...assuming they can handle Minnesota again, as they have 13 consecutive times.  The Gophers ruined an undefeated season for the Badgers in 1993, and would like to do so again, however it seems unlikely.  The series hasn't just been one sided, the games themselves have been lopsided, with Minnesota failing to stay within single digits since 2009.  For Minnesota to have a shot, it seems like Wisconsin would have to get caught looking ahead.  While that is always possible, Wisconsin finished against Minnesota prior to 3 of their 4 Big Ten Championship Game appearances, and won those 3 games by an average of 17 points.  Minnesota broke out two weeks ago in an offensive explosion against what has become the worst defense in the Big Ten in Nebraska, but any hopes that they had finally figured things out were put to rest last week when they were held to 182 yards, and only 7 first downs, to 5 turnovers, in a shutout loss at Northwestern.  Demry Croft can be effective when Minnesota is making things happen on the ground, but when they don't, he is a huge liability.  Absolutely nothing is working against this monster Wisconsin defense right now, leading the conference in ypp allowed both on the ground (2.5 ypc) and through the air (5.4 ypa).  For their part, only Rutgers and Nebraska are surrendering more yards per carry than Minnesota.  So you want to beat Wisconsin, but you can't stop the run?  Good luck with that.  The question here isn't whether Wisconsin will win, but by how much.  It's almost impossible to imagine an undefeated Big Ten champion being left out of the playoffs, but to strengthen the resume, they may want to avoid the type of ugly win that the committee doesn't like.  It's a rivalry game, and I think Minnesota still has enough fight left in them to prevent getting their doors blown off.  Plus, considering the already mounting injury report, with Ohio State to follow, I wouldn't be surprised if Chryst starts pulling guys in the third quarter.
WISCONSIN 35, MINNESOTA 13

“They would love to ruin our season and run across and take that ax and get into a bowl game,” Jim Leonhard said Wednesday at the conclusion of UW's practice at the McClain Center.

“The thing I don’t like talking about right now is the last time they had the ax I was on that field,” Leonhard said. “You watch them rush across the field and come take it. That’s a feeling you don’t want to have."

What a mess.

Actually, I was wrong. What an absolute train wreck/Dumpster/tire fire. This Gopher team has no OL, no QB, one WR that the quarterbacks tried to get crushed, no DL, one linebacker who was coming here if the staff showed so much as a modicum of interest (Thomas Barber, younger brother of Marion), and one DB thats worth a Big Ten scholarship.

I used to think that Fleck's best sales job was convincing Winfield to play rather than take an 8 figure defamation settlement off the University. I was wrong. The biggest sales job he's got will be to convince any players worth a tinkers damn to come into this dumpster fire and try to knock the flames down.

This is the third time in 10 years that I thought this program was at rock bottom.

At least having no expectations of this game meant that I didn't have steam coming from my ears. But which is worse: getting red hot angry over a football game, or not caring at all? I'm afraid I'm closer to the latter than the former.

Congratulations to the Badgers for a perfect regular season.   That is a helluva accomplishment.

It you are not ranked in the top 3 now, something fishy is happening.

Something fishy. Well at least by ESPN standards, they are projecting Wisconsin at 5, and 2 loss Auburn will hop over everyone.
1) Auburn
2) Clemson
3) Georgia
4) Oklahoma

Auburn/Georgia Loser is out.

5) Wisconsin - Win and In vs. OSU
6) Alabama - Rooting for OSU/TCU to win then Sit at Home and In
7) Miami - Win and In vs. #2 Clemson

I'm still trying to understand why he was given an extension already. If he did have opportunities elsewhere, it would have been a blessing for Minnesota to lose him.
