Title: OT College Admissions
Post by: Temp430 on April 23, 2020, 01:40:31 PM
My youngest got wait listed at Michigan. He wants to study engineering so that, being out of state, Y chromosome, and privileged whiteness pretty much hosed his chances.  His SAT score and grades, including numerous AP course As and college credit in Calculus 1 and 2 (both As) at an Ivy league school, made his application stronger than the average Michigan student.  He’s big on the Big Ten experience so we sent his deposit to Wisconsin.  I always thought Madison was a great college town, second only to Ann Arbor in the B1G.

Isn't Purdue considered to be a top flight engineering school?

I have a similar socioeconomic background and got into Michigan, as well as Wisconsin and Penn State. I was at Michigan from 2006 to 2010, but selectivity has definitely continued to rise, and the Engineering school was already difficult to get into (I was in LS&A), even though my understanding is that enrollment has actually grown somewhat over the past decade while the population of college-aged students has fallen.

That said, Michigan actually seems to favor out-of-state students somewhat because they have to pay full tuition and aren't eligible for the need-based aid program that allows instate students to get free tuition from families making <$60K with some discount up to ~$150K (I forgot the exact numbers so I may be a little off on that).

Given that classes could be online this fall anyway, he could wait until Michigan makes a final decision and start college there or Wisconsin in January, instead....

Regardless, there's a lot of opportunities in electrical engineers throughout the electricity sector, especially, of course, and that's only going to increase with more renewables and energy storage systems, advanced energy management systems, along with electric vehicles. I do mostly analytical non-engineering work, though I did my graduate degree in Engineering Management and work with engineers.

Does he have any idea what he wants to do for his career? To be sure, I got into the clean energy space somewhat by accident, and didn't really know what I wanted to until I got into it.

I'd say Purdue, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin are all considered in the top of the B1G. Not necessarily in that order.

Northwestern, PSU, and Minnesota are probably very close behind those three. All quite solid schools too.

Note to Maryland and Rutgers folks--I'm not excluding you because you shouldn't be in the list; I've just never really looked at the engineering programs from either school.

IMHO electrical is one of the top options these days, because there is SO much opportunity--particularly if you take a more computer engineering emphasis. Not even related to the electricity sector, but just in general everything is becoming much more electrically complex and computerized, and I don't see that trend changing.

I fully believe this helped me into Wisconsin. Not that I wasn't going to get in, but turning around the app in 2-3 weeks was a surprise.

Anyway, Temp, if your child ends up in Madison, I'm happy he'll be able to dispel that better college town poppycock. We can always learn at any age.

There aren't many better settings, especially not at student unions.

One of my undergrad professors recommended Wisconsin to me as grad school.  At the time, I thought of Wisconsin and North Pole as being the same thing.  Nyet.

Another one suggested Cal, which to me was somewhere near Japan, or something.  I had a very parochial view of the world.  I've now been to 49 states.  The world has shrunk.

At West Point, where I did not matriculate, electrical engineering is taught in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.  Shorthand for that is D/EE&CS.  Or, orally, "EEKS!"

I was barely 30.  Of course my wife and I were in school forever and like many people these days got married a bit later than historical 20th C avg.

I dated a bunch but really never got that serious with anyone prior to my wife.

Related to the OT, I actually had a momentarily blank when trying to remember where I had applied to undergrad.  I'm not looking forward to that in 6 or 7 years with our oldest daughter.

I was pretty serious about one girl who graduated UGA the same year as me.  We held on for about a year of separation.  She was a Christian Scientist which gave me significant pause.  The one I did marry also graduated UNC the same year as me.  We held on for a few months of separation and then got married.  I think in large degree that was because it seemed like it was time and here was a person of the OS.

AS I was raising my kids as a single mom, I didn't think much at all about dating.  I put it out of my mind, one gets pretty busy with three kids.

Been remarried for 3 years. It great to have someone who accepts you for you. wish I have found her early, though that probably wouldn't have work since she was married for 32 years before her late husband died.

I was married for 25 years with 10 kids, when my ex decided she would rather sleep with other guys (well it was probably earlier when that started).

I had all the kids with me with no help from her, until I decided to move out to AZ to help with my mom. Gave the kids still at home the choice at that time whether to move with me or go to Indiana and live with their mom. Only one of the four left went with me.

Personally wasn't thinking about dating or getting remarried, but hated being in the house all the time, so I joined a meetup group that went out to listen to live music and dancing. Spent months just dancing with multiple ladies most Fridays and Saturdays not even thinking about dating. Then boom, I met my current wife. Been great ever since.

It was funny, her 2 boys were concerned that I was taking advantage of a rich recent widow and their mother didn't know what she was doing. They have since come around, they at least tolerate me now. Her only fault is she is from Boston and an extreme Patriots' fan. I do give her credit she was a long time season ticket holder before the Brady-Belichek era.

Huh. I, too, dated a Christian Scientist for several years during college. Great lady. We weren't the right match, but I've always considered her a friend, though it's been a while since we last spoke. In a cosmic mystery, she lives a few miles away and SFIrish runs in work circles that are concentric with hers as one of SFIrish's political passions is the area of engineering that the ex works in.

Got lucky with SFIrish the first time around (at least 20 years in it still feels that way).

Back to that Memorial Union: that place is special. Last time I was there was the first weekend in March--just before COVID-19 struck with a vengeance. It's hovering about freezing, lake still frozen, and we walk out onto one of the piers going into the lake. Youngish couple, maybe students, maybe just out of college, come and sit down on the pier, one holding a pitcher of beer, the other two cups. They were looking pretty darned content. I looked at that and thought, "man, this place is near heaven."

PS Hockey players wear sweaters. Period.

He called me that a few times, as I recall.

His name was Tom Kite and he had a listed phone# in Austin, so fairly regularly he would receive calls from strangers who had randomly looked up his number in the phone book, thinking they would be contacting the famous golfer.  He always got a kick out of playing along for a while, full British accent and all.

He also grew to love country music, after I'd taken him along to enough honky tonks and concerts.  He even bought a cowboy hat and boots.  Great guy.

I've got a coworker that I spent a LONG time trying to place his accent. Based on his name and the accent, I thought there was a little bit of British in there, but then it'd go off the rails into not only American, but Southern, but sometimes surfer... It was seriously all over the place, and despite being in a very international industry, it just didn't sound like anything I'd ever heard.

We ended up chatting at a customer event and he was talking about his background. Born in the UK, then spent a while in Ohio, followed by Texas, and ended up in Southern California.

Suddenly it all made sense...

It's funny you say that, after living for about ten years in Texas, my friend Tom's accent was a mangled mess as well.  His parents came over from England to visit every so often, and I'd hang out with them, and they'd make fun of him for sounding like a Texan.  To  my ear, he still mostly had his English accent, but it had certainly morphed over the years.  And his parents teased him pretty mercilessly about it.

His mom was a gifted singer, sang soprano in some important vocal group in London that I wouldn't know or understand.  But she, too, grew to love country music, after her son started sending her CDs of all of his favorite American country artists.  And then at one point, it worked out that they were in town at the same time Johnny Cash was playing a benefit for a charity that some friends and I supported, so we got his parents tickets to that event, which was a really exclusive show played in a small music venue downtown, not a large concert hall.  It was a really great night, and his mom couldn't believe how much energy and soul Johnny Cash could sing with.
