Title: OT: States [Not?] Visited, Countries Visited?
Post by: betarhoalphadelta on February 19, 2020, 01:13:38 PM
Thought this might be an interesting one in the vein of the memorable drives thread...

States you've visited, or if the list is shorter, states not visited.

Then, countries visited...

For me, states NOT visited:

I really want to see the big sky country states (Montana/Idaho), and Alaska is on my bucket list. Some of the others I probably won't mind if I never get there lol.

Countries visited (in order):

I can almost count England (had to Uber from Heathrow to Gatwick) and Hong Kong (landed at airport, took car service over the border to Shenzhen), but I don't *really* count those even though I exited the airport... I didn't actually do anything to visit.

I really want to check out Japan. But I think the next vacation destination (pushed to next year due to the puppy) will be England/Ireland, and then Japan will be the following international trip.

Been to, or visited?

North Dakota is the only state I haven't been to, but I haven't really visited Michigan--I've been to the Detroit Airport, and I've driven on a highway near South Bend. Kind of an odd omission.

Countries I've been to:
Canada
Mexico
South Korea (and North Korea, counting a walk in the DMZ)
China (only Hong Kong)
Malaysia
Thailand
Peru
England
France
Germany
Austria
Spain
Italy
Greece
(I've been in the airports in Portugal and Switzerland, but I don't think that counts)

Define it the way you want... I left Vermont off the list because I can't recall if I've been there, but if I was there it was basically just driving through. Arkansas/Oklahoma I might have driven through somewhere, but didn't count it. And as mentioned I left England and Hong Kong off the list because although I've technically left the airports in both places and stepped on terra firma, I really don't consider them as places I've "been".

States not visited:

Arizona - been to Sky Harbor many times though
Connecticut
Delaware
Hawaii
Idaho (I may have technically been in the Idaho portion of Yellowstone way back when, but I don't really count it)
Maine
Maryland
Massachusetts
New Hampshire
New Jersey
New York
Ohio
Pennsylvania
Rhode Island
South Carolina
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
Washington
West Virginia

I've been to Canada and New Zealand.  So not particularly well-traveled, but not awful either I guess.

I didn't count airport stops as a visit.

I figured if I spent more than 8 hours (other than driving), dined (and spent money), it's a visit.

Most of the Caribbean ones for me are cruise ship stops. The cruise line we use spends a lot of time in port - and many overnight. So, it's a visit. Most.. no need to revisit.

I don't count airports.   I must conduct an act of commerce in order to count it.  North Dakota is my weakest visit, four hours and a dinner in Fargo.  Was fishing in Detroit lakes nearby.

Wow!  All of you are very well traveled.

States visited / lived in:
Born in Nebraska
Raised in South Dakota
Lived in Las Vegas, NV for four months
Wyoming
Colorado
Drove through Utah
Went to brother's wedding in New Jersey
North Carolina
North Dakota
Kansas
Missouri
Minnesota
Iowa

Country visited
Canada

Guess I'm pretty much a home body.  All family vacations were in the state I was living in.  Went to Canada once for a band camp at the International Peace Gardens and once on a vacation the summer before my senior year.  First time I ever flew on a plane was for my brother's wedding in New Jersey in 2002.  Flew to NC for a work conference and those were my only two times on a plane, lol.

Someday (when I win the lottery, lol) I want to go Germany to look up family (we came to the US in 1630 or so) so I could spend a long time just doing that, ha ha.  Luckily both sides come from Germany with only one branch from Scotland way back when.  Wouldn't have to go to a lot of countries.

Missed part two of the two part question. My list of countries is rather exotic. You are going to want to sit down for this. Consider yourself warned.

1 Canada
2 Mexico

That is all.

Yeah, I may crush all the states but I'm just a

Canada  (12+)
Mexico
Turks
St. Martin/Maarten.

Some consider LGA and JFK third world countries.  Btw, the new Delta terminal at LGA is pleasant.  Walked through it this morning.   Back to 1st world

States NOT visited:

I'll eventually pick up ME and CT on AT hiking trips.  I don't know if I'll ever visit Rhode Island, it isn't really on the way to anything.

Someday I'll do a trip to the Pacific Northwest and visit Oregon and Washington.

Alaska will probably be a cruise someday.

I would love to see Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

Countries I HAVE visited:

I've also been close enough to see part of what is now Slovenia but at the time it was part of Yugoslavia.

My biggest regret in International travel is not going to see the Berlin Wall when it was still real and they were still really shooting people who tried to escape East Berlin.  I went to Germany, Austria, and Italy in the summer of 1989 and we had an option to go to Berlin and see the City and the Wall.  At the time I truly believed that I could go back and see the Berlin Wall decades later so I opted for Venice, Italy instead.  Venice is nothing but a tourist trap and I missed my chance to see the Berlin Wall.  A few months after I got home I watched on TV as the Wall was opened.

Some of the Caribbean islands are right up there with Venice, as far as disappointments go.

Sounds like most of us have been to Canada. What Provinces?

Me? Ontario and Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, BC and the Yukon.

So far Ontario (Windsor, Toronto, and Ottawa), Alberta (Calgary and Edmonton), and BC (Vancouver).

Every one of those trips was for work, except for Windsor. I used to go there when I was 19-20 years old since the drinking age is 19 there lol...

It's somewhat nice all the places I've been able to see in my life so far, but somewhat depressing how many of them were business trips. Outside of Windsor and one day in Ensenada, every single one of my international trips was business-related except my Italy/Paris trip when I got married in 2018.

Although I think California should count double because I lived in both NorCal and SoCal, which often seem like different states...

Provinces are huge.  Ontario from E to W has elements of urban jungle and total remote BFE and that's the most populous .  I look forward to returning to Quebec,  particularly Quebec City and the eastern provinces.

Yeah, Ontario spans the entire Great Lakes region.

I ventured into the Yukon when I was in Alaska. Got to see the Carcross desert which is the world's smallest; literally just a couple of acres on the side of the road. Not sure why that spot doesn't get any water.

One piece of advice my late grandmother gave me (when I was a young teen) was to travel the world first, before traveling the US, because you can always see the home country later in age (if I'm afforded a long life, that is), but going international gets exponentially harder as you age & run out of energy, time, & physical capabilities.  So I have not made it a priority to see all 50 states at this time and there are probably more states I haven't been to than those I have seen.  However I have almost as many countries under my belt as states, so I feel pretty good about my travels so far.

States I have been to:   Texas (obvi), Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wisconsin, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida & Ohio.     (5 of these are thanks to our CFN Board Meetings!!)

Countries I have been to:   Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras (the islands only), Bahamas, Jamaica, Spain, France, Italy, England, Holland, Denmark, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany

I would much rather touch foot on all 7 continents than see all 50 states, personally, because its much more fulfilling & exciting being in crazy cool places so far from what I'm used to.  I just love that part of traveling the most - seeing the unfamiliar rather than the familiar.

That's great advice. It's easy to think you'll be flitting around Europe after retirement, but that's when overseas travel gets hard.

States I've not made it to:
Alaska
Montana
Idaho
Wyoming

In the 80ies my father took me on Baseball Tours. We would visit 4 to 7 pro baseball parks per trip, and made it to all of them. That is how visited most states.

Countries I've been:
Canada
Germany (young kid don't remember)
Mission Trips -
Mexico
Honduras
Costa Rica
Panama
Cruise -
Venezuela
Aruba
Antilles
Grenada
Trinidad & Tobago
I feel like there was one more stop, and looking at a map it would make sense to say Netherlands Antilles, but that doesn't sound right.

Yes, it doesn't get easier. Europe has no idea what ADA means. Cobblestone streets don't care about bum feet or legs. Steep steps with no railings don't care about balance issues. The buildings don't care that they don't have elevators.

Just endured a 10.5 hour flight back from France.  Those headwinds.

Have never been to North Dakota.  I think we were in Andorra once, the border was not clearly marked and I was a bit lost.  OK, I was very lost, but I figured it out.  We found a place with no cell reception and thus no nav.

Will knock off some Baltic countries this fall and Turkey in April.  I think I have been to France 15 times now.  The hotel had a gift for us for staying ten times (we stay at the CDG airport if flying out the next day).  I've been up since 3 AM their time, which would be 9 PM EST.

States I've purposely visited/been:  FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, DC, TN, LA, MS, AL, OH, IN, AZ, CA, NV, NM, CO, UT, WY.
Other sates I've been through:  AR, OK IL, MI
.
I'd like to visit Cooperstown before I die.  NYC.  Maybe Fenway.  I have no desire to visit northern New England or the upper midwest or the pacific northwest at all.  If I had to pick an area in the U.S., I guess it'd be Montana.  That might be nice/unique.
.
My desired locales are more tropical.  St. Somewhere.  Bora Bora.  The Maldives (before they're gone).  Something like that.

Montana is interesting of course, but so are Oregon and Washington and Idaho, to me.

I have lived in Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Georgia, in that order.  You can see what is on my mind.

I lived in Ohio the longest though.

I've lived in Illinois my entire life, in Chicago and various suburbs, except for my one year in the State of Madison (which is surrounded entirely by Wisconsin).

Oregon and Idaho are interesting in that I think they produce some of the best available frozen potatoes: Ore-Ida.

Some countries I think I'd like to visit include:

Vietnam
Russia
Thailand
New Zealand
Sweden
Austria
Greece
Turkey
Egypt
Morocco
South Africa (if safe)
Japan
Iceland
Argentina

The list goes on.  I visited Canada for the first time last year, but not much of it.  We will visit Turkey in April, but only Istanbul, and Russia in September but only Leningrad, or wait, St. Pete.  We will be in Sweden a few days staying with a friend.

That's a long and incomplete list also.

I was trying to count up how many times I've been to France and got 15 separate trips, the last was for four weeks.

I think I'd like to play golf in Scotland and Ireland

Lived in:
California for the vast majority of my years (Bay Area, to be specific);
Wisconsin for college;
El Paso, TX (so Texas, but, like California, it's a big enough state that the location in Texas matters);
Tennessee;
South Korea (Suwon and Kunsan).
Spent several months at Fort Lewis, in Washington, but I think it falls short of living there.

What they lack in the BBQ department they make up for in very well-aged cured/smoked meats.

Best smoked salmon of my life was in Europe, as well as interesting dried cured meats like bear that I got to try in Croatia last fall.

No doubt, but for me personally, a lack in the BBQ department is unacceptable.

Of course, we're headed to Istanbul in April, and I bet they lack in the Q department seriously.

Cooperstown was a bit of a letdown for me.  I can't really say why, but it just was.  After a 3-hour drive (that felt like 4) from West Point, it just didn't live up to my expectations.  And then we had to turn around and drive back.  It was the first week in October, so it was a beautiful drive.  That was the high point.
See the Little Bighorn Battlefield if you go to Montana.  Be sure you take the depressing route through the Crow Reservation to get there.

States I've missed: New Hampshire (been 15 minutes away from it 4 or 5 times), Nebraska, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, NoDak, SoDak, Idaho.

Countries I've visited or lived in.  Mexico, Japan, S. Korea, Grenada, Barbados, (W.) Germany.
