Title: Draft a team for fun - offseason tomfoolery
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on February 22, 2020, 08:15:08 PM
Would anybody want to participate in drafting an all-time team just for the heck of it?
.
We'd work out a random draft order and picks would be made on the thread.  You decide what type of offense your team would have and draft accordingly.
Draft a starting 22 plus specialists.  Explain why you're picking a guy and how he fits in with what you're trying to do.  Option or spread or pro-set, 3-4 or 4-3 or the old 5-2.
.
I think it'd be fun, if we got enough buy-in.  Any interest?

I just think it would be interesting how each of us builds a team - what positions we value, etc.  Every team would be all-star caliber, and they won't play off or anything, but it' would be fun.

I wouldn't be good at this, and I'd want to trade down in position to get more linemen.  You might need a salary cap kind of limit too.

My strategy is to avoid skill positions early on and get linemen first and pay them more modestly, and then LBs DBs, and then start on secondary level skill players.  A year later maybe you take a shot at an elite QB.

no salaries in college football

except for the coaching staff

boring, but I'd simply build a team of all-time Cornhuskers - might run the option

Might be interesting to build an all time team from each major program, perhaps allowing for the much lower weights of earlier players.  Even when I was in college, the football team players just were not that big.
Title: Re: Draft a team for fun - offseason tomfoolery
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on February 23, 2020, 09:47:46 AM
If we built our own all-time teams from each major program, we'd all have the same 90% of players.
.
Fearless, if everyone else knew you were going to just take Huskers, then it'd be extra fun when one of us took one, denying you that player.
.
Nothing would ultimately come of it, but I think you guys are underestimating how fun this would be.  It would take a long time and we would really jump on each other for taking that guy too early or this guy before that other guy was off the board, etc.

I would probably give it a try. I'd start with OL, of course, and then DL.

not many would steal my option QBs

I could always simply steal a few Sooners to make up for any Husker losses to funny guys poaching

I think if we had 10 guys, maybe 3 would go the option route.  You're all a bunch of old fogies anyway!

When anyone runs the "wild cat", the announcer will often say "one more blocker", and indeed, a QB who merely hands the ball off is out of the play.  So, what would happen at the NFL level if a  team just ran "single wing" all the time?

seems more than half of these runs are designed runs, not scrambles from the pocket

Teams would load the box and shut them down. It's true that running wildcat / single wing improves the numbers game for the offense, but the defense still has an advantage if you don't have any way to stretch the field vertically.

I'd also want 2 legit QB runners - a Jackson AND a Tebow, a Newton AND a Vick, etc.  And I'd exploit the defense by calling the occasional pass with the QB who's perceived as the lesser passing threat of the pair.

Some of us would draft a traditional QB-RB-FB-WR-WR-TE, others would do a wishbone thing QB-RB-RB-FB-WR-TE, and others would do a spread idea QB-RB-WR-WR-WR-TE.
.
The variety would be fun.  Just a starting 22+specialists.
.
The 3-4 defense guys would draft 280 lb DEs, while the 4-3 teams would draft 240 lb DEs flying around the end.  Traditional, 250 lb MLB or some 210 lb LBs running around like raptors?  Do I take the big-INT CB (Dre Bly) or the shudown CB that didn't get many INT chances (Shawn Springs)?
.
A kicker who had a high % or could boot it from his side of the field?  A punter named Reggie Roby or a punter not named Reggie Roby?  The possiblities are endless.

That is the general thought out there, and granted, NFL defenses are "elite" by definition.  But, imagine you ran this using four wide receivers split very wide.  The defense does have to cover them 1-v-1, reducing the middle of the field to 7 on 7.  Those DBs are out of any play not run wide.  And of course if you have an RB who can throw the ball just a little bit .... or maybe you get a Tebow at QB.

I think we should get at least 8 to do it.  It's super simple, check the thread every so often, and when it's your pick, you pick a player.  Just quote your previous list of picks and add to it until you have a starting 22 + specialists.
Title: Re: Draft a team for fun - offseason tomfoolery

Say, here's the draft order:
1. Fearless
2. OAM
3. Cincy
4. 847...and so on.
.
So Fearless picks Dave Rimington, because he values the OL most and envisions fumblerooskies and what-not.  So he posts his pick, then I know it's my turn.  I post my pick of whoever (say, Charles Woodson).  Then Cincy is 'on the clock' - but there's no clock, it's just his turn.
.
After the first round, when it's back to my pick, I'd post my 2nd round choice and who I took in the 1st.  And so on.
Over time, your roster starts to build and fill out and say around Round 10, I notice I need another CB, because I still only have Woodson.
Or I picked an option QB early, so I'm needing a good FB, I'd go that route.  Or I want a 4th WR because I'm running a spread.  Your team may morph into something you didn't intend, depending on other people's picks.

If I picked say Charlie Trippi, am I picking him playing against modern players or his contemporaries?

If the latter, I would probably choose him.
Title: Re: Draft a team for fun - offseason tomfoolery

You're picking players based on how they played, and it's not even a stats thing, because it's just for fun.
.
You can draft Trippi and Sinkwich and run some sort of veer - you'd only need like 1 WR.
Title: Re: Draft a team for fun - offseason tomfoolery

Here's the thing - IT'S NOT ABOUT A 220 LB OFFENSIVE LINEMAN FROM THE 60s TRYING TO BLOCK NDOMUKONG SUH....it's all guys who were great, so just assume they're all ranked at a 99, so to speak.
.
I'm just interested to see what kind of teams form....who's going to get the height/weight/40 time guys to have the measurables advantage.  Who is going for the big-stat players?  Is someone going to get wacky and run the option with Elway or have a Mike Leach-type offense with Tommie Frazier.  Just for fun.

Trippi was a good passer and punter.  He started at QB in 1942.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/charley-trippi-2.html (https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/charley-trippi-2.html)

Nobody had that much offense back then of course.  He only had 800 yards rushing his senior year.  He finished #2 in the Heisman and won the Maxwell.  But he weighed 160 pounds out of HS.  This is my favorite stat of course.

Trippi and Sinkwich led Georgia to a 75–0 win over rival Florida (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Gators_football), a game in which Trippi threw a touchdown pass to end George Poschner (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Poschner), scored two rushing touchdowns, and on defense returned an interception for a touchdown.[ (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charley_Trippi#cite_note-5)

They played fewer games, too.  6 yards per carry is great in any era.  That's what Trippi averaged for his career.
.
Sinkwich's Heisman season rushing:
186 car
828 yds
4.5 ypc
17 TDs
.
Tebow's Heisman season rushing:
210 car
895 yds
4.3 ypc
23 TDs

If people don't want to do this whole thing, it'd be an interestingly-enough question to ask:  you have one player from college football history to start a team...who do you take?
The stud RB?  Dominant offensive lineman?  Shut-down CB?

I'd take Trippi, obviously, a multittalented player who can legit fill several roles.

But that means he would be playing against players of his era, today he would be pretty lame.  And he's over 90 to boot.

I didn't get into CFB until my sophomore year of college (1997), and since then although I had a couple years I could follow the national scene, generally barely get a chance to pay attention to anything even in the B1G outside of Purdue as of late.

So I don't think I have the historical perspective to participate.

ok.
It'd just be famous guys.  If we really wanted to get crazy, we could draft player's specific seasons.  It'd be squirrelly because 96 Dayne could be on one team and 99 Dayne on another, something like that.
.
That would require some deep-diving.

Title: Re: Draft a team for fun - offseason tomfoolery
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on February 26, 2020, 08:39:46 PM
Well if you've ever drafted a fantasy team before, you know how it goes.   You have some kind of plan, you have some players in mind.  But both the guy you want your next pick gets taken by someone else and then the backup guy you planned to pick if that happened gets picked the choice before its your turn, and you're like UHHH, UMMM and trying not to panic.
It's hard not to fall in love with a player you want, especially when a lot of your team is set and he fits what you need.
.
So here's an example:

CFB51 ALL-TIME COLLEGE FOOTBALL FANTASY DRAFT
Round 1:
1. rolltidefan - LB Derrick Thomas, Alabama
2. cincydawg - RB Herschel Walker, Georgia
3. ELA - DE Bubba Smith, MSU
4. Fearless - DT Ndomukong Suh, Nebraska
5. OAM - CB Deion Sanders, FSU
6. 847Badge - OT Joe Thomas, Wisconsin
7. bwarb - QB Vince Young, Texas
8. Marq - QB Tommie Frazier, Nebraska
9. utee - LB Tommy Nobis, Texas
10. drew4UTk - QB Peyton Manning, Tennessee
Round 2:
11. drew4UTk - DE Reggie White, Tennessee
12. utee - RB Tony Dorsett, Pitt
13. Marq - CB Charles Woodson, Michigan
14. bwarb - OT Orlando Pace, Ohio St
15. 847Badge - DT Lee Roy Selmon, Oklahoma
16. OAM - QB Tim Teobw, Florida
17. Fearless - RB Mike Rozier, Nebraska
18. ELA - WR Randy Moss, Marshall
19. cincydawg - S Ed Reed, Miami
20. rolltidefan - G John Hannah, Alabama
Round 3:
21. rolltidefan - RB Bo Jackson, Auburn
22. cincydawg - TE Keith Jackson, Oklahoma
23. ELA - RB Barry Sanders, Oklahoma St
24. Fearless - C Dave Rimington, Nebraska
25. OAM - DE Hugh Green, Pitt
26. 847Badge - RB Archie Griffin, Ohio St
27. bwarb - CB Rod Woodson, Purdue
28. Marq - G Will Shields, Nebraska
29. utee - DE Terrell Suggs, Arizona St
30. drew4UTk - T Johnathan Ogden, UCLA
......and so on.

So for me, I've got a CB, QB, and DE.  So I'd be looking O-line for my next pick or a RB if one seems like a good get.  Fearless is going the homer route, but it's okay, because it's Nebraska.  But it will be interesting if/when he strays from the Huskers.
bwarb knows he can't do the homer thing much, but he can occasionally grab a Boilermaker here and there (Woodson, Brees eventually, etc).
I assume cincy would pick a lot more pre-WWII guys than I've given him here, which would be fun to see.
.
Since we're so familiar with each other, it would be fun.
Title: Re: Draft a team for fun - offseason tomfoolery
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on February 26, 2020, 08:41:16 PM
We could even give special conditions to each other.  Fearless can only draft Huskers, I can only draft state-of-FL guys, cincy has to take pre-WWII guys exclusively, etc.  That would be fun, too.
Title: Re: Draft a team for fun - offseason tomfoolery
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on February 26, 2020, 08:44:01 PM
Every 5 rounds or so, I'd post a team-by-team update like this:
ELA
DE - Bubba Smith, Michigan St
WR - Randy Moss, Marshall
RB - Barry Sanders, Oklahoma St
T - Tony Mandarich, Michigan St
S - Eric Berry, Tennessee
.
ELA himself would keep track that he needs another WR, wants to take a LB soon, etc.
.
It would also be interesting when someone took the first kicker or punter, who takes a returner first, who fills out their entire OL, etc.  All kinds of side stories.

Required positions:
QB, RB, WR, TE, T, T, G, G, C
DE, DE, DT, LB, LB, CB, CB, S
K, P, KR, PR
.
That leaves 2 skill positions on offense for whatever type of offense you want - FB and/or RB and/or WRs.
.
It also leaves 3 positions on defense for your base D to include NT and/or DT and/or LB and/or S.
