Title: #1 Guy for each program
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on May 12, 2020, 08:49:06 PM
There's a lot of the "Mt Rushmore" thought activities about who are the top people in this or that.  But what about the top guy - the #1 guy above all others?  The timeless guys, the legends,...

For the SEC, I'll start with the obvious choices:
Alabama - Bear Bryant
Arkansas - Frank Broyles
Georgia - Herschel Walker
Florida - Steve Spurrier
.
The toughest part about this is do you go with the best player ever or the legendary HC.
Auburn - Bo Jackson or Shug Jordan or maybe Pat Dye?
Ole Miss - Archie Manning?  Vaught?  Eli?
Tennessee - Neyland?  Manning?
LSU - hell, Burrow?  Billy Cannon?
.
The rest, I'm not even sure.
Kentucky...Tim Couch?  Art Still?  Babe Parilli?
Carolina...Sterling Sharpe?  George Rogers?  Clowney?.......Both of these programs lack a father figure really, as Bryant is UK's top HC and Spurrier is Carolina's.
A&M....John David Crow....Johhny Football?  Slocum?  The 12th Man?
Mizzou.....no clue
Vanderbilt...no clue
Miss State....no clue

I would argue that Paul Bryant is the most important person in Kentucky football history. Bryant led Kentucky to the SEC championship and a Sugar Bowl victory over Number 1 Oklahoma in 1950. Kentucky had only one loss a s Sagaran gave Kentucky his NC in a later day poll.

I would rate Dak Prescott who had Miss State at number 1 at one point as MSU's seminal player

The Bear and the SOS might be the guy for two programs.

The Bear and the SOS might be the guy for two programs.
they have the most 10 win seasons at their 2 respective programs.

saban has serious chance/argument to be bama's "guy". he's been more successful by most measures and most fans i know consider him the goat over even bryant. biggest thing bryant still has is his name is synonymous with bama football, where as saban's is it's own thing, currently. who know what it'll be in a decade after he's done.
