Afternoon tips

- #2 Florida State 60, #15 North Dakota State 59
- #9 INDIANA 71, #8 USC 70 (OT)
- #4 Oregon 95, #13 New Mexico State 86 (2OT)
Proof that doesn't really take an upset for there to be Madness. Only bad game was the one that was probably the best game on paper.
Florida State hit a offensive rebound putback with 19 second left to take the lead, and the Bison missed a potential game winner. From about 10 minutes on the entire game was played within a spread of NDSU +1 to FSU +3.
Hoosiers scored had a 5-0 run in the final 16 seconds to force OT, after USC missed two front ends of 1 and 1s. Then Rob Finessey hit the go ahead three with 23 seconds left in OT. USC missed a potential game winner at the buzzer.
Oregon came back from down 12 points in the second half to force overtime, but the Aggies erased a 6 point deficit in the first overtime. They were clearly spent after that, getting outscored 12-3 in the second OT, and that one three pointer didn't come until the Ducks had scored the first 10 points to go up 93-83.

Late tips
- #2 Villanova 75, #15 Northern Kentucky 56
- #5 BYU 85, #12 Stephen F. Austin 62
- #2 Creighton 59, #15 UC Irvine 50
- #1 Gonzaga 80, #16 Prairie View A&M 40
Boring set to finish the night. Even UC Irvine never REALLY threatened Creighton. All chalk on Day 1, save for a 9 over 8 and two 10 over 7s.
-
Noon tips
- #3 Kentucky 77, #14 Bradley 64
- #3 MICHIGAN STATE 83, #14 Little Rock 50
- #12 Liberty 69, #5 Butler 64
Finally, a little Madness. Your annual 12 over 5 upset!

Afternoon tips
- #11 Texas 77, #6 IOWA 73
- #11 East Tennessee State 78, #6 Virginia 44
- #4 MARYLAND 70, #13 Yale 60
- #5 Auburn 73, #12 Cincinnati 50
Iowa stormed out to a 24-6 lead, then went ice cold, and Texas actually led at the half 34-32. Texas then pushed the lead out to 12, before Iowa came back. A potential game tying shot missed with 7 seconds left, and Texas made both FTs.
ETSU just dominated Virginia from start to finish. I went from being happy MSU did't have to play the Hoos, to terrified they have to face this Bucs team that was #26 in the final AP poll, and was sure to be a Cinderella pick if their had been a tourney.
Sort of like the Texas-Iowa game, except once Maryland went from down in a hurry to up, Yale never threatened. Terps fell behind by 12 by the under 12. But like Texas took the lead before halftime, and at no point in the final 10 minutes was the game closer than 8.
-
West coast gap game
- #4 WISCONSIN 73, #13 North Texas 72
No clue how Wisconsin pulled this out. They were dead and buried. Was down 71-64 with 23 seconds left. Three made threes in the final 23 seconds while NTU went 1-4 from the line. The winning basket was the Badgers' first lead of the game

I'm wearing my conference shirt to root for our teams in this imaginary tournament.
Note to @mcwterps1 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1590) , I am rooting for Maryland and Rutgers too, I just need an updated shirt.

Late night tips

- #1 Dayton 75, #16 Winthrop 55
- #9 Houston 73, #8 Saint Mary's 64
- #7 Arizona 81, #10 Marquette 63
I was putting the kids to bed, so I can't even tell you how Duke went down.
Winthrop jumped on Dayton 12-2, and it was still 33-33 at the half, but Dayton ran away in the second half, outscoring them 42-22.

Noon tip
- #3 Seton Hall 70, #6 PENN STATE 52
Game was at no point close. Seton Hall was up 15 at the half, Penn State scored the first 4 points of the second half, and that was as close as it ever got. Pirates were up 63-35 before emptying their bench.
-
Afternoon tips
- #10 Florida 58, #2 Villanova 51
I double checked the ratings, and he's decent, but holy shit, Andrew Nembhard is easily the best defender I've seen. He's getting steals, diving all over the place. It was 11-0 Villanova at the under 12. Gators had closed it to 11-10 at the under 8. Stayed within 4 either way for the rest of the game until Wildcats had to start fouling late
-
Evening tips
- #5 BYU 84, #4 Louisville 75
- #9 INDIANA 74, #1 Baylor 67
- #5 OHIO STATE 66, #4 Oregon 61
Indiana pushed out to a double digit first half lead. Baylor got it tied at 60-60, but the Hoosiers closed on a 14-7 run.
Oregon took a 17-9 lead, but OSU came back and the game was played within a range of Oregon +1 to OSU +3 from midway through the first half into the final minute.

-
Evening tips
- #11 East Tennessee State 84, #3 MICHIGAN STATE 73
- #12 Liberty 83, #4 MARYLAND 73
- #4 WISCONSIN 81, #5 Auburn 62
MSU was in foul trouble all game long, blew an 11 point lead and totally collapsed when Izzo took both Winston and Tillman out with 4 fouls with about 7 minutes left and the game, down 2. ETSU went on a 12-2 run in less than 3 minutes with both guys on the bench. East Tennessee State shot 46 free throws.
Maryland was absolute crap defensively early, Liberty was blowing them out 41-19, but Maryland came all the way back, and finally tied it at 68 on a Cowan three. They never got the lead, and the Flames went 7-8 on FTs down the stretch, as Maryland went scoreless on their final four possessions.
Brad Davison had 29 points on 9-17 3 point shooting, which was two more threes than Auburn's entire team.
Night tips
- #1 Dayton 86, #8 LSU 81
- #9 Houston 64, #1 Kansas 63
- #7 Arizona 79, #2 San Diego State 74
Houston hit the game winner with 1.3 seconds left, which was their first lead of the game, and they trailed by double digits from about 10 minutes in, until under 5 minutes to go. Kansas had a 59-48 lead, and got outscored 15-4 over the final 4+ minutes.
Arizona opened up 15-0, and the game was mostly played between a 6 and 10 point lead the rest of the way.

Badgers/Hoosiers
Big Ten screwed again
Matched up with a Big East/Big East game though. Maybe they could work out a trade, so we could get Wisconsin-Providence and Seton Hall-Indiana

so, in that case, do you take the for sure advancing one team or go for double or nothing?

ELITE EIGHT
MIDWEST
EAST
- #1 Dayton vs. #10 Florida
WEST
- #1 Gonzaga vs. #11 East Tennessee State
SOUTH
- #3 Seton Hall vs. #9 INDIANA

Looks like a weird Elite 8, mainly because of the names, next to the numbers. Could get a 1-1-2-3 Final Four that wouldn't feel that way, because it would be Gonzaga-Dayton-Creighton-Seton Hall. Could get the same Final 4, but if it had been Kansas-Baylor-Villanova-Duke, it feels a lot different.

Saturday Elite 8 games
- #5 BYU 89, #2 Creighton 77

FINAL FOUR
- #1 Dayton vs. #5 BYU
- #1 Gonzaga vs. #3 Seton Hall
Lowest ratings ever.
-
this is why it would never happen, the zebras would intervene
-
IIRC, the 2018 Final Four (Villanova, Michigan, Kansas, Loyola) was the lowest rated three game weekend in the past 50 years, with the Nova-UM title game being the lowest rated title game ever., but Villanova-Oklahoma, a couple years earlier, in the Final Four is the single lowest Final 4 game.
I think maybe the powers that be at CBS are happy whenever Villanova isn't involved.

Final Four scores

Championship Game
- #3 Seton Hall 79, #1 Dayton 76
Pirates hit a 3 to break a 68-68 tie with just over 3 minutes left for their first lead since it was 9-8. Dayton couldn't hit threes down the stretch, save for one meaningless one at the buzzer, once they were down 6.
Myles Powell scored 41 in the game, 3 points shy of Bill Walton's record, to win tourney MOP.
